Dear Students,

This year, STUDENTALK is dedicated to the values and attributes that shape a human. It is our belief that if you build a human, you build a nation.

If each one of us maximizes our potential, if each one of us focuses on ourselves and on our achievements, if each one of us assesses, judges and evaluates ourselves, then and only then will we know that the nation is moving in the right direction.

To point a finger at others is easy, to direct that finger onto ourselves, THIS is the challenge.

To expect and demand from others is also easy, but to expect and demand from yourself is what is NEEDED.

To whine and to criticize the status quo comes so naturally, but to realize that if you are not part of the solution then you are part of the problem, this is the level of AWARENESS required.

To be a spectator, we all are, but to play the lead character..well..we all have the potential, but it is up to us to make that DECISION.

This issue is dedicated to RESILIENCE. Find out why we chose to start the year with this attribute in the pages that follow.

To 2016,

May it be a year of great awareness, commitment and fruitful hard work.

It’s been 15 years since we published our first issue, and now every month STUDENTALK reaches over 50,000 students in print, (verified by PARC and IPSOS studies), and 30,000 online. We’ve long been ranked as the #1 student magazine in Kuwait, and we’re proud to say that we still hold the top spot and remain the only magazine that has direct interaction with students – a fact that gives us a unique insight in to how they think.

In any university, the students need and deserve to have a voice in order to show their concerns or their happiness with the various aspects of the campus. Abdullah Al-Ajeel is the President of the Student Association at GUST and has been able to become a major voice for the students. STUDENTALK sits with him to learn more about how he has reached the point that he is at today.

President of the GUST Student Association

Abdullah Al-Ajeel

Tell us more about yourself. My name is Abdullah Al-Ajeel and I am a Senior student at GUST. During my first year at GUST, I was a member in Mostaqilla. Mostaqilla is a party at GUST that ran in the elections and has been winning the Students Association for the past 13 years. As for my sophomore year, I was the head of the new students in Mostaqilla and then, during the third year, I was elected to be on the seats of Mostaqilla and I was the head of Academic Affairs. In that year, we made many academic achievements and the President was Mr. Ghazi Al-Mutawa. This all brings me to my current year, as I was elected the President of the Student Association and I hope that I am able to help the students in whatever way possible.

How is it studying in Kuwait? In my opinion, the private universities in Kuwait have higher focus on the financial aspects and it seems to take away from the more important factors such as the material being taught.

What is the purpose of the Student Association? The purpose of the Student Association is to help the students. We are with them and we help them as much as we can from the first day they enter GUST until the very last. Furthermore, we are the connection between the student and the management if they face any problems. The Student Association was found in order to be the voice of the students and we have academic, social, and cultural events throughout the full year.

What do you feel is needed at GUST?I feel that GUST have to be more focused on the material that is being taught and helping the students become future leaders in their fields rather than being very concerned about the financial factor.

Have the students been responsive?GUST has some of the best students in Kuwait and they place a lot of importance on their current and future careers. For example, an alumnus of GUST was Mr. Rakan Al-Fadala and he has been able to open his own business called ‘Chocolateness’. This university has a lot of potential in regards to the students and it is exciting to see what they will be able to come up with once they graduate.

As an educational institution dedicated to the advancement of youth, the Australian College of Kuwait (ACK) has been committed to the planning and development of a nation-wide initiative raising awareness on the health and environmental impacts of smoking.

Set as a priority, ACK’s executive management has put together a core team to ensure the sustainability of the initiative through the inclusion of its students, academic and administrative staff.

Now in its second year, the initiative has witnessed input from its School of Business academic staff and students.During previous semesters ACK’sMechanical Engineering students, guided by their instructors, designed and constructed models to demonstrate the effects of smoking on humans and the environment. It is worth mentioning that the students’ efforts were recognized and rewarded at the Kuwait National Petroleum Company’s (KNPC) 8th Annual CEO Awards ceremony. This semester, ACK’s School of Business students took part in the project and used these models by organizing school visits to the International Academy of Kuwait (IAK)and showcasing presentations to inform Grade 1 students on how smoking can negatively affect them and their loved ones.

Ms. Rawa Al Wadani, a Junior Instructor at the School of Business, noted that the experience had a strong impact on the participants. She commented: “My students have been developing their presentations for the past 10 weeks and were well prepared. However, when they actually stood in front of the young 6 - year olds, and they could see that these children were listening to the message, my students realized how important it was that they show their personal belief in the smoking awareness initiative. I have no doubt this experience will remain with my students way into their futures.”

ACK’s Advisor to the Chairman, Dr. Usameh Jamali, was also in attendance at the school presentations. Commenting on the success of the initiative, Dr. Usameh said: “We need to show children from a very young age what can happen to their bodies if they smoke. This is one of the most important messages they should hear for their futures. I believe that our students will definitely make a difference through this project.”

'Smoking Awareness Initiative' Goes Live

ACK

Not only is ACK dedicated to raising awareness externally, the College is also finalizing its internal policy to establish staff and student smoking zones to contain second hand smoke, best it can. The College is now working on the next phase of this important initiative and hopes to engage with more schools and students in the coming months.

During the 2016-2017 academic year, the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College will engage with the American University of Kuwait by sending Tuck students to Kuwait as part of Tuck’s OnSite Global Consulting Program.

The team will work for AUK, researching and recommending methods to enhance the current Business and Economics curriculum, and conducting market studies to determine demand for growth and expansion in AUK Business and Economics offerings.

“We are eager to welcome the Tuck MBA students to our university and benefit from the experience and perspective they can offer in our strategic planning process,” said Nizar Hamzeh, President of the American University of Kuwait. “AUK has a well-established undergraduate business program and is currently under consideration for accreditation by the AACSB program – we believe the in-depth research and strategic guidance the Tuck team provides will build nicely on our foundation of quality education and drive us even further in that direction.” Dean Jin Wang of AUK’s College of Business and Economics added, “We are committed to continuous improvement and to preparing our students to envision and serve domestic, regional, and international needs. Tuck and AUK can learn from one another.”

Matthew Slaughter, Dean of the Tuck School of Business, commented: “As we prepare future global business leaders at Tuck, nothing is more critical than hands-on experience engaging with other cultures. The launch of TuckGO this year ensures that all Tuck students have an immersive global business experience in a country new to them moving forward. We are proud to provide experiences like these in partnership with schools like AUK who are leaders in important global markets.”

In addition to sending Tuck MBAs to Kuwait for consulting purposes, TuckGO will welcome two AUK student interns in the summer of 2016. The students will work with the various TuckGO international programs and participate in educational seminars to gain exposure to the operations of an American graduate business school. Dale F. Eickelman, Lazarus Professor of Anthropology and Relationship Coordinator for the Dartmouth AUK Program, added, “The Dartmouth-AUK program has welcomed

interns since 2005. The addition of AUK internships for students at Tuck in 2016 is a first for both institutions, and a first step toward exploring other co-operative possibilities.” Beth Hindmarsh, Dartmouth-AUK Program Coordinator, added, “This collaboration with Tuck adds an exciting dimension to the offerings we have for AUK students who come to Dartmouth in the summer.”

