STUDY RULES

OF THE SECOND CYCLE OF STUDIES CONDUCTED IN ACCORDACE TO THE

BOLOGNA PROCESS – MASTER STUDY (fourth and fifth year of study)

I. GENERAL PROVISIONS

Article 1

These Rules closely regulate organization of the second cycle of studies/Master’s studies

lasting for two years conducted in accordance to the Bologna Process at the University “VITEZ”

Travnik (hereinafter: the University).

Article 2

These Rules determine organization and conduction of the second cycle of studies leading to

a Master’s degree, as well as other issues related to organization and conduction of studies,

duration of studies, procedure of examination and evaluation, conditions and procedures for a

Master’s thesis, study documentation and other relevant issues important for the second cycle of

studies conducted at the University.

II. LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE SECOND CYCLE STUDIES

Article 3

The second cycle of studies organized within the University is efficient, individual and

credible, designed to meet the needs of all Masters’ candidates. The second cycle of studies is

realized through the system of individual mentoring, instructions, consultative teaching and

exercises.

The main objectives of the study are building on deep specialist knowledge related to the

narrow field of the candidate’s thesis and acquisition of knowledge necessary for the use of

scientific methods and research techniques in a specific field, thus enabling a candidate for

creative resolving of complex practical problems and continuation of scientific research.

III. ORGANIZATION OF THE SECOND CYCLE OF STUDIES

Article 4

Through its faculties, the University organizes and performs the second cycle of studies in

the scientific fields for which it is accredited.

Article 5

The second cycle of studies is organized and realized for academic study programmes

awarding the Master’s degree.

Article 6

In the second cycle of studies, candidates shall acquire knowledge related to scientific

research.

Article 7

The study programmes of the second cycle of studies are realized through academic years

(fourth and fifth year of study) and semesters (VII, VIII, IX and X).

According to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), candidates

acquire 60 ECTS credits in one academic year or 30 ECTS credits in one semester during the

second cycle of studies. The numbers of credits allocated for each subject are predetermined on

the basis of the student’s total workload (theoretical or practical teaching, exercises, seminars,

etc.), the time invested in solving independent tasks (homework, projects, seminar papers, etc.)

and in successful preparation for the assessment and grading (written examinations, final

examinations, etc.). The number of credits allocated for each subject ranges from 5 to 8 ECTS

points.

Upon successful completions of their Master’s thesis, students are awarded 25 ECTS credits,

distributed as follows:

- written elaboration- 20 ECTS credits;

- defence of Master’s thesis- 5 ECTS credits

TOTAL: 25 ECTS credits

Article 8

The second cycle of studies for obtaining the Master’s degree is organized upon completion

of the first cycle of studies where students are awarded 300 ECTS credits in total according to

the following distribution:

- the first cycle (first to third year of study) 180 ECTS credits and

- the second cycle (fourth and fifth year of study) 120 ECTS credits

TOTAL: 300 ECTS credits

In cases where students have completed the first cycle of studies lasting four years, the

second cycle of studies lasts one year and students are awarded 300 ECTS credits in total

according to the following distribution:

- the first cycle (first to fourth year of study) 240 ECTS credits and

- the second cycle (fifth year of study) 60 ECTS credits.

TOTAL: 300 ECTS credits

The second cycle of studies may be organized as full-time studies, part-time studies and

distance learning studies.

Article 9

Students who have passed all examinations required by the second cycle study programme,

defended their theses and fulfilled all other obligations prescribed by the Statute of the

University and these Rules are awarded with an appropriate degree or diploma on completion of

the second cycle of studies.

In addition, the Diploma Supplement providing detailed description of the nature, level,

content, system and rules of studies along with the results achieved in the second cycle of studies

is issued to graduates.

The Diploma is confirmed by awarding the Master’s degree with an indication of the

professional field in accordance with Paragraphs of the Regulations on Award of Academic

Degrees and Diplomas of the University “VITEZ”.

IV. STRUCTURE OF STUDY PROGRAMMES

Article 10

The second cycle study programmes contain general and specific conditions which students

ought to meet in order to gain a degree and these are as follows:

1. subjects (courses) distributed within semesters and academic years and their division into

compulsory subjects (scientific basis, basic and vocational subjects), elective vocational

subjects and free elective subjects;

2. student’s workload per one subject;

3. number of ECTS credits per one subject defined by the curriculum;

4. other activities designed for acquiring and improving professional knowledge and skills

(seminar papers, practical work, etc.);

5. mandatory requirements for attending lectures and passing examinations in a particular

subject;

6. Master’s thesis with the number of ECTS credits and planned dates for beginning and

ending of the Master’s thesis;

7. student’s total workload for gaining one ECTS credit equals 30 working hours.

