TO GRADUATION AND BEYOND

“MNIC has changed my life in so many ways. I am a better person because of the love and caring people at MNIC. I don’t know what I would have done without MNIC. I wouldn’t have wanted to graduate from any other school”. —A.F. Spring 2013 MNIC graduate

July 22, 2016

Dear student or family member,

Welcome to the Minnesota Internship Center (MNIC), your school for the 2016-2017 school year! We are pleased you have chosen to join us. We believe MNIC is more than a school—not only do we provide excellent academic programs; we have a unique set of services for the family. That includes employment services, housing assistance and much more.

We are excited for this new school year in a new school with you or your child as our student. MNIC is in its 14th year, and we have many exciting programs at several Minneapolis and St. Paul sites. We will have a number of family events coming up during the year and we hope to meet all of you. If you have questions or would like more information, please call me at the number below. See you soon!

Sincerely,

Kevin Byrne Executive Director

What are Charter Schools?

Charter schools are public schools of choice that operate with freedom from some of the regulations

that apply to traditional public schools. The "charter" establishing each such school is a performance

contract detailing the school's mission, program, goals, students served, methods of assessment,

and ways to measure success. Charter schools are accountable to their sponsor—usually a local

school board or a non-profit organization—to produce positive academic results and adhere to the

charter contract. The Minnesota Internship Center Charter School is sponsored by Pillsbury United

Communities, an organization that’s been serving Minneapolis for 120 years.

Benefits: Charter schools benefit children and parents by:

o Increasing opportunities for learning and access to quality education for all students

o Creating choice for parents and students within the public school system

o Providing a system of accountability for results in public education

o Encouraging innovative teaching practices

o Creating new professional opportunities for teachers

o Encouraging community and parent involvement in public education

Parents and teachers choose charter schools primarily for educational reasons--high academic

standards, small class size, innovative approaches, or educational philosophies in line with their

own.

Brief History: In 1991 Minnesota passed the first charter school law, with California following suit in

1992. Charter schools are one of the fastest growing innovations in education policy, enjoying broad

bipartisan support from governors and state legislators. There are nearly 2,700 approved charter

schools in the US (over 100 in Minnesota, including the Minnesota Internship Center Charter

School).

How to Enroll in MNIC: Students between the ages of 15 and 20 who have not graduated from high

school can earn their diploma and receive career training at the Minnesota Internship Center. There

is no fee or tuition for eligible students. For more information or to register: call 612-584-0170. Our

main office number is 612-722-5416.