The new law will mean that domestic workers will have the right to: work a maximum of 12 hours a day, get a day off once a week, receive a 30 day paid leave and a minimum wage of 45 Kuwaiti Dinars ($150). This law will limit the power of the Kafala System because it will force the sponsor to comply with the regulations of the law. The “Kafala System” otherwise known as the sponsor system basically gives the employer, Kuwaiti or Non-Kuwaiti, the responsibility of the workers visa and legal status. Saeed Ahmed Abdullah, an Egyptian driver working in Kuwait, has felt as though this bill will limit the power of the Kafala system and give more rights to the workers. Saeed said “This bill will finally give the people their rights and will reflect on the country because it will prove that justice is being served”.

Many of the local NGOs drafted the law, but the actual law which was drafted through the Kuwait National Assembly was the one that was passed. It took 4-5 years for the bill to actually be passed. One of the main reasons for the passing of this bill was of the growing concern of the international community, the United Nations and the United States government, on the treatment of the domestic workers in Kuwait and other Gulf states. Humans right watch criticized the Kuwaiti method of treating domestic workers in an article in 2010. The article read “Migrant domestic workers have minimal protection against employers who withhold salaries, force employees to work long hours with no days off, deprive them of adequate food, or abuse them physically or sexually” (Humans Right Watch 2010). Articles like these are one of the reasons that the government showed interest in passing this bill. “Kuwait is one of the gulf countries that cares about it’s reputation internationally and this is one of the reasons for passing the bill” said Bibi.

Local NGOs also took a big step towards this because they were involved in doing many awareness campaigns and discussion panels. One of the NGOs that worked hard on this bill is the Social Work Society (SWS), which is a Kuwaiti based NGO that was founded in 2005. SWS main goal is to “protect, support and

The Kuwait parliament passed a bill that will protect the rights of domestic workers in Kuwait, which is a major revelation since it’s the first bill to pass regarding the rights of domestic labor workers, according to Humans Rights Watch. It has taken this long for a domestic worker’s bill to pass because “there was simply no interest in creating a law since there was already a law but it only covered the labor workers, not domestic workers” said Bibi Nasser Al-Sabah a member of the Social Work Society, an NGO based in Kuwait.

The Start of the Movement

provide services to the victims of human rights violations, and those who have been marginalized and subjected to unequal application of the Kuwaiti law” (Social Work Society). Bibi Nasser Al Sabah, a member of the SWS, was one of the people that worked on drafting and passing the bill. The harsh treatment of these workers is “a medieval way of treating the domestic workers workers, which is in a way kind of like slavery” said Bibi. In her point of view “Kuwaitis are concerned with not knowing the workers culture or religion or they are worried that the workers will ‘run away’ or ‘fall in love with another worker’ which is my biggest problem because its entrapment”.

Like many, Dana Al-Mutawa a local business owner in Kuwait, is concerned about the holes in the law, which could be used as loopholes in the favor of the sponsor versus the domestic workers. “For example, what will prove that the sponsor is paying the worker on time? In terms of companies, we are forced to pay the workers salaries through the bank which has official documentation that the worker can obtain. Unless they will do something of this sort for the domestic worker law, then there will be major drawbacks because there is no proof that they are following the law” said Dana.

Other concerns include the number of hours the domestic workers are still required to work compared to the international work force. “This bill brings many positive changes to the domestic workers but still is not perfect” said Bibi. In the international community domestic workers can work maximum 8 hours, while the bill being passed in Kuwait will allow domestic workers to work up to 12 hours, which is still 4 hours more.

The law will be implemented by January as the National Assembly are in the process of writing the amendments and regulations in order for the law to be implanted clearly. Once the amendments and regulations are clear, the law will include punishments of the sponsor if they were to deny the workers their right to maximum working hours, salaries and days off. This will be a major breakthrough because, in the past, workers tried to report their sponsors to the police but they were not able to get justice because there is no labor court to file a compliment.

The law affects domestic workers, which work in the private homes. Some businesses feel like this law will be positive not only for the workers but for the companies too. One of the business owners, Dana Al Mutawa, says the positive aspect of this bill is that “many of these workers can now switch their contracts from working in a home to come and work in companies”. This is a small change that will affect businesses, but still the main concern is the treatment of the domestic workers.

For the resolution to actually stick, it has to agree with one of your core values. It has to go above beyond superficial desires such as getting rich or looking better. When your resolution has a deeper sense of purpose, you won’t stop at any hurdles or small problems that come your way during the year.

Be SpecificSaying things like “I want to look better by the end of 2016” is very vague. The more specific you are, the more likely you will be able to succeed. Describe your goals and resolutions in ways that allow you to track your progress and measure your success. For example, if you’re committed to a better health or exercise regime, then try and schedule your weekly workouts and stick to them throughout the period that you’ve assigned!

Ink It, Don’t Think It!Write. Everything. Down. It sounds simple and it seems like something that is not really needed but this is a very important step in creating your resolution. But don’t just write down the specific goal, write down how you will feel when you’ve accomplished it. When you have finished penning your desires, jot down on sticky pads the words that inspire you most about your goal and put them around your home/office to remind you of why you are committed to doing what it takes to bring your goal into reality.

Excuse Your LetdownsYour setbacks define who you are as a person so don’t let any failures put you down! When writing down your resolutions, you should also write a small part after each one saying how you are planning to respond if something doesn’t work out. Once that happens and, if you cannot reach your goal, look at what your response was and do that! There is no reason for you to just sit back and dwell on it because you can always do something to change it.

It’s that time of year again where we all sit back and take some time to think about our plans for the upcoming year. Beginning in January, we pay so much attention to our resolutions but, by the end of it all, we realize that we weren’t able to complete many of them. Even worse, we can’t remember some of them! So, here are some tips on how you can come up with a solid resolution.

How to make them Happen!

What is Resilience?Resilience is the ability to recover quickly from difficulties and toughness in order to find ourselves back on the correct path. It’s easier said than done and it sounds quite simplistic but that’s where one could go wrong. There are major and minor obstacles and, therefore, you need to differentiate between them and learn how to keep yourself focused on your priorities.

How do I Build Resilience? With topics such as this, there are of course many different ways for a person to build resilience. With that said, here are three helpful ways to begin:

1) Pump Up Your Positivity – Resilient people are characterized by an ability to experience both negative and positive emotions even in difficult or painful situations. They mourn losses and endure frustrations, but they also find redeeming potential or value in most challenges. Resilient people tend to

Throughout our lives, we are faced with many different obstacles that we have to try and find a way to get through. Whether it was with our studies, families, or any other aspect of our lives, we will always be trying to overcome obstacles. Resilience is an extremely important aspect in the world and mastering that is the key to success.

What is it? Why is it important?

