AboutUsBellLanguageSchoolhasbeenprovidingaffordablequalityEnglish-Languageinstructiontostudentssince1999.OurteachersarecertifiedbytheStateofNewYorkandarededicatedtotheirwork.Theirspecializedtrainingisfocusedoneffectivelyinstructinginternationalstudents.Bell Language School’s instructors utilize the best practices in the field of English Language instruction toimplementideasandresearch-basedinstructionalapproachesintheclassroom.Theseteachingstrategiesarebased on the guidelines set forth by the US Department of Education and CEA, including standards for:curriculum, instruction,and transition.English languageclassesaredelivered in culturally sensitive, real-lifecontexts using a comprehensive approach that recognizes variousmodalities of learning (visual, audio, andkinesthetic),andinteractiveteachingstrategies.Becauseour school is located in Brooklyn, our students enjoy lowapartment rentals, convenient access tobeaches,andneighborhoodsrichinhistoryandculturaldiversity.Travelingaroundthecity isnotaproblembecausepublictransportation iseasilyaccessibleandcantakeyoutoanyofthefiveboroughsofNewYorkCity, including Manhattan, which is located only 20 minutes from the school by public transportation.As soon as youwalk through the doors of Bell, youwill find a cozy and home-like atmosphere. ClassHoursandBreakTimesBellLanguageSchooloffersclasses3shiftsperday:Morning8:30am–12:15pmAfternoon1:00pm-4:45pmEvening6:00pm-9:45pmAllclassesaregiveninaccordancewiththeschoolschedule,availabletoeverystudentintheirhandbooks,onthewebsite,and throughout theschool.Classesare3hoursand45minutes in length;withone15-minutebreakinthemiddleoftheclass(10:00-10:15am/2:30-2:45pm/7:30-7:45pm).

ClassVisitorsBellLanguageSchooldoesnotallowanyonetovisittheclassroomsunlesstheyareregisteredandenrolledintheschoolorhaveexplicitwrittenpermissionfromtheschoolDirector.Visitorscoulddisrupttheeducationprocessoftheschooland isunfairtoenrolledstudents.Anyonewishingtosit inonaclassforanypurposemustfirstobtainwrittenpermissionfromtheschoolDirectortodoso.Theonlyexceptioncanbepeoplethataredirectlyobservingschoolactivitiesorclassroomstudyonbehalfofgoverningagenciessuchasemployeesfrom theNewYork State EducationDepartment, accrediting agencies, or officials from theUS ImmigrationDepartment.

LateArrivalBLSsessionsare6weeksinlength.Studentsshouldmakearrangementstocomeontimeforthestartoftheprogram. Bell Language School understands that unexpected situations happen; therefore, students thatarrivetoschoolduringthefirstweekofclassesorlaterareconsideredlatearrivals.Studentsmayregisterforaclassduringthefirst threeweeksof thesessionbut it ishighlyencouragedtomaketravelarrangementstoarriveontimeforthestartofthesession.Ifthestudent’snameisnotontheroster,theteacherwillsendthestudenttotheAdmissionsOfficetoobtaintheLateArrivalClassAdmissionForm.WhenthestudentbringstheLateArrivalClassAdmissionFormtotheteacher,theteacherwilladdthestudent’snametothebottomoftheclassrosterandattachtheformtotheroster.Teacherswillpayparticularattentiontolate-registrationstudentsandallowthemtocatchuponmissedworkbyallocatingmoretimetotheirneeds,whenreasonable.Thestudentswillbeprovidedwithaclasssyllabus,with topics that theyhavemissedspecified.Theywill alsobeprovidedwithany relevantclasshandoutsaswellaspreviouslyassignedhomework.Fromthere,itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytocompletetherequiredmaterial.Theteacherwillbeavailabletohelpstudentsiftheyhavequestionswhilecatchingup.

