A New Study Option at The Scots College In Term 4 2017 The Scots College will accept its second intake of students into the Applied Entrepreneurship Program. In response to continuing demand, this College developed course of study specifically focuses on preparing students for careers in the rapidly changing world of business start-ups, small to medium enterprise (SME), and social enterprise.

The program is part of The Scots College Institute of Business and Economics and partners with industry leaders and experts to provide students with a unique opportunity to begin their entrepreneurial pathways with a distinct advantage — the Scots Advantage. Students will gain access to industry mentors, work on multi-disciplinary projects aimed at solving real world problems, and conclude the program with a capstone international internship.

The Applied Entrepreneurship Program (AEP) is not simply dreaming about the possibilities of being an entrepreneur. It involves testing the reality of the dream and constantly learning from experiences. Boys will not just learn about entrepreneurship; they will experience it as part of the program.

Why Study Entrepreneurship?Entrepreneurship is a key driver of the global economy. SMEs are responsible for 68 percent of employment in Australia. Much of this wealth creation is driven by entrepreneurially minded individuals, many of whom go on to create big businesses. People exposed to entrepreneurship frequently express that they have more opportunity to exercise creative freedoms, higher self-esteem, and an overall greater sense of control over their own lives. As a result, business leaders, academics, economists, and educators believe that fostering a robust entrepreneurial culture will maximise individual and collective economic and social success on a local, national, and global scale. This is why The Scots College is committed to offering boys a course of study that prepares them to succeed in an entrepreneurial economy.

A Flexible Pattern of StudyThe pattern of study can be tailored to individual interests and desired post-secondary pathway. The College will work with each student and family to articulate this course of study into a preferred university or vocational pathway.

*Six units of Board Developed Courses (BDC) are required for eligibility to receive the HSC.

Who Should Study the Applied Entrepreneurship Program?The Applied Entrepreneurship Program is ideally suited for boys who:

Why is the AEP Unique?The Scots College Applied Entrepreneurship Program has been designed to deliver a unique and sought after preparation for work (a future) in the entrepreneurial economy:

Why is Mentoring Important for Entrepreneurs?Entrepreneurs are not ‘born’ ... they ‘become’ through the experiences of their lives. Although there is no specific educational requirement to become an entrepreneur, it is helpful to have developed good support skills including communications, interpersonal abilities, economic understanding, digital skills, marketing, management, and finance skills.

Mentoring enables boys to experience the experience of others who have already lived life as an entrepreneur themselves. Studies have shown that mentorship by entrepreneurs yields a significantly higher likelihood of entrepreneurship after graduation. Standard career mentorship often has an element of guiding the mentee on how to get promoted and move up within organisations. In the Applied Entrepreneurship Program, entrepreneurial mentorship is geared towards helping boys create his or her own organisation, so personal development is emphasized to a greater degree.

Will my son graduate with a Higher School Certificate? Yes. Your son will receive his HSC upon completion of his Applied Entrepreneurship Program.

Will students be able to study at university without an ATAR? Yes, but the pathway is different. Nearly half of all university entrants do so without an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). Direct entry into university courses immediately after Year 12 is available to some courses that may have other entrance requirements. Please consult the College Career Counsellor for specific requirements.

What other opportunities will my son have? Graduates of the Applied Entrepreneurship Program will be given a range of work-ready opportunities, including connections to business owners in the Scots community, a capstone international business immersion experience in Asia, and specific skills for engagement in the workforce through the Work Studies and Business Services courses.

Will my son do exams? Yes and No. Boys can elect to sit an HSC exam for English Studies and/or Business Services. However, they will sit HSC exams for two courses: 2 Unit General Mathematics and their elected HSC course. For all other courses in the Applied Entrepreneurship Program boys engage in rigorous project-based work assessed internally by their teachers. There is no difference or added value to the qualifications received whether the optional English Studies and Business Services HSC examinations are sat, therefore most boys chose to not sit these HSC examinations.

How many boys will be taking the course? The course will be offered to a select group of students, working under a ‘cohort model’. Learning happens best in teams, so this model is ideally suited to help every boy remain engaged, challenged and supported.

Who will look after the boys’ pastoral welfare? Boys will remain in their House and tutor groups and engage in their regular Year 12 activities. In addition to these existing support structures, the Institute of Business and Economics staff will be in regular contact with boys and parents in keeping boys on track towards the completion of their studies.

Will there be any additional cost? No. All costs for this program (including flights and accommodation for the capstone experience) are part of regular Year 12 tuition fees.
