Japanese Mythology Hermeneutics on Scripture by Jun’Ichi Isomae, translated by Mukund Subramanian This volume explores the history of the interpretation of Japanese mythology, the Japanese at- traction to this act of historical grounding, and the varying identities that emerged during differ- ent historical periods. National and personal identity has always depended on the hermeneutic of scripture, namely Kojiki and Nihonshoki. Consequently, this work makes it evident that there exists no clear and unified substance of Japanese mythology, but rather a nostalgic desire to go back to historical origins and authenticate identity through the interpretation of scripture. 189p (Equinox Publishing 2010, Religion in Culture: Studies in Social Contest & Construction) paperback, 9781845531836, $32.95. Special Offer $76.00 Sermon of One Hundred Days Part One - Venerable Seongcheol translated by Hwang Soonil, edited by Linda Covill This is the first translation into English from Korean of a seminal text in Korean Buddhism. In this Sermon of One Hundred Days, pub- lished in 1967, Master Songcheol (1912–93) develops Korean Buddhism further by teaching what Buddhist truth is. The Sermon com- prehends the vast developments of Buddhism in India and China, including early Buddhism, Abhidharma, Madhyamaka, Yogacara Buddhism, Chinese doctrinal schools of Tiantai and Huayan and Chinese Chan and Korean Seon Buddhism. 192p (Equinox Publishing 2010, Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies Monographs). Special Offer $76.00 What the Buddha Thought by Richard Gombrich This volume argues that the Buddha was one of the most brilliant and original thinkers of all time. While the book is intended to serve as an introduction to the Buddha’s thought, and hence even to Buddhism itself, it also has larger aims: it argues that we can know far more about the Buddha than it is fashionable among scholars to admit, and that his thought has a greater coherence than is usually recognized. It contains much new material. Interpreters both ancient and modern have taken little account of the historical context of the Buddha’s teach- ings; but relating them to early brahminical texts, and also to ancient Jainism, gives a much richer picture of his meaning, especially when his satire and irony are appreciated. 256p (Equinox Publishing 2009, Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies Monographs) paperback, 9781845536145, $24.95. Ani-LaThe Nuns from Redna Menlingby Joke van de BeltThe Bön religion is often seen as a part of Tibetan Buddhism but its bond is actually far more complex and has its own origin in the history of Tibet. The role of women worshipping in Bön and in Tibetan Buddhism is quite different. And although there are studies on Buddhist nuns, there is hardly any research available on nuns in the Bön tradition. This pioneering study vividly portrays the nuns of the Redna Menling monastery in Dolanji (India), the headquarters of the Bön religion, in exile. It focuses on the developments of the Bön in exile, the specific context in which Bön nuns live and how the monastic tradition takes shape. It provides interesting insights into the monastic community in exile, the historic context of the Bön religion as well as the personal motives to become a nun.125p (Sidestone Press, October 2010) paperback, 9789088900464, $50.00. Vi.s .nu’s ChildrenPrenatal life-cycle rituals in South Indiaby Ute HüskenThe Vaikhānasas, a group of Brahmanic priests in the Vi.s .nu temples of south India, can look back on a long and turbulent history that is characterized by the effort of claiming their status against rivaling priests. Central to this monograph is a controversy, ongoing for centuries, as to what makes a person eligible to perform the rituals in Vi.s .nu temples: does birth or an initia-tion create the ideal intermediary between the god and humans? Since the 14th century CE, the discussion in the relevant Sanskrit texts centers around the question of whether the Vaikhānasas priests must undergo an initiation or whether their particular prenatal life-cycle ritual, vi.s .nubali, makes them eligible to perform temple ritual. As hereditary temple priests, the Vaikhānasas’ own stance is explicit: they are Vi.s .nu’s own children, preordained before birth for temple service. The book also contains a DVD with video-coverage of three vi.s .nubali performances.322p, DVD (Harrassowitz Verlag 2009, Ethno-Indology 9) hardback, 9783447058544, $78.00. Special Offer $63.00