StudentAttendanceAttendanceisacrucialpartofacademicsuccessatBellLanguageSchool.Itisimportantforstudentsuccesstoattend and participate in each and every class. A student arriving during the middle of a lesson is verydisruptiveanddisrespectfultoeveryone,includingtheteacherandstudentsintheclass.Studentsareaskedtopleaserespecttheclasstimesandbeontimetoclass.Inaddition,immigrationrequirementsmandatethatstudentsmaintaintheirattendanceatacertainleveltoremain inactivestudent status. Notonly is it vital to student successandacademicprogress,but isalsoarequirementofUSCIS,forstudentstomaintainatleast80%attendanceinanygivensessioninorderthatthestudentmaymaintaingoodacademicstandingandimmigrationstatus.Thismeansthatstudentscannotmissmorethan6classespersession.Attendanceistakentwiceperclass-15minutesaftertheclassstartsand15minutesbeforetheclassends.Ifastudent is more than 15 minutes late to the beginning of class before or after break, the student is not

permittedtoentertheclassroom.Ifontheclassroomdoor,theentrancesignsays‘STOP!’,studentsarenottoentertheclassroom.Thisistopreventdisruptionanddistractioninthemiddleofclasses.Please note that there are no excused absences at Bell Language School with the exception of medicalexcused absences or otherwise documented emergency situations that bar a student from attending.MedicallyexcusedabsencesmaybegrantedthroughtheAdmissionsOfficebysubmittingamedicaldocumentfromalicensedhealthcareproviderstatingthatthestudentwasunabletoattendclasses,thespecificdatesofexcused absences from school, and contact information for the healthcare provider. All students’communication regarding missed classes should be discussed with the school administration. If a studentmissesaclass,he/sheisexpectedgototheirteacherforadviceandguidanceonmissedmaterial.Theteacherwillhelptoget thestudentbackontracktothebestof theirabilityduringteacher-studentconferencesbyprovidinginformationaboutcoveredmaterialandassignments.If a student knows he/shemustmiss a class, please inform the Admissions office by sending an email toinfo@bellschool.orgassoonaspossible.Itisveryimportanttocommunicatewiththeschooladministrationandyourteachersaspoorattendancemaynegativelyimpactyourperformance,andthereforeyourgrades.

StudentbodyBell LanguageSchooldoes itsbest tosupport the influxofmulticultural studentsonanongoingbasis. Ourstudentscomefromallovertheworld(91countriesinour15yearsofoperation)andthemajorityofthemareintheir20’s.

StudentResponsibilitiesStudent responsibilities include the following (for a complete list, please familiarize yourself with BellLanguageSchoolStudentGuidelines(intheAppendixB):1.Totreateachotherandtheirinstructorswithrespect.2.Toobtainbooksprior tothestartof thesession(listofbooksareavailable inAppendixAof theStudentHandbook).3. To attend every class and to be on time to class unless unable to do so for medical or other reasondiscussedwiththeschooladministration.4.Toactivelyparticipateandengageinclassroomactivities.5.Tocompleteallassignments,tests,andquizzesgivenbytheinstructor.

StudentGrievancesandComplaintsIn caseswhere studentshavegrievancesor complaintsabout the staff, theyareencouraged todiscuss theproblemwiththatmember.Iftheyareuncomfortableindiscussingtheir issueswiththestaffmember,theyarewelcometospeaktooneoftheadministratorsortakeadvantageoftheDirector’s“opendoorpolicy”andexpresstheirconcernsdirectlytoher.Thiswillleadtoanexplorationoftheproblem,keepingschoolpoliciesin mind, student and teacher interests. Students may also submit a written complaint to the ProgramCoordinator,teacherorschoolDirector.Inallcases,theschoolDirectorwilldiscussthesegrievanceswiththestudent andaddress issueswith the respective staffmembers to come to a resolutionof theproblemandensure this problem does not reoccur. School administration keeps all the records of formal (written)complaintsandtheirresolutions.

CompletionUpon completion of the program, a student should complete all the required paperwork and obtain aTranscriptor/andCertificateofCompletion.

