ancient Egypt A culture that existed on what is modern-day Egypt and surrounding areas. It lastedfrom around 3000 to 332 BC and is known for building elaborate tombs such as thepyramids.

Great Pyramidof Giza

The largest pyramid structure built in ancient Egypt. It was built in 2550 BC andconsists of one main pyramid, two smaller pyramids, and a surrounding series ofbuildings.

Minoancivilization

A culture that existed on the island of Crete in modern-day Greece. It lasted fromaround 2700 to 1450 BC and is known for having created "art for art's sake."

fresco A painting created by applying water-based color pigments directly to wet plaster on awall or ceiling.

fetish In art, an object that is believed to have supernatural or godlike powers.

ancient Greece A period of Greek history that lasted from 1100 to 146 BC and had a strong influenceon other cultures of the time. It is often considered the foundation of modern Westerncivilization and is characterized by a focus on math, science, and the arts.

Archaic Pertaining to the arts in Greece from circa 800 to 500 BC. The period ischaracterized by a focus on the human figure and motion.

Classical Pertaining to the arts in Greece circa 500 to 300 BC. The period is characterized by afocus on sculpture and the natural world. Also historically used to refer to the generalGreco-Roman influence on later artists and movements.

Hellenistic Pertaining to the arts in Greece from circa 300 to 1 BC. The period is characterizedby attention to detail, dramatic movement, and representation of emotion.

Black-figuretechnique

In ancient Greece, a style of pottery painting used from the 7th to 5th centuries BC inwhich figures were lightly engraved and painted on clay and then fired under highheat, turning the figures black and the clay red.

Red-figuretechnique

In ancient Greece, a style of pottery painting used from the 5th to 3rd centuries BC inwhich figures were painted on clay and fired on high, medium, and finally low heat,turning the clay black and the figures red.

Exekias (ca. 550 - 525 BC) The most famous of the ancient Greek black-figure potterypainters from the Archaic period. He is known for his attention to detail.

Major work: Dionysus Cup, ca. 535 BC.

frieze A scene that has been partially carved from stone, created using plaster, or paintedon the tops of walls on the inside or outside of buildings.

relief In art, a method of sculpting in which an image is only partially carved into a stone orother medium.

Phidias (ca. 480 - 430 BC) An ancient Greek sculptor and architect of the Classical periodmost known for his large friezes.

Major works: Statue of Zeus at Olympia; Athena Parthenos.

Euphronios (ca. 535 - 470 BC) Ancient Greek painter and potter of the Classical period; mostfamous artist of the red-figure technique.

Major work: Sarpedon Krater, ca. 515 BC.

foreshortening In art, the illusion that objects, figures, or distances are shorter than they are, createdby angling these forms toward the viewer.

panel painting A style of painting started by the ancient Greeks in which small wooden boards werepainted with tempera, though later panel paintings were created using oil paint.

tempera Color pigments traditionally mixed with egg yolks and water to be used as paint.

ancient Rome A period from 753 BC to AD 1453 in which Rome controlled Egypt, SouthwesternEurope, and Asia Minor at the height of its power. This empire contributed greatly tolaw, politics, philosophy, technology, language, and art. Also known as the Roman

mosaic The art of arranging small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other material to createan artwork.

Byzantine style The art and architecture created during, or inspired by, the Eastern Roman Empire.The style is characterized by Greek, Roman, and Christian influences; it isconsidered the first style to feature abstract art.

medieval Related to the Middle Ages, which lasted from approximately the 5th to 16thcenturies AD.

Greco-Roman A term used to refer to the combined influences of ancient Greece and ancientRome, usually on art and architecture.

illuminatedmanuscript

A popular book style from the Middle Ages in which detailed drawings accompanythe words. It was primarily used to communicate Christian teachings.

symbolism The practice of using an object to represent something else, usually somethinginvisible like an ideal or emotion.

Book of Kells A book created in 9th-century Ireland that combines Christian teachings with localculture. It is the most famous existing example of an illustrated manuscript.

iconoclasts People who believe imagery interferes with religious worship and therefore advocatethe destruction of religious images.

InternationalGothic style

Robert Campin (ca. 1375 – 1444) An International Gothic style artist believed to be the Master ofFlémalle. He is considered the first artist to use oil paint and is known for his early useof linear perspective and his focus on realistic detail.

Major work: Mérode Altarpiece, ca. 1425.

triptych A painting done on three side-by-side parts or panels. It is traditionally hinged to foldopen from the center panel to create altarpieces.

MérodeAltarpiece

A triptych painted by Robert Campin circa 1425. It is most famous for its extensivedomestic details, many of which are symbolic. It is one of the earliest examples of oilpainting.

oil paint Paint created by mixing color pigments with a type of oil, usually linseed. It ischaracterized by being easy to mix and slow to dry.
