Drainage is a big problem in any city.Frequent digging on the roads andfootpaths causes big problem to citizens.The foul smell from the drainage is anuisance and municipal authorities findit difficult to overcome this perennialproblem. The same problem is faced inresidential areas also.

Fabrica of Sunrise group have found away to overcome this problem by layinga concealed drain in stainless steel.They, along with the help of the Germanarchitect Mr. Hartmut Wurster fromBlocher Blocher India, who isresponsible for the whole project of theMondeal Retail Park, have undertakenthis work on behalf of HN Safal, a leadingreal estate developer in Ahmedabad.

The stainless steel drainage is coveringa length of 230 meters and has a depthof 120 mm. Three tonnes of SS 304 gradesheets of 1.5 mm thickness in matt finishwas used for this work. Stainless steelhas been selected by the builder bykeeping in view the long life and rust freenature of the material. Since this drainageis meant only for rainwater discharge,and considering the inherent smoothsurface of stainless steel, it was felt that120mm depth of the drain is sufficient totake care of the flow.

The stainless steel drain is placed justbelow the floor surface and is fullycovered with tiles and seamlesslymerges with the rest of the flooring in thearea. Instead of an eyesore, the

concealed drain gives a beautiful look tothe area. The walk way area is so neatand clean that it becomes difficult toimagine that there is drainageunderneath. This sculpture which is highlighting theentrance to the business park wasdesigned in this vibrant and sparklingmanner to give an idea of the characterof business opportunities available forthem inside the park.

This sculpture is meant to be very easilyrecognizable, especially to those drivingpast. It has several open box sectionsmade from stainless steel sheets (304)differing in sizes and located at differentheights, lined up on slim stainless steelpipes. By repetition, layering andoverlapping the positions of the boxes, avisual moving effect is created for peoplein a moving car. The result is, people ina car feel that not only they are moving,but the sculpture is also moving on itsown.

The charm of an elegant, silent andstationary sculpture is in the contrastbetween the stiff appearance of stainlesssteel parts on the one side and the visual

effect of movement on those passing byon the other side.

The sculpture is fabricated and installedby the Sunrise Group, Ahmedabad,

Gujarat, who are well known for thearchitectural work in stainless steel. Theyhave used about 1 ton of 1.5 mmthickness stainless steel sheets in mattfinish. The sculpture is 20 feet high and3.6 feet wide.

Chimpanzee Sanctuary : Where Strength Meets Style

Innovation in zoo enclosure design isa key feature of the recently completed$7.5 mil l ion makeover of theChimpanzee Sanctuary at Sydney’sTaronga Zoo.

The project brief was to create achimpanzee habitat akin to their nativehome that would encourage socialinteraction and allow the zoo’s primatekeepers to manage animal husbandryand the group’s changingdemographic. The enclosure’stransparency and the abi l i ty towithstand the chimpanzee’sremarkable strength and intelligencewere essential.

ASSDA member Ronstan TensileArchitecture was contracted by thebuilder, the Lipman Group, to be thespecialist contractor for the technicaldesign and installation of a meshenclosure and non-climbable wall.Ronstan’s unique capability in tensilearchitecture and their technicalexpertise were a natural fit for thischallenging project designed byJackson Teece Architects.

The Sanctuary features the meshseparation paddock (similar to anaviary), at one end of the main exhibit.

A non-climbable wall with a removablecurtain, allows both spaces to functionas one large paddock. This enablesintroduction of new chimpanzees intothe compound and helps manage theapes’ complex behaviour patterns.

Ronstan Tensile Architecture’s GeneralManager, Rowan Murray, said the non-climbable wall structure was one of themost challenging design aspects.

“The architect’s greatest challenge wasto separate the chimpanzeesphysically, but still have them all in viewin the paddock. We had to build a wallthat was transparent, had openings ofno more than 5mm to avoidchimpanzees putting their fingers in andclimbing, and could withstand thestrength of chimpanzees” Mr Murraysaid.