Of Death and BirthIcakkiyamman, a Tamil Goddess, in Ritual and Storyby Barbara SchulerScholars of popular Hindu religion in India have always been fascinated by oral texts and rituals, but surpris-ingly only few attempts have as yet been made to ana-lyze the relationship between rituals and texts system-atically. This book contributes to the filling of this gap. Focusing on the dynamics of a local (non-Brahmanical) ritual, its modular organiszation and inner logic, the interaction between narrative text and ritual, and the

significance of the local versus translocal nature of the text in the ritual context, the study provides a broad range of issues for comparison. It demonstrates that examining texts in their context helps to better understand the complexity of religious traditions and the way in which ritual and text are programmatically employed. The author offers a vivid descrip-tion of a hitherto unnoticed ritual system, along with the first translation of a text called the Icakkiyamman-Katai (IK). Composed in the Tamil language, the IK represents a substantially longer and embellished form of a core version which probably goes as far back as the seventh century CE. Unlike the classical source, this text has been incorporated into a living tradition, and is constantly being refashioned. A range of text versions have been encapsulated in the form of a conspectus, which will shed light on the text’s variability or fixity and will add to our knowledge of bardic creativity. Included is a film on DVD by the author.517p, DVD (Harrassowitz Verlag 2008, Ethno-Indology 8) hardback, 9783447058445, $147.00. Special Offer $118.00

Reflecting MirrorsPerspectives on Huayan Buddhismedited by Imre HamarThis book is the first comprehensive treatment of the Huayan school of East Asian Buddhism in a Western language. South Indian PaintingsA Catalogue of the British Museum Collectionby Anna L DallapiccolaThe British Museum’s collection of South Indian paintings consists of around 1000 items ranging from the 17th to the 20th century and representing a wide variety of themes and techniques. Only a very few examples from this major collection have been published before. In this book, the collection is catalogued in full, and 250 of the most important items are reproduced in color. The paintings are described and listed ac-cording to the their topics (Hindu mythology; castes, trades and occupa-tions; natural history drawings; painted narratives; India observed) and according to the medium on which they were executed (paper, cloth, leather, mica). Each section begins with a brief introduction outlining

the essential stylistic and iconographic features. Among this material are a number of highly interesting albums such as a set of 91 paintings depicting Hindu mythology, dating from the early decades of the 19th century. 384p, 250 col illus (British Museum Press 2010) hardback, 9780714124247, $120.00. Yogic Perception, Meditation and Altered States of Consciousnessedited by Eli FrancoThe volume presents seventeen papers by different scholars that examine, from an interdisciplinary perspective, questions concerning meditation and yogic perception. The contributions focus on various aspects, such as the nature of consciousness, the relation of body and mind, and health, and bind together the perspectives and approaches of disciplines such as South Asian, Buddhist and Tibetan studies, religious studies, philosophy and the history of philosophy, medieval European history, anthropology and psychology. In contrast to recent interdisciplinary studies on meditation that take the natural sciences as their focal point (notably, quantum mechanics and neurophysiology), this volume uses methods established in the social sciences

and humanities as tools for understanding meditative traditions, especially those found in Buddhism and Hinduism.483p (Austrian Academy of Sciences 2009, Beiträge zur Kultur- und Geistesgeschichte Asiens 65) paperback, 9783700166481, $63.00. Special Offer $51.00

Meditation and Piety in the Far Eastby Karl Ludwig ReicheltThe result of more than forty years of intimate contact with the ‘religious elite’ of the Far East, Dr. Reichelt’s book is a study of a too-often remote and unknown world. For the western reader, this study reveals the life of the East Asia religious communities, their sanctuaries, sacred writings and daily discipline. These non-Christian religions present a massive front of tradition and dogma, which so far the Christian faith has rarely penetrated. This engaging book is comprehensive in its scope. The author examines the meditation traditions of Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism and Yoga in detail, drawing on his first-hand experiences. Karl Ludwig Reichelt was one of the few gifted interpreters of the East to the West, who knew the mind of the East Asia religions, and had the respect of their leaders.172p (James Clarke & Co 2004, Classics–Religion–Asia) paperback, 9780227172353, $42.50. Special Offer $34.00

