Dear Pinevale Families,

I am thrilled to be starting my first year as Principal of Pinevale Elementary School. I am eager to meet and get to know the students, parents, and families that make up this wonderful community. It is an honor to be part of a faculty and staff committed to providing the best possible education for every child in a safe, nurturing environment. I look forward to building on the tradition of academic excellence at Pinevale.

I believe the partnership between our families and our school is an important part of our success. Students benefit as parents and guardians are involved in their learning. It is our goal to have consistent communication between home and school with regular opportunities for families to learn about what is happening at school.

I am passionate about student learning and helping every child become a life-long learner. I believe that our school is a safe place where all children have opportunities to learn and grow. I am very passionate about collaborating with students, parents, and teachers to help our students achieve their absolute best.

Please take time to go through this handbook with your child so that both of you are aware of our school expectations. Knowledge, communication, and understanding are the foundations for a successful and well-informed year.

Always feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Pinevale’s goal in working with our parents and students is to foster a relationship built upon cooperation and trust to provide and communicate what’s best for our students. Our commitment to education and your support will result in great success as we continue to hold high expectations for all students.

I strongly encourage you to join our P.T.O., Parent Advisory Committee, participate in school activities, and visit our school often. Joining P.T.O. and participating in school activities doesn’t only lead to preparing children, it also equips the parents to be a partner in preparing for their child’s success.

Dear Parents, This handbook is provided as a reference. It contains information that will help your

child(ren) have a successful school year. It is not all inclusive. Please refer to the VCS Code of Student Conduct for additional information. Please take time to read the entire handbook. You can help us maintain our record of academic excellence by adhering to the policies in the student handbook. Your support and positive attitude make a significant difference in our school. activities

ARRIVAL Students who are transported to school in cars or by daycare vehicles and arrive on campus between 7:30 a.m. and 8:25 a.m. are to be dropped off in front of the school under the covered walkway. Do not allow your child to run through the parking lot or driveway before or after school. It is extremely dangerous because cars and buses are constantly coming and going. A small child is hard to see behind a parked car. The driveway located on the east side of the campus is reserved for school buses only. Please do not transport your child to school or allow them to arrive at school before 7:30 a.m. There is no adult supervision available before 7:30 a.m. each day. Classes begin at 8:25 a.m., and students are considered tardy after this time. All students reporting to school after 8:25 a.m. will need to be signed in by their parent/guardian at the front desk. No students entering the building after 8:25 a.m. will be allowed to class without a pass or clearance from front office personnel.

ATTENDANCE Students must be present daily to receive the greatest benefit from their educational experience. Unless students are ill or an emergency exists that keeps them home, students should be in school and on time.

Excused and Unexcused Absences: Students shall be in attendance at public schools in accordance with requirements of the compulsory school attendance law and for the number of full-length days prescribed by law, otherwise truancy procedures become effective. Excused absences are defined by the Valdosta City Schools Board of Education in accordance with the authority granted by the compulsory school attendance law. Please make every effort to have your child remain in school throughout the day (8:25 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.). Doing so will allow them to reap the benefits of a rigorous and rewarding

educational experience. For more information on attendance, please see the VCS Code of Student Conduct.

CHECK-OUT PROCEDURES A child will be released only to the legal or authorized guardian unless the school has been notified in writing by the guardian(s) that they have granted permission for someone else to pick up their child. Guardian(s) are asked to deliver written notification to the school prior to the date the child is to be picked up. Guardian(s) must complete the proper form indicating the name(s) of person(s) who are authorized to check-out their child. The guardian(s) or authorized person must come to the front office and present identification when signing out a student. Teachers cannot and will not release students unless they have been signed out in the office. Any person designated to check out a student must be 21 years of age or older. Students who are checked out before 12:00 p.m. for the remainder of the day will be counted absent for that day. Students who check in at 12:00 p.m. or before and remain until dismissal will be counted present. The entire school day (morning through afternoon) consists of vital instructional time. Students are actively engaged in their work until dismissal at 3:30 p.m. No students will be checked out after 2:45 p.m. Whenever possible, medical and dental appointments should be made beyond school hours.