Article 11

The second cycle of studies may be organized as a logical sequence of the first cycle of

studies as follows:

1. Faculty of Business Economics

Study programme: Entrepreneurial Management

Study programme: Finance, Banking and Insurance Management

Study programme: Public Sector Management and Administration

Study programme: Marketing and Trade Management

Study programme: Tourism and Hospitality Management

Study programme: Accounting and Auditing Management

2. Faculty of Law

Study programme: General Law

3. Faculty of Business Informatics

Study programme: Business Informatics

Study programme: Informatics- Teacher Training

4. Faculty of Health Care

V. CURRICULUM

Article 12

The curriculum of the second cycle of studies is brought by the University or its

members/faculties in accordance with the previous Article.

Article 13

The curriculum determines the schedule of the subject units (subjects and other teaching

formats) during semesters or one study year with corresponding study dynamics and subject

structure defined by the type, subject area (wider and narrower scientific area), level of

complexity/abstraction and subject compulsoriness.

Article 14

Subjects are organized during one semester.

In addition to full-time studies and in cases where a small number of candidates is involved,

consultative and instructive studies may be organized.

Consultative studies are carried out within six consultation hours where a subject teacher

organizes two meetings in order to provide the closer insight into the structure of a subject and to

point out specifications regarding the examination questions and knowledge required. In

addition, students are presented with their other obligations that form an integral part of the

evaluation of knowledge in the subject involved.

Students independently carry out their preparations for examinations to be taken. Students

have at their disposal all information and communicative means and technologies used in

distance learning studies as well as instructions given by a teacher.

Instructive studies are carried out within 12 hours where a teacher organizes three meetings

in order to provide students with the closer insight into all planned teaching activities.

Students carry out their preparations for examinations to be taken in interaction with their

colleagues and teaching personnel where the focus is placed upon the students’ independent

work.

Instructive studies are organized for subjects attending fewer than 20 students. Consultative

studies are organized for subjects attending fewer than 10 students.

The University “VITEZ” Travnik is under no obligation to organize full-time studies for

subjects attending fewer than 5 students.

Article 15

The syllabus of compulsory and elective subjects taught within the second cycle of studies is

brought by the University Senate base on the proposal made by the University Rector.

VI. EXAMINATION AND EVALUATION

Article 16

Evaluation of students is carried out by awarding points for different activities within a

particular subject.

Article 17

A final grade is formed on the basis of the points accumulated during lectures and

examinations taken. The distribution of points is carried out in the following way:

1. Seminar paper- 40 points

2. Interaction- 20 points

3. Seminar presentation and defence- 10 points

4. Oral examination-30 points

TOTAL: 100 points

a) Seminar papers are written and defended for each individual subject taught. Students

write seminar papers on the topics agreed upon in the meeting with their subject teacher.

Seminar papers are written in accordance to the Methodology and Technical Design of

Scientific Papers and Instructions on Writing Seminar Papers available at the University

web site. The subject teacher awards 0 to 40 points for the quality of seminar papers. The

subject teacher may return seminar papers for additional repairs and refinements.

b) Interaction is awarded with 0 to 20 points. Students are divided into groups, each group

consisting of 3-5 members. Students exchange seminar papers and presentations among

themselves. During the defence of seminar papers, all students in one group are expected

to give their remarks, suggestions and critics on the papers of other members. Based on

their remarks and responses, students are graded for their interaction and knowledge

regarding the topics presented by other students.

c) Seminar presentation and defence is awarded with 0 to 10 points. Seminar presentation

lasts for a maximum of 10 minutes. After the presentation, other members of the group

give their remarks, suggestions and critics. The subject teacher may ask additional

questions and is obligated to stimulate students’ interaction which is graded as stated in

the previous Section. The duration of seminar defence and discussion is not limited. It is

recommended that the discussion takes 30 minutes per one seminar paper.

d) Oral examination is carried out on the same day, after the presentation and defence of

seminar papers. In this way all activities concerning a particular subject are carried out

publicly and transparently in front of all students and groups attending the examination.

