De long, COPD, Astma (Wesseling / 3okt)4. Bloed, bloeddruk, nieren (10 okt)5. Hoe informeer je je als patiënt? (17 okt)

(Ponds / 27 sept)2. Vastbinden? Over fixatievrije ouderenzorg (Hamers / 4 okt)3.

20.00 uurAula Minderbroeders-berg 4-6Prof. dr. A. Vandevelde, hoogleraar wijsbegeerte, KU Leuven

Talkshow Nieuwe inzichten in AlzheimerVr 21 september, 14.00 uurGroot Societeit, Vrijthof 36Met prof. dr.

Utrecht

Waardoor verouderen we?

Zie blz 30/31.

Debatcafé met SV Santé Het menselijk genoomDi 30 oktober, 20.00 uurBoekhandel Dominicanen De Slegte, Dominikaner-kerkstraat 1 Debat met o.a. prof. dr. B. Smeets, bijzonder hoogleraar genoomana-lyse, prof. dr.

Editorial

Paul de Blot, professor of Business Spirituality at Nyenrode Business Uni-versity, recently argued on a blog that our welfare state greatly enriches our lives; however, that same welfare state has significantly decreased our sense of responsibility for ourselves and others. Since the welfare state has become pro-hibitively expensive, we can no longer shift everything onto the state. Though it is high time for us to reflect on our own roles in society, little may come of this without new leadership. It is up to universities to train academics who are socially engaged, open to new ideas,

critical of themselves and their environ-ment and aware of the ethical conse-quences of applying academic research. To make a contribution – however small – to the wide social, cultural, ethical, personal and academic formation of those people is a privilege for everyone who has been in some way involved in the development of the Studium Gene-rale programme. We are revealing thefirst part of the Studium Generale programme here and it is impressive, if I may, in all modesty, say so myself.

SG LECTURE SERIES

Human Rights are on the agenda constantly. We keep hoping things change to the better, but atrocities are daily news. Uprisings and big political changes can lead to better human right conditions but also to war and crimes against humanity. In this series of lectures we will explore the significance of human rights in a globalizing world. The lectures will demonstrate how human rights are increasingly becoming an instrument by which the negative side-effects of globalization may be challenged.

The separate lectures:1. Human Rights and Poverty (Coomans / 18 Sept)2. Multinational Enterprises and Human Rights (Kamminga / 25 Sept)3. Business and Human Rights: A Perspective From the Chinese Field (Choukroune / 2 Oct)4. Human Rights and Torture (Van Boven / 9 Oct ) 5. Genocide: The Role of Bystanders (Grünfeld / 16 Oct )

Human RightsTuesdays 18 and 25 Septem-ber, 2, 9 and 16 October - 7.30 till 9.30 pmKarl Dittrich Hall, Student Service Centre, Bonnefantenstraat 2Lecturers: Prof. Fons Coomans, Prof. Menno Kamminga, Leila Chouk-roune, PhD, Prof. Theo van Boven, Prof. Fred Grünfeld, International Law, Maastricht University

In series of four or five lectures, various topics that contribute to the academic education of Maastricht University students will be addressed. The goal is to give students the opportunity to look outside their field of study and learn from other disciplines. The lectures are also open to non-students.

Sustainability has become an increasingly important attribute of economic activities describing methods of production, but also qualities of consumption and attributes of capital investment. In part, this reflects popular concern with environmental preservation, but it may also reflect changes in tastes among consumers and investors. “Sustainability” may also be a marketing device which can be employed successfully by large corporations and small businesses alike.

The separate lectures:1. Innovation for Sustainable Development (Kemp / 19 Sept)2. Responsible Investing (Bauer / 26 Sept)3. Sustainable Property, Energy Efficiency and Sustainability in the Real Estate Sector (Eichholtz / 3 Oct)4. Sustainable Development from a Humanistic Perspective, the relation between needs and novelty (Van Lente / 10 Oct)5. Sustainable Banking, sustainable necessity and success in international finance (Bos / 17 Oct)

This series consists of three lectures and an excursion on the art from the sixties to our days. These two key notions are important. It’s not the art that changes but the world that it be-longs to. An enlightening notion that underlines the urgency of contemporary art. But also an insight that leads to rather confusing questions. One of which is: does our dislike of contemporary art show the distress we feel regarding the world we live in?Art is a state of mind. An equally important notion. Not only because it implies that everything can be art - depending on the way you look at it - but also be-cause it suggests that the distinction between artist and public is blurred.