Resilience

find some silver lining in even the worst of circumstances. While they certainly see and acknowledge the bad, they’ll find a way to also see the good.

2) Take Good Care of Yourself – Good health — and a regular routine of healthy habits — are foundational to both mental and emotional resilience. When you’re caught up on sleep, eating well and keeping stress levels low, you’ll be less fragile and less likely to fall into unhealthy patterns following a serious setback or tragedy. Mental breaks and relaxation also help keep stress chemicals at bay, reducing the likelihood of feeling, or becoming, overwhelmed and reactive.

3) Humor – Laughing in the face of adversity can be profoundly pain relieving, for both the body and mind. Comedy makes you laugh and a good sense of humor will always be extremely helpful for you to keep your mind fresh and relaxed.

This way, when facing a difficult situation, you will be able to deal with it while having an open mind.

Why do we Need Resilience? The resilient people are able to think about things in a very different way. When something happens in their life, they review the situation afterwards, they step back and ask themselves: what can I learn from this? When things get difficult they are able to stop and pause. This creates a gap. In this gap they create a conscious choice to respond to what’s happening rather than reacting to the situation.

While attending my years at university here in Kuwait, I went in prepared to graduate from there as one of the students with the highest grades while also feeling like it was as important for me to meet new people and make some new friends along the way. As a high school student, there is something you hear a lot, which is that the university life is different and you need to understand that there is a lot more freedom there that you aren’t used to. Unfortunately, a lot of us choose not to listen to the advice and begin our university years thinking that it is all possible.

As time goes on and you make new friends, you start to think that you are ahead of it all, especially regarding your classes. You start to think to yourself that there is no need to go to this class since I’ve been attending all the previous ones and I deserve a break! Well, one thing needs to be said here: You don’t deserve a break from your classes. The great thing about university is that you get to pick what you

University can be a very difficult time for any student who wants to come out with some great memories of the those years while also wanting to make sure that their grades are high so that they can have a great future. During those years, there are a lot of circumstances that cause extra pressure and sometimes, it could be too much to handle!

Standing up to the Pressure

Personal Resilience

want to study while you also get to choose the timings for your classes most of the time. So, if you have been able to choose all that and you know how you are as a student, then why would you put yourself in a situation to skip class?

I have skipped classes during my university years and, more often than not, it ended in regret. One particular semester, I thought that I knew everything that was happening and therefore there was no need to attend class. One thing led to another and I found myself missing almost a week or so of classes and, when I went back, I was instantly lost. I didn’t know what they were talking about and my Professor spoke to me after class saying that I am losing grades and it will be difficult to get it higher once again.

At that point, I needed to make a decision. Either I withdraw from the class while I still can and hope that I can take it in another semester or I can do everything in my power to raise

my grade once again. The thing is that, at the time this was all happening, I also had external factors that were affecting my ability to concentrate and I was using it all as an excuse. I felt like it was okay because of the problems that I faced elsewhere.

I decided to withdraw and, when I took it in the following semester, I realized how important it was to attend all of the classes. I had to work extra hard because I know that I made my time even more difficult by adding an extra class to my semester and I needed to work through it. I had to put aside the social aspect of university for a while and focused solely on my studies.

No matter what pressure is getting you down or making you feel like you simply cannot make things work, you need to get up and try again while being as resilient as you possibly can be. I know that actions speak louder than words but the hard work and dedication will definitely pay off in the end of it all.

Making Kuwait Proud Active Students

I found out about OXadventure from a poster at college. There were organizing a trip to India at the time but, unfortunately, I wasn’t able to join them. The reason why I decided to join them this time is because I really appreciate it when someone shows effort to help me. So, I wanted to be the reason for making someone’s day and to know what it feels like to be the reason that someone smiled.

On the first day, I was very nervous and worried about how I was going to deal with 14 people that I have never met keeping in mind that I

will be spending two weeks with them! I just told myself that I will just go there and treat everyone like I have known them for a long time. I won’t change anything about who I am or put myself under pressure.

Our trip consisted of three days of charity work and visiting temples to get to know the many aspects of Nepal’s culture. I got to work with lovely kids, and I still remember this girl named Sweety. Just as her name suggests, she was such a sweetheart. Wherever we went or whatever we did, she was always there.

Page 31: StudenTalk #174 - January 2016

I don’t know if she was sneaking out of her classes but she always kept us company. Sweety even wanted to help us with the construction. We’d tell her to leave it to us and that we didn’t want her to get hurt, but she was always eager to help. She even helped us with lifting and moving little blocks.

On the other days of the trip we went trekking in Pokhara, and that’s where we made the best memories. We met Manohar and Yogish there, our local hike guides. Yogish was also our yoga instructor. We started and ended every day with yoga stretches with him, and even had some along the hike to ensure safety while trekking and avoid injuries like twisting our ankles.

The first day was the hardest and I almost gave up. However, Abdulwahab, another volunteer on the trip, motivated me. He was saying things like “Man, just keep going! We’ll find some orange at the end of the road!” For some reason he managed to persuade me with that. Weirdly enough, the idea of chilling on the ground, resting and having this orange (that never existed) once we arrived at camp kept me motivated. Well, that was until we got to the stairs. I’m telling you, everyone there hated those stairs, but the funny thing was that what made me survive the stairs is that we found oxen everywhere! I thought if these cows can do it, why in the world can’t I?

The next morning, after yoga and breakfast, it was time to get moving again. The first words that came out of my mouth were ‘Oh, God! Please, no!’ Why? Because there was a massive staircase, again! That day reminded me of Led Zeppelin’s song ‘Stairway to Heaven’. I mean, each day has it’s own special moments and memories, but the third and fourth days were very tough. I personally stayed in my tent because there was a storm. Everything was fine until I needed to use the restroom. I pulled it together and convinced myself that I really didn’t care about the storm. I walked out and realized that there was this little dog following me everywhere, too scared to be alone in that storm! I wasn’t able to get rid of the dog no matter what I did or what language I spoke!

I have many lessons from that trip, the biggest of which is being grateful for all that I have in my life. Prior to the trip, I used to look at what other people had with envy, and I would always question why I didn’t have what they did. I used to look at the glass as half empty. After that trip, I instantly started looking at the glass half full. My experience with OXadventure taught me how to not be materialistic, and appreciate the things I’m blessed with.

This experience has inspired me to help people by sharing my personal escapades, even the rawest of things that not everyone would be comfortable with sharing. So much so, I even started a blog. In it, I share random thoughts, experiences, and life-happenings (from my weight loss journey to long term life and career goals). I can safely say that I am a much better person today than I was before the trip, thanks to OXadventure. I’m very grateful for this unforgettable and life changing experience.

Talent Competition

32

Tell us more about yourself My name is Noura Zaher and I am 20 years old. I am a second year Graphic Design major at AUK. I’m a very bubbly person who likes to spend time with my friends. I love helping others and being there for my friends. I enjoy watching anime and movies, and playing video games and sports. I also love reading novels and drawing.