DISMISSAL The instructional day ends at 3:30 p.m. Dismissal will begin immediately after this time. It will take a few minutes to get students to the appropriate dismissal areas. We will begin releasing walkers first, followed by car riders, buses, and daycare vans as they arrive. Please do not leave your car unattended in the front drive under the covered walkway during arrival from 7:30 a.m. until 8:45 a.m. or dismissal from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Parking and leaving unattended vehicles in the driveway impedes transportation during the dismissal process, creates traffic congestion, and presents safety concerns. If you need to park during these times, please park in the visitor’s parking space or in the side parking lot. Walkers will be released at approximately 3:30 p.m. unless the weather prohibits. In cases of inclement weather, walkers may be released earlier or held until the weather improves or are picked up by parents. All car riders are to be picked up in front of the school underneath the covered walkway between 3:35 p.m. and 3:50 p.m. All students are strongly encouraged to pack all necessary materials before departing the classroom; students will not be allowed back in the building without staff approval.

CHANGES IN MODE OF TRANSPORTATION If your child’s normal mode of transportation will be changing (short or long term), you must send a written note to your child’s teacher(s) at or before 10:00 a.m. on the day of the change. This note should contain specific information describing the changes. Remember, if we do not have a note by the appropriate time, your child will follow his/her regular mode of transportation when dismissal begins. This reduces the amount of confusion experienced at dismissal and supports our safety plan.

FLOWERS,BALLOONS, ETC.. AT SCHOOL

Any student wishing to share their birthday is welcome to bring cupcakes or cake and punch to school after 2:30 p.m. if it is convenient with the teacher. Please contact the school at least 24 hours prior to the visit. We must ensure that there are no dietary restrictions in place for food allergies or health concerns. Invitations brought to school to be given out for any type of party must include the entire class. Hurt feelings result when all students are not included. There will be no deliveries of flowers, balloons, candy, etc. at any Valdosta City School.

ASSEMBLIES

School assemblies contribute to the development of our school climate. The number of assemblies and the privilege of students to attend will be determined by their ability to conduct themselves properly at all times, regardless of the type assembly being held. Disruptions will be dealt with promptly by supervising teachers and/or administrators.

The following points are emphasized: 1. Please enter as quickly as possible and sit in designated areas. 2. Please remain quiet and attentive during all programs. A courteous reception

should always be extended to persons and programs. 3. Whistling, booing, talking, and other inappropriate behaviors show a lack of

respect and consideration. Students exhibiting such will be removed immediately from the assembly.

4. Applause is the expected and courteous way of showing approval of a program or speaker.

BREAKFAST AND LUNCH A nutritious breakfast and lunch are served daily at Pinevale. Breakfast is served from 7:30 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. Lunch time varies for each class. All students are encouraged to participate in the lunch program. Due to limited space and quantity of lunches prepared, we request that parents make arrangements 24 hours in advance if desiring to have lunch with their child. Lunch for non-Pinevale students or parents is $2.75. Parents will need to ensure that their child arrives at the school during the proper time each morning if they desire to eat breakfast. No student will be allowed to enter the cafeteria after 8:00 a.m. unless they are riding a late/detained bus. NOTE: Students may be dismissed from breakfast for consistent failure to follow cafeteria rules. Cafeteria Rules follow ROAR expectations. Some reminders are:

1. Every student will go to the cafeteria at an assigned lunch time, whether eating or not.

2. Secure everything you need from the food line upon entering and before being seated.

3. When talking during lunch you MUST adhere to ROAR expectations. 4. Once seated, you are to remain seated, unless you have permission from duty

personnel to get up from your seat. 5. Leave your area clean and free of litter. 6. Return trays, plates, and silverware to the designated areas. 7. Put all paper and remaining food not eaten in the garbage can. 8. Carbonated drinks and glass containers are not allowed. 9. Drinks brought from home must be non-carbonated and in an unbreakable

container that fits in a lunchbox or lunch bag. 10. Food from outside vendors/restaurants is not allowed in the cafeteria. 11. Food may not be taken out of the cafeteria.