The separate activities:1. Lecture: How to sell a Nazi car in a Jewish town? - towards an extended definition of art (23 Sept)2. Excursion: Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (14 Oct)3. Lecture: The End of History - art in a cosmopolitan world (4 Nov) 4. Lecture: From the Hours of the Day to Hotel Democracy - The Bonnefanten Museum (2 Dec)

The Arab revolution that swept through the Middle East since January 2011 has changed the political landscape dra-matically. No one expected that the events would take such a spectacular turn. The revolution created a new political awareness, especially among the disillusioned younger generations. Old authoritarian regimes with at its head dictators that ruled for decades fell one after the other. The course of events and the outcome of the revolutions in the different Arab states show similarities and differences. In this series of lectures devoted to the Arab revolution the causes and outcome of the revolutions will be addressed.

The separate lectures:1. The Start of the Revolts: Tunisia, Libya and Egypt (9 Oct)2. The Rise of Political Islam (16 Oct)3. Syria (6 Nov)4. Non-successful Revolutions in the Arab Monarchies: Saudi Arabia (13 Nov)

Eighty percent of what we do and think we do by pat-terns. Our minds are very strong pattern makers, pattern users and re users but very bad pattern breakers. When we face a problem or challenge we tend to look for a solution in our patterns. In this series however, you will learn that there are easy ways to break patterns and find new ideas. It will lead from a confrontation with these patterns to all day creativity. This will bring us to what Osborn called: “Applied Imagination”. This is more and more becoming something we need to have instead of something nice to have. Since Osborn in the early 30’s of the last century discovered brainstorming and developed Creative Problem Solving (CPS), together with Sid Parnes, the evolution of creative thinking processes is going very fast. Time for you to jump on board!

The separate lectures:1. Introduction into creative thinking process (29 Oct)2. Assessing the Situation (5 Nov)3. Gathering Data and Clarifying the Problem (12 Nov)4. Transformation Phase (19 Nov)5. Transformation Phase Converging (26 Nov)6. Implementation of Ideas (3 Dec)

Note: This series will be very interactive and more in the form of workshops. There will be lots of time for working with and practicing the learned skills.

Whether we like it or not, science seems to be what has made us modern. Without it, wouldn’t we still walk in bear skins and believe in religion and magic? Isn’t science precisely what distinguishes Western civilization from tra-ditional cultures? This course takes a critical look at these questions by examining the place of science in Western culture. How does science really relate to religion? What are its ties to art? Has it made the world better or only more prosperous? Has it made our society rational?

LECTURES

Klamer has long been ridiculed. Fellow economists did not take him serious - as he was not only against the Euro back in the nineties but also predicted Euro doom and Euro gloom. A couple of years ago, the Euro was still hailed as a spectacular success. But the world changes. Klamer was right. But what’s his alternative? He proposes a whole variety of moneys: special money for transactions between certain companies, special kinds of money for specific regions - just imagine. Klamer holds the world’s only chair in the field of cultural economics. Prior to that he taught for many years at several universities in the US, including Wellesley College and George Washington University.

Alan Turing (1912-1954) can be seen as the father of computer science and pioneer of the Digital Age (even though he did not invent the computer as a machine). This year it is exactly hundred years ago that Turing was born and that’s why the world celebrates this year as the Alan Turing Year. Turing is perhaps the only person in the world who has made pioneering contributions to three branches of intelligence: human, artificial and military. His work extends over mathematics, logic, computer science, philosophy and even biology. Mols’ lecture concentrates on Turing’s life and work and on the question what has become of Turing’s dreams about artificial intelligence. What can and cannot be expected from artificial intelligence? Computers, internet, smart phones and consumer robots are increasingly penetra-ting our daily lives. Our devices are becoming smarter

