Mayor, Paul Pisasale, presented us with a beautiful Chinese brush painting that was gifted to the Ipswich City Council by Shandong U3A in November 2016. The brush painting was hung by our fabulous Campus Manager, Geoff Mayhew, and is proudly gracing the wall of the reception office so please do come down and have a look. The new campus is proving to be a hit and is quite a hub not just for classes but for getting together. The Mayor also presented Shirley Ferrier, one of founding member of U3A and tutor of 23 years, with a certificate of acknowledgement for her wonderful contribution to our organisation and to the Ipswich community. Julie Porteous and Greg Doolan, President and Vice President of the U3A Network Queensland (left side of photo) came along to support us. It was a pleasure to meet them and we look forward to being part of the greater U3A network. Your management committee has been doing quite a lot this year so here is an update on what’s been happening and what’s coming up.

Introduction of Associate Member/ Friends of U3A: At a Special General Meeting on 24 January, it was unanimously decided to re-activate this class of membership to enable people to attend U3A social events and one-off activities for $10 for the year. Associate Members are precluded from attending regular U3A classes. Should they wish to register for classes, they will be required to pay the balance of the membership to bring them to the full status of “ordinary member”. So let your friends and family know about this and they won’t miss out on our social gatherings.

U3A Network Queensland: We recently joined the network to be part of the wider U3A in Queensland and take advantage of all they have to offer (see January 2017 newsletter). It is hoped that Paulette Montaigne and Anna Bradbury will be able to attend the network’s Queensland State Conference and Annual General Meeting on Thursday 18th and Friday 19th May 2017 at Twin Towns, NSW. This is a chance to network, gather ideas and share experiences. Any U3A member may attend so visit their website for more info: www.u3aqldconference.org

Expos: On 2nd & 16th March, Anna Bradbury and volunteer Glenys Williamson held a stand at the Ageing Stronger Active Longer six week seniors’ program run

by the Ipswich City Council. Anna also spoke about U3A to an audience of around 100 people. Many of those attending hadn’t heard of U3A so it was a very worthwhile experience.

During the Ipswich Festival week in May, there is a program running called Urban Lounge which will be held at the City Mall. Two of our classes will be performing: Friday 2 May, 3.30 – 4 pm– Line Dancing Wednesday 10 May, 3.30 – 4 pm – Tai Chi

Come along and enjoy a great afternoon’s entertainment and support these classes. Plans are well under way for See Create Connect Expo where U3A is partnering with Ipswich City Council to present this engaging day on Tuesday 22 August as part of Seniors’ Week. This will be held at the Corporate Centre, 43 The Terrace, North Ipswich.

Seniors’ Consultative Committee (see January

2017 newsletter for more details): We are now attending these meetings on a regular bimonthly basis so if you have anything you would like to ask Cr David Pahlke, who chairs these meetings, please ring Paulette - 0498 200 055, or Anna – 0404 758 405, and they will ensure David hears your concerns.

The Tax Help program is a free and confidential service for those who need help completing their tax returns online and they need volunteers. As a Tax Help volunteer, you will join a network of hundreds of other volunteers

who in 2016 assisted more than 30,000 individuals complete their tax returns.

The program runs from July to October 2017 in community centres, libraries and other community organisations across Australia.

Don’t worry if you don’t have any tax knowledge - you and your fellow Tax Help volunteers will be trained and accredited by the ATO prior to the program commencing. All you need is a few hours to spare each week and a passion for helping those in your community.

To find out more about being a Tax Help volunteer, and how to register, visit the ATO website. Registrations for the program close on 15 April 2017.

Hi. My name is Norah Blunden and I retired a couple of years ago and joined U3A Ipswich last year. I moved to Gailes in the early 1980s after spending nearly two years overseas in England and Europe on the traditional Seventies “working holiday”.

However I have always worked in Brisbane so am just beginning to find out more about Ipswich. I was born in Taroom, a small town in Central Western Queensland, north-west of Miles and came to Brisbane after leaving school aged 15 years to find work.

My hobbies are bird watching, camping, beading and community theatre. I do “front of house” for a small amateur theatre in Chelmer. And I go camping quite often for bird watching and with other friends

Other things I am interested in are human rights and current events generally. I also do other volunteer work for Anglicare with their home assist area and supporting people with mental health issues.

I have taken on the role of Tutor Coordinator so if you have any queries or suggestions, please email me on: [email protected] or phone me on: 0421 282 052

ELDER WISDOM

Accept the fact that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the statue!

Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

The best way to forget all your troubles is to wear tight shoes.

I read this article that said the typical symptoms of stress are: eating too much, impulse buying, and driving too fast. Are they kidding? That’s my idea of a perfect day!

TERM 2, 2017 - CLASS ANNOUNCEMENTS

(at the City Mall campus unless otherwise stated)

Your committee are always on the lookout for new classes for you to enjoy so if you know of anyone who has a passion in a particular area and would like to share it with others, let them know we would love to talk with them. A tutor does not have to be a qualified teacher but be able to share their knowledge with other adults in such a way as to keep them interested and increase their learning.

There may be a tutor in you? If you don’t try, you won’t know. Recently both French tutors, Marie Davidson and Paulette Montaigne, were absent for extended periods of time. Students were grateful to Elisabeth Thexton and Gaetan Augustin, both members of U3A, for stepping in and keeping the classes going. Un grand merci to Elisabeth and Gaetan. In the case of Spanish, Hernan Martinez has taken a well earned break. Barbara Saba has taken over his three classes for the next three months.

If you do know of someone who is interested in becoming one of our tutors, then Norah Blunden can be contacted on Email: [email protected] or Mobile: 0421 282052.