The Principal, Assistant Principal, and duty personnel will ensure that behavior remains appropriate in the cafeteria. If your child requires a special menu because of medical reasons, contact a school administrator. The administrator will make arrangements for you to consult with the lunchroom manager for assistance

LOST AND FOUND Articles found in and around the school will be kept near the front office. Students are encouraged to notify any adult as soon as something is lost. Unclaimed unidentifiable articles will periodically be donated to a local charity. Items clearly marked with your child’s name will be returned. Please mark all lunch boxes, book bags, coats, sweaters, hats, etc. with your child’s name.

PERSONAL ITEMS/VALUABLES AT SCHOOL

Students are not allowed to bring cell phones, IPods, CD players, Pokémon cards, radios, electronic (handheld) games, large amounts of money, or other articles of value to school. School personnel try to prevent losses, but we are not responsible for students’ personal property. (See the Code of Student Conduct booklet provided by Central Office.)

STUDENT USE OF TELEPHONE

The school phone should be utilized by students and/or parents for business purposes for emergencies only. Please make sure that your child knows how he/she will get home from school prior to coming to school. Students will not be called out of class to answer or make personal calls. Cell phone use by students is not allowed per VCS Board policy and will be handled in compliance with VCS Code of Student Conduct.

SCHOOL NURSE/MEDICATIONS A school nurse will be available to perform routine nursing care such as taking a student’s temperature, caring for minor bumps and bruises, and dispensing prescribed medication. Any other illness must be handled by the parent through their normal medical professional. In the event your child becomes ill or injured during the school day, it is imperative that your contact information be kept up to date. Please contact our school nurse or our front office as any changes occur. Our school nurse dispenses all medication. The following procedures MUST be followed:

1. Parents must sign a medication form authorizing the nurse to dispense the medicine. 2. Medication must be brought in its original container and must be properly labeled with

name of child, prescribing physician, pharmacy, dosage, and prescription date. 3. Over-the-counter medications of any kind must be in the original container.

NOTE: Please do not send medicine to school by your child! This is violation of Valdosta City Schools Board policy.

PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION We encourage our students’ parents to become active by joining our Parent-Teacher Organization (P.T.O.). With the help of parents, we have been able to provide many “extras” for our students.

VISITORS Although classroom visits from our parents are welcomed and encouraged, we do ask that you contact the teacher at least 24 hours in advance to inform them of the actual date of your visit. Pinevale does try, however, to make accommodations for unexpected visits. Please keep in mind that small children cannot accompany parents to the classroom during instructional time. When visiting the school, please enter the building through the front/main entrance and report to the office to sign-in and receive a visitor’s badge.

PARENT-TEACHER COMMUNICATION

Parents are urged to contact the school whenever the need arises. Teachers may be contacted by note or telephone. If you call during the school day during teacher instruction time, the office will take a message and the teacher will return your call. The best time to reach your child’s teacher by phone would be between 8:00 a.m. – 8:25 a.m., during their planning time, or between 3:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. We value instructional time for our students; therefore, if you wish to have a conference with your child’s teacher, please call ahead to schedule an appointment. Our teachers’ routines do not allow time for drop-in conferences.

NOTICE TO PARENTS

In compliance with the requirements of the federal and state statutes, the Valdosta City School System informs parents that you may request information about the professional qualifications of your student’s teacher(s). You may request:

1. Whether the teacher has met the Georgia Professional Standards Commission requirements for certification for the grade level and subject areas in which the teacher provides instruction;

2. Whether the teacher is teaching under an emergency or other provisional status through which Georgia qualifications or certification criteria have been waived;

3. The college major and any graduate certification or degree held by the teacher; 4. Whether the student is provided services by paraprofessionals, and if so, their

qualifications.

If you wish to request information concerning your child’s teacher’s qualifications, please contact the Personnel Office at (229) 671-6056.

STUDENT PLACEMENT At Pinevale Elementary, students are offered a balance of classes in an attempt to best meet the academic needs of every student. Each student is placed in a stimulating setting that is academically challenging. When necessary, teacher or parent recommendations for changes will be considered by the Principal if beneficial for the student’s academic success.

