It is a great pleasure for me to be able to welcome you as a student at the Aarhus School of Architecture.

The education covers all aspects of the architectural profession - from design to physical planning - and during your first year of study you will be given an insight into all the scales of the discipline. Following this, you will increasingly be given an opportunity to compose your own individual course of study, which will enable you to specialise according to your own professional interests and abilities. Regardless what special area of study you choose, we always emphasise the traditional core competences of the architect, the artistic approach to the assignment and the ability to work spatially as well as visually.

The Aarhus School of Architecture is an institution of higher education under Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher Education and has as its objective on an artistic and scientific level to offer education in architecture until the highest level, to practise artistic innovation work, and, on a scientific basis, to carry out research within the field of architecture.

The Aarhus School of Architecture has about 800 enrolled students of which 175 are international plus a staff of about 170.

Inspiration from the outside is crucial for ongoing innovation and development. As an institution of higher education and research in a relatively small town in a small country we attach great importance to international exchange, for instance, by involving lecturers, teachers and students from abroad. During the fourth and fifth year of study we offer a number of courses in English.

I hope this guide will provide you with answers to any immediate questions you might have regarding the education, the school and its facilities.

The officially stipulated period of study at the Aarhus School of Architecture is five years: a Bachelor programme with a duration of three years and a Master programme with a duration of two years.

Bachelor programmeThe Bachelor programme provides you with a thorough introduction to the field of operation of architecture and the disciplines of architecture.

The first year is an introduction to the methods, analytical tools and communication of the discipline. During the practice and project-based part of the three year programme, we focus on themes such as space, form, program, construction and context.

The problem-oriented project work is the central element of the education and reflects the profession’s practise and action-oriented character. The point of departure is openly formulated architectural problems related to the society around us.

The project work will take place in dialogue with your teachers and fellow students and requires that you are present in the studio every day. You will be working both in groups and individually. Typically we will alternate between joint preliminary studies and analyses followed by individual development of syntheses.

Through exercises and assignments, you will develop your ability to interpret and analyse; to make yourself acquainted with and put into perspective a complex of problems; and to prioritise; make choices and summarise in a ‘solution’.

All exercises and projects contain a basic course of lectures and often more or less assignment-integrated courses. Assignments/projects will be concluded by a critique where teachers and students discuss work processes and results.Studies in the studios are regularly supplemented with for instance field trips and study trips.

Your study place will be in the unit/studio.

During the second and third year, you will be introduced to long-running projects aimed at the breadth of the study and the discipline. Through courses and workshops you will be introduced to theories and specialized areas of the profession. The third year is concluded by a Bachelor project.

Master programmeThe Master programme provides students with the opportunity for specialising within a defined area of the architectural profession. Emphasis is placed on projects of a longer duration that are supported by seminars, lectures, workshops and study trips that focus on specific disciplines and areas of specialization that are knowledge based and theory supported. The student concludes his or her study with a final graduation project and examination.

Mod

As a student you must continuously keep a logbook. This book should contain your notes from lectures and reflections on your daily studies.

After each assignment/project you must hand in a reflection sheet with your asessment of which competences you have developed during the course.

You must continuously gather your work in a portfolio that must include your assignment results and document your working process. The portfolio will be used to communicate and present your studies.

Studies abroad have become an integrated part of the planning for many students of architecture. Various support programmes and the Aarhus School of Architecture’s participation in different networks have opened up so that it is possible for the students to have cultural and professional inputs through studies abroad.

Studies abroad can normally be approved during the fifth term and during the fourth year of study. Only overmastering academic reasons can give grounds for dispensation from this rule.

Information about possible institutions and rules on possible support options are changing all the time, so it will be necessary for you to be given further counselling by the international coordinator of the school.

The Career Workshop is an opportunity for you if you want to clarify your career opportunities while you are a student at Aarhus School of Architecture. We support your individual direction as an architect and support you in making qualified choices in order to navigate your studies towards the occupational life you desire. In the Career Workshop we are aware of the many career paths open to architects.

Career Guidance Your studies lead to your life as a professional architect. Career Guidance is one-on-one guidance, sparring and coaching about your career path. Book a meeting at [email protected]. For students at the Aarhus School of Architecture individual career guidance takes place as a confidential conversation.

