SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORTThe 2021 school year is well underway; with staff and students actively engaged in teaching and learning. Year 7 have settled into High School well, which is largely due to the successful transition program that is in place at Tweed River High School. Thank you to all staff involved.

Mr Topper and Ms Tarrant and their team have been very busy ensuring that our Year 7 students have completed their Best Start Testing in Literacy and Numeracy. As a result, there may be some adjustments in Year 7 classes but these have been kept to a minimum. The Best Start Testing allows teachers to know their students’ ability in these key areas; and helps them target students learning opportunities so that they can accelerate the development of their literacy and numeracy skills.

The Peer Support Program has commenced this week and will continue for the remainder of this term every Thursday. Year 7 students will be ably led by their Year 10 Peer Support Leaders in various activities designed to develop their resilience and facilitate their transition to High School. Staff will supervise students as they complete the program. Thank you to Ms Cowan and Ms Cupitt for organising this program.

Tweed River High School is a Stymie School. Stymie is a web-based interface that is designed to communicate any unsafe behaviour or any bullying related issues to the School. If your student has any concerns related to bullying or unsafe behaviour, that they need to report, this is another avenue available to do so. Please go to www.stymie.com.au and choose Tweed River High School. Answer the prompts truthfully, adding attachments if appropriate and submit. The matter is then communicated to the school and followed up. Please give as much information as possible to enhance investigation and follow up.

Please ensure that your student has the correct uniform. Hoodies are NOT part of school uniform at Tweed River High School and are banned. As the cooler weather arrives, please ensure your student has the correct jumper. The school jumpers are sold on site at the P&C’s uniform shop on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s between 8-11am. If you require financial assistance for uniforms, please don’t hesitate to contact the Head Teacher Welfare or the Deputy Principal for your student’s year group.

Year 11 have commenced their Preliminary HSC Courses and have recognised the differences between studying in Year 10 and 11. One of the differences is the rigour and pace of study. It is imperative to success at this level to maintain strong attendance levels (be in class actively engaged in learning every day), to revise work consistently, and keep up with assigned tasks. It is not easy to catch up if you fall a long way behind. Good study habits are developed and reinforced now and it is important to ask your classroom teachers for support promptly if concepts and tasks become difficult. Don’t be shy; we are here to teach and help you to achieve your best. Please ask for help immediately as the need arises.

It is important to travel to school safely. Whether that be on foot, by bicycle, by car or on the school bus. Please ensure that you are being safe and respectful at all times. Helmets need to be worn when riding bicycles, road rules and safe road crossing need to be adhered to. Respectful, safe behaviour needs to be demonstrated on the school bus. Our core values of Safety, Respect, Opportunity, Teamwork and Excellence need to be demonstrated on the way to and from school as well as when we are at school. Please work together as a school community to reinforce this message to our students.

Vaping, is becoming more prevalent amongst our student body. Some students are using e-cigarettes on school grounds, while others are vaping on the way to school. Vaping and e- cigarettes are against school rules and will not be tolerated. Disciplinary action will be taken with students who use or have e-cigarettes in their possession while in school uniform or on site. E-cigaretttes or vaping is not a safe, healthy option with some e-cigarettes reportedly having the equivalent nicotine of one packet of cigarettes. Please discuss this unhealthy activity with your students and discourage them from vaping.

Thank you to all for a smooth, enjoyable and productive start to the school year.

Mrs Kim Taylor, Deputy Principal

We had supurb weather at the Annual Tweed River High School Swimming Carnival which was held at the Oasis Swimming Complex in Banora Point on Tuesday 9 Februrary. Students were very keen to participate and we had many fun races throughout the day. The Teacher vs Student swimming race was certainly one of the highlights of the day with the Teachers winning this year! Huge thanks to all those who helped out and participated, especially to our senior students who represented their house so well and to our school captains Jasmine Morrisey and Luke Jefferies for boosting student morale and enthusiasm. Thankyou also to Mr Conlon and Mr Cassar for doing such a great job at recording all the scores. See below for the carnival results.

LIBRARY NEWSThe library staff is thrilled to meet our new Year 7 and to spend time with them during our library lesson once a fortnight. We have purchased a lot of resources to make sure our junior students continue reading. Our Reading Challenge has started so remember the basic rules: you have until late November this year to read 15 books (only 3 picture books allowed). You can read from both the fiction and non-fiction collection. We hope that many of you will participate, just like last year. Good luck to you all!

If there are books that you love that we do not have in our collection, don't hesitate to speak to the library staff and we will endeavour to purchase those titles.

Have a great Term 1 and remember, reading makes you smarter.

Kids – want to win a new phone?Tweed youth can win a smartphone of their choice by simply telling Council what outdoor recreation activities, facilities and events they want.

Youth, 12 to 24 years, who live in the Tweed can take the Youth Outdoor Recreation Plan survey by Sunday 28 February for a chance to win a smartphone.

The survey will only take less than 10 minutes and it will inform the development of a Youth Outdoor Recreation Action Plan.

We’ve already heard from over 400 youths and here are some things from their wish list: a pump track; BMX and more bike tracks; more skate parks and improvements to existing skate parks including lighting; more free events and markets that appeal to young people including music, skate, dance, sport and environment events; outdoor cinema; clothing exchanges; off-leash dog parks.

The survey will also influence which projects are selected for the co-design workshops to be held early this year. These workshops will give you the opportunity to tell Council what should be included and how open public spaces should be designed to meet the needs of young people.

The youth survey has been extended to Sunday 28 February, so head to yoursaytweed.com.au/youth-voice