What is your talent?I simply love drawing. I mostly draw realism, but I love drawing anime and cartoons as well. I have the ability to draw portraits of real people.I also love creating my own characters. I am skilled at using pencils and color pencils.

How did you develop your talent?Since I was about 4 years old, I drew every day to improve myself. In school, art classes helped me a bit to understand artistic techniques, shading and anatomy. I developed my own recognizable drawing style then. I also drew comics for a while. I like to go for hard drawings that would give me a challenge and make me learn something new. I kept practicing through high school, creating my own characters or using references, as well as drawing people and still-life. Graphic Design helped me learn digital art, as I learned the basics of the design software. I found it easy to apply my drawing style digitally and I learned digital art quickly.

What are your future plans?I plan to work with color pencils and digital art on my live portraits and see how they turn out! As for the work field, I am hoping to take my master’s degree after college. However, I do not know what the future holds as I like to live in the moment. I will let life surprise me.

Who supported your talent? All my family and friends motivate me to achieve my best and pursue my passion. I am thankful to them for encouraging me and making me feel special.

Did you encounter any obstacles?I think any artist experiences art blocks at times. However I do not think I experienced anything major because I think drawing shouldn’t pressure me, but rather a way to enjoy my time. I just practice and take my time to get better.

Any last words for the readers?Take your time to be at your best and don’t let anyone bring you down. Always appreciate your talent and practice it, however small, big or unusual it is. Try to get inspired by others’ work and appreciate them. Never compare yourself to others or get discouraged, because each person is special in their own way and style.

I am not only interested in becoming a Graphic Designer; I am interested in becoming a music producer as well as an Author. Furthermore, I label myself as someone who has multiple talents. I love to experiment with ideas when comes to Art, and music. I am interested in any type of gadgets and technology.

What is your talent?I love to add a little bit of my background to bring my art to life as well as the music I do. I express art and in so many ways, chaotic, messy, unique, and creative ways. Also a part of my talent is that I draw characters, Characters that I represent me. Cartoons, but they are included in the doodles that I create from time to time. My last three hobbies that I do, is designing characters for video games on a video game software design, but you could say I am just a beginner.

How did you develop you talent?I develop my talents by being inspired by many artists all over the world. Then, I began creating my own. Some of my talents are coming from practices, and some I am born with. Looking at different artists really makes me think outside of the box. Furthermore, most of my talents come from reading tons of research, books, and media itself. Media plays a huge role in our talents, it’s what brings our work to life. It motivates us to do more of our work, it improves us to do better.

What are your future plans? My future plans are to pursue a Master degree as well as a PhD in video game design at any university in Canada. I will also be apart of becoming a great Author as well as an amazing music producer, which I am doing right now. I am working with different kind of artist along with the music I do. Additionally, I will be doing multiple jobs all at once. I love what I do.

Who supported your talents? My friends and family supports my talents. My family encourages me to focus on Art. Just to use my talent on Art. Though, I still do multiple talents, it makes me feel so different and unique.

Rawan

www.studentalk-online.com

Noura vs. Rawan

Did you encounter any obstacles? Not really, I had many people loving my work, because I try to improve my work before showing them to anyone. Making sure that what I am doing looks right sounds right, and expressed right. Then I am able to show it. However, people will always talk badly about your work or tells you that wrong. But I believe if you love what you do, you have a reason, and people who are close to you love it and adore it, then your good to go, because in life, you will experience different kind of people, different interests. They have different points of view. But do what makes you happy. Rely on yourself, and trust me there are people who love what you do.

Any last word for the readers?Do what ever you want to do. Become whoever you want to become. Express the world your talents, and it can be as many talents as you want. There is no one talent. You can have many. All I want to say is be yourself when you’re describing your work. There is no failure to me. Everyone is a winner. Everyone has something unique about himself or herself.

AUTO1 – Tires (Al Ghannam Tire Center Co) is organizing the first ever FALKEN Tire Change Challenge at your campus during the first week of February 2016. Entry is open to all students of AUM in teams of 3. The competition is in association with STUDENTALK Magazine who will be the contact point for registering and getting the competition details. The tentative date for the competition is set for the beginning of February, 2016 from 11:30 to 2:30 pm at the main car park.

So what’s this Tire Change Challenge? It’s simple. The teams would be timed for the fastest tire change which include lifting the vehicle on a hydraulic jack, loosening the screws, remove the flat tire and replace it with a new tire and tighten back the screws and release the jack. All teams will be provided with necessary tools, hydraulic jack, gloves, a vehicle and replacement tires at the venue.

We would have the teams on video and your friends and family can then vote online at www.studentalk-online.com for the best team and the winner would be announced the following month.

Why the Challenge? Simply because AUTO1 – Tires wishes every vehicle driver to know the basic steps of changing a flat tire rather than getting stranded on the road especially if you are running late for your appointment or busy shopping with your friends and family, etc. But you must be asking why bother with such a trivial matter, when I could call someone from home or a garage to change the tire.

Well the truth of the matter is that sometimes we may not have that luxury or convenience of availing that service and it would be best to know how to change tires and proceed to the nearest tire repair shop. Besides, this is a fun activity that would help you reduce your academic stress and win cool prizes from AUTO1 for all teams that participate; and a special prize for the winning team.

Mind you we already got couple of teams (both boys and girls) registered and this is an opportunity you wouldn’t want to miss! Therefore, contact us through Ali Al-Hassan ([email protected]) to register your team.

Are you ready for the FALKEN Tire Change Challenge?

While growing up, Colette-Dalal realized quite early on that she was a creative person through her liking of certain subjects in school. Practical learning was definitely her field and the introduction of drama to school was what made it all even clearer to her. She started writing plays, creating different costumes, and acting in after-school events. The performing arts had a lot of influence on the school as a whole at that time.

Auditioning to the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts was a nerve-wrecking experience as she knew this was exactly what she wanted and needed to go there in order to make it all work out. Fortunately, she was able to get in as the first ever student from Kuwait to be accepted there and one of two who made it through by a video audition in her year. The difference of culture and how things operated there were an initial shock as she was able to keep herself together and graduated with a Bachelors Degree with Honors and she was signed by an agent and moved over to London to begin a career that she has been dreaming of since she was a young child.

“Explore, explore, explore! I was always exploring like a child and was able to look at everything from all angles” is something that Colette-Dalal believes is extremely important and has been able to bring it into her workshops and various projects that she has been working on. She continues to learn and she continues to explore until today in order to improve herself as an actor and, more importantly, as a person. In preparing her workshops, she takes the opportunity to get into the depths of everything that she explores along the way.

