The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 30 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities.

The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each year, due on 31 May. Fees for the 2013/14 year were agreed at the general meeting in April 2013 and are as follows:

● Interstate: $105 (Seniors card - $100) ● Single: $115 (Seniors card - $105) ● Joint/family: $135 - (Seniors card - $120). Joining Fee $10 ($20 for Joint/Family)

(All annual fees include FWDV affiliation and trip insurance: $45) A trip fee of $15 per adult non-member applies (for insurance purposes)

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Welcome to another president's report, this time for October, coming to you from a Saturday evening flight headed to Newcastle. In my new work role I am now regularly traveling between Melbourne and Sydney but this time my job is taking me interstate to conduct some wireless survey work at a plant just outside of Newcastle. Unfortunately, facilities such as these operate five to six days a week so my work will be conducted on Sunday, when the plant is not operating. This is my second trip for the week, after spending a couple of days at my Sydney office, on a couple of thirty degree plus days. One was a total fire ban, when the outskirts of Sydney burst into flame. As I headed to the airport, the skies of Sydney reminded me of what we encountered at the farm on Black Saturday and it certainly was an eerie feeling as the sun turn bright orange through the smoke of the bushfires. As we all now know, there has been significant property loss due to these fires and it is a chilling reminder of how easily our bushfires can become quite damaging and, in some cases, deadly. As the summer season comes upon us, and we venture out into the bush, it is important that we are aware of our surroundings and take note of anything unusual. We also need to listen to radio broadcasts before heading out in case there are any weather conditions that may turn a pleasant drive in the bush into a scary experience. In the past month, apart from starting a new job, I have also been confirmed as Four Wheel Drive Victoria president, for the next twelve months. While this was quite unexpected, I am looking forward to this challenge and the opportunity to represent our club at the highest level of the association's board. When I say challenge, this cannot be underestimated as the association is not just a part time business but one that has a budget of around half a million dollars a year and with five full and part-time start in its office. I am still coming to terms with the workings of the association and the levels it operates at with the government, DEPI and Parks Victoria. Even this weekend, due to my work commitments, I have had to forego the opportunity of attending the Regional Representatives meeting being held at Bright, together with an interesting drive into the Buckland Valley. While I really should have been at the meeting, in one of my first official duties as association president, I knew that the board would be well represented, in my absence, by at least two or three other current board members.

Page: 5

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

In the past couple of weeks I have had the pleasure of attending a couple of affiliated club events, one as a guest at a normal club meeting and one as guest of honour at a 30th anniversary celebration dinner. These took me to Wonthaggi for the club meeting and to Bendigo, accompanied by Angela, for the celebration dinner. As a result of these events I have certainly been clocking up the kilometres in the Forester which is still taking pride of place in the driveway, at least until I can find time to buy a new Subaru. The new Subaru purchase has been a bit of a debacle so far, where I thought that I had settled on a new, bright orange XV. That was, until I realised that it only came with a space saver spare wheel and not the full size alloy version to match the others. While I thought that a solution would be to purchase a full size spare, the $1000 plus price of this seemed a little expensive. It also meant that the rear floor panel would not sit well on top of the full size spare. Given that the Forester has a full size tyre and wheel as standard equipment I may head back down that path so watch this space for further news. I may also have a slightly used 2007 turbo Forester if anyone is interested. On a recent Saturday the committee met at Stephen's home for our normal committee meeting, followed by a quick BBQ lunch and a long overdue planning session. It has been over two years since we last had one of these events so it was great being able to spend some extended time working out what we need to do in order to keep the club moving forward. You will see some of the initiatives over the coming months, as we put them into action. One change you will see immediately is how we welcome new members and guests to meetings. We will be encouraging current members to help make them feel welcome. We are hoping that this will be a rewarding experience for everyone. Also at our next meeting Jessica will be running a session on trip leading, for all of you budding trip leaders. More details on this can be found elsewhere in the magazine. In the next month or so we have some great events happening with the cup weekend trip up to Bright followed by the club Christmas party and the Oxfam tree delivery. Stephen has been busily organising the Bright trip and I am sure that it will be great fun. The Christmas party should also see a good turnout as it will be close to Melbourne this year. Martin has been pre-tripping this event and will be providing details elsewhere in the magazine as well. Anyway, that’s enough from me for this month. Take care of yourself out there and I will hopefully see you at the October meeting.