InSpeIs a student run initiative about careers and the professional life as an architect. InSpe is an opportunity for students who want to influence their study environment and establish a good network. InSpe allows you, along with other students, to take initiatives for events and happenings concerned with the traditional as well as the untraditional career paths of architects - and the ways of achieving them.

Applications for sabbatical leave must be sent before the commencement of the sabbatical period. You can fill in the form at: http://aarch.dk/til/studerende/nuvaerende/vejledning/orlov/

Sabbatical leave may be granted for a semester or for an entire year of study at a time.

When a semester has commenced it is not possible to apply for sabbatical leave. The maximum allowable leave is three semesters during the Bachelor programme and three semesters during the graduate programme.

Ordinarily, first-year students are not granted sabbatical leave.

If you need to apply for maternity leave you should notify the Studies Division office (see p. 22). In this case, you should not apply for sabbatical leave.

The Aarhus School of Architecture makes a determined effort to prepare you for the professional reality that awaits you when you have finished your studies. We therefore have in view that you have a period of practical training during your time of study in either a private or public office in or outside Denmark.

The purpose is to strengthen your project development skills and give you the ability to focus your further studies. Practical training therefore gives credit points.

The period of practical training is five months and is normally approved on the fourth year of study.

The instructors are the employed teach-ers of the school, professors, assistant professors, professional assistants and occasionally PhD students as well as guest lecturers or variable external tutors invited to perform specific educational courses.

Permanent employees are attached to one of the academic platforms where they contribute with their research and teach on either bachelor or master level.Guidance can be individual or group based. Individual tuition is most likely to take place by your personal station in the unit/studio and should be a discussion of your research, ideas, sketches etc. between you and your teacher.

All elements of the education are assessed. Which educational elements are assessed will appear from the academic regulations for the Bachelor and for the graduate program-me, respectively. The rules for assessment appear from the academic regulations and from the more specific assessment rules for the various levels of study.

Educational guidanceEducational guidance is a forward-looking guidance that gives you advice on your study efforts. The educational guidance is given by your project supervisor(s) at the end of the term and can be based on a personal conversation with you, going through your portfolio, etc. You will not be given an educational guidance at the end of

the Bachelor programme (6th term) and the graduate programme (10th term).

ECTS creditsAll programme elements have been given a number of ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System). The sy-stem is to ensure comparability within further and higher education programmes in the EU. Full-time studies for one term correspond to 30 ECTS credits.

MarkingMost large and a few small programme elements are assessed by giving marks (7-mark scale) while the rest are assessed as passed/not passed or approved/not approved.

Student assistant counselling is an offer to all students for casual and informal stu-dent assistant counselling on all aspects of everyday life at the Aarhus School of Architecture.

The student assistants can for instance help you if you have questions about admission, or if you need some advice on study methods, direction of study, etc.

This is where you can have almost any question answered regarding studies, ad-mission, SU (The Danish students’ Grants and Loans Scheme), Special Educational Support, practical training, studies abroad, sabbatical leave, course administration, final examination, etc. You can also meet the student assistants.

If you have any questions, it is always a good idea to check if you can find the answer on aarch.dk before you contact the Studies Division.

Before you can use the workshops, you must sign a declaration that you have taken out a full-time accident insurance and that you have completed an introduction course in safety and the use of workshop machinery. (Se safety p.44)

The workshops may only be used by the students of the school – and only for study assignments.

Please remember that you must tidy up and clean every day.

The workshop disposes of different tools and machines for wood processing – this includes everything from hand tools to a CNC moulding machine.

For security reasons, a maximum of 15 students are allowed in the workshop simulataneously. You can book time as soon as you know when you want to use the workshop.

Here it is possible to produce metal items for study-related models and prototypes. The workshop can make available a number of tools and machines; such as, for instance, a cross-cut saw, an upright drilling machine, an abrasion unit. Furthermore, you can use the workshop welder for welding in many different metals such as, for instance, iron, bronze and aluminium.

