That donation alone will help provide enough supplies for one school year for about 90 teachers. Teachers in Broward’s poorest schools are eligible to shop twice a year at the center for a wide range of items, from pencils, paper and glue to art supplies, tissues and back packs. “We were so pleased with the outpouring of support we received this year from our sponsors, local organizations and businesses and generous individuals,” Broward Education Foundation Board Chair Joe Cobo told the crowd gathered at the center for the “Big Reveal.” City of Pompano Beach Mayor Lamar Fisher, who was introduced by the Greater Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce President Ric Green, added his congratulations and expressed his pride in having the center located in his city. “We are proud to have this beautiful and important center in our city and congratulate the Broward Education Foundation for all that you do to support our teachers and students in Broward County,” he said. Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie recognized the top Stuff the Bus sponsors and ushered all attendees outdoors where everyone shouted, “Move that bus,” to reveal dozens of boxes stuffed with brand new school supplies hidden behind a school bus. “Many of the students in our district can’t afford to purchase the supplies they need, often shifting that burden to caring teachers who reach into their own pockets,” said Runcie. “Thanks to the Broward Education Foundation’s Tools for Schools Broward, that responsibility is lifted for many teachers.” More than 50 local businesses displayed contribution bins in their offices for the month of July to collect school supplies. Major sponsors included Waste Management, who donated the collection bins and underwrote the Big Reveal event; AutoNation Academy of Art and Design/Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale Nova Southeastern University, whose students provided original artwork for the collection bins; McDonald’s franchisee Rio Vista Management, who hosted a special event to collect donations; Power 96; The Pride Center, Women in Network and Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce Gay & Lesbian Business Exchange, who organized the largest collection drive of all Stuff the Bus partners; and the Greater Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce, who helps to keep donations flowing to the center all year through their annual holiday drive for school supplies. 17th Annual Scholarship Celebration Raises $720,000

Cuban Immigrant Receives Bill Elliott Memorial Scholarship

Chairman and CEO Letter

Alberto Alvarez arrived in South Florida 10 years ago with his older brother and parents, who fled Cuba. He recently met for the first time the Broward Education Foundation donor who is helping him realize his dream to become an Emergency Medical Technician and Fire Fighter. The scholarship will help him complete his training at McFatter Technical Center in Davie. Mary Beth Williams, a special education teacher at Deerfield Beach Elementary School, established a scholarship fund earlier this year in memory of her brother, Bill Elliott, a beloved Pompano Beach fire fighter who was tragically killed in a training exercise. Alberto is just one of nearly 180 deserving Broward high school graduates who received scholarships from the Broward Education Foundation at a recent scholarship awards ceremony, where many of the students were able to meet their donors in person. Broward Education Foundation raised $720,000 in 2012 to fund scholarships for college-bound graduates with unmet financial need. During the past 27 years, more than 4,040 graduates have received more than $9.4 million in scholarships.

It’s back to school at the Broward County school district and the Foundation is pleased to be part of supporting our teachers and students as they enter a new year.

On August 30 we held our “Stuff the Bus” campaign reveal. Before donors and friends we were pleased to reveal that over $35,000 in school supplies was donated to the Foundation’s Tools for Schools Broward center. Over 50 businesses and community organizations participated in the campaign this year, with lead sponsors including Waste Management, McDonald’s and the Pride Center. The news got even better when, post event, more supplies came in putting our total over $47,000 in collected supplies for this year, a 300% increase over last year’s campaign.

In September our Board of Directors held their annual meeting, electing David Marcus as our new Board Chair. Dave is the Area President for Arthur J. Gallagher Risk Management Services, Inc., and has been an invaluable Board member for the past 11 years. Also elected were Maureen Wilt as Chair Elect, Christina Fischer as Treasurer and Sue Gordon as Secretary. Outgoing Chair, Joseph Cobo, was recognized for his two-year term and thanked for his outstanding leadership.

The Foundation’s Education First Campaign is underway. The “Get on the Bus” themed campaign raises funds through payroll deduction among school district employees. We thank the 4,000+ donors who contribute annually to support the Foundation’s teacher grants program, school supplies and student scholarships!

Looking ahead, we are planning for our annual Teacher EXPO, to be held at Nova Southeastern University on February 2, 2013. This annual day of learning attracts over 500 attendees and features teachers sharing their innovative curriculum projects and more.

We look forward to helping our teachers and students achieve success during 2012-2013!

Sincerely,

The ballroom at Hyatt Regency Pier 66 was packed to capacity with more than 500 people, many dressed in hats and outfits in keeping with the “Havana Nights” theme, at the recent Broward Education Foundation Scholarship Celebration. The event raised more than $700,000 for college scholarships for graduating seniors with unmet financial need.

Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie and his wife, Diana, served as honorary co-chairs, with Lori Vajda and Kelly Vitale serving as co-chairs. Grammy-award-winning salsa singer, Willy Chirino, was honored by the Foundation for his contributions to Cuban-American culture.

Among the approximately 75 sponsors for the event were BrightStar Credit Union, Community Blood Centers of Florida, Coventry Health Care of Florida, SunSentinel Children’s Fund, Gallagher Benefit Services, Broward Teachers Union, Pearson, BECON, The City of Pompano Beach, Community Foundation of Broward and School Board of Broward County Employees.

BEF established the scholarship fund to provide scholarship dollars to graduating seniors with financial need. The scholarships are named in honor of the Broward Advisors for Continuing Education (BRACE), which provides resource information and technical advice/assistance on continuing education to students attending Broward County public high schools, technical centers and adult community schools. The Foundation raises funds for the scholarships, which are awarded to deserving students who have exhausted other avenues of support and might not otherwise be able to pursue post-secondary education.

As part of an effort to curb teen driving accidents, especially those related to texting and driving, the insurance firm State Farm® has donated $5,000 to the Broward Education Foundation to support innovative safe driver education teacher grants in Broward County high schools.

“Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for

teens. State Farm® is committed to helping end these tragedies. State Farm® is proud to be able to support Broward Schools’ efforts to promote safe driving among its students,” said Jose Soto, for State Farm®.

“Support from companies like State Farm® enables the Broward Education Foundation to help fill in budget gaps at our schools throughout the county,” said BEF President and CEO Jorene Jameson. “We salute their desire to be such an invaluable corporate citizen and help keep our new drivers safe.”

Broward County Public School’s driver’s education program reaches 9,000 students annually through sites at 15 high schools. The classes include road practice, as well as the ability to earn both driver’s permits and licenses. In addition, the school system hosts webcasts, presentations and assemblies to spread the safe driving message to all students.