Oral examinations are awarded with 0 to 30 points depending on the student’s acquired

knowledge regarding theoretical and practical aspects of the subject taught. Oral

examinations are conducted in the form of free and professional discussions on different

topics in the field of the subject taught.

e) Subjects are elaborated during the period of nine weeks, while examinations are

organized as follows:

- First examination period- during the fourth week after the last lecture,

- Second examination period- during the ninth week after the last lecture,

- Additional examination period- during September.

Students ought to meet all obligations defined by the study programme and syllabus of a

particular subject in order to sit for examinations.

Article 18

Students independently and on their own initiative accumulate points. Students who are not

satisfied with the accumulated points may take a make-up examination.

The registration for make-up examinations must be submitted in written form to subject

teachers or teaching assistants within eight days after the result reports are made public. Students

may take make-up examinations in all forms in order to accumulate points referred to in the

previous Article. By taking make-up examinations, all previously accumulated points are

considered as invalid and students are awarded with newly accumulated points.

Students are entitled to three cycles of make-up examinations. Provided that students fail to

pass the examination three times in a row, the examination is then taken before the Commission.

Article 19

Students’ evaluation is carried out in accordance with the accumulated points as follows:

Upon the completion of examinations, a subject teacher is obliged to:

1. enter the grade and the number of ECTS points acquired into the student record

booklet/index;

2. fill in Record on taking examinations (points and grade);

3. submit a copy of the seminar paper in written form.

Article 20

All examinations are made public. Examinations may be taken only in the official premises

of the University, i.e. in the objects listed in the work permit.

Metric characteristics of written examinations (accuracy, validity, and objectivity), credibility of

oral examinations and assessment methodology are subject to periodical evaluations conducted

by an independent body and in accordance with the Regulations on Quality Assurance of the

University.

Article 21

During September of the current academic year make-up examinations are organized for all

subjects of one study group taught during one academic year. These terms are intended for taking

examinations which are a prerequisite to enter the next academic year.

Additional terms for all remaining examinations from the previous academic year may be

organized in agreement with subject teachers.

All examinations must be taken within one year from the date of the final lecture held in a

particular subject.

Article 22

A Master’s thesis is an independent work where students elaborate their chosen topics by

applying scientific methods and demonstrate their knowledge and skills acquired during the

education process.

In addition to the requirements referred to in Paragraph 1 of this Article, students ought to

demonstrate their abilities in using scientific research methods while elaborating their topics and

reporting research findings, as well as their abilities for drawing conclusions based on the

research findings.

The findings reported in the paper ought to represent a contribution to:

systematization of scientific and professional problems and existing solutions within

a specific field;

solution of actual scientific or professional problems set as the goal of the thesis;

application of the existing scientific or professional achievements in the process of

solving complex professional problems.

Article 23

Students are obliged to submit their application for the Master’s thesis topic by the end of

the ninth semester.

During the 10th semester, students ought to take only one examination and devote their

time to elaboration of their Master’s thesis awarded with 20 ECTS points upon completion.

At the end of the 10th semester a Master’s thesis is defended awarding students with 5

ECTS credits.

Article 24

Students ought to decide upon their Master’s thesis topic till the end of the 10th semester.

The Master’s thesis topic must relate to the study programme of the second cycle of studies.

Students decide upon the field to be addressed in their Master’s thesis in agreement with

their teachers.

A teacher proposes the topic of a research paper. The topic proposed by students may be

accepted provided that the topic meets necessary criteria.

Article 25

Students submit the Application of the Master’s Thesis Topic in written form to the

Teaching Scientific Council.

The application should contain:

candidate’s biography;

topic and working hypotheses of a research paper;

title and working structure;

a short review of chapter contents;

topic explanation;

methodological notes;

literature list.

A Master’s thesis topic must precisely and clearly express the content of a Master’s thesis.

Article 26

Methodological notes contain:

research problem;

research goals and subject;

research subject;

research methods.

Article 27

Based on the Application submitted, the Teaching Scientific Council of the Faculty appoints

a mentor and the Commissions for Evaluation and Defence of Master’s Thesis as follows:

the Commission for Evaluation of the Candidate’s Eligibility and Acceptability of the

Master’s Thesis Topic;

the Commission for Assessment of Master’s Thesis;

the Commission for Master’s Thesis Defence.

The Commission referred to in Paragraph 1 of this Article consists of a chairperson and two

other members. One of the Commission members is a mentor, who may not be the chairperson of

the Commission.