CertificatesofCompletion/TranscriptsBellLanguageSchoolprovidesnon-creditcourses.In order to get a Certificate of Completion, students must successfully complete all Bell Language Schoolclasses that theywere registered for. Successful completionofaclassmeans thata studentpassedall thetests and satisfied the 80% attendance requirements. The following factors also contribute to a student’seligibilitytoobtainaCertificateofCompletion:

• F-1 students that are eligible for transfer to another school are also eligible for a Certificate ofCompletion

WithdrawalsIfyouneedtowithdrawandstopyourstudiesatBellLanguageSchool,pleasenotifytheAdmissionsOfficeandtheDSOinwritingaboutyourintentandreasonbehindyourwithdrawal.Therearetwotypesofwithdrawal:-AuthorizedWithdrawal:Inordertogetanauthorizationtowithdrawtheschool,studentshavetosubmitanofficiallettertotheschool’sDSOandproperdocumentationandgetanapprovalfromDSO.StudentshavetomakesurethattheirSEVISisupdatedontimeand15daysgraceperiodisreceived.-UnauthorizedWithdrawalisunderstoodas“droppingout”ofschoolwithoutnotificationandauthorization.Students should be aware that they are jeopardizing their student visa and theywill have a “0” day graceperiod.InthiscasestudentsmustleavetheU.S.immediately.If students intend to leave the U.S. theymust provide the school Admissions Officewith proof of intent todepart,forexampleflightconfirmationorairlinetickets.

TransferringSchoolsStudents can transfer fromBell LanguageSchool toanew institutionas longas it ispermittedbyUSCIS toenrollF-1students.IfstudentswanttotransferfromBellLanguageSchooltoanotherinstitution,theyhavetonotify aBell Language School's foreign adviser at least amonthbefore the transfer inorder todiscuss thedatesanddeadlines.StudentshavetomakesuretofollowDSO’sadvicetocompletetheirtransferprocedure

ontimetomaintaintheirF1status.Studentsalsohavetomakesurethattheycompletethesessionstheypaidforbeforethetransfer.Students must complete a transfer form from the school they intend to transfer to and bring it to BellLanguage School. It is very important for students to complete a school transfer form and bring it to BellLanguageSchoolasthisformcontainsimmigrationinformationthatweneedtoprovidetothenewschoolinordertosuccessfullytransferan I-20tothenewschool. Leavingandnottransferringstudents’ informationcanputtheirimmigrationstatusindanger.Itisimportantthatstudentsfollowallimmigrationrulesconcerningwithdrawals.IfstudentsareunsureoftherulestheyhavetocontacttheschoolForeignStudentAdvisortodiscusstheirspecificsituation.

LeaveofAbsenceAleaveofabsenceistobegrantedonlyinextenuatingcircumstances,suchasanaccident,prolongedillness,maternityleave,thedeathofarelative,orextensivetravelabroad.ALeaveofAbsenceRequestFormmustbefilledout.LeaveofAbsenceisnotanauthorizedvacation.Sincestudentsaregivenabreakbetweeneverysession,noformalvacationistobegranted,unlessstudentsaretravelingabroadforanextensiveperiodoftime(airlinereservation confirmation is required). ChangeofContactInformationItisimportanttokeepyourcontactinformationsuchasaddress,email,andtelephonecurrent.Avalidphonenumber and email address are required by SEVIS. Students only completing one part of a levelwill not receive a final 12-week grade butmay stillattain a certificate of completion. Studentswith a final grade of 65%or higher,move on the next level. GradeAppealsStudentsmayappealtheircoursegradetotheirteacher.Theteacherwilldiscussthegradewiththestudentandifneeded,ameetingwiththeProgramCoordinatorwillbearranged.Students,whowishtoappealtheircoursegrade,mustdosoassoonasthegradeisreceivedandnolaterthanThursdayofthesixthweekofthesession.