When she grew up in Kuwait, there is always a certain way of learning that wasn’t really in her field. It made her re-think everything about herself but she was always able to learn well when it came to fields that interested her such as literature and history. “I feel like the education system right now focuses on one type of person. If you are not as adaptable as everyone else, it doesn’t mean that there is something wrong with you but rather that

you are different. Everyone is different. I think about all the people who fell to the wayside because they weren’t able to learn in the way that they were expected to learn”. Now, there is this artistic creative movement and, after seeing flash words for job applications such as them looking for someone “Innovative”, it’s difficult because we weren’t taught to be that way. “We have become more aware and I have so much respect for people who look for what they like and dig deeper into finding information to evolve into the person that they want to be.” Taking that initiative has made Colette-Dalal

reach the point that she is at today. The workshops are not about “creating an actor” but rather it is a step towards being the person that you want to be. It is a training that helps you find yourself no matter what path you are on right now.

“No matter where you are from, your dreams are valid…” - Lupita Nyong’o.

Colette-Dalal continues to meet so many different people in her journey and she has been able to meet people from unique backgrounds,

which has made her realize that following your dreams are extremely important.

She continues to fight and follow her goals and her vision as she works on her workshops, creative projects, and performances.

“I hope that my intentions continue to strengthen and I want to encourage everyone to get to know themselves. You are with yourself everyday and therefore you might as well get to know yourself. You fight to become the person that you want to be.”

Hublot Middle East & Africa Regional Director Marco Tedeschipresented the campaign and announced the new face of the campaign during Bahrain’sJewelleryArabia 2015 at the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre, in the presence of watch connoisseurs, collectors and media. “Hublot started out as a brand offering men’s watches; however, with our ‘Art of Fusion’ ideas, we succeeded in creating extremely feminine watches that

bring together innovative techniques, fashion and glamour, whether with the Big Bang Broderie collection or with the TuttiFrutti and Jeans lines. We will increase the number of ladies’ collections in 2016; as such, our Middle East and Africa campaign featuring Daniella Rahme will bring our female customers closer to our luxurious and stylish timepieces,” said Marco Tedeschi.

The campaign, in its three looks, is set in different backgrounds that depict some of the region’s assets; a panoramic view from an ancient fort, an old house in a fishing village and a sea shore at sunset. The warm hues of the images do not break with the past; Hublot is actually paying homage to it by connecting it to the future.

Cutting-edge wrist candyChameleon-like chocolate ceramic adapts to subtle changes in the lighting conditions, transitioning from sweet and light to velvety and dark, just like the Swiss confections that inspired it. The result: bold but versatile autumnal accents ideal for a range of outfits and skin tones – the perfect pieces to pair with a woolen blazer or cashmere sweater. A luxurious alternative to the classic tortoiseshell pattern, Rado’s brown high-tech ceramic is a captivating neutral that adds understated interest to any fall or winter ensemble.

Rado’s chocolate brown HyperChrome timekeepers are not only objects of desire, but also objects of everlasting beauty. Thanks to the properties of Rado’s high tech ceramic, their rich brown hue will not fade over time. Sumptuous chocolate brown ceramic is the latest in Rado’s notable range of high-tech ceramic colors – the inaugural black first pioneered by the watchmaker three decades ago, followed by a pristine white, an elegant grey, and a metallic plasma. Like its predecessors, it is available in both polished and matt finishes. Creating consistent colors with ceramic processes is notoriously difficult, but Rado’s mastery of materials and vision of superior quality have made these concerns a thing of the past.

Gadgets A lot of wearables keep tabs on health or sleeping habits, but Nod takes a different approach. It’s a gesture-based ring that can be used to control various gadgets.

The Nod Ring

The stainless-steel ring is packed with motion sensors, a Bluetooth 4.0 antenna, and a pair of processors. According to Nod co-founder and CEO Anush Elangovan, the ring uses a Bluetooth Low Energy connection for all its needs.

It weighs about two ounces and therefore it’s definitely bulkier than your average wedding band. With that said, the ring is designed to be worn on an index finger, and it flares out into a flat control surface on the palm side. This area hosts a touch-sensitive strip you control with swipes of your thumb. On the sides of that strip are more sensors, which recognize when adjacent fingers are touching the ring. According to Elangovan, that’s the secret behind how the ring is able to sense two - or three-finger swiping gestures.

The Future is Here

Lifestyle Gadgets

Waving your hand back and forth to navigate through business presentations, tapping and swiping the ring to use it as a remote control for your phone’s music player, and using the ring as a Kinect-like motion sensor while you’re playing games on a TV or a tablet all seem convenient. It’s all there for you to handle in a much simpler way! The company have confirmed that the ring-controller will be compatible with Android and iOS phones and tablets, Windows PCs and Macs, GoPro cameras, Roku boxes, newer LG TVs, and Google Glass!!

You know what that means? It means you’ll be able to navigate a pair of glasses tethered to your smartphone with a fancy gesture-control ring.

Yes, the future has arrived!

CarsFor the second year in a row, the Dodge Charger has earned the prestigious Residual Value Award in the “Full-size Car” category from ALG, the industry benchmark for residual values and depreciation data.

Back-to-back RecognitionDodge Charger Receives ALG's 2016 Residual Value Award

For Dodge, it’s not enough to design and engineer the 2016 Charger as the quickest, fastest and most powerful sedan in the world. Instead, Dodge continues to build on the brand’s promise and deliver a lineup of Charger models with world-class power, efficiency, technology, authentic materials and standout styling - all to make America’s only four-door muscle car one of the hottest and most desirable sedans available today.

“Striking a delicate balance between traditional sedan and muscle car, the Dodge Charger represents shifting trends in the full-size segment,” said Eric Lyman, Vice President of Industry Insights for ALG. “A wide range of powertrain and comfort features ensures there is a perfect Charger for every personality, from cruising in style to tearing up the Roods.”

ALG recognises 26 vehicles with segment awards, along with two brands representing the mainstream and premium sectors of the industry. This year’s awards are based on 2016 model-year vehicles. Award winners are determined through careful study of the competition in

each segment, historical vehicle performance and industry trends. Vehicle quality, production levels relative to demand and pricing and marketing strategies represent key factors that impact ALG’s residual value forecasts.

“The back-to-back ALG Residual Value Award is a testament to the entire Dodge team’s commitment to designing and engineering America’s most exciting performance sedan,” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands - Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA - North America. “This accolade also reinforces our position that customers want unique vehicles like the Dodge Charger, performance vehicles that break the pattern from other sedans on the road.”

The Dodge Charger lineup - available now at all MBMC showrooms in Kuwait - offers extensive performance-driven powertrains, the latest technology under the hood and behind the wheel, which builds on the brand’s promise to deliver American performance machines with world-class power, efficiency, technology, authentic materials and standout styling.

La Liga: Barcelona have soared in ways we didn’t completely imagine as Real Madrid have gone through one chaotic situation after another. Furthermore, we see the dark horse of the season, Celta de Vigo, surprising everyone time and time again. The top 5 in Spain now is not 100% surprising but what do we thing can happen by the time we reach the end of the season?

My Predictions:• Barcelona• Atletico Madrid• Real Madrid• Celta de Vigo• Valencia

Serie A:Napoli have been stealing the headlines during this season as they (quite surprisingly) see themselves fighting for first place after the change of manager in the summer. Juventus, which were the team expected to be comfortably ahead at this time are fighting to be in the top 5. I don’t expect it to stay that way for the rest of the season though but it will definitely be interesting to see how things go!