The Commission submits a report to the Teaching and Scientific Council of the Faculty

within 15 days of their appointment. The Teaching and Scientific Council shall consider and

adopt the report of the Commission and approve the topic for the elaboration of Master’s thesis.

Before considering the report submitted by the Commission, the Teaching and Scientific

Council considers and gives its opinion to the department which a Master’s thesis topic relates

to.

All decisions taken by the Teaching and Scientific Council are approved by the University

Senate.

Article 28

A Master’s thesis is under guidance of a mentor (full-time professor, associate professor or

professor emeritus) associated with the chosen field of students’ specialization.

A mentor advises candidates on their theoretical and research work and provides assistance

during the whole process of a Master’s thesis elaboration through:

topic choice;

title formulation;

defining hypotheses;

setting the objectives, scientific research methods and solutions;

defining the problem within the theory;

stating definitions, evaluation criteria and structure;

choice of research, data processing and analysis and verification of research methods;

final design of a Master’s thesis.

The University Senate shall discuss and decide on candidates’ appeals and complaints, as

well as on their requirements for changing Thesis mentors.

Article 29

Upon completion of their Master’s thesis, students submit the Request for Master’s Thesis

Evaluation in written form to the Teaching Scientific Council of the Faculty.

The Request contains the following:

- registration for Master’s thesis;

- Mentor’s Approval stating that a thesis meets the criteria specified by the topic

explanation;

- four soft cover copies of a Master’s thesis and one copy in electronic form;

- a certificate of the student’s passed subjects and ECTS credits issued by the official

faculty record.

Article 30

A Master’s thesis must be linguistically, stylistically and technically designed in accordance

with modern methods, techniques and technologies of publication in the scientific research field.

The Rules on Technical Design and Processing of Master’s Thesis are brought by the

University Senate.

The methodology of processing, procedure and sequence of activities are stated in the

Registration and Defence of Master’s Thesis as defined within these Rules.

Article 31

A Master’s thesis is submitted to the Commission for Master’s Thesis Evaluation

(chairperson, mentor and additional member).

One copy of a Master’s thesis is accessible in the library of the University.

Notification that a Master’s thesis is accessible in the library is announced at the bulletin

board of the Faculty and on the University web site.

Comments and remarks on a Master’s thesis may be delivered to the Faculty within 15 days

from the day of announcing the notification referred to in Paragraph 3 of this Article.

Article 32

The Commission for Master’s Thesis Evaluation is obliged to submit the Report on Master’s

Thesis along with their opinions and conclusions to the Teaching Scientific Council of the

Faculty within 20 days from the day of the receipt of a Master’s thesis for evaluation.

The Teaching Scientific Council of the Faculty decides on the Report of the Commission for

Master’s Thesis Evaluation and declares the thesis accepted or rejected within 30 days from the

day of the report submission.

The decision of the Teaching Scientific Council is approved by the University Senate.

Article 33

Provided that the Commission for Master’s Thesis Evaluation and the Teaching Scientific

Council of the Faculty rejects a Master’s thesis, a candidate may revise his/her thesis in

accordance with the remarks given or submit a new Application for Master’s Thesis Topic within

30 days from the day of receiving the decision on rejection of his/her Master’s thesis.

The period referred to in Paragraph 1 of this Article does not include the period of an annual

leave and holidays at the University.

Article 34

In order to submit a Master’s thesis, a candidate must pass all examinations and meet all

other obligations defined by the curriculum.

The deadline for the submission of a Master’s thesis may be extended at the request of the

candidate provided that justifiable reasons for deletion are found.

A Master’s thesis must be registered and defended within the period of 2 years from the day

of the last lecture held.

Article 35

The Master’s thesis defence may be organized after the period of 30 days from the day of

the decision of the Teaching Scientific Council on the Report of the Commission for Master’s

Thesis Evaluation by which a Master’s thesis is accepted in accordance with the University

Senate.

The Decision on the Master’s thesis defence is delivered to a candidate and published on the

bulletin board of the Faculty.

Article 36

The procedure of the Master’s thesis defence before the Commission for Master’s Thesis

Defence is as follows:

1. the Chairperson of the Commission acknowledges data and information about a

candidate and makes a short review of the thesis;

2. a candidate makes a short summary of his/her Master’s thesis presenting the findings and

conclusions reached;

3. the members of the Commission ask questions.

