Credits : 3 Objectives : This module provides students with a basic understanding of business-to-business marketing, a crucial element of Marketing, because majority of business transactions occurs among organizations instead of at the individual consumer level. This subject aims to facilitate students' understanding of: (i) the nature and scope of industrial marketing; (ii) the similarities and differences between consumer marketing and business-to-business

Evaluations (may be changed) :

Case study preparation/participation 12% Group mini project presentation 8% Random tests and attendance 5% In-class tests (Basic concepts/theories) 25% Final examination 50%

Note : 1. Students are required to hand-in their case preparation notes in class for all five cases (4

presentation cases and 1 discussion case.) Preparation notes have to be computer-word processed. Submission of notes is the basis for case study evaluation, 40% discount for late submissions. For the case-presenting group, only one hand-in is needed, with all members’ names, in alphabetic order, on the cover page.

2. Mini-project: The The case groups are required to do a desk search (web pages, newspaper, magazines,

etc) about any aspect of B2B marketing of a company (manufacturers, distributors, dealers, etc.). If a student’s friends, relatives, parents work in an organization involving B2B marketing, they can also serve as the information sources. The group should organize the information they acquired and make a presentation in Powerpoint format. No individual reports are required.

Evaluation Criteria :

For the purpose of evaluation for this subject, the knowledge/skills we learned can be loosely divided into two categories: a) basic understanding, b) ability to apply concepts/theories to real situations and to solve problems in business settings. Each will account for about 50% in students’ subject evaluation. Theoretically but not realistically, if a student has a perfect understanding of the basic concepts/theories but zero ability to apply them to real life and to solve problems in business setting, he (she) can get 50 marks and still pass the subject with a D grade. A typical A grade requires a student to have an excellent understanding (75% or over) of basic concepts/ theories and an excellent ability to apply them to real life and to solve problems in business setting. The grade B and C will lie between the above two extremes. For assessing students’ ability to apply concepts/theories and solve problems, a new case study will be used in the final examination.