Intermediate Metro Cars for DMRC:Based on the expertise and experiencegained by BEML in manufacturingStainless Steel Metro cars, BEMLreceived order from DMRC for indigenousdesign & development of 8 nos. ofintermediate metro cars for upgradingexisting 4 car train formation to 6 car trainformation to enhance passenger carryingcapacity. BEML successfully designed& developed the intermediate cars andthe so developed cars have beencommissioned and put into service atDMRC, Delhi. Based on the satisfactoryperformance of these cars, DMRC hasplaced an order for further 136 Nos ofintermediate metro cars which has added

a value of Rs. 925 Crores to thecompany’s turnover. With the Indigenousdevelopment of Intermediate Metro Cars,BEML has established its technologicalprowess in the Metro Rail businessconsistent with quality standards of anyGlobal Player.

Jaipur Metro: BEML has also baggedJaipur Metro order valued at Rs 318 crore.The order is to manufacture, supply, testand commission 10 train sets of four-careach, totaling 40 cars.

What’s cooking: Empty pots & pans drip food for thoughtSubodh Gupta’s London Masterpiece Housed in Saket Mall

Step inside the foyer in front of the KiranNadar Museum of Art, Saket and youcan’t help but be taken aback by whatyou see and dwarfed in its presence.It’s a 36 feet by 36 feet installation,weighing 26 tonnes, and made usingstainless steel kitchen utensils - itsartist Subodh Gupta’s monumental‘Line of Control’.

Avid art collector Kiran Nadar first sawthe piece in London at the Tate Triennial2009 at Tate Britain, and she says itimmediately overwhelmed her. At thecentre of a grandiose building was thismodern, cutting edge work of art thatcreated a huge stir among the peoplethen, she says. The indelible impact thepiece had on her made her acquire it forher personal collection, which shedisplays at her museum at DLF SouthCourt Mall. The piece- too big to fit insidethe actual museum is placed just

outside, and spans almost the entireheight and width of the area.

The imposing mushroom shaped cloudform of the installation represents theparadox in Indian reality, says Gupta,who first conceptualized the piece in2005 but began working on it only in2006. I am very fascinated by thesebrilliant utensils. They are shiny but theemptiness of utensils shows no food.Similarly, one aspect of India may beshining, but another may not,” hesays. But the piece has many differentlayers that bring it together, he adds.Nadar says it represents the nuclearcloud after Hiroshima, andsymbolizes the carnage that canoccur.

Bringing the installation here fromLondon was a herculean task and it tookmonths of preparation. The floor had to

be reinforced from the basement to beable to withstand the weight of thepiece, and it took the crew seven longdays to complete the actualinstallation.

A strong believer that art needs to beaccessible to everybody, Nadar saysshe hopes people are intrigued to lookat the piece carefully and react to itpositively. But love it or hate it, it’s apiece that is impossible to ignore. ‘‘Maybe we get more footfall at the museumwith this work as well,” she says.Roobina Karoode, director, KNMA,says that in installations like this, publicparticipation adds to the experience ofthe artwork, “When peoplecircumambulate, or look up at it, theybecome participants and not justspectators. She says she plans tocollect public response to the piece, togauge how different people react to it.

Material of Construction: Thestainless steel metro coach carbody isconstructed with cold rolled stainlesssteel of grade SUS301L in different coldrolled tempers of low tensile (LT), specialtensile (ST), deadlite tensile (DLT) & hightensile (HT). Almost all parts of thecarbody structure except bolster andcenter sill is constructed with stainlesssteel. Around 10 MT of stainless steelis used for the car body construction.These Metro cars are unpainted with sidewall skin of special dull finish stainlesssteel sheet to provide the requiredaesthetics for the unpainted exterior.Apart from the carbody, SS has beenused for seats, hand holds, grab poles,bracketories & battery box.

Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) for IR:As a proactive step in extending thebenefits of stainless steel metrotechnology for other coaching stock ofIndian Railways, BEML took up thechallenging task of re-designing theexisting corten steel EMU coach bodywith more modern stainless steelcarbody design. The innovative designwas well taken by RDSO and adevelopmental order for design,development & manufacture of 18 nos.of stainless steel EMUs is placed byIndian Railways. The first rake of 9 carsdesigned & developed by BEML is

cleared by RDSO and RITES and isready for dispatch to Eastern Railways.The new design of stainless steel EMU(SS EMU) has been evolved for the firsttime in the country to replace the existingconventional corten steel EMUs whichare more prone to corrosion. Designingthe carbody with Stainless steel hasresulted in cars which are modern, cleanand aesthetically appealing and moreimportantly un-painted coaches, whichcauses environmental hazards.