After the procedure, the Commission for Master’s Thesis Defence issues a decision whether

a candidate has successfully defended a thesis.

Article 37

A Master’s thesis is made available to the public and may be published after the defence.

The Master’s Thesis Defence is a public presentation of the candidate’s thesis.

Article 38

Upon approval of a new Master’s thesis topic, the Teaching Scientific Council of the Faculty

defines the deadline for the Master’s thesis to be submitted.

Article 39

Candidates who have defended their Master’s thesis are registered in the Book of the Masters

of Science managed by the University.

Article 40

Candidates submit 10 hard cover copies of their Master’s thesis and one copy in electronic

form.

Candidates are issued the Confirmation where the date of receipt of their Master’s thesis is

registered.

Article 41

The University Senate defines the date of the promotion ceremony where the candidates who

have successfully passed all examinations, fulfilled all other obligations defined within these

Rules and defended their Master’s thesis are awarded with diplomas on completion of the second

cycle of studies and with an academic degree in a specific field in accordance with the second

cycle of studies.

Until the official awarding of diplomas, candidates shall be issued the Certificate on

completion of the second cycle of studies.

Article 42

The Faculty is obliged to deliver one copy of a Master’s thesis to the Faculty archive, as well

as to the Professional Services of the Rector’s Office.

VIII. ADMISSION TO THE SECOND CYCLE OF STUDIES

Article 43

Students who have completed the first cycle of studies, gained the Undergraduate

diploma and accumulated a minimum of 180 ECTS credits have the right of admission to the

second cycle of studies.

Students who have completed the first cycle of studies lasting for four years and

accumulated 240 ECTS credits have the right of admission to the fifth year of studies, i.e. the

fourth year of their undergraduate studies is treated as the first year of the graduated studies.

1. Students who gained the Undergraduate Diploma at the Faculty of Business Economics

may enrol in the second cycle of studies at the Faculty of Business Economics.

Apart from students referred to in the previous Paragraph, the right of enrolment in the

second cycle of studies at the Faculty of Business Economics is granted to all students

who have completed three or four years of studies at the faculties of different directions.

The Commission for Examination Recognition appointed by the Faculty Dean on the

proposal of the Teaching Scientific Council decides on examinations considered as

differences between the curriculum of other faculties and of the Faculty of Business

Economics that students are required to pass.

Students who have completed four years of studies at the faculties of different directions

may enrol in the first year of the second cycle of studies where the fourth year is not

recognized as the first year of the second cycle of studies at the Faculty of Business

Economics.

The Decision on Examination Recognition is taken by the Dean based on the proposal of

the Commission. Students are required to pass all examinations considered as differences

till the end of the first semester.

Students who obtained a business school degree upon completion of three years of

studies may enrol in the fourth year of the second cycle of studies at the Faculty of

Business Economics. Students are required to pass all examinations considered as

differences by the Commission for Examination Recognition appointed by the Faculty

Dean on the proposal of the Teaching Scientific Council.

Students are required to pass all examinations considered as differences till the end of

the first semester.

2. Students who gained the Undergraduate Diploma at the Faculty of Law may enrol in the

second cycle of studies at the Faculty of Law.

Apart from students referred to in the previous Paragraph, the right of enrolment in the

second cycle of studies at the Faculty of Law is granted to all students who have

completed undergraduate studies at the following faculties:

the Faculty of Criminology, Justice and Policy Studies;

faculties related to Administration and Legal Guidance.

Students referred to in the previous Paragraph may enrol in the second cycle of studies

and are required to pass all examinations considered as differences by the Commission

for Examination Recognition appointed by the Faculty Dean on the proposal of the

Teaching Scientific Council. The Faculty Dean on the proposal of the Teaching

Scientific Council takes the Decision on Examinations Differences between the

curriculum of other faculties and of the Faculty of Law. Students are required to pass all

examinations considered as differences till the end of the first semester.

The fourth year of the first cycle of studies is not recognized as the first year of the

second cycle of studies at the Faculty of Law in cases when students have completed

four years of studies at the Faculty of Criminology, Justice and Policy Studies or other

faculties related to Administration and Legal Guidance.

3. Students who gained the Undergraduate Diploma at the Faculty of Business Informatics

may enrol in the second cycle of studies at the Faculty of Business Informatics.

Students who gained the Undergraduate Diploma at the Faculty of Health Care may

enrol in the second cycle of studies at the Faculty of Health Care.