VENUE REPORT

SEPTEMBER GENERAL MEETING

Date: Tuesday 29 October at 8pm

Venue: South Camberwell Tennis Club

Presentation: Interested in the challenge of running a trip for our club? Being a trip leader is exciting, challenging and very rewarding! Our

presentation this month will provide you with an introduction to the role of a trip leader – learn what’s involved, the responsibilities, the benefits and

rewards – and, importantly, where you can get assistance if you wish to run a trip. Remember; a trip doesn’t have to involve 4WDing… it doesn’t even

have to involve cars! We’d love to see more trip leaders in our club – so

come along to learn more.

Door Prize: This month, our door prize for members will be a CB Radio Extension Speaker – come along to be in the draw!

Venue Coordinator

A reminder that we are no longer sending out hard copies of the magazine before the general meetings to the majority of members. The exceptions are those who have not registered an email address with the club. Everyone else will receive an electronic link to the magazine on-line and can collect their magazines at the meeting or print them using the files provided in the email.

The magazine deadline for next edition is November 14th 2013. Send all copy to [email protected]

JESSICA’S JOTTINGS

We put a lot of effort into our packing before a trip. There are checklists, food to be bought, camping gear to be inspected, and then getting it all to fit into the car. What is oft overlooked is finding out about the destination. What will be the weather be like? Is it a remote area, and so will extra fuel and water be needed? What sort of recovery gear should be carried? Most important is finding out the conditions of the tracks to be visited. I was amazed at the people on the Birdsville Inside Track who I passed recently, that did not even know whether the track was open or not. Wherever we travel, there will be a local who will know more than we will about the terrain. They are an excellent resource, be it the local National Parks office, caravan park or petrol station. It only takes a phone call to find out if the way is clear. Happy Travels Jessica Walsh

TRIP & SOCIAL REPORT

HIGH COUNTRY – AROUND BRIGHT & POREPUNKAH

Saturday 2 – Tuesday 5 November (Melbourne Cup Long Weekend)

Trip Rating: Medium – Difficult

Trip Leader: Stephen Whittaker, email: [email protected]

The Victorian High Country is a large and very special area of Victoria. This trip will explore the areas immediately north, south and east of Bright and Porepunkah. Get ready for breathtaking views and scenic hill climbs… with the occasional river crossing. Based at a standing camp (the Turner’s property) in Bright, we’ll enjoy day trips out, navigating some challenging tracks just after they’ve reopened for the summer.

The Turners have made available all their facilities for the whole weekend – showers, toilets, bbq, pizza oven, fire place, etc. Camper trailers will be welcome. This is a very generous arrangement and one of which we are very appreciative.

At this stage, the plans are:

OPTIONAL: Friday 1st November: Arrive from afternoon or late evening.

Page: 8

TRIP & SOCIAL REPORT

OPTIONAL: Saturday 2nd

November: Approx. 9am – 3pm – 4WD to Blue Rag Range via back tracks (not the black top!). Otherwise, arrivals throughout the day. If we are back early, then a visit to the Trout Farm to catch our dinner may be in order.

Sunday 3rd

November: 4WDing and touring south of Bright through the Buckland Valley.

Monday 4th November: 4WDing and touring north of Bright through

Tawonga Gap and to Mt Porepunkah. Tuesday 5

th November: Optional ‘very difficult’ drive, or/then pack up and

head home.

CHRISTMAS PARTY – WARRANDYTE STATE PARK

Sunday 1st December from 12 noon

Trip Rating: Social

Venue: Pound Bend Reserve, Pound Road (off Warrandyte Road) OR Jumping Creek Reserve, Jumping Creek Road (depending on weather conditions)

Trip leader: Martin Foot, still looking for a volunteer or three

The Warrandyte State Park is easily accessible from the Eastern Freeway via Springvale and Warrandyte Roads.

The venues are both on the Yarra River. Pound Bend has more space and car parking, and has the famous river diversion tunnel from the early gold prospecting days. However if the weather is extreme, Jumping Creek has a shelter from sun and rain and a beach for bathing (subject to river conditions). Both have toilets. Bushwalks are provided at both venues.

