Pat Burleson is a Fort Worth native who has enjoyed a martial arts career that spans over 50 years. He started out as a boxer and became a boxing champion before he began his journey in the martial arts. He was the first U.S. National Karate Champion and has instructed major celebrities, performed in television, and films, and conducted motivational seminars. Even with all that, what you will notice, first, is that he loves the Lord. He believes that God’s word, the Bible, is the cornerstone of a successful family. The Christian Soldiersprogram has a dual emphasis on Bible study and self-defense with the goal of developing strong faith and strong bodies for Christ. television, and films, and conducted motivational seminars. Even with all that,

what you will notice, first, is that he loves the Lord. He believes that God’s word,

paperwork in a three ring binder.

This will become your record of Martial Arts training and contains the

Terminology Used

The American Karate System as developed by Grandmaster J. Pat Burleson

consists of techniques and elements from a broad range of martial arts styles. The

term “Karate” is Japanese and means open hand. Our American Karate has

incorporated many techniques and forms from “Tae Kwon Do,” which means to

kick or mash with feet or hands in Korean.

Korean commands used during our classes:

Chario (Attention) – Stand up straight without moving, heels together with

arms and hands at your sides, looking straight ahead. The right foot is stationary.

Shio (At Ease) – Both hands are behind your lower back. Relax with feet

shoulder width apart. From Chario, you move the left foot out.

Kyungee (Bow) – Eyes are looking straight ahead or at the individual you are

bowing to. Bow 45 degrees at the hip.

Shejak (Begin) – Command to start training.

Joonbee (Ready) – Stance at the beginning or conclusion of formal training

and katas. Feet are shoulder width apart, fists presented in front or the hips.

Goman (End) - Command to conclude formal training at the end of a kata or

technique and resume the Joonbee stance.

Japanese terms used in our classes:

Dojo The place of training

Gi Your karate uniform

Kata (Form) – Choreographed martial arts routine that builds concentration

through imagery and physical training.

Kiai A shout from the pit of the stomach.

Dress Code

All participants wear a traditional white gi (uniform) with the Christian Soldiers™

Logo on the back. It should be clean and neat at all times, as a sign of respect to

the art, your instructor and fellow students.

Brown belts and above may wear different color uniforms and students who

demonstrate commitment to the program and with the approval of their instructor

may wear red or blue gis.

The traditional white uniform must be worn at all formal testing events. No

Exceptions. White symbolizes purity and that we are all fundamentally the same.

Pants should be hemmed or cuffed so they do not cover the top of your foot. The

gi jacket sleeves may be rolled up and should not cover your wrist.

Instructors may allow you to remove gi jackets and wear t-shirts when it’s hot.

Belts are to be worn and tied in a square knot with the arrow pointing to the

wearer’s right, stripes will be on the wearer’s left.

Students who do not have the appropriate uniform will be last in the line up.

He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his

name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and

before His angels.

Let’s Line Up

You will be called to “Line Up” at the beginning and end of each class. The Line

Up is determined as follows:

1. Rank - The highest belt rank is on the left. If there is more than one row,

the highest belt rank is in the back row on the left.

2. Stripes - If you are the same belt rank, those with blue stripes are to the left of

those with red and white stripes only and the student with red and

white stripes is to the left of those with only a red stripe. Any other

stripes do not apply to the line up position.

3. Height - All else being equal the taller student will be on the left.

There is no talking. You should be in the Shio position ready for class to begin.

The instructor will ask the ranking student to call the class to attention with the

command “Chario.” At the beginning and end of each class the response will be

“In Jesus Name!” The ranking student will give the command “Kyungee” which is

a bow of respect between instructors and students and you will respond “Yes Sir or

Maam”. The instructor will then give the command “Shio” and your response is

“Yes Sir or Maam.”

General Class Ettiquette

The Customary Bow, Kyungee:

All Black belts and instructors as a form of respect

Address all instructors and staff as Sir / Ma’am or Mr. / Ms.

As you enter or exit the dojo or place of training mat area.

Respond to your instructor in a loud, clear voice and always with respect. If you

have question, raise your hand and wait to be addressed.

Never contradict or correct your instructor while on the mat. Discuss the issue

privately after class.

Do not offer instruction to other students unless asked to do so by your instructor.

Excellent behavior is expected at all times.

