It certainly has been a busy start to the academic year 2014/2015 with lots of activities taking place. But before we go any further, I would firstly like to express my sincere thanks to everyone who has made me feel very welcome this year as Acting-Director in the Centre for European Schooling. There has been a superb level of support from teachers, parents, pupils and lmetb head office staff. I would also like to extend my thanks to Mr. Flynn for his support during the hand-over in August, and the continued support from both St. Seachnall’s N.S and Dunshaughlin Community College during my first term in office. Congratulations I would like to congratulate all our students on their wonderful Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate results. Well done to all of you and good luck for the years ahead!! New Students This year we have a number of new pupils starting with us in the CES. I hope that they all have a very enjoyable learning experience. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish every success to any pupils who have completed their studies here in the School and who have moved on to new adventures. Staff We also have appointed a number of new staff to the school this year. I would like to welcome our new Spanish teachers Laura and Leticia, our new French teacher Emmanuelle and our Portuguese teacher Luis who has been covering classes for Rita who has been on maternity leave until November. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Luis for his contribution to the school during the first few weeks of term and also to welcome back Rita after her maternity leave. I would also like to extend my thanks to all staff who recently finished in the school – Kerstin, Laurence and Rosa. Although I didn’t have the pleasure of knowing them I would like to thank them for their contribution to the CES and wish them well for the future. CES Website At present a completely new website is under construction. We will be working closely with LMETB over the coming months on the construction of this new website that is due to be launched towards the end of February. Thank you I would like to personally thank the CES Buzz team for their fantastic work on the school magazine over the last few months and for the contributions of all pupils and staff in making the magazine possible. I feel that this is a great project which encompasses one of the core values of the CES – Teamwork! Finally I would like to wish everyone on behalf of the Centre for European Schooling a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Welcome to the Christmas edition of the CES Buzz magazine. It certainly has been a busy start to the academic year 2014/2015 with lots of activities taking place. But before we go any further, I would firstly like to express my sincere thanks to everyone who has made me feel very welcome this year as Acting-Director in the Centre for European Schooling. There has been a superb level of support from teachers, parents, pupils and lmetb head office staff. I would also like to extend my thanks to Mr. Flynn for his support during the hand-over in August, and the continued support from both St. Seachnall’s N.S and Dunshaughlin Community College during my first term in office.

New Students This year we have a number of new pupils starting with us in the CES. I hope that they all have a very enjoyable learning experience. In the CES we were very sad to say good bye to our colleague and teacher of Spanish Rosa, who had been in the school for nine years. With her family she moved back to her native country and we are most grateful that she took the time to be interviewed online for the CES BUZZ. We wish her and her family all the best for the future!

Do you remember your first day in the CES?My first memory of the CES: the Prefabs in the Primary!!!!! What a change from what we have now!!!! And on a personal basis my first class with Diane, typical question on the first day: “where in France are you from?”, I asked. “A little village in the mountains, close to Nice, you wouldn’t know it, not famous at all”, she replied. “How funny, my sister lives in a village like that called Bonson” and that’s where she came from!

You met and worked with so many students and teachers during your career in the CES. What do you think of the diversity of this school? Did you like it?Diversity: I loved it!!!!! Difficult to handle though when there were different opinions. Different languages and different cultures are enriching but also very demanding.

What are your best memories of the Language 1 Projects that you had been coordinating with Ginevra for years?I am a firm believer in them. There have been so many beautiful projects: Hemingway, the debates, the parents’ trips abroad, the philosophical question, the timeline... I couldn’t single out a particular one, they were all great.

Rosa’s additional message to the CES:Missing you all!!!! And as a teacher I have learned so much from such an intense relationship with the students and the different backgrounds of my colleagues... It has been an exceptional experience that will enhance my future teaching career!

Emanuelle is a Teacher of French LII in the CES at primary and secondary levels.

Laura teaches Spanish LI and LII in the CES Primary and Secondary as well as Transition Year in DCC.Leticia teaches Spanish LI

in the Primary and 5th Year Spanish in DCC.