Catering: As in past years, members are asked to bring a plate of salad or dessert to share. The club will provide meat and soft drinks.

A message has been sent to the North Pole, asking for Santa to visit. The parents of children attending are asked to supply gifts for their children for Santa to present.

There are small wood fired BBQs at Jumping Creek, however for either venue, we really need a largish portable BBQ to cope with the expected numbers – please let Martin know if you can provide one.

For those looking for a more strenuous activity in the morning, there is a goldfields walk at Fourth Hill that starts from the Memorial location where gold was first discovered in Victoria in 1851. You will need to drive to it. Martin has details.

Further details will be advised. A trip attendance sheet will be available at the October GM.

TRIP REPORTS

MYSTERY NAVIGATIONAL RUN / TOURING ASSEMBLY

Sunday 1st September, 2013 By Stephen Whittaker (Trip Leader)

Father’s Day arrived and so did the day of our Mystery Navigational Run /

Touring Assembly. The key word for the day was ‘mystery’. All everyone

knew was that they had to meet in Sunbury and that they had to bring their brain. Well, they did… meet in Sunbury that is. Did they bring their brains?

We’ll find out later…

The first day of spring did not disappoint. The sun was shining as we gath-ered in the Community Centre car park with the forecast for the day to be

mostly sunny and 25 degrees. Arrivals were prompt with everyone beating

the 10am expected arrival time, except for Peter & Jean and Damian & An-gela – one couple dealing with a very sick animal and the other overslept.

Which was which? Well, you’ll have to ask them.

Stephen carried out his driver’s briefing while handing out the navigational

notes for the first stage of the drive. These notes only took the competitors to morning tea, so there was still no suggestion or tip as to where they

would be at the end of the day!

Each vehicle was sent off three minutes after the previous vehicle in order to avoid competitors catching up with each other. Navigators would read the

notes provided to their drivers and answer questions along the way. Those

without passengers had to direct themselves and answer the questions them-selves, so they had their work cut out for them, didn’t they Jamie and Mike?

The level of difficulty with regard to questions and notes provided increased slightly between Stage 1, 2 and 3.

Page: 11

TRIP REPORTS

Jason (Stephen’s brother, who assisted in running the day) completed the

stages first in order to be at the finish when the first vehicle arrived. Stephen acted as the ‘sweeper vehicle’ to ensure nobody was left behind and

that all were accounted for.

Stage 1 saw competitors leave Sunbury and head towards Riddells Creek via

the back roads; past the Sunbury and Riddells Creek airfields and the out-skirts of the small town of Clarkefield. Everyone did very well in this stage

(that is, they didn’t get lost!) and soon we were all lined up in Riddells Creek having a lovely morning tea in the sun.

There was no time to waste and soon we kicked off the first of the competi-

tors for Stage 2. This stage headed towards Romsey for lunch, again via the

back roads. From the centre of Riddells Creek, competitors headed north. There was a question not too far out of town: what is to your left at 2.7km?

Hint: people are ________ to get there! Yes, it was the cemetery… and peo-ple are dying to get there! Two points! Further north, over the hills, through

the township of Cherokee and down to Romsey.

Everyone arrived in Romsey, albeit in a slightly different order. Yes, some

had taken wrong turns but managed to find their way back to the main track and get to Romsey for lunch. A perfect lunch in the park was enjoyed by all.

The sun was out, the BBQ was fired up by a few while others headed to the shops. A couple of older ex-members visited for lunch – Stephen’s parents

stopped by to catch up with those they hadn’t seen in years and meet all

other members too.

After lunch, Stage 3 was underway. This stage, broken into two parts, would see competitors head from Romsey to Darraweit Guim… again, via the back

roads! Starting by heading north towards Lancefield, then turning right off

the main road and hitting the dirt again. Down into the valleys (and over a few rivers via one-lane bridges) and then up to the tops of hills through

some really picturesque countryside. Made even more picturesque by the fact that the sun was out in full force for the first time proper after a cold

winter.

