GENERALSCHOOLINFORMATION

AboutUsBellLanguageSchoolhasbeenprovidingaffordablequalityEnglish-Languageinstructiontostudentssince1999.OurteachersarecertifiedbytheStateofNewYorkandarededicatedtotheirwork.Theirspecializedtrainingisfocusedoneffectivelyinstructinginternationalstudents.Bell Language School’s instructors utilize the best practices in the field of English Language instruction toimplementideasandresearch-basedinstructionalapproachesintheclassroom.Theseteachingstrategiesarebased on the guidelines set forth by the US Department of Education and CEA, including standards for:curriculum, instruction,and transition.English languageclassesaredelivered in culturally sensitive, real-lifecontexts using a comprehensive approach that recognizes variousmodalities of learning (visual, audio, andkinesthetic),andinteractiveteachingstrategies.Becauseour school is located in Brooklyn, our students enjoy lowapartment rentals, convenient access tobeaches,andneighborhoodsrichinhistoryandculturaldiversity.Travelingaroundthecity isnotaproblembecausepublictransportation iseasilyaccessibleandcantakeyoutoanyofthefiveboroughsofNewYorkCity, including Manhattan, which is located only 20 minutes from the school by public transportation.As soon as youwalk through the doors of Bell, youwill find a cozy and home-like atmosphere. ClassHoursandBreakTimesBellLanguageSchooloffersclasses3shiftsperday:Morning8:30am–12:15pmAfternoon1:00pm-4:45pmEvening6:00pm-9:45pmAllclassesaregiveninaccordancewiththeschoolschedule,availabletoeverystudentintheirhandbooks,onthewebsite,and throughout theschool.Classesare3hoursand45minutes in length;withone15-minutebreakinthemiddleoftheclass(10:00-10:15am/2:30-2:45pm/7:30-7:45pm).

ClassVisitorsBellLanguageSchooldoesnotallowanyonetovisittheclassroomsunlesstheyareregisteredandenrolledintheschoolorhaveexplicitwrittenpermissionfromtheschoolDirector.Visitorscoulddisrupttheeducationprocessoftheschooland isunfairtoenrolledstudents.Anyonewishingtosit inonaclassforanypurposemustfirstobtainwrittenpermissionfromtheschoolDirectortodoso.Theonlyexceptioncanbepeoplethataredirectlyobservingschoolactivitiesorclassroomstudyonbehalfofgoverningagenciessuchasemployeesfrom theNewYork State EducationDepartment, accrediting agencies, or officials from theUS ImmigrationDepartment.

LateArrivalBLSsessionsare6weeksinlength.Studentsshouldmakearrangementstocomeontimeforthestartoftheprogram. Bell Language School understands that unexpected situations happen; therefore, students thatarrivetoschoolduringthefirstweekofclassesorlaterareconsideredlatearrivals.Studentsmayregisterforaclassduringthefirst threeweeksof thesessionbut it ishighlyencouragedtomaketravelarrangementstoarriveontimeforthestartofthesession.Ifthestudent’snameisnotontheroster,theteacherwillsendthestudenttotheAdmissionsOfficetoobtaintheLateArrivalClassAdmissionForm.WhenthestudentbringstheLateArrivalClassAdmissionFormtotheteacher,theteacherwilladdthestudent’snametothebottomoftheclassrosterandattachtheformtotheroster.Teacherswillpayparticularattentiontolate-registrationstudentsandallowthemtocatchuponmissedworkbyallocatingmoretimetotheirneeds,whenreasonable.Thestudentswillbeprovidedwithaclasssyllabus,with topics that theyhavemissedspecified.Theywill alsobeprovidedwithany relevantclasshandoutsaswellaspreviouslyassignedhomework.Fromthere,itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytocompletetherequiredmaterial.Theteacherwillbeavailabletohelpstudentsiftheyhavequestionswhilecatchingup.