DIRECTORY INFORMATION The Valdosta City School System has designated the following information as Directory Information:

1. Student’s name, address, and telephone numbers; 2. Student’s date and place of birth; 3. Student’s participation in official school clubs and sports; 4. Weight and height of student if he/she is a member of an athletic team; 5. Dates of attendance at Valdosta City School System; and 6. Awards received during the time enrolled in the Valdosta City School System.

Unless you, as a parent/guardian of an eligible student, request otherwise, this information may be disclosed to the public upon request. You have the right to refuse to allow all or any part of the above information to be designated as Directory Information and to be disclosed to the public upon request. If you wish to exercise this right, you must notify the Principal of the school at which the student is enrolled in writing within 10 days after the student’s enrollment date. You are also notified that from time to time students may be photographed, videotaped, or interviewed by the news at school or school activity/event, or by school officials as part of school publications. If you as a parent/guardian do not want your child photographed,

videotaped, or interviewed, this objection must be presented in writing to the Principal of the school where your student is enrolled within 10 days after the student enters school.

HOMEWORK POLICY Homework assignments are a required part of the learning process. Assignments are an extension of the classroom work to provide practice and enrichment. Homework may be assigned Monday through Thursday, and even on weekend for specific projects. If specific assignments are not given by the teacher, standing assignments may include reading library books, reviewing notes, writing a story, reviewing vocabulary words or practicing math facts.

You can do your part as a parent to improve homework when you: 1. Provide a homework area where your child can work without disturbance. 2. Reserve a time for homework and TURN OFF THE TELEVISION. 3. Show interest in what your child is doing, but do not do the work for them. 4. Look over your child’s homework assignment when it is completed. 5. Encourage your child to be responsible for completing assignments neatly and returning

them to the appropriate teacher. 6. Contact the teacher if your child consistently says that no homework was assigned.

Students should record their daily, weekly, or long-term assignments in their Student Planner. This book will help students manage their time and homework assignments, and will serve as a communication tool for teachers and parents. Each student will be issued a planner at the beginning of the school year. Lost Student Planners must be replaced at the cost of $2.00.

All students should:

MID-TERM REPORTS/REPORT CARDS Midterm reports are sent home at a 4 to 4-1/2 week interval of each nine-week grading period to alert parents about their child’s progress. Mid-term reports will go out on the following dates: September 9, 2015; November 12, 2015; February 10, 2016; and April 22, 2016. Report cards (K-12) will be sent home by the student each nine weeks on the dates listed below: October 16, 2015; January 8, 2016; March 18, 2016, and May 20, 2016.

If a student hasn’t been enrolled for at least 20 days of a nine-week grading period, he/she may not receive a report card. Students will be responsible for report cards once they are distributed at school; however, teachers are strongly encouraged to contact parents of students if they have not received a report card back, especially for borderline or failing students. If a student owes for a book, etc., he/she will not receive a report card until the item is returned or payment arrangements are made. If students’ grades are not satisfactory, parents and teachers are encouraged to schedule a conference to discuss the concerns(s) and possible solutions. Parents and teachers are encouraged to follow through with recommendations for successful student improvement.

SCHOOL RECORDS

A birth certificate, social security card, certificate of Georgia Eye, Ear, and Dental Exam, certificate of Georgia School Immunizations (out-of-state records must be transferred to the Georgia form), and a valid record of residence are necessary to complete your child’s records. All students must be up-to-date on immunizations required by the State of Georgia in order to attend classes.

WITHDRAWALS Parents are required to notify the school secretary when their child will be withdrawing from Pinevale. If at all possible, please give at least 24 hours notice so that all paperwork will be ready on the last day the student is at school. The office will deliver the necessary paperwork to the student’s teacher. Once the necessary staff, including each teacher and the media specialist, has completed the form, it will be returned to the office. Records will be forwarded to the new school after all obligations have been met. Records will not be forwarded until the form has been properly signed. Please note that we cannot release records to parents; all records will be faxed/forwarded to the official requesting parties.