A/C and non-Air Conditioned EMUs:The design of stainless steel carbody hasbeen developed not only to cater for thepresent requirement of non-airconditioned EMUs but also to cater forfuture requirement of air conditionedEMUs. The exteriors of the conventionalEMU has been totally re-designedensuring better aesthetics, moredurability and easier maintenance. Theconventional steel structure front end ofthe Motor coach has been replaced withthe innovatively designed FRP cab maskand cab skirt which provide a modernaesthetic appeal to the coach. IndianRailways plan to gradually replace theexisting corrosion-prone corten steelEMUs with stainless steel EMUs inCalcutta, Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi .BEML foresees a huge business potentialfor the newly developed Stainless SteelEMUs.

State-of-the-art Facilities: To caterto the fast growing need of stainlesssteel metro cars and stainless steel

EMUs for Indian railways, BEML hasearmarked the manufacturing facility atBangalore Complex for manufacturingstate-of-the-art SS Metro cars and SSEMUs and the facilities are beingcontinuously upgraded to meet therequired capacity and standards.

Stainless Steel Wagons: BEML hasalso developed a prototype stainlesssteel 100T wagon, jointly with M/s SteelAuthority of India Ltd (SAIL) for the firsttime in the country. These wagons havebeen gaining significance overconventional mild steel wagons becauseof less corrosion, less fuel consumptionin empty running, less abrasion,throughput enhancement and reductionin turnaround time of wagon due to fewerdetentions etc. As Indian Railways (IR)are expanding their freight transportationfacilities in a very big way and have takenup the project to construct DedicatedMultimodal High Axle Load FreightCorridor with computerised control on theGolden Quadrilateral routes linking themetropolitan regions of New Delhi,Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai, stainlesssteel 100T wagons with higher pay loadcapacities find a major place in Freightcorridor network.

SS 316L Retention Tanks for Processing Waste in Railway Coach Toilets

The Indian Railways are taking steps toimprove cleanliness and hygiene in andaround Railway stations and along thetracks throughout the Rail system.Important among the measures to keepthe Railway stations clean is theintroduction of modular type Retention-Tank system in railway coaches.

Toilets currently used on passengercoaches of Indian Railways are of theflush type in which waste and water isdischarged directly on the trackswithout any treatment. This makes theenvironment unhygienic, besidesresulting in corrosion of track fittings.In a train moving at high speed, thisdischarge is the main reason forcorrosion of the underside of coaches.Repair & maintenance of suchundersides of coaches becomes mostunpleasant.

This recently developed Retention Tanksystem of the Indian Railways usesbacteria to treat waste. These bacterialive on human waste and also regeneratethemselves. It is thus a continuouscycle of processing human wastewithout any intervention. The anaerobic(living in the absence of free oxygen)bacteria inside the Retention Tanksconsume waste material and convert itinto water and gas.

The water is passed through a chlorinetank and made free from pathogen (anagent that causes disease) anddischarged as clean water. The gasgenerated in the process is releasedinto the atmosphere through a smallvent provided at the top of the coach.

Human waste and the bacteria used inthis system create an extremelycorrosive environment and ordinary mildsteel will not be able to withstandservice for any length of time. Hence,highly corrosion resistant stainlesssteel grade 316L 16.00/ 18.00%chromium, 10.00/14.00% nickel and 2-3% molybdenum is used for the tanksand fittings of bio-toilets. Limiting thelevel of carbon to 0.030% (maximum)in SS 316L enhances the weldability andfabrication properties making it an idealmaterial for success of the RetentionTanks over the life of the coach.

On Railway Board’s directives, theseRetention Tanks have been on trial runson a few long distance trains on a trialbasis and their performance has beenmonitored and reviewed periodically. Onthe basis of the encouraging results,induction of about 2,500 more toiletshas been recommended in the Railbudget 2012.

The Indian Railways regularly use morethan 40,000 coaches for passengerservice. Thus, if this design of Retention

Tanks becomes successful, the IndianRailways could have a requirement ofover 100,000 Retention Tanks whichwould translate into a huge marketpotential of high grade stainless steelfor this new application over a period oftime.

