TheConnecticutStateCapitolisaverylargebuilding.Itsitsontopofahill.Itisnexttoalargecitypark.Ithasatalltowertoppedbyadomecoveredingold.Attheverytopisasmallertowerwithanobservationdeck.Astatue,calledTheGeniusofConnecticut,oncesatontheverytop.Thebuildinghasmanyarches,windows,andahigh,pointedroof.Statuesandstonecarvingsdecoratetheoutsideofthebuilding.Hartford’scolonialcapitolisnowtheOldStateHouseMuseum.ItwasoneofConnecticut’stwocapitolbuildingsforabout100years.Intheearly1870s,thepeopleofConnecticutvotedtohaveonecapitalcity.Hartfordwonthevote.Anew,largerbuildingwasneededwithplentyofspaceforoffices,meetingrooms,andhallways.
Twodesigncompetitionswereheld.Architectssubmitteddrawingsshowinghowtheythoughtthebuildingshouldlook.Thewinnerwas

RichardM.Upjohn.HewasfromNewYorkCity.Hewasthesonofafamousarchitect.PeopleinConnecticutdidnotwantaplainbuilding.Thenewcapitolbuildinglookslikeacastle.Itwasfinishedin1879.Itismadeofgleamingwhitemarble.Everypartofthebuildingiscoveredwithpatterns,colors,anddifferenttypesofstone.Insideandouttherearestatues.ThestatuesareofpeopleandplacesimportantinConnecticuthistory.Somearegovernors,ministers,andmilitarygenerals.DidYouKnow?

beautifulwhitemarble.ItisfromaquarryinNorthCanaan.Theareaisknownas“MarbleValley.”WhatisinsidetheCapitol?TheStateCapitolisbusyeveryday!Thegovernorandlieutenantgovernor’sofficesarethere.Therearetwoverylargemeetinghallscalledchambers.Onechamberiswherethestatesenatemeets.Theotheriswherethehouseofrepresentativesmeets.Intheserooms,thestate’selectedofficialstalkaboutandvoteonlaws.
Therearemanythingstoseewhenyouvisitthestatecapitol.TheHallofFlagsshowsthebattleflagsfromConnecticut’sCivilWarregiments.OurcapitolisaCivilWarmemorial.TheCivilWarhappenedjustbeforethecapitolwasbuilt.Itwasfoughtbetweenthenorthernstatesandthesouthernstatestoendslavery.Connecticutsent55,000troopstofight,and5,000died.

Connecticut’stwostateheroeswerebothteachers.Therearebronzestatuesoftheminsidethecapitolonthefirstfloor.NathanHale(1755–1776)wascapturedbytheBritishandexecutedasaspyduringtheAmericanRevolution.PrudenceCrandall(1803-1890)openedaschoolforAfricanAmericangirlsin1833.Didyouknow?ThereisonlyonestatueofawomanwhowasarealpersonontheoutsideoftheStateCapitol.EllaGrasso(1919–1981)wasthefirst
femalegovernorofConnecticut.HerparentswereimmigrantsfromItaly.ShewasawardedthePresidentialMedalofFreedomin1981.TheGeniusofConnecticutistheothersculptureofwoman.Itwasoriginallyontopofthegolddome.Geniusisnotarealperson.She’sasymbolfortheinventivenessofConnecticut’scitizens.GeniuswastakendownaftertheHurricaneof1938.Expertswereafraidshewasgoingtofalloff.TheGeniusinsidethecapitolisaplastercopy.