TEXTBOOKS The Valdosta City Board of Education furnishes textbooks to all students based on curriculum requirements. Each student is assigned a set of books with his/her name written in it by the teacher. The student is responsible for the care of the books issued. Lost or damaged books will result in payment to the school. It is recommended that textbooks be covered in order to maintain minimum wear and tear. Parents are encouraged to periodically inspect the condition of the books and to report any unusual wear to the teacher.

MEDIA CENTER Pinevale Elementary school’s media center supports the learning environment through books, videos, computers, online references, and recorded materials. The media center is open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Students must have a pass from the classroom teacher in order to use the media center during class time. The media center may be used as a place for study, referencing material, and checking out material. The maximum checkout time for material is two weeks. Students who owe for library books must make arrangements to clear balances before they receive any additional material or receive a report card. The media center supports the Accelerated Reader Program. Through this school wide program, students are encouraged to read books in their reading range. We encourage students to read and carefully comprehend the books they read before taking an AR test. Although points are given for correctly answering questions relating to the books, an average score of 85% or higher is required to exhibit mastery on all tests. This score gives students the opportunity to receive recognition and a variety of awards for achievement with this computerized reading program. Annually, students are given an opportunity to purchase books through a school wide book fair. Funds earned from book sales are used to purchase a variety of materials and incentives for our media center and students. Parents and students will be alerted early of the start of these fairs.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM The physical education program at Pinevale Elementary includes two 55-minute periods for each class per week. Kindergarten, first, and second grade will enjoy many movement activities and low-skill games. Third, fourth, and fifth graders will participate in team sports, line dancing, and low-level competitive games. Students will participate in an exciting range of innovative activities that will reinforce academic learning, strengthen group cooperation skills, and encourage the mastery of those physical education skills that are so vital for the elementary student. Our belief is that games

should be enjoyed by all children. These games will eliminate no one, are cooperative in nature, and encourage positive social interaction.

Our P.E. coaches fully support fitness and work with all students on developing physical education skills.

Students are expected to participate in P.E. unless a note from a doctor or a written and signed valid excuse from a parent is given to the P.E. teacher. Proper footwear and clothing are needed for physical education classes. This includes shoes that cover the whole foot and have soft rubber soles.

MUSIC PROGRAM The music program at Pinevale Elementary includes a 55-minute period for each class per week. A complete program of basic music skills will be taught at all grade levels. Major concepts studied in the program are melody, singing, classroom instruments, reading music, and ear training.

Pinevale Elementary will have a chorus program for each grade level during the school year. A notice will be sent home with your child with the dates and times. The music teacher will provide activities for development in listening, moving, singing, playing, keyboarding, and music reading skills.

ART PROGRAM The art program at Pinevale Elementary includes two 55-minute periods. This program is designed to provide art classes to all of our students. Our art program provides opportunities for children to develop art skills and have a better understanding and enjoyment of art. It also allows students to demonstrate their artistic talents. Students will develop a stronger knowledge of what art can be, how it is created, and by whom it is created. Knowledge of art history will also be strengthened through active engagement in our Art curriculum.

GIFTED PROGRAM CATALYST

Valdosta City Schools provide a gifted education program for students who demonstrate the following characteristics:

A student may be referred for consideration for gifted educational services by teachers, counselors, administrators, parents or guardians, and other individuals with knowledge of the student’s abilities.

COUNSELOR

Pinevale Elementary has one full-time guidance counselor who works with students, teachers, administrators, and parents to help all children to get the most out of school. Classroom guidance, focusing on developmental issues facing all young people, will be provided for all classes. Students, teachers, parents, and administrators may make requests for referrals or consultations regarding students’ concerns and/or situations. Group counseling and individual counseling will be conducted on a regular basis.

CARE OF SCHOOL PROPERTY

Students are responsible for the proper use of supplies, furniture, equipment, and buses. Therefore, any student who disfigures property, breaks windows, or damages school property in any way is responsible for payment.