Outokumpu India Gets ‘Oceantex 2012 Leadership and Excellence Award’

There are about 900 small sized steelproducts fabrication units in Salemdistrict in Tamil Nadu with a turnover ofabout 625 crore/annum and employingabout 12,000 people. They fabricateproducts like window grills, truss workand parts for washing machines andhydro-extractor and tumble drier partsfor the textile and garments sector. Theyalso cater to machinery for the chemicaland food processing industries, dairyequipment, automotive components,building and construction products etc.These units are engaged in welding,sheet cutting and shearing of mild steel.

These units have seen very little growthin the last few years and their profitsdwindling, threatening the jobs of 12,000workers.

The Salem District Small Scale and TinyIndustries Association (SADISSTIA) ledby Er. Kandasamy Mariappan has takenthe initiative to help these units switchto fabricating stainless steel instead ofmild steel which could lead to enhancedgrowth of these units and also assurethe jobs of 12,000 workers and hopefullyincrease employment opportunities inthese units.

& Small Enterprises - ClusterDevelopment Programme (MSE-CDP)scheme.

SADISSTIA had very encouragingresponse to this initiative and asuccessful meeting of stake-holderswas held in Salem on April 20, 2012 atPeriyar University (see photo).

From the stainless steel marketdevelopment point of view, this initiativeof SADISSTIA is fully in line with theefforts of ISSDA to make stainless steelproducts available in smaller towns andcities of the country.

The world is talkingincreasingly about sustainability and new grades of stainlesssteel are being recommended or specified in the hydrocarbonsector worldwide to prevent corrosion and ensure a muchlonger maintenance free operation cycle.

Outokumpu India has been aggressively promoting the useof duplex stainless steel in the sector by sharing the successstories of new innovative applications, educated andenlightened the sector participants. This important work hasbeen noticed and appreciated by the industry.

The structural complexity of the non-climbable wall required 3D modelling toanalyse design configurations andensure structural integrity. Test panelsof the non-cl imbable wall werefabricated and assessed in thechimpanzees’ temporary enclosure todetermine which would offer the safestcontainment of the site and minimisevisibility.

Mr Murray said the primary structurefor the wall consists of a Ronstansupplied tensile cable net that supportssemi-transparent perforated stainlesssteel panels.

“Most materials can be damaged, butthe durability of stainless steel panelsof certain perforation proved to be theright solution and important in thedevelopment of the overall design,” hesaid.

The non-climbable wall had beendesigned with wall panels clampeddirectly to the enclosure mesh face. Ina collaborative effort, we changed thisto an independent cable net structureto remove the risk of having the finalwall shape differ from that modelled,and in doing so, avoided the risk ofpanel geometry differing from thecomplex 10 degree incline necessaryfor non-climbability. This also ensureduniform set out and fixing methods,more consistent panel shapes andallowed the panel geometry to drive thewall structure rather than this beingdetermined by other elements.”

ASSDA member, Locker Group,supplied the grade 304 stainless steelpanels, which were perforated to 50%.A black painted finish was appliedbefore installation.

With str ingent performancecharacteristics to adhere to, includinglong-term corrosion resistance andaesthetics, Carl Stahl X-Tend stainlesssteel mesh was specified for theseparation enclosure and the removablecurtain within the non-climbable wall.The stainless steel mesh wasblackened using an electrolytic processto increase transparency of theenclosure.

Trevor Williams, Lead Consultant ofJackson Teece and Project Architectfor the development, said materialsselection was critical in delivering theaesthetic appeal and longevity of theenclosure.

“We spoke with Ronstan TensileArchitecture for technical design advicein the early stages of the project. Therewere various other types of meshes thatwere a possibility but, being a dynamicstructure, alternate materials were fartoo rigid and not as flexible as the CarlStahl X-Tend stainless steel mesh. Idon’t think we could have achieved thisoutcome with any other mesh,” MrWilliams said.

“The stainless steel will have a longerlife in the aggressive south-facingcoastal environment. The blackenedmesh has a fantastic form and from anarchitectural point of view, has achievedan organic appearance.”

Ronstan Tensile Architecture’scontribution to the project, including thetensile mesh enclosure and non-climbable wall, cost about $1.2 millionand took 16 weeks to construct.

Mr Murray said the stainless steeldemonstrates a great mix of strength

and transparency, and the end tensileresult is very forgiving.