We are sorry to say Good Bye to Luis who has been substituting Rita for Portuguese. He taught Catarina and Rafael in the College. By his contributions to the Student Council and to the European Affairs Committee he was great addition to the school community. We wish him every success for his future career!

Hallo allerseits,

Heute möchte ich Euch eine antike, griechische Sage vorstellen, von der ich diese Version besonders mag:

Der Name Europa stammt von einer alten Sage. Danach lebte einst ein asiatischer König, der eine Tochter hatte. Sie hieß Europa. Sie war wunderschön und liebenswert. Doch nicht nur die Menschen liebten sie, sondern auch der Gott Zeus. Er wollte Europa

besser kennenlernen. Doch er wusste, er hatte Konkurrenz. Er wollte ihr seine Liebe gestehen, „doch wie?“ Das fragte er sich. Während Zeus nachdachte, träumte Europa von anderen Dingen.

Sie wollte die Welt erkunden. Das brachte Zeus auf eine

Idee. Er verwandelte sich in einen Stier, und er machte sich auf dem Weg nach Asien. Als Europa den Stier sah, bewunderte sie ihn sehr. Er war der schönste Stier, den sie je gesehen hatte. Sie und ihre Freunde ritten auf seinem Rücken, bis Europa eines Tages einmal alleine auf ihm ritt. Er sprang mit ihr ins Meer und machte sich auf dem Weg in seine Heimat.

Auf dem Weg verliebte sich Europa in Zeus. Als sie endlich ihr Ziel erreicht hatten, fragte Europa, wo sie denn wären. Und Zeus antwortete stolz, „Dieses Land nenne ich Europa als Zeichen unserer Liebe“.

Kommentar von Dina: Diese antike Sage hat ihren Ursprung, im alten Griechenland, der Heimat der Götter. Sie hat keinen wahren Kern, aber ist ein schönes Bild für den Kontinent Europa, da Liebe und Freundschaft siegt.

Ο Νάρκισσος και η Ηχώ

Κάποτε στην Αρχαία Ελλάδα ζούσε ένας νέος που τον λέγανε Νάρκισσο. Ήταν πολύ όμορφος, γιος μιας Νύμφης και του ποταμού Κηφισσού. Είχε μαγευτεί τόσο πολύ από τη δική του ομορφιά, που καθόταν για ώρες δίπλα στα νερά μιας λίμνης και καθρεφτιζόταν. Σιγά σιγά άρχισε να χάνει το μυαλό του και ερωτεύτηκε τον ίδιο του τον εαυτό. Στο ίδιο δάσος ζούσε και μια όμορφη νύμφη, η Ηχώ. Κάποτε πέρασετυχαία απ’τη λίμνη που καθρεφτιζόταν ο Νάρκισσος και τον αγάπησε. Από τότετον φώναζε συνέχεια. Εκείνος όμως δεν της

έδινε σημασία, κι έτσι εκείνη άρχισε να λεπταίνει και να λεπταίνει, ώσπου το μόνο που απέμεινε ήταν η ηχώ της φωνής της. Στο μεταξύ, ο Νάρκισσος καθώς θαύμαζε τον εαυτό του, άρχισε να ζαλίζεται, και’πεσε στην λίμνη και πνίγηκε. Στη θέση του φύτρωσε ένα πολύ όμορφο λουλούδι, ο Νάρκισσος.

Ο Αρίωνας ήταν πολύ καλός μουσικός και ποιητής. Πήγε σε έναν μουσικό αγώνα στη Σικελία κι αυτός βγήκε πρώτος. Κέρδισε πολλά δώρα. Οταν ήταν στο πλοίο για να επιστρέψει στην Ελλάδα οι ναύτες ήξεραν ότι είχε μαζί του μεγάλο θησαυρό και τότε πήγαν να τον ρίξουν στη θάλασσα για να τον κλέψουν. Ο Αρίωνας παρακάλεσε τους ναύτες να τον αφήσουν να παίξει μουσική για τελευταία φορά. Τότε μαζεύτηκαν πολλά δελφίνια γύρω απο το πλοίο γιατί τους άρεσε πολύ η μουσική του. Οταν τον πέταξαν στη θαλασσα, ένα δελφίνι τον πήρε στην πλάτη του και τον έβγαλε στη στεριά. Ετσι ο Αριώνας σώθηκε χάρη στη μουσική του.