MOMENT OF SILENCE In the 1994 session of Georgia’s General Assembly, Senate Bill 396 was passed. This bill states: “In each public school classroom, the teacher in charge shall, at the opening of school upon every school day, conduct a brief period of quiet reflection for not more than 60 seconds with the participation of all pupils therein assembled.” In compliance with this bill, the Principal will incorporate the moment of silence into the morning announcements given to all students over the intercom. See the Code of Student Conduct booklet provided by Central Office.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS Providing a safe and secure environment for our students to learn is the top priority of the Valdosta City Schools. Measures have been taken to ensure our staff and students are prepared in the event a crisis situation occurs in one of our schools. A comprehensive Emergency Preparedness & School Safety Plan has been created to guide our staff through a wide variety of situations. Fire drills, tornado drills, and lockdown drills are practiced to ensure that routines and safety procedures are well established and familiar to all. When you learn that the school is in an emergency situation, do not call the school and do not come to the school. Remember, it is our primary concern that students remain safe at all times, and the school safety plan will be implemented immediately. Staff will be very busy during an emergency and will not be able to attend to the safety of your child if they have to

answer phone calls. If you come to the school during an emergency, in all likelihood you will not be allowed into the school or even into the inner perimeter set up by emergency responders. The presence of hundreds of parents showing up on the scene will hinder the efforts of emergency responders which in turn may jeopardize the safety of your child. Instead, if the situation warrants the release of students, direct notification to you or your listed emergency contact numbers as well as the use of local news media will provide instructions on when and where the release will take place. Students may be bussed to an off-site location for their release to parents. Fire drills are conducted once a month and tornado drills once a year. All students are informed of and practice escape routes. NO TALKING is permitted during these drills. Our new phone call system is Parent Link. This calling system will send out text messages, email, and phone messages each time a message is sent out. EMERGENCY DRILLS

Emergency drills are held at irregular intervals throughout the school year to ensure the safety of all involved. The signal for evacuation is a continuous blast of the fire alarm system. An evacuation plan is posted in each classroom. Students should remember and follow these basic rules:

1. Follow the instructions given by your teacher, administrator, or emergency personnel.

2. Remain with your class. 3. Walk quickly and quietly to the designated area. 4. Return directly to the class when instructed to do so.

The signal for a tornado drill is a series of two sets of four tones (8 total tones) on the intercom system. Students should go to their pre-designated area, kneel down facing the wall, and put their hands on top of their heads. The signal for lockdown will be given by intercom announcement. A pass phrase for Code Yellow or Code Red will be given. When all is safe, another announcement code designated by the Principal or Safety designee will be made. False fire alarms or misbehavior during any of these drills will not be tolerated and will result in punishment to the offending student.

SCHOOL INSURANCE School insurance is available to all students. Information will be available for each student during their first week of classes. Purchase of this program is optional, but is highly recommended. The parent may select school-day coverage or 24-hour coverage. It is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

DRESS CODE

It is very important that parents cooperate and help enforce the dress code. Students who are dressed in appropriate clothing seem to perform better in school. Students’ manner of dress should not be disruptive to the learning environment. For more information see the VCS Code of Student Conduct.

BUS TRANSPORTATION Students living a mile and a half or more away from Pinevale are eligible to ride a bus. Transportation is furnished as a privilege and convenience. In order for it to function properly, full cooperation between parent, student, and the school is necessary. Buses are on a time schedule and cannot make allowances for delays. The bus is an extension of the school, and students are expected to obey all bus safety rules in addition to school rules and procedures. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Students who endanger the safety of others on the bus will be suspended from the bus. Parents are responsible for getting the student to school during his/her suspension from the bus. For more details concerning bus expectations see the VCS Code of Student Conduct. Students must ride their assigned bus. If a student wishes to get off at a stop other than home, he or she must bring a note from home. This note must be sent to the office by the homeroom teacher and approved by the Principal or Assistant Principal, and communicated to the bus manager. The transportation department determines bus routes and riding assignments. They can be contacted at (229) 245-5640. The Bus Guidelines are as follows:

1. The driver is in charge of the bus and the students. Students must obey the driver. 2. Students should be on time at the bus stop and should wait until the bus stops before

boarding. 3. All body parts should be inside the bus at all times. 4. Loud talking and laughing are not allowed. 5. Horse playing is not permitted at the bus stop or on the bus. 6. Keep your possessions with you. (Do not leave them on the bus.) 7. Eating or drinking on the bus is not allowed. 8. Do not throw anything out of the bus window.