No profanity or horseplay.

Do not leave the mat area during class unless instructed to do so.

Speak to your parents and other adults with respect.

Class starts on time, so please be early and ready to participate.

No jewelry and hair should be secured back.

No food or gum in the training area.

No shoes on the mat or training area.

Spectators are always welcome during class sessions and we welcome applause.

Please remove crying siblings during class sessions.

Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God,

Advancement

Advancement testing and credentials are provided through the World Martial Arts

Ranking Association (WMARA). Only WMARA credentials will be recognized.

Christian Soldiers™ differs from secular programs because we include Bible study

as a requirement for advancement. Every student should strive to develop the

qualities mentioned in 2 Peter. Make every effort to add to your faith

goodness; Look for the good in all things.

and to goodness, knowledge; Learn all you can.

and to knowledge, self-control; Never lose your temper.

and to self-control, perseverance; Never give up.

and to perseverance, godliness; Strive to be like Christ.

and to godliness, brotherly kindness; Never be a bully or a braggart.

Curriculum requirements include:

Character Building – you will complete character requirements for each belt.

Bible Study – you will recite a memory verse and complete a worksheet for each

book of the Bible. You are also required to attend the class Bible study.

Basics - the fundamental techniques you will be build upon as you progress.

Kata – the traditional formal routines you will perfect.

Self-Defense – you will learn to protect yourself and escape from danger.

Public Speaking – you will present Bible verses of your choice at each belt test,

the Student Creed for green, verbal presentations for red-black and black belt tests.

Sparring – the training method to improve your techniques by testing them against

someone else’s techniques.

Board Breaking – to build self-confidence, it is a physical demonstration of

accuracy, speed and power to measure your progress in Karate.

Stripes

You will be recognized and receive stripes on your belt when you complete

character building and Bible study requirements and tournament participation.

All requirements must be completed at least two weeks prior to your test date.

You will receive a Red Stripe when you complete the Youth Enrichment Skills

(Yes™) program or character achievement form. You must have a Red stripe

before any other stripe is awarded.

You will receive a White Stripe when you complete the required Bible study and

memory verses for the next belt rank.

You will receive a Blue Stripe when your instructor feels you are ready to test for

the next belt level. Never ask to be striped or tested.

You will receive a Yellow Stripe when you compete in a Christian Soldiers™

tournament. Try to compete at least twice per calendar year.

Yin-Yang is a Chinese symbol used to represent contrasts and balance in Karate.

It is not a religious symbol.

Character Building

We place great emphasis on character building in Christian Soldiers™ Karate,

where you will develop and improve self-discipline, self-confidence and your

respect for others.

It is your responsibility to put forth the effort and practice the highest standard of

good character at all times. You will document character achievement at each belt

level in order to advance.

There are several methods you may choose from. The first is used typically for

younger students and is based on the YES™ program for character building skills.

Parents or partners take an active role to observe you, then complete and return the

evaluation form. Your parent or partner will determine the tasks and each task

should be done for at least a full week in order to earn points. You must earn at

least 12 points.

There is an optional form that your teacher may be asked to complete as well. Your

parent or partner will decide when you have demonstrated self-discipline and are

eligible to receive the Red Stripe.

Adult students typically use the Christian Soldiers™ Red Stripe Achievement

form. It is self-explanatory and your instructor will determine your eligibility for

the Red Stripe. These are valuable tools that we encourage you to use.

Basics

The basics are your fundamental techniques that you will build on as you progress

at each belt level.

Stances:

The Horse Stance is also called the straddle-leg stance. One foot slides out

smoothly to the side in a straight line until both feet are double shoulder’s width

apart.

The Back Stance will be to one side or the other with your torso facing forward.

Your feet will form an “L” with most of the body weight resting on the rear leg.

You should be able to lift the front leg off the floor without losing balance.

Punches:

For your Front Punch open your hand with your fingers fully extended and

together. Now curl your fingers by bending at the middle joint, so that your fingers

meet the top of your palm. Bend your knuckles to curl the fingers toward the heel

of your palm. Lay your thumb over your fore and middle fingers. Keep your wrist

straight and strike with your fore and middle knuckles.

The Back Punch is similar to the Front Punch, but with the trailing hand and

torque motion from the hips.

