Building the Future Vincentia High School VET Construction Year 11 &12 students were recently trained in the ‘Australian Qualifications Framework for Brick and Block Laying’. Utilising the school training compound students were taught techniques of the Bricklaying Trade in 2 days of hands on skills developing and associated paperwork.

Students were taught techniques of Manual Handling Engaged Wall, Isolated Pier, Sill and Brick on Edge Constructions. Wall finishes including Brickwork bagging and Joint Finishing techniques were applied to each structure. Further training included the use of the schools brick wet saw for cutting multiple bricks to accurate sizing after completion of safety inductions. Utilising a jig saw and sliding compound saw students also individually construct a timber arch form for the construction of brick arches.

Jam packed, the 2 days hands on course left no time to ponder about the rain that began falling eventually washing the students out right on bell time of the second day. Students worked extremely hard challenged with hard labour and a demanding instructor. Yet another fantastic

opportunity for VHS students, a taster providing for future trade opportunities.

With great thanks to Shoalhaven Brick and Tile Nowra for supplying 2 pallets of bricks to support VHS students education.

Prolific street artist Thomas Jackson

creates a magnificent mural

for VHS Artist Thomas Jackson joined us at Vincentia High School last week to create a mural of the local endangered Black Bittern bird. Thomas was commissioned by the school to support Ms Sarah Cunningham’s project based learning unit on public art.

Each Friday of this term, selected students have been working with Ms Cunningham to create large-scale art works to be mounted throughout the school. Mr Jackson came to work with the students and created his work with the aim of supporting their learning by example of a professional practicing artist.

Students had the opportunity to witness the artist at work spray-painting every layer of the mural and also engaged with the artist and ask for tips on their own work.

Our school has been transformed by Mr Jackson’s exceptional skill and the positivity he has left behind on our walls.

A new garden bed adds

colour In Term 4, 2015 Mrs Alison Taylor and Mrs Mardi Morris organised a group of 12 year 8 boys to participate in the ‘Harmonious Intergenerational Pathway Program’ with the Bay and Basin Men’s Shed in Sanctuary Point. Mrs Taylor took the boys one day per week for a term and they participated in the design and construction of a garden bed for our school. The area outside A19 was chosen by the group to

have a garden or extra seating installed. The group decided that a vertical garden with lots of colour would be the best choice to enhance this learning space.

A very big thank you to Brad Slaughter and Steve Collins from Bay & Bay Community Resources who joined volunteers Chris Roberts and Luke Webster from the Bay & Basin Men’s Shed recently to plant out the garden.

Thanks also to Wayne Grumley and Max Walker who was involved last year with the construction of the garden beds and Mr Donohue for making the plaque.

Parent Information: Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with a Disability. The ‘Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability’ (the national data collection) is a joint initiative of all Australian governments and all state and territory government and non-government education authorities. National data is collected annually, in August, to identify the number of school students with disability and the level of reasonable educational adjustment provided for them. The Australian Government uses this information to provide additional funding to government and non-government education authorities to support services for students with disability or learning difficulties. The Learning Support Programs at Vincentia High School utilise this funding to provide improved student learning experiences, educational outcomes and transitions to further education or work. If you would like further information about the collection of data or information about your student’s inclusion in the data collection, please contact Anne Glenday, Head Teacher Learning and Support.