9. Remain seated until the bus has stopped. 10. Be very quiet when the bus approaches railroad crossing. 11. The Principal, Assistant Principal, and bus drivers will work together to ensure that

the students conduct themselves properly at all times on the bus. 12. Referrals will be written for all students who violate bus rules.

NOTE: Reference the district’s Code of Student Conduct for bus discipline policy.

GENERAL SAFETY RULES All students who ride the bus shall, in addition to complying with all rules in the Code of Conduct, comply with the following additional rules: 1. Prior to Loading

a. Be on time at the designated stop arriving at least five (5) minutes before the bus is due.

b. Wait for the bus in a safe place, well off of the highway or street. Cross the street to c. Enter the bus if necessary, only when the bus is stopped and the red flashing signals

and the stop sign arm are activated. d. Respect the property rights of people who reside at or near the bus stops. e. As the bus approaches the stop, get into single file and enter the bus in an orderly manner and take your seats. The bus driver may assign seats. f. Buses will stop only at School Board approved, designated stops.

2. While on the Bus

a. Observe regular classroom conduct except for ordinary conversation and follow the bus driver’s instructions. The bus driver has the same authority on the bus as a teacher in the classroom.

b. Remain in your seat at all times, except when boarding and leaving. Do not change seats at bus stops or while the bus is in motion.

c. Keep your hands, head, and feet inside the bus at all times.

d. Loud talking, laughter, and other similar conduct diverts the driver’s attention and may result in a serious accident.

e. Do not damage or tamper with any parts of the bus. In addition to disciplinary action from violating this rule, you or your parents will be responsible for the payment of the

cost of repairs.

f. Keep the aisle clear, except when entering and exiting the bus.

h. Horseplay, fighting, abusive language or profanity, eating, and drinking are strictly forbidden, as is all other conduct prohibited by the School Discipline Code.

i. Be courteous to fellow pupils and the bus driver.

SAFE WALKING ROUTES

Students walking home should use the following safe walking routes walking to and from school. If your home is located behind the school---near Holiday, Lee, or McDougal Street use the following streets: South St. and Lake Park Road (To school) Lake Park Road and South St. (From School) If your home is in or around the Hudson Dockett area, use the following streets: Fry St., South Street, and Lake Park Rd. (To School) Lake Park Rd., Fry St., and South Street (From School) If your home is located near Bethune, Bunche, or Samuel Street use the following streets: Lake Park Rd. (To School) Lake Park Rd. (From School) General Guidelines: Students should always cross the street using the crosswalks, white-lined walking paths, and sidewalks when possible. They should also remember to look both ways before crossing any street. Students must adhere to the school rules when walking to and from school. Crossing guards are at the intersections of Lake Park Rd. and South St., Fry St. and Lake Park Rd. and Holiday St. and South St. Students are to use these intersections to cross safely when walking to and from school.

Education and discipline are a team effort between the student, parent, teacher, and administrators. To provide and maintain a safe environment that is conducive to learning, Pinevale utilizes an adapted model of Positive Behavior entitled TIGERS ROAR, to govern our actions. Every staff member and student will be active participants in this model. Every student will receive instructions on TIGERS ROAR expectations. Our discipline efforts are focused on designing and implementing a positive and proactive school-wide behavior support system for all students. It is important that we continue to implement effective instructional strategies and classroom management techniques to increase student learning. Our objective is to provide a learning environment that is safe and orderly; an environment where everyone is treated with courtesy and respect. Our educational objectives are aimed at the development of the whole child. Students are provided the opportunity to reach their full potential intellectually, physically, and ethically. A GUIDE FOR TEACHING SCHOOL-WIDE BEHAVIOR EXPECATIONS School-Wide Positive Behavior Support is a set of strategies Pinevale Elementary will implement to reduce school disruptions and educate all students (including those with problem behaviors) through:

PBIS

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based, data-driven framework proven to reduce disciplinary incidents, increase a school’s sense of safety, and support improved academic outcomes. The premise of PBIS is that continual teaching, combined with acknowledgement or feedback of positive student behavior will reduce unnecessary discipline and promote a climate of greater productivity, safety, and learning. PBIS schools apply a multi-tiered approach to prevention, using disciplinary data and principles of behavior analysis to develop school-wide, targeted, and individualized interventions and supports to improve school climate for all students.