”Achieving the architectural intentinvolved complex modelling and finiteanalysis of the mesh form to ensurethe surrounding structures could bedesigned to support the enclosureloads. Ronstan is absolutely rapt withthe state-of-the-art structure,” he said.

The paddock was completely re-landscaped and the impressive exhibitalso now features several climbingplatforms at varying heights of up to 12metres, and a 180 kilogram hammockfor the chimpanzees to enjoy.

Preliminary figures released by theInternational Stainless Steel Forum(ISSF) indicates that stainless steelproduction grew by 3.3% in 2011. Totalproduction was 32.1 million metrictonnes (Mt), a new record for a singleyear.

Although there was some destockingnoted during the third quarter of 2011,this was partially compensated duringthe final three months of the year. Theincrease in 2011 production comes ontop of a 25% increase in 2010 whichfollowed the economic crisis of 2008/2009. The recovery of the industry provesthat a century after its discovery and

World Stainless Steel Production Uptrend in the Year 2011

Over the past few years, the stainless steel market has seen major changes in the grades of stainless produced. Chromium-manganese grades have become increasingly important in this time. More recently, production of chromium grades has alsoincreased. Table 3 shows the market share of the three main categories of stainless steel. The data is based on reports fromISSF’s stainless steel producing members.

Not all of the stainless producing regionsof the world have developed at the samepace in 2011. Excluding China,production in the Asia region declinedby 2.7% to 8.8 Mt during 2011. InTaiwan, China production declined by20.6%. Production in Japan declined by5.3% to 3.2 Mt. By comparison, Korea(+5.3%) and India (+7.0%) increasedtheir production of stainless during theyear.

China has remained the driving force instainless steel production with growth of11.9% in 2011. The country produced

12.6 Mt of stainless during the year.Including China, Asian production nowaccounts for 66.5% of all the stainlesssteel produced in the world.

Stainless steel production in theWestern Europe/Africa region largelystagnated during 2011 with volume ofjust under 7.9 Mt. Growth rates ofindividual countries in the region rangedfrom -5% to +18%. In the Central andEastern Europe region, production roseby 14.1% to 0.4 Mt, although volume isalmost negligible in a global context.In the Americas, stainless productionrose to 2.5 Mt, an increase of 4.7%compared to 2010.

Outokumpu gets the first CARES certificate for stainless rebarOutokumpu has become the first stainlessreinforcing steel producer to be granted byCARES (Certification Authority forReinforcing Steels) a certificate forSustainable Reinforcing Steel. The awardwas given to Outokumpu’s production unitin Sheffield, UK in February 2012.

Stainless steel has excellent propertiesenabling more sustainable solutions forthe built environment. Green buildingsystems are becoming more common andthese schemes evolve towards morestringent requirements. Furthermore,customers and designers are increasinglyasking for material and suppliers’sustainability credentials.

At the outset let me convey my goodwishes for publishing Stainless Indiaand sending it to engineers andarchitects throughout the country. It hasbecome a window to the rest of us toappreciate the beauty of this materialand the immense opportunity it presentsto architects and engineers in theirprojects.

While Stainless India as the namesuggests is primarily a magazinedevoted the development of stainlesssteel in India which unfortunately is notmuch, the content, in my view, is limitedto smaller structures as large structuresare seldom done in stainless steel inIndia due to the cost factor. However,this mindset can be changed providedone is exposed to more and moreexamples of unique structures and theiradvantages brought from other parts ofthe world and included in your magazine.It may somewhat increase the cost ofthe magazine but will help in promotingthe use of stainless steel in India.

Further, it is not clear that how manymanufacturers are actually producingstructural sections such as beams,tubes, channels, etc. which can beused in greater quantity provided theirproperties are made available to theengineers preferably in hard copyformat. Once stainless steel is viewedas a competitor of Mild Steel, I am surethere will be considerable increase inbusiness. In today’s India cost is notsuch a big issue but the lack ofknowledge and the lack of availabilityare a problem. Although you conductregular workshops, but these are notas effective as having a handbook andexamples to indicate what all has beenachieved in stainless steel in recenttime.

Finally, I feel that replacing the hardcopy version of Stainless India bysoft copy will somewhat diminishpeople’s interest in the material.