StudentAttendanceAttendanceisacrucialpartofacademicsuccessatBellLanguageSchool.Itisimportantforstudentsuccesstoattend and participate in each and every class. A student arriving during the middle of a lesson is verydisruptiveanddisrespectfultoeveryone,includingtheteacherandstudentsintheclass.Studentsareaskedtopleaserespecttheclasstimesandbeontimetoclass.Inaddition,immigrationrequirementsmandatethatstudentsmaintaintheirattendanceatacertainleveltoremain inactivestudent status. Notonly is it vital to student successandacademicprogress,but isalsoarequirementofUSCIS,forstudentstomaintainatleast80%attendanceinanygivensessioninorderthatthestudentmaymaintaingoodacademicstandingandimmigrationstatus.Thismeansthatstudentscannotmissmorethan6classespersession.Attendanceistakentwiceperclass-15minutesaftertheclassstartsand15minutesbeforetheclassends.Ifastudent is more than 15 minutes late to the beginning of class before or after break, the student is not

CompletionUpon completion of the program, a student should complete all the required paperwork and obtain aTranscriptor/andCertificateofCompletion.

CertificatesofCompletion/TranscriptsBellLanguageSchoolprovidesnon-creditcourses.In order to get a Certificate of Completion, students must successfully complete all Bell Language Schoolclasses that theywere registered for. Successful completionofaclassmeans thata studentpassedall thetests and satisfied the 80% attendance requirements. The following factors also contribute to a student’seligibilitytoobtainaCertificateofCompletion:

• F-1 students that are eligible for transfer to another school are also eligible for a Certificate ofCompletion

• Ifastudent’svisawascancelled/terminatedforanyreason,youareonlyeligibleforatranscriptandaschoolletterconfirmingdatesofattendanceatBellLanguageSchool

WithdrawalsIfyouneedtowithdrawandstopyourstudiesatBellLanguageSchool,pleasenotifytheAdmissionsOfficeandtheDSOinwritingaboutyourintentandreasonbehindyourwithdrawal.Therearetwotypesofwithdrawal:-AuthorizedWithdrawal:Inordertogetanauthorizationtowithdrawtheschool,studentshavetosubmitanofficiallettertotheschool’sDSOandproperdocumentationandgetanapprovalfromDSO.StudentshavetomakesurethattheirSEVISisupdatedontimeand15daysgraceperiodisreceived.-UnauthorizedWithdrawalisunderstoodas“droppingout”ofschoolwithoutnotificationandauthorization.Students should be aware that they are jeopardizing their student visa and theywill have a “0” day graceperiod.InthiscasestudentsmustleavetheU.S.immediately.If students intend to leave the U.S. theymust provide the school Admissions Officewith proof of intent todepart,forexampleflightconfirmationorairlinetickets.

LeaveofAbsenceAleaveofabsenceistobegrantedonlyinextenuatingcircumstances,suchasanaccident,prolongedillness,maternityleave,thedeathofarelative,orextensivetravelabroad.ALeaveofAbsenceRequestFormmustbefilledout.LeaveofAbsenceisnotanauthorizedvacation.Sincestudentsaregivenabreakbetweeneverysession,noformalvacationistobegranted,unlessstudentsaretravelingabroadforanextensiveperiodoftime(airlinereservation confirmation is required). While staying in theUnited States, studentsmust follow the schoolacademiccalendar.Note:F-1StudentsmaynotstayoutsideoftheUnitedStatesformorethan5monthswhilekeepingtheirF-1Status.Insuchcases,studentsmustre-applyfortheirF-1VisaandobtainanewI-20Formfromtheschool.Allstudentsrequestingaleaveofabsencearerequiredtofilloutthisformandkeepincontactwiththeschoolforthedurationoftheirleave.

ReturningStudentsIfastudentleavesBellLanguageSchoolforaperiodofonesessionormore,youmayberequiredtobere-testedorbeplacedinalevelbasedonyourgradesfromthelastsessionyoucompleted.Students that have been dismissed based on a violation of any rules in this manual are eligible to be re-admittedinprobationstatusonly,andmustimmediatelyshowimprovementintheirperformance,especiallyinareasthatwerethereasonfortheirdismissal.

ChangeofContactInformationItisimportanttokeepyourcontactinformationsuchasaddress,email,andtelephonecurrent.Avalidphonenumber and email address are required by SEVIS. It is also necessary for school records, and also arequirement of the US Immigration Service. Email is particularly important as the school sends importantinformationtostudentsviaemail.A student must provide contact information upon registration, any time the student’s place of residencechanges, or any time that any of the contact information is changed. StudentPlacementAll new students must take a placement test to determine their level of English Proficiency. This is astandardizedtestdevelopedbyPearson-Longman.Studentsshouldtakethis testontheTestDay(MondaysandWednesdaysat12:45pm).ThePlacementTeststructureconsistsoftwoformalparts:FocusonGrammarandNorthStar.Thetestlengthis1hourand30minutes.Speakingisthenassessedduringaninterviewwiththe Program Coordinator. ASSESSMENTThe instructorsdiscussassessmentrequirementsandresultswithstudentsona regularbasis,helping themunderstandwhatisexpectedinordertopassthecourse.It isthestudents’jobtofollowdirectionsgivenbytheirinstructorandthesyllabus,asthesearecriticaltotheirsuccess.