My Predictions:• Inter Milan• Napoli• Juventus• AS Roma• Fiorentina

English Premier League:After the departure of Brendan Rodgers during the season, Liverpool have been the team to watch under their new manager Jurgen Klopp. Surprisingly, the team that everyone is now keeping an eye on is Leicester City! This is a team who have been able to show their strengths and are appearing to be contenders for at least a UEFA Champions League place with Jamie Vardy taking all the plaudits. Elsewhere, we see Chelsea struggling to be in a top 10 place this season after being crowned champions last year.

My Predictions:• Manchester City• Manchester United• Leicester City• Liverpool• Arsenal

What Has Changed?

Mid-Season Predictions

The beginning of the season is extremely promising for every single team as the new signings and preseason matches show a bright future ahead. Now, as we look at the teams again in January, things have definitely changed! For example, what is going on with Leicester?! Let’s see what to expect with the past half-season in mind in each league.

What to Expect in the Knockout Round

The UEFA Champions League Draw!

The Group Stages of the UEFA Champions League have ended and so has the draw for the Knockout Rounds of the competition. With some surprising teams not making it to this round such as Manchester United and Valencia, let’s take a brief look at what we can expect in the upcoming fixtures of the tournament.

Benfica VS Zenit St. PetersburgAs expected, this isn’t one of the fixtures that caught many people’s attention but there is no doubt that it will still be a very interesting fixture. Both teams have been able to make it past their groups and now want to show that they are strong enough to make it to the quarter-finals of the competition itself. The question is: Who will make it?

Paris Saint-Germain VS ChelseaContrary to the previous match, this will be one of the most interesting ones in the Knockout Rounds. Paris-Saint Germain have been able to make it in second place to Real Madrid as Chelsea had to wait until the very last day to book their name in the competition. The English team have had a terrible season so far and they will want to show their competitiveness on the biggest stage while they still have a chance to.

KAA Gent VS WolfsburgOne of the lower profile games of this round, KAA Gent will be playing against Wolfsburg to book a place in the quarter-finals. Both teams are seen as underdogs in the UEFA Champions League but will want to make their voices heard and making it to the next round is a great way to do that!

AS Roma VS Real MadridThis is one of the games to watch in this round as both teams have had their ups and downs during this season but both of them still have a lot to offer. Roma will come out with their very best and will definitely want to infiltrate Real Madrid’s defense as the Spaniards have shown their faults many times this year.

Juventus VS Bayern MunichArguably the biggest game of this round, Juventus will need to do their very best to progress to the next round and cement their name as one of the best teams in the competition after also making it to the final last year. As for Bayern Munich, they will definitely come out prepared for the match but there is always the worry of complacency creeping in...

Arsenal VS BarcelonaAnother major fixture in this competition sees Arsenal take on Barcelona. The Spanish side have proven to be extremely strong for

any opposition this season but Arsenal will take their chances and anything will be possible. The English team have been doing fairly well so far and will need to step it up in order to beat a team such as Barcelona.

PSV Eindhoven VS Atletico MadridPSV Eindhoven were one of the shocks so far this season as they have been able to make it to the Knockout Rounds and now they prepare to play against Atletico Madrid. The Spaniards are very different to anyone else with their playing style and PSV will need to be extremely wary of that fact.

Dynamo Kyiv VS Manchester CityThe final game of this fixture sees Dynamo Kyiv take on Manchester City. The English team haven’t been great in the European stage in recent seasons and this game could prove to be helpful as they look towards the next round. With that said, it will be quite difficult to avoid complacency and they will still need to come out at their best on the night.

The 'Sometimes' Special One

Jose Mourinho

Many people around the world, especially Chelsea fans, were in a state of shock when Jose Mourinho was sacked as the manager of Chelsea. What I personally found shocking is that they were all surprised about this decision! Let’s take a look at who Mourinho is and why this has happened.

Less than one year ago, Jose Mourinho and Chelsea were celebrating with a trophy as they have just been crowned the Champions of the English Premier League. At that point, many people were looking at the club to become even greater in the coming year as it didn’t look like there was any other choice but to move upwards from there. With Mourinho in charge, you can’t really expect anything less than success.

Only eight months later, we see the same team fighting for relegation. Where did things go wrong though? How could a team with Jose Mourinho in charge be fighting for relegation? None of this makes sense. Well, if you decide

to look at it in just a little bit of depth, it all makes perfect sense.

Return to Chelsea:Jose Mourinho left Real Madrid after some trouble there in order to return to the club that he loves: Chelsea. As soon as he was appointed as manager for the second time, he made his intentions extremely clear and told everyone that he will be there for a very long time. For someone like Mourinho, a couple years is in fact a long time, I guess. Even though he has decided to dedicate many years to this club, there is only so much that can be done when the chairman has had enough of what he has been seeing.

Clashing With Players:We are talking about a manager who has been able to come out with some amazing success during his career but that has never been a reason for him to create unrest in the dressing room. During his time with Real Madrid, he has had problems with players such as Iker Casillas and Pepe while now it seems like there are players at Chelsea who are more than happy to see him walk towards the exit door.

Is he Ever the one to Blame? When Jose Mourinho wins, he takes the credit and states that he was able to read the game perfectly while using his players correctly to accomplish his hard work. When he loses, he

Page 53: StudenTalk #174 - January 2016

53

shifts the blame to “One possibility is that I did an amazing job last season and brought the players to a level that is not their level and now they can’t maintain it. One of my best qualities is to read the game for my players and I feel like my work was betrayed” he told Sky Sports. Well, at least he was able to comment on something this time. We have heard the words “No comment” from the Portuguese manager more than enough times.

What’s Next for Jose Mourinho?Jose Mourinho was never a man for just sitting back and relaxing and this time is no different. The manager has released a statement which stated that he will in fact be looking for another

job and is ready to take on any possible challenge that comes his way. Furthermore, it seems as though he will want to be staying in England and it is becoming increasingly possible that his next job will be with Manchester United.

What Next for Chelsea?Chelsea have a massive mountain to climb and they have given that responsibility to Guus Hiddink, a Dutch football manager, who has now been able to take over at Chelsea for the second time in his career.

He has signed a contract until the end of the season and we will just have to wait and see how thing play out from here.

From 'Zucknet' to 'Facebook'

Mark Zuckerberg

One of the world’s youngest billionaires, Mark Zuckerberg, was born on May 19, 1984 in New York as he quickly developed interest in computers at a very young age. With that, he was able to create a few things during his time before eventually coming out with ‘Facebook’. The question is: How did he reach this point?