Blocks:

For the Chop Block you will open your hand, as if you’ve placed it palm-down on

a desk with your fingers together. Bend and tuck your thumb completely under

your palm. Tense your hand, and starting from your opposite ear, strike coming

out across your body at a 45 degree angle, with your palm facing your body. Just

before coming in contact with the opponent, rotate your hand counter-clockwise in

a snapping motion, ending with your palm facing your opponent. The striking

surface is the outer blade or your forearm. The snapping motion at the end of the

strike will increase the power of your block.

For the Cross Block you will cross your hands at the wrists in front of the body

with fingers outstretched and palm up, thrust both hands slightly forward and up.

Wrists are straight and strong to stop a blow from above.

Kicks:

The Front Snap Kick is done by facing your opponent, raise the kicking leg with

your knee pointing at your opponent. Then kick out with the foot in a snapping

motion only using the ball of the foot, keeping the toes bent backwards and out of

harms way.

The Side Kick is executed with the opponent at your side, raise the kicking leg with

your knee pointing in front of you, lift your foot parallel to your knee and toward

your opponent. Then kick out with the foot in a snapping motion, using your heel

as the primary striking surface.

The Round Kick begins by bringing the knee around, with leg bent, in an arching

motion. Just before reaching the target, the foot snaps out horizontally using the

top of the foot as the striking surface.

Tips on Kicking

Take aim. Know where your opponent is and hit your target.

Relax. Don’t tense up your shoulders and arms.

Breathe. Holding your breath will interfere with balance and control.

Torque. Use your hips, that’s how you generate power.

Bend your standing leg. This is your shock absorber.

Kata

Katas are essentially routines with a theme where you defend yourself from

multiple imaginary opponents.

Katas have been handed down from generation to generation. Many of them were

created by people who actually had to defend themselves against repeated violent

attacks, and it would be hard to duplicate that experience today. In fact, until the

twentieth century, free sparring as we know it did not exist. Kata was the only

means masters had to transfer the essence of Karate and their interpretation of the

art to their students. The katas you will learn are primarily of Korean origin.

Kata is where you prefect your technique, balance, movement, breathing, timing

and focus. It is a very important part of your Karate training because you can learn

basics and sparring from kata, but you can’t learn kata from basics and sparring.

You will be taught kata when you have learned the required formal movements.

Kam-Sah is your first kata and it means gratitude and respect. It is not used in

competition other than Field Day

Toe-san is taught after attaining your purple belt. It is a series of techniques

designed to defend against multiple attacks and named for the Korean patriot Ah

Chang-Ho.

Yul-Gok is taught after attaining your brown belt. It includes tension blocks and

breathing. Yul-Gok represents a learned person and is named for the Korean

scholar and Philosopher Yi I.

Bas-Sai is taught after attaining your red belt. Bas-Sai means breaking into the

fortress and has Japanese origins.

All katas must be perfected and formally cleared before advancing to black belt.

There are three optional katas, Won-Hyo, Hwa-Rang, Chung-Mu, that may be

performed at competitions.

Kam-Sah means gratitude and respect.

Normally the entire class will perform as a group as it is called out in 10 counts by

your instructor.

Movement Imagery

1. Cross Block, left foot out. You see an attack coming from the

front with a crashing blow.

2. Look left, fold left hand for Chop Block You see an opponent attacking on

your left side.

3. Step to Back Stance, Chop Block You block the incoming attack.

4. Back punch, left hand stays in place. You counter and protect your head

from attack from the side.

5. Look right, fold right hand for Chop You see an opponent attacking from

Block, adjust right foot. your right side.

6. Step to Back Stance, Chop Block You block the incoming attack.

7. Back punch, right hand stays in place. You counter and protect your head.

8. Look to the front, adjust your right foot, You see an opponent attacking from

chamber your fists and Cross Block. the front with a crashing blow.

9. Chario – attention position

10. Kyungee – you respond “Thank you sir or ma’am”

Self-Defense

Self-defense is a very important aspect of Karate training and you will learn how to

protect yourself from danger. Consider what we are taught in Proverbs 2:11-12

Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. Wisdom will save

you from the ways of wicked men… Based on scripture you must be aware of your

surroundings (discretion), think quickly (understand) and be prepared (guard).

Our first line of defense is always to get away from the threat.

Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way. Proverbs 4:15

If you can’t get away then shout as loud as you can for help.

Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise her voice?

Proverbs 8:1

Ask for help from a policeman, fireman, teacher or babysitter.

Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have understanding and power.

Proverbs 8:14

Think and stay calm.

The lips of the righteous know what is fitting… Proverbs 10:32

Your last resort is to defend yourself.

You will learn techniques, at each belt level, to free yourself from grabs and holds

by working against an attacker’s power and vulnerable points.

Public Speaking

Public speaking is the number one fear in America. Death is the second. John 3:16

assures us that we have no need to fear death "For God so loved the world that he

gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have

eternal life.”

You’ll have the opportunity to speak and pray in a safe and nurturing environment.

As you gain self-confidence you will be able to speak the word of God boldly.

Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. 2 Corinthians 3:12

The Student Creed should always be recited in a strong, confident voice. The last

line should always be followed with Sir or Ma’am.

Sparring

You may only participate in sparring if you have the proper safety gear.

Sparring is not fighting. It is practice for fighting. Your sparring partner is not

your enemy. They are someone who is trying to improve themselves and their

techniques, just like you are. Always bow and show respect to your partner before

beginning any exercise.

The introduction of rhythm sparring teaches offensive and defensive combinations,

develops your reflexes and prepares you for free sparring. Initially there is no

contact. You will execute three offensive techniques while your partner is simply

moving away. Then your partner will execute three techniques while you move

away. This should be done without hesitation in a steady rhythm.

Before you can make contact you must first find your range, how close you need to

be in order to hit your target. After you find your range, you will start punching a

target. If you have good form and technique you will have good power. When you

are punching a target you can use power, but when you are punching a person you

must learn to control that power.

Your instructor will show you how to control or pull your punches and kicks.

They mean the same thing. You must pull back before you exert your full force.

In half counter sparring your partner should always know exactly what you’re

going to do and when. Surprise hurts! You call out what you want your partner to

do and then defend and counter. For example, you call out, “front punch” they will

execute a front punch and you will block it and counter with a back punch.

When you have demonstrated control you instructor may allow you to free spar.

Free sparring develops your sense of distance and timing. You’ll learn to control

your feelings and emotions to focus and think under pressure.

Only light to medium contact is allowed to the upper body.

Only light contact is allowed to the head and groin areas.

Face contact is not permitted until the Brown Belt level.

For students 35 years or older requirements are reduced by 50 percent.

If you cannot control your anger, you are as helpless as a city without walls, open

to attack. Proverbs 25:28

Sparring Safety Gear Requirements

Sparring gear is required when a student reaches the rank of Gold Belt.

Safety comes first and protection is required to minimize the risk of injury to all

students. You must wear the gear listed as a minimum for any sparring activity:

Foam head protection with or without face guard

Foam hand and feet protection

Mouth piece

Athletic Cup for males

We strongly encourage chest, shin and arm protection. Bruises are inevitable, but

most of us have to go to work or school the next day.

Board Breaking

You can’t strike your practice partner with full power; that would cause injuries.

So boards are used.

Board Breaking actually has three purposes:

to demonstrate power – Breaking a one inch thick board is equivalent

breaking a person’s rib.

to demonstrate proper technique – A board won’t break unless your

technique is correctly applied.

to discipline the mind – It is a mental challenge more than a physical one

and boosts your self-confidence.

Do not attempt to break boards without instructor supervision.

You can practice target kicking and punching on a heavy bag. The heavy bag

doesn’t move with your kick or punch the way a sparring partner does. It just

hangs there. If you hit it hard, you might bounce off. This helps you learn to keep

yourself solid while you’re kicking and punching. You must kick the heavy bag

with accuracy and power to move it, instead of it moving you.

Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the

air. But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have

preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.

Teaching Requirements

Every student should do their best and strive to be a benefit to others. There is a

200 hour minimum teaching requirement in order to advance to the Black Belt

level. That does not mean that you wait until you’re a Red Belt to start teaching.

Nor does it mean you must become a certified instructor.

You may fill this requirement by assisting your instructor or other class instructors.

You may only assist when cleared to do so by the instructor.

It is your responsibility to keep track of your hours and document them on the

Teaching Hours Log. Don’t procrastinate. If you have a problem let your

instructor know and arrangements can be made with other classes or whatever may

be necessary.

them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them

Tournaments

Tournaments provide a positive and exciting format to test your skills. You have

the opportunity to grow spiritually and develop confidence in a safe environment.