MidtermandFinalTestsMidtermandFinalTestsmustbetakeninalllevelsandcourses.Studentshavetheoptionofobtainingtheirtestresults,alongwithteacher’scommentsandanalysis,twodaysaftertheexam.MidtermtestsaregivenonTuesday(Grammar/M,T,Wclass)andThursday(Conversation/Th,Fclass)duringweek3.FinalTestsaregivenonFriday(Conversation/Th,Fclass)duringweek5andonTuesday(Grammar/M,T,Wclass)duringweek6ofthesession.Mon-Tue-WedElectiveClassesfollowGrammarClassSchedule.Thur-FriElectiveClassesfollowConversationClassSchedule.

Testresultswillbediscussedwiththestudentsasawholeclassandindividually.Testresultswillberecordedbyteachers.

StudentParticipationStudentparticipationwhileinclassiscriticaltotheiroverallsuccessandisabigpartoftheevaluationprocess.Although these students that have passed the Midterm (20%) and Final (40%) Tests and at least partialhomeworkandprojects,areeligibletoadvancetothenextlevel/course,studentsshouldclearlyunderstandthattheymustimprovetheirparticipationinordertoavoidnegativefeedbackfromtheteacherandriskgoingonprobation.

CourseGrading:pass/failsystemAmidtermexam,afinalexam,classparticipation,homeworkandaclasspresentationforeachpart,AandB,arethedeterminingfactorsofastudent’sfinalassessmentinthecourse.BLSutilizesapass/failsystemwhichmeansthatastudentwithafinalgradeof65%orhigherreceivesapass,andastudentwithagradeof64%orlowerreceivesafail.Thefinal12-weeklevelgradeforthemainESLprogram,iscalculatedasacombinationofbothparts.Studentsreceiveaninterim6-weekgradethatiscarriedintotheirnextsession,thesecondhalfofthe level. Students only completing one part of a levelwill not receive a final 12-week grade butmay stillattain a certificate of completion. Studentswith a final grade of 65%or higher,move on the next level. Astudentwhoreceivesafinalgradelowerthan65%,afailinggrade,willthenrepeatthe12-weeklevelbecause

LevelPromotionApassingcumulativescoreofat least65%istheminimumrequirementforpromotiontothenext level.ToadvancetothenextlevelofthemainESLprogram,successfulcompletionofbothpartsofthepriorlevel(12-week,2sessions)andapassinggradeof65%isrequired.Foranyacademicquestions,studentsshouldconsultwiththeProgramCoordinator.

GradeAppealsStudentsmayappealtheircoursegradetotheirteacher.Theteacherwilldiscussthegradewiththestudentandifneeded,ameetingwiththeProgramCoordinatorwillbearranged.Students,whowishtoappealtheircoursegrade,mustdosoassoonasthegradeisreceivedandnolaterthanThursdayofthesixthweekofthesession.

AssignmentMakeUpBellLanguageSchoolisanintensiveESLprogram,anditiscrucialforstudentstokeepupwithallworkinordertobesuccessful.With that inmind, it is thestudent’s responsibility tocompleteallassignments, tests,andotherevaluationsonthedaytheyareadministeredordue.Ifstudentsareabsent,theyarestillresponsibleforthematerialcoveredinclass.Ifastudentisnotpresentduringthemidtermorfinaltest,astudentMUSTnotifytheirteacherofthereasonsandmakemake-uparrangementspriorto/orrightafterthetestdate.Ifastudent’sabsenceonthedayofthetestisofficiallyamedicallyexcusedabsenceandapprovedbytheAdministration,theteachermustallowthestudent the opportunity tomake-up the test as soon as possible. Should the teacher need assistancewithregards to scheduling, he/she may contact the Program Coordinator for help. StudentProgressPart of Bell Language School’s curriculum policy is to evaluate every student based on key factors thatmeasuretheirperformanceandprogress.Thesefactors includedeterminingthe levelofEnglishthestudentpossessesuponenrollment (PlacementTest),MidtermandFinalexams,andaProgramExitExam.Studentsare also evaluated by their ESL instructor throughout the session, and based on their performance theinstructormayormaynotrecommendthestudenttoadvancetothenextlevel.