TIGER CARDS (PBIS INCENTIVES) Teachers acknowledge students who are exhibiting ROAR behaviors by giving them specific positive feedback along with a Tiger Roar Card. Tiger Roar Cards are collected to earn prizes in our school PBIS store. The PBIS team will establish a guideline for the number of points accumulated with Tiger Roar Cards are needed to earn specific incentives. Incentives may be awarded monthly by providing students an opportunity to visit the PBIS store. Tiger Prowls/Monthly Celebrations (PBIS Celebrations) Students who exhibit ROAR behaviors will have an opportunity to attend planned celebrations. **The discipline procedures for Pinevale Elementary Pre-K is mandated by Bright from the Start. These procedures will be explained in detail by the Pre-K staff during Parent Orientation.

Detention may be held from 3:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Administrators must provide notification to parents by speaking directly to them prior to the child being retained after school. NO CHILD SHOULD BE PLACED IN AFTER SCHOOL DETENTION WITHOUT PARENT NOTIFICATION FROM AN ADMINISTRATOR. Students are required to sit quietly during detention. If a student becomes disruptive during afterschool detention, the student may be required to serve an additional afterschool detention, or may be assigned other consequences. If a student misses detention due to absence, the next day he/she must bring an excuse from his/her parent.

IN-SCHOOL SUSPENSION A student who violates the discipline policy may be assigned in-school suspension by an administrator. In-school suspension may be held from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. When a student has been assigned to ISS by an administrator, their teacher must submit the work that their classmates will be doing in their absence. An administrator is the only person who can assign a student to ISS. OUT-OF-SCHOOL SUSPENSION Suspension is the exclusion from school for a period of 1 to 10 days. A suspension may be imposed by a building administrator. No student will be suspended until he/she has been informed of the reason for the suspension and has been given the opportunity to respond. The parent/guardian will be notified by phone or in writing if a student is suspended. When a suspension is assigned for more than ten (10) days, a hearing with the School Board may be required in order for the student to return to school. Students who are suspended are not permitted on school property and are not permitted to attend or participate in any school sponsored events during his/her suspension. Further disciplinary action will be taken if the student violates this rule. If a student has been suspended out of school on several occasions, the RTI team will help design an individualized behavior management plan for that student. This plan will be used to help improve a student’s behavior and keep them in school. All required work that is missed during a suspension must be made up within the allotted time. EMERGENCY CONTACTS & PHONE NUMBERS Please provide the school with up-to-date phone numbers and cell phone numbers so that we may contact you in the event of an emergency. Notify the school office immediately if you have a change of address, phone number, or work location. Remember to update information about emergency contact persons.

CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS

Book of the Month Reading Club Students and teacher(s) meet afterschool to preview books for reading and discussion using the literature circle model.

Technology/Media Club Students will have the opportunity to help prepare/record service and morning announcements, create and perform character skits for recording and broadcasting. They will also have the opportunity to learn how television and internet radio broadcasting work on a small scale.

Pinevale Tiger Chorus Students in grades 3, 4, & 5 prepare for music performances.

Student Council Students represent their homeroom and learn about school and government policies affecting them.

A.B.O.U.T. IT Club (grades 3-5 boys only) Boys learn about character building and utilize their unique talents to prepare for community service and school performances.

P.I.Z.Z.A.Z.Z. (grades 3-5 girls) Girls learn about character building and utilize their unique talents to prepare for community service and school performances.

Junior Fire Marshals Students in grades 1-5 learn about fire safety procedures and serve as an ambassador for and to their homerooms in providing fire safety awareness.

R.O.A.R. Model Patrols (Safety Patrols) Students who exhibit ROAR behaviors consistently, are emotionally mature, capable, independent, motivated, conscientious, and like to work with and help others. Patrols are expected to be positive and encouraging at all times, abide by the school wide behavior plan and Safety Patrol Code Pledge, and encourage others to do the same. They assist teachers and administrators as needed.