You will earn points for your performance and participation. The highest point

totals in each division receive awards at the end of year banquet.

Each student is encouraged to compete in at least two tournaments per year. There

are four competitions: Field Day, Self-Defense, Kata, and Sparring

Field Day Competition – White Belt through Gold Belts

White Belt: 1. Public Speaking: Judges my name is …. My style is American

Karate, I represent… May I have your permission to begin sir/maam?

The judge will respond and you will recite a Bible verse (you may

explain what it means to you and why you chose it). Be confident.

2. Perform Kam-Sah. Beginners Basics- Kicks and punches.

Remember attitude. Execute these like you mean it!

3. Beginners Self-Defense and once again..... ATTITUDE.!!!!!!

Yellow Belt:1. Public Speaking (same as White Belt)

This is may be your first opportunity to speak in public. It’s natural to be nervous,

but you will be surrounded by fellow believers and instructors who all want to see

you succeed. You will receive a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place. The judges will rate your

effort and attitude.

traditional kata, Kam-Sah is not eligible. You will be scored on focus, attitude and

technique.

Point Sparring is open to all belt levels with instructor approval. There is

ABSOLUTELY NO EXCESSIVE CONTACT! Both aggressor and defender are

equally responsible. If you charge your opponent while they are kicking, you

could cause excessive contact on yourself, so be aware and be safe. Remember

that your opponent is your brother or sister in Christ. Exemplary sportsmanship is

expected and reflects of your character. Always show respect.

The Match will last two minutes:

Always obey the Official’s commands quickly.

You will be called to step into the ring on the line designated.

You will be instructed to bow to each other and the Official.

Tap Gloves (This is a gesture of good sportsmanship)

Return to the line and assume your fighting position

Should an injury occur, you will take a knee and wait for instructions.

We make every attempt to match belt levels. It depends on the number of

competitors. Points are adjusted when belt levels do not match. One point per

rank difference is added to lower belt score at the end of the match.

Scoring:

You score points by landing hand or foot techniques to a legal target area.

Hand techniques earn one point and foot techniques earn two points.

The Official will stop the match to make point calls. Never dispute a call.

The person with the most points after all adjustments is the winner.

Team Sparring

A team has three competitors and each will spar in a match. The composition will

depend upon the rules set for the event and may vary. Typically it will be an all

adult or all youth team. Adults and youth will not compete against each other.

The same rules apply as for point sparring, except the match will not be ended for a

five point lead. And the scores are combined for all three matches and the team

with the highest score is the victor.

Requirements for 1st Degree Black Belt - Adult

Your test for 1st degree Black Belt has two parts. Fifty percent of your grade is

physical ability. The other fifty percent is based on your character. What you are,

feel and think determine whether or not you can live up to the responsibility of

being a Black Belt. You must be committed to “drawing the line.”

Part One includes:

Complete Red Stripe requirements and do a minimum of one humanitarian

deed in the service of your community and document it in your test resume.

Complete 200 teaching hours and include your teaching log in your resume.

Complete White Stripe Requirements

You will demonstrate your basic and advanced techniques by performing the

required katas: Toe-San, Yul-Gok, and Bas-Sai. These must be cleared before

part two of your test will be scheduled.

Part Two must be completed within eight months after completing part one. You

may submit a formal written request for an extension up to 4 months due to

physical injury, illness, etc. otherwise, you must repeat part one.

Submit your type written Test Resume to the Testing Board at least three weeks

prior to your test. Your resume should include a record of your Karate history:

accomplishments, future personal goals and your goals in the Martial Arts. Include

a narrative on why you should be considered for Black Belt advancement.

Basics: All six counts and all formals

Self-Defense: Defend from any attack

Public Speaking: You will give a verbal presentation on any aspect of the Martial

Arts. You should be prepared to answer any questions asked by the Testing Board.

Board Breaking Techniques

Sparring: A number of single matches determined by the Testing Board and a

minimum of one multiple match or unlimited rounds of rhythm sparring.

The same requirements as an adult and you must maintain academic excellence in

your school work. A copy of the most recent academic evaluation will be included

in the test resume.

an adult Black Belt.