Open 24/7. Here it is possible to construct many types of architectural models and prototypes. At the workshop you will find a number of small-scale machines and tools which make it possible to produce models of an especially high quality and with a high degree of detail.

The workshop also has a high-frequency welding unit, a plastic vacuum molder and a foam cutter.

The digital workshop consists of two laser cutter and a 3D printer. You can use the laser cutter to cut materials such as cardboard, wood, textile material and plastics according to computer drawings. The 3D printer allows you to “print” your assignments in plaster.a The Mock-Up room is equipped with a a water jet cutter which can be used for cutting steel, concrete, stone and glass.

In the Mock-Up room it is possible to make large-scale models and experiments. The large floor area and the high-ceilinged room make it possible to make 1:1 mock-ups as well as other models which require much space.

In the Mock-Up it is allowed to make a mess and use the tools - but you MUST clean up your mess by the end of the day.

The Robot Laboratory is equipped with an ABB 6620 industrial robot capable of carrying out several digital methods of processing in full-scale (1:1), including filament cutting, CNC cutting and gripping/montage. For safety reason the laboratory is only accessible as part of specific courses during which trained personnel will be instructing in the use of the robot. If you want to use the robot for research purposes you must make an individual appointment.

In the casting workshop you can cast concrete and plaster. The workshop is equipped with an agitator mixer for mixing concrete and a vibrating table. You must bring most materials yourself. However, Aalborg Portland delivers cement to a wide extent for general use. Use the high pressure cleaner to clean the room. In the yard you will find a container for plaster and concrete waste.

Cement is alkaline and can cauterize your retina. So, please mind your eyes. Should an accident happen, rinse thoroughly with salt water and seek medical assistance.

The library is located in the heart of the school, and is suitable for both studying and socializing. At the library you can be assisted in seeking information and relevant materials for your studies, or you can browse the shelves by yourself and explore our large collection on architecture, design, urban planning, etc. You can also use the library to read the latest magazines in the field, or maybe you want to dig into our vast DVD collection, while hanging out in a fatboy, enjoying your lunch and drinking the best coffee on the school – of course bought at the library.

The Library is a part of the study environment at the school, and it contains space set aside for group meetings and project work. Quiete study places are located on the 1st floor of the library. The Library also contains an exhibition area, where students can display their work. The staff is looking forward to welcoming you all at the library.

The canteen at the school is the daily meeting and eating place for students and employees. It offers dishes from the kitchens of the world.

The canteen opens with breakfast, coffee/tea with homemade buns and pastry. For lunch there is at least one meat/fish and vegetarian course, soup, tart, salads, plus sandwiches. All afternoon coffee/tea with homemade cake.

The wind and climate laboratory handles instruction in creating shelter in outdoor spaces around buildings – and gives inspiration for qualified solutions to assignments where wind problems may occur.

The expertise and equipment of the lab for model testing are aimed at all the scales of the architectural profession – from design of furniture and equipment over building design to urban and landscape planning.

The shop sells almost anything for drawing and model building. Has furthermore specialised in books and magazines on architecture and design from Danish and foreign publishers. There are more than 4000 different Danish and foreign titles in the store.

The Aarhus School of Architecture owns a variety of printed and digital maps.

Printed and historical maps can be found in the basement below the Printing Office and digital maps can be accessed via the network drives by using a dedicated GIS application (see itsupport.aarch.dk for setting up network drives).

The Digital Map Archive is physically located in the library, here you can get help and guidance with regards to the use of digital maps.

The printing office, among other things, offers students and employees of the school the following services: various types of copying and printing, ranging from A4 to A0; finishing of books and booklets; scans up to A0.

InSpe is the students own association within the field of innovation, entrepreneurship and networking.

InSpe arranges events relevant to the life as an architect outside the school and work closely with the association for student politics, spARK.

You are welcome to contact InSpe or you can come to the meetings with spARK/InSpe every wednesday at 12.00.

Arkibal is the students’ party association. We think that behind every good party is good, creative workmanship. There must be something for the ears, the eyes and the mouth – but most important is the chance to be socially amused.

spARK is the student political organisation as well as the connection between stu-dents and the management of the school. As a student at the Aarhus School of Architecture you can use spARK for raising questions, clarifying questions, complain-ing or contributing ideas for improvements at all levels. Most of the events start with an idea from a student. Together we see it through - be ambitous!