Érase una vez un niño llamado Juan que no creía en la Navidad. En el colegio, a todos les gustaba la Navidad, sin embargo, a él no. Un día, todos estaban haciendo tarjetas de Navidad y a él no le gustaba. Cuando todos se estaban felicitando, él no felicitaba a nadie.

De repente, vio a un grupo de chicos y quiso entrar en su grupo porque estaban hablando sobre terminar con la Navidad. Pero un día, sus padres le llamaron la atención por estar en ese grupo y descubrieron que no creía en la Navidad. Los chicos del grupo deseaban que la Navidad se acabara. Él pensó que sólo era un juego pero no lo era. Éste decidió que volviera la Navidad pero los otros se negaron y se vengaron de él. Le dijeron que jamás volvería pero él no perdió la esperanza. Esa noche el soñó que la Navidad volvería y su sueño se hizo realidad. Al final las fiestas volvieron y el chico rubio que lideraba el grupo se arrepintió y fue su mejor amigo. FIN.

J’aime bien l’emploi du temps de cette année, mais je préfère celui qui est dingue !Le vendredi à midi je vais au match de foot, il finit à 12h45. Le match gaélique est à 8h35 et finit à 9h15.Je vais au Leisureplex, centre de loisirs, jusqu’à 12h45.

European Day of Languages 2014 in the CES Primary School

As in previous years, the European Day of Languages, had been organized by the European Affairs Committee to mark this very special occasion on the 26th September.

All primary students along with their teachers met in the morning to start the day with a ballgame, introducing themselves in their various languages. A great variety of European languages was spoken by students and staff. Afterwards the students took part in a quiz about Europe and showed their excellent knowledge of European countries and languages. Then all students made their own language passport, showing the languages

they speak and writing in their mother tongue or foreign languages. There were some really creative passports and some students used theirs as a little present for somebody else wishing them a Happy European Day of Languages!

On a daily basis we receive a lot of messages about gender from a multitude of sources. Many of the messages empower us, and many of the messages limit us. During our classes we talked about the

serious issues of gender stereotypes, gender-based discrimination and the limitations that traditional gender roles and expectations place on individuals. We also looked at messages that will empower us to

see the range of human behaviours as possible and positive ways to be, regardless of their genders.

It was Christmas Eve and although it was still afternoon, lights had begun to appear in the shops and houses of the little Russian village, for the short winter day was nearly over. Excited children scurried indoors and now only muffled sounds of chatter and laughter escaped from closed shutters.

Old Papa Panov, the village shoemaker, stepped outside his shop to take one last look around. The sounds of happiness, the bright lights and the faint but delicious smells of Christmas cooking reminded him of past Christmas times when his wife had still been alive and his own children little. Now they had gone. His usually cheerful face, with the little laughter wrinkles behind the round steel spectacles, looked sad now. But he went back indoors with a firm step, put up the shutters and set a pot of coffee to heat on the charcoal stove. Then, with a sigh, he settled in his big armchair. Papa Panov did not often read, but tonight he pulled down the big old family Bible and, slowly tracing the lines with one forefinger, he read again the Christmas story. He read how Mary and Joseph, tired by their journey to Bethlehem, found no room for them at the inn, so that Mary’s little baby was born in the cowshed. “Oh, dear, oh, dear!” exclaimed Papa Panov, “if only they had come here! I would have given them my bed and I could have covered the baby with my patchwork quilt to keep him warm.” He read on about the wise men who had come to see the baby Jesus, bringing him splendid gifts. Papa Panov’s face fell. “I have no gift that I could give him,” he thought sadly. Then his face brightened. He put down the Bible, got up and stretched his long arms to the shelf high up in his little room. He took

