1. System OverviewIntroduction & Application

A Ruggedized Camera Encoder (RCE) is a compact and robust system that analyzes a stream of image data in real-time. Typically, video analytics are completed using post processing techniques on a unit that is separate from the camera stream. This system will eliminate the need for post processing, which cuts down on turnaround time and the need for a secondary system. The goal of this project is to deliver a working prototype that will have a small enclosure, with two tethered camera inputs, acquiring HD 1080p 30fps image data. The system will be capable of processing the image data in real-time running different video analytics algorithms. It will be capable of streaming compressed image data over GigE to a standard video client for diagnostics.

Comparable Technologies Trade Analysis

This aim of this project is to design a product that will be competitive when compared to ruggedized video-encoding-capable systems. This section is devoted to presenting several other video encoders on the market. Information was mined from each of the components, including:

The remainder of this section will address several products in this space and present a thorough benchmark analysis of each product. Devices that were analyzed included video encoders and ruggedized computers.

XPand6103: Rugged and Compact Intel Core i7-Based Fan-less Embedded Box PCThe XPand6103 is a rugged compact PC with four rugged M12 input connectors. It is shock, and temperature variation resistant. This product is used in autonomous vehicle applications in addition to a host of other applications.

Axis Q7424-R: Compact Video EncoderThe Axis Q7424-R is a ruggedized high performance 1-4 channel standalone solution, designed to interface with analog cameras. This product is advertised as being commonly used in surveillance applications.

VideoJet X40: Rugged Video Encoder (Discontinued)The VideoJet X40 encoder is an industrial-grade high-performance CCTV (closed circuit television) video encoder. This product is advertised as being commonly used in industrial applications.

iVDO H264: Single Channel Encoder/DecoderThe iVDO H264 is a single-input high-definition multi-media encoder/decoder. This product is used in military applications.

VPort 364A: 4-Channel Industrial Video EncoderThe VPort 364A is an industrial-grade, mountable video encoder with proprietary configuration software. This product is used in industrial applications.

XVC-SDI: High Quality Serial Digital Video EncoderThe XVC-SDI is a high-quality, high-performance video encoder with two 1080p30 inputs, which may be combined to form a single 1080p60 stream. This product is used in critical video processing systems as well as a host of other applications.

TS606N: Waterproof Network Video EncoderThe TS606N is a mid-quality, waterproofed video encoder with BNC connectors. This product is used for surveillance.

RE0911: Ruggedized Micro-ComputerThe RE0911 is a ruggedized MIL-STD-810 compliant computer system. This product is used for military applications.

2. ConclusionThe aforementioned products were analyzed on 25 different metrics.

From this analysis it was concluded that the final solution would need to meet several requirements to be considered competitive:

1. Cost Effectivity: Based upon the products that were evaluated, the maximum and minimum price points were approximately $1,300.00, and $900.00, respectively. However, data on this metric was limited--there were only two products that provided price information.

2. Ruggedization: Systems in this space must meet shock, and waterproofing requirements. The important shock standards under consideration are EN50155, NEMA TS 2, and MIL-STD-810; the important waterproofing standard is IP67. The final product should withstand between 10% and 95% humidity. Aluminum alloy casing is preferred to enhance heat dissipation.

3. Network Connectivity: The majority of systems, to enable modularity, are designed to integrate high-speed Ethernet.

4. Storage Capacity: The RCE system must be capable of storing data from the high-speed input stream(s). Furthermore, the ability to upgrade the storage is desirable.

5. Compactness: The enclosure must be reasonably sized to compare with the dimensions of the competing technologies. From the analysis of the 8 products, the average of the weight of the components was 4.155 lbs.; the dimensions of the comparable products are presented in a bar chart below.

6. I/O Availability: The system should have GigE compatibility, UART, and HDMI for the sake of flexibility. Furthermore, coaxial cabling should be used for the input(s). The system should process input at Gigabit speeds and process video data with sub 100ms latency.

7. Real-time Processing Capability: The RCE system should utilize a processor that is capable of managing the input data-rate, with minimal loss of information.

8. Robust Power Compatibility: The system should operate across a wide range of voltages and low power consumption. For the comparable technologies, the maximum and minimum power consumption values were 22W and 7.5W, respectively.The complete data set, upon which this analysis is based, is available