Now, there are the obvious points of hard work and dedication but that isn’t what Mark Zuckerberg was really doing in the beginning of it all. He is a person who was always fascinated by computers and, of course, hacking. With those two skills mastered, it didn’t take him too long to realize that he was able to create new things online as well. His first venture was when he was about 12-years-old as he used Atari BASIC to create a new messaging program known as ‘Zucknet’, which his father used in his dental office so that the receptionist can inform him of a new patient or any developments without having to write things down or even yell across the room.

With that on the side, Mark Zuckerberg also created many quick computer games just for fun with his friends. They were mostly artists and therefore they used to go to his place and draw stuff and then he built games out of it.

With someone that has the mind of Zuckerberg, it was no surprise to see him enrolling at Harvard University and he quickly developed a reputation as the go-to person for software developing on campus. How? Well, he created a program called CourseMatch, which helped students choose their classes based on the course selections of other users.

Page 57: StudenTalk #174 - January 2016

أخبار

57

Furthermore, he also invented Facemash, which compared the pictures of two students on campus and allowed the users to vote on which one was more attractive. Even though it became extremely popular, it was later shut down by the school administration due to it being deemed inappropriate.

After looking at all the things that he worked with in the past, he had three other students who looked to him in order to start a new social networking site that was first called Harvard Connection. It was made to use information from Harvard’s student networks to create a dating site for the students. Zuckerberg helped but left to create a new social networking site that would be the one to make him the man he is today.

Facebook, originally called “The Facebook”, was created to allow users to make their own profiles, upload photos, and communicate with others. This was all made out of a dorm room at Harvard until 2004, when he dropped out of college to devote his full time to Facebook and move the company to Palo Alto. At the end of 2004, Facebook had one million users…

With all his success, there is no denying that he faced some trouble along the way. In 2006, the creators of Harvard Connection claimed that Zuckerberg actually stole the idea and insisted that he should pay for their business losses. Zuckerberg insisted that the ideas were based on two different networks but it has been proven that he may have intentionally stolen the intellectual property of Harvard Connection and offered Facebook users’ private information to his friends.

Furthermore, he faced another personal challenge in 2009 with the book The Accidental Billionaires, as the author was heavily criticized for re-telling Zuckerberg’s story with invented scenes and fictional characters. He also sold the rights of the book to screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and the film The Social Network.

Mark Zuckerberg has reached the point that he is at today through hard work, yes. With that said, he didn’t always expect things to work right away. Trials and many other programs were created first before he finally found the one to make it all work. Don’t give up on the dreams that you have no matter how difficult it may be right now. Keep working and you never know, one day you could be the next Mark Zuckerberg!

With her album, ‘25’, Adele has broken numerous records as she continues to show that she is still one of the greatest artists around even after she hasn’t released a single song in three years! This album sold 3.38 million copies during the first week of its release as the we say ‘Bye Bye Bye’ to the old record holders, NSYNC, who held it since 2000. Not only that, but this record was broken in only three days. Even before the album was officially released, Adele broke her first record with the single, ‘Hello’, as it was the first time that a single track had more than one million downloads in one week. To make it a little bit clearer, the previous record holder was Flo Rida with his song ‘Right Round’, which was less than half of Adele’s numbers!

The album, ‘25’, sold more than one million copies two weeks in a row and there is no denying the influence that Adele is having in the music industry. For a woman who has not released a song in approximately three years, it wouldn’t have been surprising if people forgot about her music. In fact, it was the complete opposite as some of her best sellers such as ‘Someone Like You’ and ‘Rolling in the Deep’ were still listened to by millions of people as even more awaited the day that ‘Hello’ was

How far can Adele & Justin Bieber go!?

released to get their chance to listen to the new song.

Now we take a look at Justin Bieber who has been able to come out with songs that are no longer criticized as music for “teenagers” as many of his music now are being listened to by people of all different ages. The ‘Beliebers’ are definitely increasing and there is no denying that Justin Bieber is an artist who knows exactly what he is doing.

With all that said, Justin Bieber broke a 51-year-old record set by one of the most iconic bands in history, The Beatles. The Beatles have had the most songs land on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in the same week for the past 51 years. Justin Bieber recently had 17 songs make Billboard’s December 5 Hot 100 chart in a single week, beating out The Beatles’ record of 14 songs, which they broke in 1964. Drake was the first to match The Beatles’ record this past March and again in October, Billboard reported -- but Bieber is the first to surpass it!

There is no predicting how far Adele and Justin Bieber can go and it is a great experience for all of us to be able to witness history in the making.

Adele released her highly-anticipated third album, ‘25’, which features songs such as ‘Hello’ and ‘When We Were Young’ as Justin Bieber broke records with his album, ‘Purpose’, as we heard some great music from him such as ‘Sorry’ and ‘Love Yourself’.

In the Car Museum City Kuwait Historical, Vintage & Classic Cars Museum

Porsche Road Safety Program

The Porsche Road Safety Program for Schools has been developed in support of the World Health Organization and the United Nations Global Decade of Action (2011-2021) on Road and Traffic Safety and has been supported by the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Education.

Now in its fourth year, a new and exciting partnership between Porsche Centre Kuwait, Behbehani Motors Company and the Kuwait Historical, Vintage & Classic Cars Museum has been established to provide state of the art facilities and a new educational program for 2016.

This partnership represents the commitment by Porsche Centre Kuwait, Behbehani Motors Company and the Historic, Vintage & Classic Car Museum to provide a high quality educational experience which allows the simulation of real-life driving scenarios. Students will participate in a practical, fun filled and informative visit to the Car Museum City where they are introduced to essential traffic and road safety skills.

To date, over 30,000 young children have participated in the Porsche Road Safety Program from schools throughout Kuwait, both government and private, and a further 10,000 young children are expected to attend during 2016.

Road accidents are the biggest single cause of accidental injury amongst children, comprising almost half of all fatalities. By encouraging teachers and parents to be involved and including road safety education on a regular basis, children will gain a better understanding of keeping safe. The earlier children begin to learn this, the better chance we have of keeping them safe. A curriculum guide will be presented to all participating schools and nurseries, enabling the integration of road safety education within existing curriculum topics and providing continuous reinforcement of the ‘Golden Rules’ of road safety.

Research shows that young children form attitudes that will shape their behaviour and future choices later in life. Through the Porsche Road Safety program we are able to target children during these formative years, to help them think about driving responsibly and staying safe on the roads from a young age, which can have a direct impact on their future behaviour.

Mike Finn, the Program Director commented, “Feedback from participating schools and parents has confirmed that students attending the program are learning to be responsible drivers, passengers and pedestrians and have shared their learning experience with adult drivers and other family members. Many parents have been delighted to inform us that their children now insist on wearing a seat belt and are following the ‘Golden Rules’ of road safety.”

