Introduction

Welcome to the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE)! This guide contains

an overview of the important information that can help make your learning journey a success. 1

To help you settle into life at MAE, you are highly encourage to attend our MAE Postgraduate

Welcome Session and Dinner on 7 August 2018 (Tuesday) from 5:30 pm to 8:15 pm at LT 1A.

All the incoming students are automatically registered to attend the Welcome Session. So mark

Academic Matters

(1) Course of Study

Our six MOE-subsidised Master of Science (MSc) degree programmes are taught through a

number of core and elective courses. Each course comprises of seminars, lectures, laboratory

sessions (for selected courses only), followed by a 3-hour written examination. Every course is

designed to develop the understanding of subject areas, promote independent learning and to

encourage group discussion.

Continuous Assessment (CA) will also take place throughout the 13 teaching weeks of the course.

The types of CA that course coordinator(s) may choose from include essays, assignments,

quizzes, individual projects, group work, seminar presentations and etc. All CA grades will be

taken into account in the calculation of the overall grade for the course.

Classes for our MOE-subsidised MSc (by coursework) programmes are usually held in the

evenings (6.45pm to 9.45pm) on weekdays. Each course is covered in 39 hours and usually

consists of 13 lectures of 3 hours each.

(2) Duration of the Programme

2.1 For full-time students

2.2 For part-time students

(3) Mode of Study

The six MOE-subsidised MSc (by coursework) programmes offer both full-time and part-time mode of

study.

(4) Option of Study

Students enrolled in the MOE-subsidised MSc (by coursework) programmes are allowed to choose to complete the programme of study by: Option 1: Coursework and Dissertation; OR Students must complete eight courses from the list of core and elective courses within the

specified programme and submit a Dissertation on an approved project.

Option 2: Coursework Only (Default Option)

Students must complete ten courses from the list of core and elective courses within the specified

programme.

Please note that all students are allocated "Coursework only" as their default option of study.

Students who wish to request for conversion of the option from “Coursework only” to “Coursework

and Dissertation” must complete and submit the "Application for Conversion of Option of study"

form which can be found under "Graduate Application Forms" to MAE Graduate Studies Unit

before 13 August 2018 (Monday). All applications are subject to the School’s approval.

(5) Area of Specialisation

Depending on the programme of study, you may have the option to graduate with the Master of

Science (MSc) degree programme with no specialisation or with one of the following

specialisations: (1) Additive Manufacturing or (2) Optical Engineering.

(6) Graduate Academic Calendar 2018-19

For our MOE-subsidised MSc (by coursework) programmes, each academic year is divided into

two semesters:

Semester 1 from August to December

Semester 2 from January to May

Each semester normally includes 13-week of teaching and learning and 2 weeks of examinations

(see Table 1 below).

For those planning ahead, you may refer to the important events and public holidays listed in our

academic calendar.

Please note that: Classes will proceed normally on the immediate Monday following a public

holiday on Saturday. For a public holiday which falls on Sunday, the following Monday will be a

replacement holiday.

(7) Course Registration Period

For NEW students, two Core Courses will be pre-registered for you on your FIRST semester with

us. For subsequent semesters, you will have to register on your own.

Please take note that:

Full-time students are allowed to register up to 15 AU (5 courses) per semester of study,

while part-time students can register up to 9 AU (3 courses) per semester of study.

All students must check via their GSLink (Graduate Student Link) before the end of the

Add/Drop period to ensure courses have been registered/ de-registered correctly.

No registration/ de-registration are allowed after the end of the Add/Drop period.

Registration for Cross-School/ Cross Programme courses (Courses NOT offered to

student's programme of study)

Please take note that:

The application is subject to the approval of course coordinator and course availability.

All registration of graduate courses outside the prescribed curriculum will have to be done

online via the Graduate Course Registration System during the stipulated course

registration periods.

For cross-programme course registration, students are allowed to register up to a

maximum of 2 cross-programme courses throughout their course of study.

Priority will be given to students registering for courses in their own programme.

Late applications will not be considered; no request for registration of cross-school/cross

programme courses will be accepted after 17 August 2018.

Students who have registered cross-school/cross programme courses will be informed of

the application status via your NTU email account on 24 August 2018 (for courses

approved in Registration Period 2).

(8) Payment of Fees

Billing takes place at the commencement of each semester, and payment due date is 2 weeks

after billing date. A student who applies for Leave of Absence (LoA) or decides to withdraw

from the programme, two or more weeks after the commencement of the semester, shall

be liable to pay the tuition and related fees due for the semester.