down a small, dusty box and opened it. Inside was a perfect pair of tiny leather shoes. Papa Panov smiled with satisfaction. Yes, they were as good as he had remembered - the best shoes he had ever made. “I should give him those,” he decided, as he gently put them away and sat down again. He was feeling tired now, and the further he read the sleeper he became. The print began to dance before his eyes so that he closed them, just for a minute. In no time at all Papa Panov was fast asleep. And as he slept he dreamed. He dreamed that someone was in his room and he know at once, as one does in dreams, who the person was. It was Jesus. “You have been wishing that you could see me, Papa Panov.” he said kindly, “then look for me tomorrow. It will be Christmas Day and I will visit you. But look carefully, for I shall not tell you who I am.” When at last Papa Panov awoke, the bells were ringing out and a thin light was filtering through the shutters. “Bless my soul!” said Papa Panov. “It’s Christmas Day!” He stood up and stretched himself for he was rather stiff. Then his face filled with happiness as he remembered his dream. This would be a very special Christmas after all, for Jesus was coming to visit him. How would he look? Would he be a little baby, as at that first Christmas? Would he be a grown man, a carpenter - or the great King that he is, God’s Son? He must watch carefully the whole day through so that he recognized him however he came.

Papa Panov put on a special pot of coffee for his Christmas breakfast, took down the shutters and looked out of the window. The street was deserted, no one was stirring yet. No one except the road sweeper. He looked as miserable and dirty as ever, and well he might! Whoever wanted to work on Christmas Day - and in the raw cold and bitter freezing mist of such a morning? Papa Panov opened the shop door, letting in a thin stream of cold air. “Come in!” he shouted across the street cheerily. “Come in and have some hot coffee to keep out the cold!” The sweeper looked up, scarcely able to believe his ears. He was only too glad to put down his broom and come into the warm room. His old clothes steamed gently in the heat of the stove and he clasped both red hands

round the comforting warm mug as he drank. Papa Panov watched him with satisfaction, but every now and then his eyes strayed to the window. It would never do to miss his special visitor. “Expecting someone?” the sweeper asked at last. So Papa Panov told him about his dream. “Well, I hope he comes,” the sweeper said, “you’ve given me a bit of Christmas cheer I never expected to have. I’d say you deserve to have your dream come true.” And he actually smiled. When he had gone, Papa Panov put on cabbage soup for his dinner, then went to the door again, scanning the street. He saw no one. But he was mistaken. Someone was coming. The girl walked so slowly and quietly, hugging the walls of shops and houses, that it was a while before he noticed her. She looked very tired and she was carrying something. As she drew nearer he could see that it was a baby, wrapped in a thin shawl. There was such sadness in her face and in the pinched little face of the baby, that Papa Panov’s heart went out to them. “Won’t you come in,” he called, stepping outside to meet them. “You both need a warm by the fire and a rest.” The young mother let him shepherd her indoors and to the comfort of the armchair. She gave a big sigh of relief. “I’ll warm some milk for the baby,” Papa Panov said, “I’ve had children of my own - I can feed her for you.” He took the milk from the stove and carefully fed the baby from a spoon, warming her tiny feet by the stove at the same time. “She needs shoes,” the cobbler said. But the girl replied, “I can’t afford shoes, I’ve got no husband to bring home money. I’m on my way to the next village to get work.” Sudden thought flashed through Papa Panov’s mind. He remembered the little shoes he had looked at last night. But he had been keeping those for Jesus. He looked again at the cold little feet and made up his mind. “Try these on her,” he said, handing the baby and the shoes to the mother. The beautiful little shoes were a perfect fit. The girl smiled happily and the baby gurgled with pleasure. “You have been so kind to us,” the girl said, when she got up with her baby to go. “May all your Christmas wishes come true!” But Papa Panov was beginning to wonder if his very special Christmas wish would come true. Perhaps he had missed his visitor? He looked

In the sunny land of France there lived many years ago a sweet little maid named Piccola.