AssignmentMakeUpBellLanguageSchoolisanintensiveESLprogram,anditiscrucialforstudentstokeepupwithallworkinordertobesuccessful.With that inmind, it is thestudent’s responsibility tocompleteallassignments, tests,andotherevaluationsonthedaytheyareadministeredordue.Ifstudentsareabsent,theyarestillresponsibleforthematerialcoveredinclass.Ifastudentisnotpresentduringthemidtermorfinaltest,astudentMUSTnotifytheirteacherofthereasonsandmakemake-uparrangementspriorto/orrightafterthetestdate.Ifastudent’sabsenceonthedayofthetestisofficiallyamedicallyexcusedabsenceandapprovedbytheAdministration,theteachermustallowthestudent the opportunity tomake-up the test as soon as possible. RepeatingCoursesStudentswithapassinggradeof65%automaticallycontinuetothenextlevel.Ifastudentfeelsthathe/sherequiresmorepractice inaparticular course/levelandneeds to repeata course/level,he/shemustdiscussthisissuewiththeteacher.TheteacherwillthenconsultwiththeProgramCoordinator.Thestudentmaybeallowedtorepeatthecourse/level,buttherepetitionislimitedtoonetime.Insuchcases,thestudentmustfill out a class transfer form stating his/her reasons for wanting to repeat. The teacher and the ProgramCoordinatormustthenapprovethestudent’srequest.

AcademicProbationIf a student fails tomake satisfactory progress and is notmeeting the standards of Bell Language School’sacademicpolicies,and/orattendancerequirements,he/shemaybeplacedonacademicprobationand/ormaybe required to repeat the failed course. The ESL ProgramCoordinatorwillmonitor the student’s progress.During this time, the student must improve his/her grades and/or attendance. If unable or unwilling tocomply,thestudentmaybeaskedtoexittheprogramatBellLanguageSchool.Thereareseveralreasonsstudentsmaybeputonacademicprobation:1.Poorperformanceandprogressinclass2.Attendancefallsbelow80%requirement3.Persistentbehavioralissuesinclass4.RepeatingaclassmorethantwiceWhen students are placed on probation, they will receive a Notice of Academic Probation, which will bediscussed with them during an interview with the ESL Program Coordinator or Student ServicesRepresentative. After the session forwhich a studentwas placed on Academic Probation is complete, theProgramCoordinatormayscheduleafollow-upinterviewwiththestudent.

PerformanceandAcademicProbationIfastudentfails thesessionduetopoorperformanceonthetestand/orduringthesession,he/shewillberecommended to repeat the course or may be conditionally placed into the next course. If a studentsuccessfullypasses thenextsession,he/shecanmoveonto thenextcourse. If thestudent fails thecoursehe/shewasconditionallyplacedinto,he/shehastorepeatthepreviouslyfailedcourseaswell.Noteveryonelearnsatthesamepace,howeverifthestudentisnotshowingsufficientprogressandfailsthecourse/level, he/shewill beputonAcademicProbationand repeat the course/levelorplaced in the lowerlevel ifnecessary.Studentscannotrepeatthecourse/levelmorethantwice. Ifstudentscontinuetostayonprobationforaprolongedperiodoftime,theymustexittheprogramatBellLanguageSchool.

AttendanceandAcademicProbationAttendanceisacrucialpartofacademicsuccessinBellLanguageSchool.Itisnotonlyvitaltostudentsuccessandacademicprogress,butisalsoarequirementoftheNewYorkStateEducationDepartment,forstudentstomaintainatleast80%ofattendedclassesinanygivensession.Thismeansthatstudentscannotmissmorethan6classespersession,orriskbeingplacedonprobation.Ifstudentsareplacedonprobationduetopoorattendance, students must attend 100% of their classes during the next session. If students fail to do sowithout proper documentation (medical notes, religious holidays, etc.), theymust exit the program at BellLanguageSchool.Ifduringthesessionstudentsmaintaintherequiredattendance,theywillberemovedfromprobation. If theyareplacedonprobation forpoor attendance in anyof the following sessions, theymustmaintain 90% attendance for the remainder of their program in order to be eligible for a Certificate ofCompletion.