AttendanceandAcademicProbationAttendanceisacrucialpartofacademicsuccessinBellLanguageSchool.Itisnotonlyvitaltostudentsuccessandacademicprogress,butisalsoarequirementoftheNewYorkStateEducationDepartment,forstudentstomaintainatleast80%ofattendedclassesinanygivensession.Thismeansthatstudentscannotmissmorethan6classespersession,orriskbeingplacedonprobation.Ifstudentsareplacedonprobationduetopoorattendance, students must attend 100% of their classes during the next session. If students fail to do sowithout proper documentation (medical notes, religious holidays, etc.), theymust exit the program at BellLanguageSchool.Ifduringthesessionstudentsmaintaintherequiredattendance,theywillberemovedfromprobation. If theyareplacedonprobation forpoor attendance in anyof the following sessions, theymustmaintain 90% attendance for the remainder of their program in order to be eligible for a Certificate ofCompletion.

Absences,Sickness,andEmergenciesItisveryimportantthatstudentsattendeveryclassinordertonotmissinformationsincetheprogramsareintensivebynatureandsessionsareonly6weekslong.Studentsmaycalloremailtheinstructorortheschoolstaff if theyareunable toattendclass. Studentsare still responsible for theclasswork that theymiss, sostudentshavetobesuretostayinformedfromtheirteachersandclassmatesaboutanyworkthattheyhavemissed.Ifstudentsaresickforanextendedperiodoftime,theyneedtofilloutaLeaveofAbsenceFormandprovideanyevidencetosupporttheclaim(SeeLeaveofAbsencePolicy,AppendixE).Ifstudentsaresick,butdonotqualifyforaLeaveofAbsence,theyneedtosubmitvalidevidenceoftheillness,suchasamedicalnotefromthedoctor,assoonasyougetsick.There are NO EXCUSED ABSENCES at Bell Language School. If students have missed classes they areresponsibleforthem,includingtests,papers,andhomework.However,theteachermayestablishhisorherownmake-uppolicyformissedtestsandwork.Studentsthatmissmorethan20%oftheirclassesareplacedonprobation.Thesestudentsarenoteligiblefora Certificate of Completion, transferring to another school in good immigration status, or completing theirprogramuntiltheyareremovedfromtheirprobationstatus.StudentsmustinformBellLanguageSchoolStaffaboutallemergenciessuchasaccidents,hospitalization,orsickness.Wewillassisttheminnotifyingtheirsponsoringagenciesandfamilymembers.

PersistentBehavioralIssuesandAcademicProbationIfstudent’sbehaviorinclassisnotappropriate,teachersshouldinformthestudentinastrictandprofessionalmanner.Ifthestudentcontinuestobehaveinappropriatelyorunproductively,teachersshouldspeaktothemindividuallyorreferthemtotheESLProgramCoordinatororStudentServicesCoordinator.AformcalledBellLanguageSchoolStudentGuidelineswillbereviewedandsignedbythestudentstoserveasarecordofthemeeting. After reviewing and signing this form, the student will be placed on academic probation. If thisbehaviorisongoingwhileonprobation,thestudentmustexittheprogramatBLS.

If you are not meeting the standards of Bell Language School academic policies and/or attendancerequirements, you may be placed on Academic Probation and the school Director will monitor yourprogress. Duringthistime,youmust improveyourgradesand/orattendance,orriskbeingexpelledfromBell Language School. There are several reasons you may be put on Academic probation: 1) Poorperformanceandprogress inyourclasses,2)Attendancefallsbelowrequirement,3)PersistentBehavioralissuesinclass,4)Repeatingaclass.AttendancePleaserememberthatAttendanceisacrucialpartofyourstudiesinBellLanguageSchool.Itisnotonlyvitaltoyousuccessandacademicprogress,butisalsoarequirementoftheUSImmigrationAuthorities,foryoutomaintainat least80%ofattendedclasses inanygivensession.