Her father had died when she was a baby, and her mother was very poor and had to work hard all day in the fields for a few sous*.

Little Piccola had no dolls and toys, and she was often hungry and cold, but she was never sad nor lonely.

What if there were no children for her to play with! What if she did not have fine clothes and beautiful toys! In summer there were always the birds in the forest, and the flowers in the fields and meadows,—the birds sang so sweetly, and the flowers were so bright and pretty!

In the winter when the ground was covered with snow, Piccola helped her mother, and knit long stockings of blue wool.

The snow-birds had to be fed with crumbs, if she could find any, and then, there was Christmas Day.

But one year her mother was ill and could not earn any money. Piccola worked hard all the day long, and sold the stockings which she knit, even when her own little bare feet were blue with the cold.

As Christmas Day drew near she said to her mother, “I wonder what the good Saint Nicholas will bring me this year. I cannot hang my stocking in the fireplace, but I shall put my wooden shoe on the hearth for him. He will not forget me, I am sure.”

“Do not think of it this year, my dear child,” replied her mother. “We must be glad if we have bread enough to eat.”

But Piccola could not believe that the good saint would forget her. On Christmas Eve she put her little wooden patten on the hearth before the fire, and went to sleep to dream of Saint Nicholas.

As the poor mother looked at the little shoe, she thought how unhappy her dear child would be to find it empty in the morning, and wished that she had something, even if it were only a tiny cake, for a Christmas gift. There was nothing in the house but a few sous, and these must be saved to buy bread.

When the morning dawned Piccola awoke and ran to her shoe.

Saint Nicholas had come in the night. He had not forgotten the little child who had thought of him with such faith.

See what he had brought her. It lay in the

wooden patten, looking up at her with its two bright eyes, and chirping contentedly as she stroked its soft feathers.

A little swallow, cold and hungry, had flown into the chimney and down to the room, and had crept into the shoe for warmth.

Piccola danced for joy, and clasped the shivering swallow to her breast.

She ran to her mother’s bedside. “Look, look!” she cried. “A Christmas gift, a gift from the good Saint Nicholas!” And she danced again in her little bare feet.

Then she fed and warmed the bird, and cared for it tenderly all winter long; teaching it to take crumbs from her hand and her lips, and to sit on her shoulder while she was working.

In the spring she opened the window for it to fly away, but it lived in the woods nearby all summer, and came often in the early morning to sing its sweetest songs at her door. (by Frances Jenkins Olcott, after Celia Thaxter)

Little Piccola

They nodded and smiled and wished him Happy Christmas! Or beggars - and Papa Panov hurried indoors to fetch them hot soup and a generous hunk of bread, hurrying out again in case he missed the Important Stranger. All too soon the winter dusk fell. When Papa Panov next went to the door and strained his eyes, he could no longer make out the passers-by. Most were home and indoors by now anyway. He walked slowly back into his room at last, put up the shutters, and

sat down wearily in his armchair. So it had been just a dream after all. Jesus had not come.

Then all at once he knew that he was no longer alone in the room.

This was not dream for he was wide awake. At first he seemed to see before his eyes the long stream of people who had come to him that day. He saw again the old road sweeper, the young mother and her baby and the beggars he had fed. As they passed, each whispered, “Didn’t you see me, Papa Panov?” “Who are you?” he called out, bewildered. Then another

voice answered him. It was the voice from his dream - the voice of Jesus. “I was hungry and you fed me,” he said. “I was naked and you clothed me. I was cold and you warmed me. I came to you today in everyone of those you helped and welcomed.” Then all was quiet and still. Only the sound of the big clock ticking. A great peace and happiness seemed to fill the room, overflowing Papa Panov’s heart until he wanted to burst out singing and laughing and dancing with joy.

“So he did come after all!” was all that he said.