Religion in Chinese Garmentsby Karl Ludwig ReicheltThe author’s study is based on his extensive experience and depth of knowledge of Buddhism. He also extends his scope to include Confucianism, Taoism and Chinese Islam as well as the indigenous reli-gions of animism and ancestor worship. Dr. Reichelt meditated deeply on the prologue to the Fourth Gospel and was a firm believer in the con-ception of the Logos Spermatikos. Hence his sympathetic, though critical treatment of these religions, which even to this day are still relatively unknown in the West.180p (James Clarke & Co 2004, Classics–Religion–Asia) paperback, 9780227172346, $42.50. Vāgīśvarakīrtis M.rtyuvañcanopadeśa, eine buddhistische Lehrschrift zur Abwehr des Todesby Johannes SchneiderVāgīśvarakīrti was an Indian scholar of the 10th/11th century and one of the great Tantric masters of his time. He reckoned among the so-called “six doorkeepers,” eminent teachers of the Buddhist monastery of Vikramasila. The M.rtyuvañcanopadeśa Treatise on Cheating Death is his major work. The text describes various omens and oracles to predict the end of one’s life, followed by a compendium of religious prac-tices to escape death. To reach longevity, White Tara in particular is evoked. According to Tibetan tradition, this deity is a personal revela-tion of Vāgīśvarakīrti. In transmitting her practice to Tibet, the Indian scholar Atisa used Vāgīśvarakīrti’s treatise and translated it together with Rin-chen-bza-po into the Tibetan language. This publication presents the first complete translation of the M.rtyuvañcanopadeśa. The Sanskrit and Tibetan texts based on Nepalese manuscripts and Tibetan xylographs are critically edited and annotated. Interlinear notes, charts and minor related texts from the Tengyur are included. Philological, cultural and religious aspects are discussed in the introductory study. Complete word indices of both the Sanskrit and the Tibetan versions are enclosed in the appendix. German text.299p (Austrian Academy of Sciences, October 2010, Denkschriften der phil.-hist. The Prajna-pa-ramitaTexts in Old Uyghuredited by A YakupThe seven texts edited in this volume give new insights into the Prajna-pa-ramita literature in Old Uyghur, an important corpus of Old Uyghur Buddhist texts. The volume presents each text with a transcription, transliteration and translation into English on facing pages. Besides the general introduction it also includes an extensive introduction to each text, philological and Buddhological notes, a complete glossary with Chinese counterparts and facsimiles of selected fragments. The volume also makes available for the first time an extensive edition of three im-portant Buddhist texts, namely the Diamond Sutra, the Heart Sutra, and the fragments of various commentaries. Master Fu’s verse commentary both with and without the sutra text is considerably enlarged, including a large number of new fragments which were identified after the publi-cation of the Berliner Turfantexte I.300p (Brepols Publishers, November 2010, Berliner Turfantexte 28) paperback, 9782503528885, $174.00. Adhyardhaśatikā PrajñāpāramitāSanskrit and Tibetan Texts Critically Editedby Toru TomabechiThe Adhyardhaśatikā Prajnāpāramitā is one of the most influential and revered scriptures in East-Asian esoteric Buddhism. Known as the Rishukyo, this sktra, in its Chinese version by Amoghavajra, has for centuries been at the core of the Shingon liturgy in Japan. Its Sanskrit text, however, was known until recently only through a fragmentary Central-Asian manuscript studied by Ernst Leumann in early twentieth century. This volume presents a critical edition of the Adhyardhaśatikā based on the a newly available photocopy, kept at the China Tibetology Research Center (Beijing), of a newly available Sanskrit manuscript from Tibet. Also edited in this volume is the Tibetan version of the text, Zes rab kyi pha rol tu phyin pa’i tshul brgya lna bcu pa, using fourteen exemplars of Kanjur and a Dunhuang manuscript. The introduction to the edition includes a survey of previous studies of the Adhyardhaśatikā, a description of the materials used, as well as remarks on the distinctive features of the Sanskrit text.168p (Austrian Academy of Sciences 2009, Sanskrit Texts from the Tibetan Autonomous Region 5) paperback, 9783700166535, $60.00. Vasubandhu’s Pañcaskandhakaedited by Ernst Steinkellner and Xuezhu LiThe Pañcaskandhaka consists of a list of all factors of reality with their defi-nitions and, in line with Asagga’s Abhidharmasamuccaya, a succinct sum-mary of Buddhist philosophical scholasticism as presented in the Yogacara-Vijñanavada tradition. This small treatise, highly important for the history of Buddhist philosophy, was known until now only through its Tibetan and Chinese translations and is published here for the first time in its Sanskrit original. This critical edition is based on a photocopy kept in the library of the China Tibetology Research Center, Beijing, of a codex unicus found in the manuscript collection of the Potala in Lhasa, as well as on numerous sec-ondary testimonies. It is accompanied by a diplomatic edition of the text, as well as reading editions of the Tibetan and Chinese translations. A short introduction provides basic information about Vasubandhu’s work in gen-eral, as well as detailed information about this unique manuscript. In addition to the text of the Pañcaskandhaka, a text from the verso of the cover page, as yet unidentified, has been edited by Toru Tomabechi and is included in the appendix.107p (Austrian Academy of Sciences 2008, Sanskrit Texts from the Tibetan Autonomous Region 4) paperback, 9783700161097, $42.00. Red mda’ baBuddhist Yogi-Scholar of the Fourteenth CenturyThe Forgotten Reviver of Madhyamaka Philosophy in Tibetby Carola RoloffRed mda’ ba gZhon nu blo gros (1348–1412) played a pivotal role in the history of Tibetan Buddhists’ engagement with Indian Madhyamaka philosophy, especially with regard to Candrakirti’s interpretation of Nagarjuna. The lasting impact of this historical figure on the shape of Buddhist philosophy in Tibet – and particularly that of Madhyamaka – has been highly underestimated to date. Red mda’ ba was an important teacher of scholastic Buddhist philosophy to the three main founders of Tibetan dGe lugs tradition: Tsong kha pa Blo bzang grags pa (1357–1419), rGyal tshab Dar ma rin chen (1364–1432) and mKhas grub dGe legs dpal bzang (1385–1438). On the basis of his biography, Red mda’ ba’s contribution to the spiritual culture of