A brief stop was had in Darraweit Guim (next to the Primary School with

large pencils defining the entrance!) and then another kick off for our final destination. Where was it to be?! More challenging directions, questions

Page: 12

TRIP REPORTS

and hints resulted in a few wrong turns by some competitors. But they were

back on track in no time and heading the right way. It was around 3:15pm and the first vehicle drove under the Hume Highway through the town of

Beveridge, turned left, went just a couple hundred metres and pulled up, as per the navigational notes, at our final destination outside the Beveridge Tav-

ern; a quaint old country pub with bluestone walls. Slowly, everyone else

arrived and gathered out the back around a big table on the deck in the sun. All enjoyed a beverage at the Beveridge Tavern!

Scores were totalled and answers provided to the group before the leaders

board was read out. Everyone finished tied either first, second or third! It was a great effort in answering some tricky and some not so tricky questions

throughout the day… and most of all, not getting lost!

Well done to all for your participation and thank you for making it a great

day! Thanks go, in particular, to Jason (thanks Bro!) for helping make the day run as smoothly as possible.

Looking forward to possibly running a few more of these in the future!

SUBARU XV

The Subaru XV was released last year, however it was only recently that I

was able to drive it. There are three in the model range: XV 2.0i, 2.0i-L and top spec 2.0i-S.

I was asked by a friend to take an XV from Cambur Subaru in Frankston to

Werribee and back for a photo shoot. This gave me a good opportunity to try

it out on the road, however I did not manage to get any off road driving as it was a dealer demonstrator.

The model available was the base level 2.0i with the continuously variable

transmission. And it was orange, of course! The steering wheel had paddles to change ‘gears’, but they were not really necessary as the transmission

seemed to be in the right ratio at the right time. I say ratio, as the

transmission is constantly variable so there are no gears as such. When I did press the accelerator firmly, the revs picked up as the computer system

chose a more aggressive ratio. This gave the impression of a downshift, which I am sure would keep the traditionalists happy.

The car was a pleasure to drive. It was quick off the mark when required, and handled the corners very well. I am not so sure how it would handle off

the bitumen, though. The XV does not come with X-Mode, even as an option. Nor does it come with the ability to tick the box for SI-Drive or Eyesight at

time of purchase either. Of course, having not actually driven the car on any challenging terrain I may be judging the XV harshly.

I found it easy to get comfortable behind

the wheel, with plenty o f a d j u s t m e n t

possible, even for my

tall frame. After adjusting my seat,

there was still plenty of room to sit in the

back seat. There is a

reasonable amount of space in the luggage

area, some of which has been taken up by

a slightly higher floor to accommodate the spare wheel. I was disappointed

to see that there is not a full size spare, only a temporary one. I would have thought that Subaru Australia would have learnt by now, with all the

negative comments. The lifted floor indicates that the spare is bigger than the originally specified one - but still not big enough for my liking.

I drove the car for about 200km, and the vehicle averaged about 7l/100km, which is pretty impressive for a vehicle of this size, running on regular

unleaded. I look forward to trying the car off road to see how well it lives up to its

marketing.

I am grateful to Paul Hicks from Cambur Subaru in Frankston for the use of

the vehicle.

Martin has sent the outstanding edition to the Library. ● Emailing address to sending emails to all members

Michael has investigated the issue and it is possible to set up an email address that will then forward to email to all club members in the distribution list. Will need to set up a name that is not easily guessed by spammers. Would have two lists – an official members list, and an opt-out resource advertising list.

Action: Michael to set up the lists. ● Membership application form update for club’s postal address.

The application form has been updated by Andrew and the website has the updated version.

● Annual registration

Will be done in the next few weeks. ● Buchan shelter

The truck may not be available.

Will remove the shelter on the Labour Day weekend next March.

● Attendance sheet

It has been updated and was used at the September 2013 meeting.

● Subaru Docklands

The training will occur in November 2013.

An alternative option is to set it up electronically, either as a spreadsheet or a database – either pc or club website based.

Jessica moved a motion that: 1. The club expresses its disappointment in the conduct of the

members concerned, and 2. The committee resolves to improve its new member induction

and social media guidelines in order to reduce the likelihood of the occurrence of similar issues in the future, and

3. The committee determines that this matter is closed and resolved.