In short, spARK is the mouthpiece of the students, and you give spARK the best conditions for optimizing conditions at the school by showing up in great numbers. This will ensure a nuanced view of the education as well as a good foundation for cooperation across semesters.

The day-to-day operation of spARK is man-aged by the three secretaries of spARK. Everyone is welcome to our meetings every wednesday from 12.00-13.00 - in TELTET.

DAFF – the film society of students of architecture – approx. every two weeks shows films in which architecture plays a role. The films are shown in the large auditorium at the school and are for students and staff at the Aarhus School of Architecture. Admission is free.

KÅRK is an architectural magazine, run by students from the Aarhus School of Architecture in collaboration with the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. For students, KÅRK provides an opportunity for examining subjects related to the architectural profession, for improving the ability to communicate professional problems in writing, and for creating a network – as well at the school as outside of it.

KÅRK gives the students the ability to present their ideas in text, photo or drawing, and challenges to think inside a

frame of a specific theme or context. KÅRK is distributed free of charge at the two schools of architecture and at chosen architect’s offices, studios and libraries, and a new magazine is released every semester (2 times a year).

It is always possible to become a part of the editorial board of KÅRK or participate by submitting works or ideas for the upcoming magazine.

Teachers and students may come in contact with materials and products that can be harmful to their health and when used the wrong way dangerous. Therefore, they must be handled with care and attention, and the safety instructions must be abided by. If this is not the case, teaching can be stopped immediately by the head of security at the school.

Product and information foldersTeachers as well as students are under an obligation to familiarise themselves with the contents of the information folders placed in central spots in the various building sections of the school. The folders contain information about the individual products, user guides and instructions on how you should conduct yourself in case of accidents.

Special precautions Use of various spray products and paint MUST take place outside or in the facilities with mechanical exhaust ventilation arranged for this purpose. Work with foam material where electric wire cutters are used must also take place in the specially arranged facilities. These facilities MUST be cleaned up on a daily basis. You are only allowed to work with plaster, cement, mortar and similar materials in the casting workshop - and users MUST tidy up and clean daily.

Traditionally students arrange the annual Christmas market where homemade designs and creations are sold: jewelry, clothing, purses, accessories etc.

Usually a couple of students take on the task of arranging the event. Watch out for emails, posters and flyers.

Every year before the beginning of the autumn term, the freshman event welcomes new students to the school.

In April spARK announces two posi-tions for the job as lead planner of the event. All students can apply for the job. The lead planners are to arrange the event and manage and hire co-planners.

As a student of architecture you are qualified and have the opportunity to compete in national as well as international competitions and take part in various workshops and courses.

See aarch.dk and contribute by sending competition material to the student assistants in order to share your knowledge with your fellow students.

Archi Tegn Is selling almost everything you need for building models. Always high quality materials and it is therefore expensive. Often less will do.

Art de VosAt the store on Klosterport 4 there is a large selection of artist accessories.

Cardboard boxes for bicyclesAt the bicycle shop “Rask” on Nørregade 18-20 they are keen to give away cardboard boxes. The cardboard is thick and durable and is good for model work.

StyrofoamAt “Århus Hårde Hvidevarer” on Nørregade 10-14 you can usually have large pieces of free styrofoam.

WoodAt DIY centers you can buy cheap wood. DIY centers such as Silvan and Stark are both situated on Daubjergvej. Occasionally you can buy cheap scrap wood and timber.

ArkitektforbundetThe architects union is called ”Arkitekt-forbundet”. The union manage payment negotiation and working conditions for architects.

As a student of architecture you can get a membership of Arkitektforbundet and gain advantages in counselling, member-ship activities, magazines and insurance discounts.

The Danish Architects’ AssociationAn independent association with the pur-pose to support and promote architectural quality. The association counts about 7.000 qualified architects, who are entitled to use the protected title MAA.

With a student membership you have the privilege to attend events of the associa-tion and gain discounts on magazines, insurance and more. As a member you will also receive the specialist journal “Arkitekten”.
