The Securities andExchange Board of India(Sebi) on Thursday

scrapped fines on listed com-panies unable to meet the min-imum public holding norms, continuing its efforts to helpbusinesses navigate the cur-rent turmoil.

The market regulator said itwill not impose fines on com-panies that are unable toachieve the minimum publicshareholding (MPS) of 25%between 1 March and 31August.

A Sebi circular said fines lev-ied by exchanges after 1 Marchwill also be withdrawn. Underthe rules, stock exchanges areto levy a penalty of ₹10,000per day on companies for notmeeting the public floatrequirement, with the amountcredited to the investor pro-tection fund of exchanges.

Only a handful of privatesector firms are yet to meet theMPS limit, whereas more than90 public sector undertakingsare still to comply.

The relaxation will benefitcompanies where promoterholding has exceeded 75% dueto open offers or other acquisi-tions.

The current MPS of 25%came into effect in 2013. The2019 Union budget proposedto raise this to 35%; Sebi hasnot notified the change yet.

Sebi has been engaged inmarket consultations toremove compliance hurdlesfor companies during the pan-demic. On Thursday, it easedthe procedural constraints fortakeover and buybacks.

Sebi chairman Ajay Tyagiattended a conference call onWednesday with Ficci, wherein the industry bodyraised several issues in light ofthe lockdown such as raisingof capital, corporate debt mar-ket and disclosures.

Wholesale food infla-tion declined to3.6% in April from

5.49% a month ago, thedepartment for promotion ofindustry and internal trade(DPIIT) said on Thursday.

However, data released bythe National Statistical Office(NSO) last week showed thatretail food inflation rose to10.5% in April from 8.76% amonth ago.

Wholesale fuel inflationcontracted 10.1% during Aprilfrom a deflation of 1.76% amonth ago, while price move-ment of primary articlesentered deflationary territorywith 0.79% contraction inApril against 3.72% inflation amonth ago.

The industry departmenton Thursday released onlyprice movement of select sub-groups for wholesale priceinflation.

This follows the suspensionof the release of headline retailinflation print for April by NSObecause of the disruption indata collection as a result ofmobility restrictions imposedto fight covid-19.

“In view of the preventivemeasures and announcementof nationwide lockdown by thegovernment to contain spreadof covid-19 pandemic, theprice collection of manufac-tured products through per-sonal visits of price collectorswas suspended with effectfrom 19 March 2020. The data(ex-factory prices) was col-lected through electronicmeans of communicationsfrom select factories and insti-tutional sources. The pricemovement of these sub-groups/groups of WPI wasworked out by taking the pri-ces of only those items forwhich at least 25% of pricequotations were reported fromthe selected manufacturingunits,” said the industrydepartment.

scription-based recurring revenue offersin India is equivalent to, if not ahead of, theglobal average.

As the home becomes the base camp forall activities, we expect demand for cloud-delivered subscription software, espe-cially in collaboration, software, analytics, automation, and management, to pick up.Has the demand for your collabora-tion tool Webex gone up with every-one resorting to WFH?

Traffic on Webex has increased severaltimes since the outbreak began. In March,we registered more than 14.3 billion min-utes of Webex usage globally. This rose to24 billion minutes in April. In India, wehad 6.3 million meetings in March. Thatnumber went over 10 million in April. Wehad more than 50 million Webex attend-ees in India in April, compared to 20 mil-lion in March. It’s not just for businesses.Even government leaders are using oursolutions to connect and interact witheach other. In India, we have enabledmore than 200 government entities andhealthcare organizations that are in thefront line of managing this crisis.

In Karnataka, more than 25,000 healthworkers were trained on covid-19response using Cisco Webex.

Many are using our solutions to learnmusic and prepare for exams. More than5,000 hours of lectures were conductedin the top 40 institutes in India usingCisco technologies. Several high courtsand district courts have started usingCisco Webex over the last few weeks. How do you see the roll-out and adop-tion of 5G in India in these circum-

stances?The uncertainty cre-

ated by covid-19 couldpush back the upcomingspectrum auctions, whichcould ripple into a delayin the mass roll-out of 5Gas well.

However, there is nodoubt that the situationhas accelerated the adop-tion of digital technolo-gies, creating new possi-bilities, and introducingnew ideas.

In this emerging era, as people increas-ingly switch to digital platforms to work, play, learn, shop, transact, connect, andmore, high-speed broadband and 5G willbecome essential to our lives, much likeelectricity.

Networking major Cisco hasenabled all its employees towork from home (WFH) andhas seen a significant rise indemand for its collaboration

tool Webex since the outbreak of thenovel coronavirus. In an interview,Sameer Garde, president, Cisco India andSaarc, spoke about how it is well-posi-tioned to manage the WFH transition inthe times of the pandemic, the rise indemand for Webex, and the rise of thesubscription model. Edited excerpts:As Cisco is known to have a flexiblework culture, was the transition to acomplete WFH model in the lock-down any different?

Cisco has a well-established process tocoordinate efforts during an event such asthe coronavirus outbreak. Our top priorityis to keep our employees safe and produc-tive, so we implemented a global WFHpolicy for all employees on17 March, including 11,000Cisco India employees, aswell as several thousand partner and ven-dor employees in India. Fortunately, Ciscois uniquely positioned to manage thistransition. Remote working is not new toCisco. We were among the early adoptersof flexible timings and provided the work-from-anywhere option to more than 80%of our workforce before the crisis.

We, therefore, had the back end infra-structure to switch to a new working stylequickly, securely, and seamlessly…We arecommitted to ensuring their businesscontinuity from home until it is necessary. What are some of the key customerconcerns and challenges amid thecovid-19 crisis?

The current crisis is entirely differentfrom any other the world has ever seen, inscale, nature, and impact. Therefore, many companies had to remodel theirbusiness continuity plans to accommo-date the radical measures that this pan-demic has necessitated. In some cases, ourcustomers had to come up with strategiesto keep their employees safe, both physi-

cally and digitally, as well as productive, overnight. In times like these, experienceand knowledge of how to enable this tran-sition is your biggest advantage.

Cisco made its products, policies, plans, and processes on remote business conti-

nuity available to everyoneand gave our customersaccess to several best prac-

tices we employ ourselves and with othercustomers. This has helped several largeIT and enabled services, financial services, and public sector companies in India tomove their workforce to remote over-night. In April, weengaged with more than600 customers to helpthem with business con-tinuity plans in India. Atthe same time, we haveenabled more than250,000 knowledgeworkers in India to workfrom home securely. As per your last earn-ings, 72% of your soft-ware is sold as sub-scriptions. Has cov-id-19 increased the demand for thesubscription model?

I can say that software and services playa central role in Cisco’s ongoing transfor-mation. The momentum that we haveseen in this whole transition towards sub-
