Attention Seniors ~ October Responsibilities

Review the Northern Highlands SENIOR PACKET for procedural details concerning the application process; fill out

required forms.

Consult NAVIANCE, which provides a description of how well former Highlanders have fared in the admissions pro-

cess.

If applicable, prepare to take either the SAT or SAT Subject Test in October or November, or the ACT in October.

October is best for those going ED or EA.

See the 2015 Edition of the College Handbook for information on items like: schools which feature LD programs,

schools known for certain majors and ED/EA deadlines by school.

If you have not done so already, narrow your list of colleges and include safe, realistic, as well as challenging options.

Apply early, and ask teachers for recommendations at least three weeks in advance of your application. Follow the

procedure outlined in the Senior Packet. Do not forget to send teachers a thank you note.

Have standardized test scores sent to the colleges to which you are applying. All colleges require an official score

report sent directly from the College Board at www.collegeboard.com or ACT at www.actstudent.org.

Refrain from submitting more than one application under an early decision plan, and, if admitted under such a plan,

comply with all institutional guidelines including those regarding the obligations to enroll; refrain from submitting

subsequent applications.

Sign only one early decision agreement.

If accepted Early Action, you have until May to make a decision.

Once you decide to accept an offer, notify other institutions that you are withdrawing your application.

Be the sole author of your applications and essays, and avoid inappropriate assistance from others.

What is Mindfulness?

According to Psychology Today, “Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present. When you're mindful,

you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judging them good or bad. Instead of letting your life

pass you by, mindfulness means living in the moment and awakening to experience.?

Jon Kabat-Zinn, the biologist who first coined the term “mindfulness” in the ’70s, defines it as a state of mind: the act

of “paying attention on purpose” to the present moment, with a “non-judgmental” attitude. It was Kabat-Zinn who

first formally brought mindfulness into a medical setting; he developed the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

(MBSR) program, which used specific exercises to help patients dealing with chronic pain and is now widely applied in

other therapeutic contexts. He also founded the Center for Mindfulness at UMass Medical School.

The body of scientific research illustrating the positive effects of mindfulness training on mental health and well-

being—at the level of the brain as well as at the level of behavior—grows steadily more well-established. It improves

attention, reduces stress, and results in better emotional regulation and an improved capacity for compassion and em-

pathy. Brain-imaging studies at Harvard and Mass General Hospital have shown that long term mindfulness training

can help thicken the cortical regions related to attention and sensory processing and offset thinning of those areas that

typically comes with aging. Mindfulness is widely considered effective in psychotherapy as a treatment not just for

adults, but also for children and adolescents with aggression, ADHD, or anxiety.

Useful Apps

Calm Counter - Good to use for students who need a visual to focus on when they need a

moment to cool down.

A friendly, simple tool to guide people of all ages and backgrounds through meditations for

mindfulness and compassion.

Students can drag their fingers through the “sand” like a rake, which could be calming for some.

Costs a dollar, but it helps narrow down the stream of scholarships and it was designed by a

school counselor!

This app was developed by the College Admission Examination Board (makers of the SAT) and

allows students to answer a new practice SAT question every day.

Kaplan ACT® Quiz U allows you to squeeze serious ACT prep into your busy schedule. Get real

practice ACT questions in timed mini quizzes, helping you study the most valuable, score-raising

topics in ACT English, ACT Math, ACT Reading and ACT Science.

GENESIS WILL OPEN ON OCTOBER 16

Progress reports and grade book assignments for the first semester marking period will be available begin-

ning on October 16, 2015. The Genesis Parent Module will then remain open for the remainder of the 2015-2016

school year.

PARENT ALERT SET-UP

In an effort to make parent notifications more efficient, as well as save valuable time and energy associated

with the amount of mailings from the school, Northern Highlands sends Attendance, Discipline, Fines, and

other letters home electronically through the Genesis Parent Portal feature. In order to do this, we ask that

you turn on "Alerts" so that you will be automatically notified via email or text, when a letter has been posted

to your child's Genesis account. Once you log into Genesis, please do the following:

Click on the "HOME" tab on the center right of the screen.

Click on "Message Alert Setup" and select the email and/or text address to which you would like alerts to be

posted. You may do this by putting a check mark in the appropriate box(es), then click on "Save Notification

Preferences."

Once this is complete, you will then get an alert to log into the Parent Portal each time a letter from Northern

Highlands is posted for your child. If you have any questions, concerns, or difficulties, please feel free to con-

tact Michael Koth at (201) 327-8700 ext. 201 or Richard Smith at (201) 327-8700 ext. 279.

11 Student Services Bulletin

From the desk of the Assistant Principal

The Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act (P.L.2010, c.122) requires that the week begin-ning with the first Monday in October (October 5-9, 2015) be designated as a “Week of Respect” in New Jersey. School districts across the state are required to observe the week in order to recognize the importance of character education. In recognition of this week, Northern Highlands is embarking upon a campaign that asks students to “Think Before You Speak,” stressing the proper use of vocab-ulary and to consider the feelings of others when engaging in dialogue. We also ask that parents help support this cause as well. In order to do so, parents should be aware that most events that the school becomes aware of happen through misuse of social media. We are all aware that inappropriate comments over Face-book or via text message can have long lasting negative effects. In addition we will conduct a student assembly to commemorate the Week of Re-spect and the 50th Anniversary of Northern Highlands. We are honored and humbled to host our most famous and distinguished alumnus, Federal Bureau of Investigation Director, James Comey (Class of 1978) on Monday, October 5, 2015. Director Comey will address students in a town hall style meeting in which he will extol the virtues of civic and social responsibility, the importance of com-munity involvement, and what his experience at Northern Highlands means to him. We look forward to the Director's visit!