4. Students enrolling in the fifth year of studies or the second year of the second cycle of

studies are obliged to take the examination “The Methodology of Scientific Research”.

Article 44

The University announces the Application for Admission in the second cycle study

programmes within the faculties.

Based on the Rector’s proposal, the University Senate shall determine the number of students

to be enrolled in the study programmes organized by the University.

The University Senate is responsible for teacher selection and recruitment and specification

of all obligations regarding the teaching process of the second cycle of studies.

The Application for Admission shall be announced on the University web site and in the

daily newspaper published in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

IX. ENROLMENT IN THE NEXT YEAR OF STUDIES

Article 45

Students may enrol in the next year of study provided that all obligations concerning a

particular study programme are fulfilled and all subjects/courses carrying ECTS credits

necessary for the enrolment in the next year of study are passed.

Students who fail to meet all requirements stated in Paragraph 1 of this Article may enrol in

the next year of study by accumulating no less than 45 ECTS credits.

Article 46

Students who fail to fulfil any of the requirements stated in the previous Article are obliged

to re-enrol in the current year of study and to pay tuition fees.

Article 47

Upon the student’s request, the University may put to rest all student’s rights and obligations

over a certain time period provided that justifiable reasons are found.

A student is considered to have withdrawn from a higher education institution in cases when

student’s rights and obligations are not put to rest in accordance to the previous Paragraph, or

when the enrolment in the next study year or the current study year is not carried out.

Article 48

In cases of modifications to the programmes of study, students who re-enrol in the same

study year or after an interruption of their studies are obliged to follow a new study programme

and to pass all examinations considered as differences between the two programmes.

Students studying in continuum without re-enrolment of a study year have the right to

complete the study programme taken.

IX. STUDY COSTS-TUITION FEES

Article 49

Admission to the second cycle of studies is conditioned with the payment of tuition fees

that are defined within the Rules on Tuition Fees passed by the University Managing Board.

Article 50

Students may pay tuition fees and/or other services provided by the Faculty in the form of

instalments in accordance with the Rules on Tuition Fees.

Provided that tuition fees are paid in instalments, students are required to fulfil their payment

obligations in accordance with the dynamics defined within the Rules on Tuition Fees of the

University. The payment of the first instalment is a prerequisite for the enrolment in the first year

of studies. The payment of the second instalment is a prerequisite for the verification of the first

semester and continuation of studies during the second semester. The payment of the third

instalment is a prerequisite for the verification and finalization of the current academic year.

Students are required to meet all of their payment obligations from the previous year in order

to be enrolled in the next year of studies.

Article 51

In accordance with the Rules on Tuition Fees, the University entitles appropriate reductions

of tuition fees in the following cases: the family members of the employed studying at the

University; the family members of the Managing Board members studying at the University;

several members of one family studying at the University; talented students who have achieved

high scores during their previous education; other categories proposed by the University

Managing Board.

Article 52

Candidates conclude the Study Agreement with the University by which both sides are given

rights and responsibilities in the process of education and studying.

The amount of tuition fees and methods of payment are defined within the Study Agreement.

Article 53

Foreign students may enrol in the second cycle of studies under the same conditions as the

students from Bosnia and Herzegovina provided that their diploma from previously completed

cycle of studies is validated.

Foreign students have the status of students obliged to pay tuition fees.

X. TRANSITIONAL AND FINAL PROVISIONS

Article 54

These Rules apply to all study programmes of the second cycle of studies starting in the

2008/2009 academic year.

Article 55

These Rules enter into force on the day of promulgation. The Rector of the University issues

a special methodology for the Proceedings of Procedure and Order of Activities for the

Registration and Defence of the Master’s Thesis to ensure the implementation of these Rules.

for the Registration and Defence of the Master’s Thesis

The Rector of the University issues a special methodology applicable to the Proceeding

of Procedure and Sequence of Activities for the Registration and Defence of the Master’s Thesis.

A. PRIOR ACTIVITIES OF THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE MENTOR AND TOPIC

CHOSEN

1. The announcement of thesis topics as well as the announcement of potential mentors is

performed by candidates with the consent/signature of potential mentors (on the

prescribed form).

2. The Rector of the University and the Dean of the Faculty give their consent to the

announcement of thesis topics and potential mentors by signing the prescribed form.

B. ACTIVITIES RELATED TO THE REGISTRATION AND APPROVAL OF THE

TOPIC

1. Candidates submit the Application for the Master’s Thesis Topic with their own signature

to the Teaching Scientific Council.