The program is delivered by a team of experienced Early Years educators. During their visit each child will:

• Learn to drive a Porsche 911 Carrera pedal car safely around the specially designed indoor road circuit in Car Museum City, complete with working traffic lights, roundabout, junctions, speed bumps and a pedestrian crossing

• Learn the Golden Rules of Road Safety through a classroom and video presentation

• Identify, understand and act upon a variety of road traffic signs

• Receive the Porsche Road Safety student activity book for follow up work

• Receive the Porsche Parent Guide to Road Safety

• Receive a free Porsche driver’s cap, driving license and certificate upon successful completion of the visit

• Visit the Kuwait Historical, Vintage & Classic Cars Museum

Schools and nurseries are invited to participate in this program free of charge. Instruction is available in English or Arabic and visits can be scheduled, subject to availability, by contacting the Program Manager, Aisha Arikat, on 99826552 or e-mailing: [email protected]

In-store launch of a new conceptThe new façade of the Korloff Paris Boutique offers shimmering columns of astrakhan which highlight the flagship collection of the brand.

The space of the store has been enlarged by combining two main areas:Jewelry collections presented in large elongated wall units in black and white lacquer, enhanced by outstanding bright red color bases.

A VIP area has been created for our prestigious guests, with special counters displaying the entire solitaires and special Korloff diamonds ranges. Designer chandeliers impart a warm, intimate atmosphere to the VIP room, where privacy can be ensured.

Video screens both inside the boutique and outside in the main façade present the latest films created by the brand: a transparent LCD screen shows the inside of the outstanding Voyageur reversible watch, revealing a 5-carat solitaire when the film magically disappears. Overall, our French designer has given priority to a luxury environment with pure lines: a smart mix of curves and straight lines, with light effects for the wall showcases.

Dumond was inspired by secret gardens to celebrate winter. The absence of light brings a darker side to the collection while the delicacy of colors and flowers give a ladylike touch to the shoes and accessories. The most obscure side appears in the Victorian boots that appear to win their place in fashionista’s hearts. With low shafts, medium heels, shoelaces and pointy toes, the shoe merges classic and modern features.

Cleated soles, in turn, accompany heavy boots with fur appliqués. Perfect for the cold weather. The comfortable boyish style is one of women’s passions. Oxfords and loafers got delicate details to be an even greater feast for women’s eyes.

Sneakers established themselves as the choice for a cooler, more athletic look and appear with slip-on flats in versions with tall shafts, metallic elements and animal prints. They also appear with higher soles than the version that took over the streets this summer. White appears prominently and prints the athletic style to the shoes even more. The famous fringes of boho in its chic version return to the collection both in the children’s and in the adult line.

Dumond’s sweetest and more feminine side features crocodile prints, which will take over winter in shoes and bags.

Over-the-knee boots return to the fashion scene and add a pinch of power to the look. Traditional pointy-toe pumps never go out of fashion and are part of the brand’s winter collection. Dumond chose a color palette filled with black, caramel and purple. They became even more vivid with a varnish finish – highlight of the collection.

Thin-strap sandals add delicacy to the outfits. Sweet or dark – which is your side?

Treat yourself to the latest collection at The Mall, The Avenues.

FALKEN Competition

December's ''Coolest Adventurer''

The Winner for the

December 2015FALKEN Competition:

Farah Ghanayem

Tell us about yourself. My name is Farah Ghanayem and I am a student at the American University of Kuwait. I am the type of person who loves going to different places and trying out new things whenever I get the opportunity to do so. Furthermore, there are many different things that I want to try and hopefully I will get the chance to do them soon!

From the places you have been to, what is your favorite country to visit?I would have to say it was Palestine. Even though I have been to different places, home is always where I love to be! I grew up in Kuwait but that doesn’t erase the feeling of visiting the country that you are from. In Palestine, there are so many different places and different activities that you can do while you’re there and that guarantees that you’re never bored.

If you can visit one country you haven’t been to yet, which would it be? Why?I would definitely want to visit New York because it is simply a place that I always wanted to live in. I love the environment and it is definitely a place that I see myself living in at some point in the future.

What do you consider your craziest adventure?I think that the craziest and most memorable thing that I have done so far was sky diving! It was an experience that I will never forget and, even though it was really scary for me at the time, once you are at peace with the fact that you’re in the air, you begin to simply cherish every moment of it. There is no feeling like that.

What is one high-risk adventure you would still like to do?I wouldn’t say that there is only one adventure that I want to do mainly because I just like to try out new things whether it was a minor or major adventure. Sky diving was one of the major ones of course and it is something that I would love to do again at least one time.

Any last words for our readers?Try things and take risks. You go through life with a lot of pressure and stress whether it was with family or studies and therefore it is good to just take your mind off it all and do something for yourself. Enjoy every moment.

In collaboration with FALKEN, we are on a quest to find the coolest students on campus across different categories, with the winner of last month getting free FALKEN tires (2nos) on their car! Last months’ category was “Coolest Adventurer”. According to your votes online, Farah Ghanayem was your favorite!

Your new year will start with a bang! With that said put your impatience to the side and take every piece of advice as it comes and do whatever you can not to ignore anything as it could prove to be very helpful.

Capricorn Man:No matter what you do, do not underestimate a male Capricorn. He may appear like the calmest person in the world but his brain is on overtime! He is determined, ambitious, and practical: Three traits that best describe the males from this zodiac.

Capricorn Woman:A Capricorn woman is one of the most ambitious people you will ever see. Don’t be surprised to see some of the top management in companies being women from this zodiac. She is incredibly tough and ready to encounter any and every problem coming her way.

Finances should be on the top of your mind this month as you will need to arrange all your finances as soon as possible. Know that is important and what is not to have a good and helpful beginning to your new year.

Think before you act! That is the one thing that should be in your mind throughout the first month of 2016. Energy and enthusiasm could get the best of you so try to use that energetic attitude wisely as the month progresses.

Changes will need to be made but this is expected to be a fruitful start to your new year. A lot of big things await and you will need to be prepared to handle everything that will be coming your way this month.

Take full control and make the needed decisions in your life. This is the first month of the new year and therefore having things in order as it begins will make the rest of the year a lot easier for you and those around you.

This year begins with you in a great and optimistic mood. Things seem easier as you find better ways to get your point across to certain people. Make sure you keep all of this in mind and continue improving in the upcoming months.

Work out any complicated issues as soon as you possibly can while keeping in mind that the attention to detail is vital. The motto for you this month is ‘take care of the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves”.

Think before you speak. You need to pay close attention to how you bring your words across to other people as it can easily be very misunderstood. It is a very busy month with you but take the time to gather your thoughts.

Be concerned about the things you see more than the things that you don’t. Don’t try to look too deeply into things as it will only cause more harm than good. Make any important decisions now in order to avoid any unnecessary trouble later on.

Stop. Re-think. Think again. Nothing is set in stone now so don’t be afraid to make any last minute changes that may come up. It’s a month of decisions and therefore do everything in your power to make sure the decisions are correct.

It is a hectic beginning to the New Year for you but do not let that discourage you from the important things. Try not to put yourself in any stressful situations, especially concerning others. This is a month for yourself to work on the things that have been waiting.

Complacency and the tendency to assume things is your biggest problem this January. You must carefully make lists and tick things off. This will prove to be very helpful as the year progresses for you.