Absences,Sickness,andEmergenciesItisveryimportantthatstudentsattendeveryclassinordertonotmissinformationsincetheprogramsareintensivebynatureandsessionsareonly6weekslong.Studentsmaycalloremailtheinstructorortheschoolstaff if theyareunable toattendclass. Studentsare still responsible for theclasswork that theymiss, sostudentshavetobesuretostayinformedfromtheirteachersandclassmatesaboutanyworkthattheyhavemissed.Ifstudentsaresickforanextendedperiodoftime,theyneedtofilloutaLeaveofAbsenceFormandprovideanyevidencetosupporttheclaim(SeeLeaveofAbsencePolicy,AppendixE).Ifstudentsaresick,butdonotqualifyforaLeaveofAbsence,theyneedtosubmitvalidevidenceoftheillness,suchasamedicalnotefromthedoctor,assoonasyougetsick.There are NO EXCUSED ABSENCES at Bell Language School. If students have missed classes they areresponsibleforthem,includingtests,papers,andhomework.However,theteachermayestablishhisorherownmake-uppolicyformissedtestsandwork.Studentsthatmissmorethan20%oftheirclassesareplacedonprobation.Thesestudentsarenoteligiblefora Certificate of Completion, transferring to another school in good immigration status, or completing theirprogramuntiltheyareremovedfromtheirprobationstatus.StudentsmustinformBellLanguageSchoolStaffaboutallemergenciessuchasaccidents,hospitalization,orsickness.Wewillassisttheminnotifyingtheirsponsoringagenciesandfamilymembers.

PersistentBehavioralIssuesandAcademicProbationIfstudent’sbehaviorinclassisnotappropriate,teachersshouldinformthestudentinastrictandprofessionalmanner.Ifthestudentcontinuestobehaveinappropriatelyorunproductively,teachersshouldspeaktothemindividuallyorreferthemtotheESLProgramCoordinatororStudentServicesCoordinator.AformcalledBellLanguageSchoolStudentGuidelineswillbereviewedandsignedbythestudentstoserveasarecordofthemeeting. After reviewing and signing this form, the student will be placed on academic probation. If thisbehaviorisongoingwhileonprobation,thestudentmustexittheprogramatBLS.

ClassEvaluationAt the end of each session, students will be asked to complete an evaluation of their teachers’ and staffperformance, and the overall school environment. The purpose of this evaluation is for you to inform usaboutstudents’impressionoftheseaspectsoftheschool.Itisalsoanopportunitytosuggestimprovementsfortheschoolandit’semployees.Theseevaluationsaredoneanonymouslytoimproveourperformanceandthisdoesnotaffectyourstatusintheschool.Students are encouraged to be open and honest in evaluating the school as this helps us improve ourperformanceforcurrentandfuturestudents.StudentsarealsoencouragedtomakesuggestionsbeyondtheevaluationformsbydiscussingthemwiththeschoolstaffortheDirector.PleaseseetheClassEvaluationformasAppendixF.

CheatingandPlagiarismPresentingsomeoneelse’sworkasyourownintestingsituationsisanactofcheating.CheatingisalsoanactofacademicdishonestyandisaseriousoffenseintheUSacademicenvironment.Ifyouarecaughtcheating,youwillbepenalizeddependingonthetypeofoffenseandthiswillberecordedinyourpermanentfile.Ifitisconsistentbehavior,youmaybedismissedfromtheschool.Plagiarism is presenting someone else’swork as your own in other than a test setting. Anywork that youpresent forevaluationshouldhavecitations ifyou’veusedanyotherperson’s ideasormaterials. ZeroTolerancePolicyAbusivebehavior is not allowedatBell LanguageSchool. If youarebeing verballyorphysically abusive toanyoneoncampus,youwillbesubjecttoimmediatedismissalfromtheschool.

LettersofRecommendationforStudentsUponstudents’request,instructorsareallowedtowritelettersofrecommendationtostudentsbasedontheirindividualacademicperformancefortheirperiodofinstructiononly.Theyshouldbegiventothestudent,notsent on behalf of the student to any agency or school. If necessary, teachersmay reflect on the student’spersonalbehaviortoshowpositivetraitssuchasresponsibility,punctuality,andcooperation.ThecopiesofalltherecommendationsshouldbeprovidedtotheAdministrationtobefiledinthestudent’sfolder.

CultureShockCulture shock refers to the feelings associated with adjusting to a new country and culture.
