elements of Mexican culture,

such as the traditional folk art of Oaxacan carving

small wooden animals called juguetes. Swazzle bringsMateo’s whimsical, brightly colored juguetes to life

through masterful puppetry in this 55-minute,bilingual performance that inspires students to

think creatively, try new things, and followtheir dreams!

account of Little Cloud’s travels through the sky; and The Mixed-Up Chameleon’s discovery of his own unique nature. Students

learn about life cycles, physical systems, and earth sciences whileexperiencing these beloved stories that have encouraged literacy

and a love of reading for generations!

The Kennedy CenTer ParTners in eduCaTion Program

Since 2001, the Lied Center has collaborated with the Umonhon Nation

School (Macy), Nebraska and with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s

College of Education and Human Sciences (Lincoln) to develop

ongoing professional development for K–12 teachers. A planning teamdevelops program objectives annually and meets quarterly to plan

activities, review goals, evaluate progress, and celebrate success.

Research results were recently featured in a national publication as

one of six success stories selected from more than 100 Kennedy Center

Partner in Education programs.

The Kennedy Center National Partnership Program assists arts

organizations throughout the nation in developing educational

partnership with their local school systems. The purpose is to establish or expand professional development programs in the arts for all teachers.

The program is based on the belief that educating teachers is an essential

component of any effort designed to increase the artistic literacy of

young people.

K–12 TeaChers and TeaChing arTisT worKshoPs

The arts are effective tools for teaching core subjects such as math,science and reading/language arts. Through this approach all teachers

learn how to engage students using arts integrated strategies, directly

addressing school and students needs in literacy, computation, fuency

as well as critical thinking and problem solving ski lls. Addressing K–12

national and state education standards in the arts and core subjects is

an essential aspect of this approach.