Please note that students with outstanding fees will not be allowed to register for courses. All

enquires pertaining to outstanding fees should be addressed to NSS, Finance. Kindly contact Ms.

Goh Peishan Vinda either by email at vpsgoh@ntu.edu.sg or 6908-1460.

Q: What if I want to defer study for a particular semester and do not want to incur the tuition fee for the semester? A: You have to apply for Leave of Absence (LoA) online through the GSLink at least two weeks before the start of the semester. This is to allow the School to inform the Office of Academic Services (OAS) to update your student records and for NSS-Finance to update the liability of tuition fees for the semester. Please note that supporting documents (such as doctor's memo, medical reports, hospitalisation leave etc.) need to be enclosed if there are any. Please ensure you have all the relevant documents scanned and attached to support your application via GSLink System. Failure to submit the application form in a timely manner can have both academic and financial consequences.

If your application for LoA is approved, you will receive an email from us conveying to you the

outcome of your application for LoA approximately one week upon the School's approval.

Q: Can I still withdraw from courses which I have registered for after the add/drop deadline? And am I required to pay for the semester fees?

A1: Yes, you may withdraw from the courses which you have registered for after add/ drop

deadline.

MAE.MSc@ntu.edu.sg no later than the 9th week of Semester 2.

Note: A ‘Fail’ grade will be reflected in the transcript if the application form is not submitted

on time.

A2: Yes, you shall be liable for tuition fees for the entire term.

(9) Graduate Application Forms

To complete each milestone stage of your graduate programme, it is your responsibility to plan your time to submit your application well in advance. You can find the specific application deadlines for each semester on the Announcement Page and in the email sent to your NTU email account.

The Graduate Studies Unit will take at least 5 working days from the date of receipt of your

application for processing to notifying you of the outcome of your application through your NTU

student email address.

(10) Examination

Students are required to sit for an examination at the end of each semester for each of the courses

registered in a particular semester. A student who does not register or who have registered but

fails to take any examination for which he is eligible to sit shall be deemed to have sat and failed

the examination.

A student who is absent from an examination on the medical ground should submit the original

medical certificate issued by a medical practitioner who is registered with the Singapore Medical

Council to One Stop@SAC within two (2) working days of absence from the day of examination.

A student who is unable to sit for examination due to reasons other than medical and would like

to request for special consideration should submit an appeal letter together with the supporting

documents to One Stop@SAC within (2) working days of absence from the day of examination.

Example: A student is being sent by his company for overseas assignment during the examination

period. He is to produce his company's letter certifying his overseas assignment and his air ticket.

(11) Coursework Requirements and Academic Performance

With the introduction of the Academic Units system in the university, the Master by Coursework

programme students have to accumulate a total of 30 Academic Units (AUs) to graduate. Each

course in the curriculum carries 3 AUs, with the exception of the Dissertation Project which carries

6 AUs.

10.1 Graduate Requirements

To be awarded the Master of Science degree, student must:

1. Complete a total of 30 AUs and all requirements as prescribed by the programme of

study.

2. Attain a minimum CGPA of 2.50 (equivalent to an average of C+) at the completion of

the programme of study.

10.2 Satisfactory Academic Performance

In any term of study, a coursework student is considered to be making satisfactory progress if he

attains a minimum TGPA of 2.50.

10.3 Poor Academic Performance, AW and FO

A coursework student with poor academic performance will be subjected to the following actions:

1. Academic warning (AW) if TGPA or CGPA <2.50 in any term of study.

2. Termination of Candidature (FO) if TGPA <2.50 for the second consecutive term of study.

(12) Grade Point Average Requirements

The university adopts a Grade Point Average (GPA) system of calculating the overall academic

performance of a student in a particular semester and for the whole programme. Letter grades

obtained for courses are assigned grade points of 0 to 5.0.

11.1 Term Grade Point Average (TGPA)

TGPA represents the grade point average of all courses attempted by a student in any term of

study.

TGPA =SUM of (Grade Point x AU∗ for course attempted in the term)

11.2 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)

CGPA represents the grade point average of all courses attempted by a student.

CGPA =SUM of (Grade Point x AU∗ for course attempted to date)

Note: Total AU attempted to date is inclusive of AUs of failed courses.

*AU= Academic Unit: Each course is assigned a certain number of AU.

The TPGA and CGPA will be reflected in students’ transcript of academic records.