2. Potential mentors are required to give their consent by signing the Application for the

Master’s Thesis Topic.

3. The Application for the Master’s Thesis Topic has its form and content as follows:

a) Curriculum Vitae;

b) topic and working hypotheses;

c) title and working structure;

d) a short review of chapter contents;

e) topic explanation;

f) methodological notes;

g) literature list.

4. The Teaching Scientific Council passes the Application for the Master’s Thesis Topic to

the responsible department.

5. The Department Council revises the Application for the Master’s Thesis Topic and gives

its opinion on:

a) the Application for the Master’s Thesis Topic, and

b) the Commission for Evaluation of the Candidate’s Eligibility and Acceptability

of the Master’s Thesis Topic. Potential mentors may be the commission

members, but may not perform the function of the Commission’s chairperson.

6. The Teaching Scientific Council considers:

a) the Application for the Master’s Thesis Topic

b) nomination of potential mentors

c) composition of the Commission for Evaluation of the Candidate’s Eligibility and

Acceptability of the Master’s Thesis Topic.

The Teaching Scientific Council takes into consideration opinions and remarks of the

Department Council. After consideration, the Teaching Scientific Council adopts,

rejects or suggests alternation of the materials listed above.

7. The Report on Evaluation of the Candidate’s Eligibility and Acceptability of the Master’s

Thesis Topic is passed to the Department Council by the Commission. The Department

Council gives its opinion and passes the Report to the Teaching Scientific Council for

adoption.

8. The Teaching Scientific Council submits for approval to the University Senate:

a) Application for the Master’s Thesis Topic

b) proposal of potential mentors

c) composition of the Commission for Evaluation of the Candidate’s Eligibility and

Acceptability of the Master’s Thesis Topic

d) The Commission’s Report on the Evaluation of the Candidate’s Eligibility and

Acceptability of the Master’s Thesis Topic.

The University Senate may approve or reject and return the proposals for additional

corrections.

C. ACTIVITIES RELATED TO MASTER’S THESIS UPON ITS COMPLETION,

SUBMITTION AND DEFENCE

1. Upon completion of their Master’s thesis, candidates submit four soft cover copies of

the Master’s thesis and one copy in electronic form along with the mentor’s approval

of the Master’s thesis.

2. The Department Council proposes the Commission for Assessment of Master’s

Thesis composed of three members to the Teaching Scientific Council. The thesis

mentor may be the member of the commission, but may not perform the function of

the commission chairperson. The commission may have the same composition as the

one referred to in Section 7b.

3. The Teaching Scientific Council appoints the Commission for Assessment of

Master’s Thesis on the proposal of the Department Council.

4. The University Senate agrees upon the appointment of the Commission for

Assessment of Master’s Thesis made by the Teaching Scientific Council.

5. The Commission for Assessment of Master’s Thesis submits the Report on Master’s

Thesis.

6. The Department Council revises and gives its opinion on the Report on Master’s

Thesis. The Report along with the opinion of the Department Council is further

delivered to the Teaching Scientific Council.

7. The Teaching Scientific Council revises the Report on Master’s Thesis and the

opinion of the Department Council and takes a decision on:

a) Approval or rejection and return of the Report for additional corrections

b) Appointment of the Commission for Master’s Thesis Defence that may have the

same composition as the one referred to in Section 12. The thesis mentor may not

perform the function of the commission chairperson.

c) The date of the Master’s Thesis Defence. The date may be set 30 days from the

day the University Senate agreed on the Master’s Thesis Defence.

8. Candidates submit 10 hard cover copies of their Master’s thesis and one copy in

electronic form.

9. The University Senate agrees with all the decisions made by the Teaching Scientific

Council stated in Section 17a, 17b and 17c.

10. Master’s Thesis is publicly defended before the Commission for Master’s Thesis

Defence.

11. Upon completion of the Master’s Thesis Defence, the Commission forms the Record

on the Master’s Thesis Defence with the statement of successful or not successful

defence of the Master’s Thesis. The Record is signed by all three member of the

Commission.

12. This Methodology is designed to comply with the Rules of the second cycle of

studies in accordance to the Bologna Process.

13. The University bodies participating in the methodology of the Master’s thesis

procedure are:

the relevant department of the Faculty,

the Teaching Scientific Council,

The University Senate.