In 2011, China celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Xinhai Geming, commonly called the 1911 Revolution. In 1911 China was on the forefront of a century of change, renewal and radical transformation. It not only became Asia’s first republic, but in fact was one of the first continental empires to reinvent itself as a Republic and to adopt the nation state form. Subsequently while European empires destroyed itself in the WWI, China witnessed the first golden age of Chinese capitalism and made Shanghai the cosmopolitan center of Asia and the world. And China sets out to create one of the most dynamic systems of higher education in the world - one that would train the scientists and technocrats of later generations. Alexis de Tocqueville is one of the most interesting political philosophers of the modern age. His book Democracy in America, first published in 1835/40, is commonly regarded as the best book on democracy ever. Tocqueville admires democracy in some respects, but, unlike most people, he is also quite critical. He believes that democracy can easily degenerate into several kinds of tyranny. In his book he describes how this degeneration takes place and what we can do in order to prevent it from happening. Although written in the early nineteenth century Tocqueville’s ideas are remarkably up to date and very helpful in understan-ding the political development in our own time.

P. 22Tans Lecture

The Charisma of Adolf HitlerWed 17 October, 8 pmLecture hall, Tongerserstraat 53Laurence Rees, British historian

The Tans Lecture is organized every year to honor dr. J. Tans (1912-1993), the founding father of Maastricht University.

More than any other single figure, it is arguably Adolf Hitler who has most changed the course of history. He used the extraordinary power he held over those around him and the German people to inspire a nation to go to war, commit genocide and celebrate him almost as a deity. Adolf Hitler was driven by an extreme ideology and addicted to taking risks. What was it about his personality that meant so many were prepared to follow him? Why was every challenge to his leadership certain to fail? If he didn’t ‘hypnotise’ his suppor-ters or use threats and fear, how was he able to wreak such destruction? And, seventy years on, is the man who exercised such control over Europe’s destiny still a warning to us all? In this lecture Rees discusses the often overlooked subject of Hitler’s character and personality, and argues that Adolf Hitler was the most extraordinary human being who has ever lived. ‘My whole life can be summed up as this ceaseless effort of mine to persuade other people’ - Adolf Hitler

Laurence Rees was educated at Oxford University, and began his career as an editor on the BBC series Timewatch. He wrote, directed and produced the 1997 series The Nazis: A Warning from History, the 2001 series Horror in the East, and the 2005 Auschwitz: The Nazis and the ‘Final Solution’. He also wrote, directed and produced the documentary, World War II Behind Closed Doors. He also wrote the companion books to his series The Nazis: A Warning from History, Horror in the East: Japan and the Atrocities of World War II, The War of the Century: When Hitler Fought Stalin and Auschwitz: A New History. Rees wrote: Nazis: A Warning from History. (1996). The War of the Century: When Hitler Fought Stalin. (1999). Horror in the East: The Japanese at War 1931-1945. (2001). Auschwitz: The Nazis and the ‘Final Solution’. (2005). Their Darkest Hour: People Tested to the Extreme in WWII. (2007). World War II Behind Closed Doors: Stalin, the Nazis and the West.

This visually stunning documentary takes a common musing - if you dug a hole straight through the planet, what would you see on the other side? - and pursues it to the ends of the earth. Traveling to four pairs of antipodes (places located exactly opposite each other on the globe’s surface), Kossakovsky finds contrasts and commonalities.

COMEDY CABARETStudium Generale is known for its International Comedy Nights and nights of so-called (Dutch) cabaret of young talented comedians. This season we cooperate with the Vrijthof Theatre to offer students a night with tears and laughter at least once a month from September till May. The seats for these popular shows are reserved for students until 10 days before the show, so be sure to get your tickets quickly.

Fasten your seatbelts and step in tonight’s rollercoaster of unfussy unpretentious humor. Please note that entering this dangerously vi-brant night of hilarity is at your own risk. Line up: Steve Dix (UK), Dennis Vansant (BE), Wolff Manuel (GER) and James Allan (UK).