Buddhism in his own time can now be analyzed. His biography elucidates, for example, his influence in the upgrading of philosophical studies and dialectics and expanded scholastic education in the monasteries, and his decisive contribution to Tsong kha pa’s foundation of the dGe lugs pa school, the lineage to which the Dalai Lamas belong. This work therefore aims to present the first detailed exposition of the life story and legacy of this crucial figure of Tibetan culture and intellectual history. It presents a critical edition and English translation of the biography of Red mda’ ba, which had long been lost and was first discovered in 1993 at the China Nationalities Library in Beijing.500p (Reichert Verlag 2009, Contributions to Tibetan Studies 7) hardback, 9783895006937, $168.00. GandharaDas buddhistische Erbe PakistansLegenden, Klöster und Paradieseedited by Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, BonnSome of the earliest depictions of the Buddha in the world come from Gandhara. This catalogue includes more than 300 unique objects ranging from the 1st to the 6th centuries AD. In March 2001, when the Taliban destroyed the largest rock-hewn Buddha statues in the world in Bamiyan, an almost forgotten civilization suddenly grabbed the world’s attention: the Gandhara civilization in the melting pot area of the Hindu Kush. Here, the legacy of the artists and craftsmen that Alexander the Great had brought with him to the Hindu Kush engendered the creation of the first depictions of the Buddha, long before any existed in India. 350 unique objects, among them masterworks of stone sculpture, intricate reliefs, and magnificent golden jewelry, cover a wide range, from the Greek civilization in Central Asia to today’s Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan- The Realm of Gandhara. Miscellanies about the Buddha Imageedited by Claudine Bautze-PicronThe papers included here address various issues that reflect manifold ways of approaching study of the Buddha image. Most were presented in July 2007 during the Nineteenth International Conference of the Association of South Asia Archaeologists in Europe. This volume intends to cast light on numer-ous possible ways of looking at the image and as such, should be considered in a sense ‘preliminary’ to further, more specific studies bearing on the topic.

Contents: Introduction (Claudine Bautze-Picron); Seeking the Buddha in the American Museum of Natural History’s Collection (Serinity Young and Kate Bollinger); The dana, the patra and the cakravartin-ship: archaeological and art historical evidence for a social history of early medieval Buddhism (Anna Filigenzi); Aspects of the Earliest Buddha Images in Gandhara (Akira Miyaji); The Flaming Protuberance on the Head of Tamil Buddhas, Its representations and concepts (Yuko Fukuroi); New Considerations on some Gandharan Fasting Buddhas (Anna Maria Quagliotti); The Emaciated Buddha in Southeast Bangladesh and Pagan (Myanmar) (Claudine Bautze-Picron); Gandharan Bodhisattva Maitreya Image, Soteriological function of Ketos and Eros (Katsumi Tanabe); Maya, Gandhara’s Grieving Mother, Part 2 (Doris Meth Srinivasan).124p (Archaeopress 2009, BAR International Series 1888) paperback, 9781407303680, $70.00. Legend and LegitimationThe Formation of Tendai Esoteric Buddhism in Japanby J ChenDuring his nine-month stay in China, the Japanese monk Saicho (767–822) was alleged to have been initiated into an illustrious esoteric lineage starting from a prestigious Indian Esoteric patriarch. It is also believed that Saicho’s Chinese mentor, based on three esoteric texts translated by the Indian Patriarch, transmitted to him some particular forms of esoteric teachings, the core of which is preserved in one of the two “dharma-transmission documents” from Saicho’s teacher. This conventional view regarding the roots of Tendai Esoteric Buddhism in Japan is subjected to a critical examination in this volume. It argues that the Tendai form of Esotericism in the name of Saicho was for the main part created not by Saicho himself but by his followers. 423p (Peeters Publishers 2009, Mélanges Chinois et Bouddhiques 30) paperback, 9782960007626, $66.00.
