GENERAL INFORMATION

Welcome to Assiniboia Composite High School! Our intention is to offer a wide selection of courses that will meet graduation needs. Below is an outline of compulsory educational requirements and guidelines for the selection of optional subjects. Course descriptions are provided to assist you. Timetables are set up to allow students in each grade to fulfill their requirements. Classes will be filled by students from the course level first, then filled on a first come, first served basis.

We ask that students share this material with parents or guardians in order that all may fully participate in decisions made.

SASKATCHEWANCREDIT REQUIREMENTS

Saskatchewan students must attain at least twenty-four credits prior to graduation. However, all students should strive to graduate with 30 credits (full load).

Students must have two English 30 or 31 credits, at least one Math 10 and 1 Math 11 credit, one Canadian Studies 30 (History 30/Native Studies 30) plus an additional social science at the 20 or 30 level (either History 30, Native Studies 30, History 20, Law 30 or Psychology 30) and a Phys. Ed credit at either the 10, 20 or 30 level in order to graduate. At least two Practical & Applied Arts and/or Art Education credits are required. A minimum of five level 30 credits are necessary for graduation.

GRADE TEN REQUIREMENTS

To enter grade ten, a student must have a grade nine standing. A student who has not completed grade nine must contact the administration to arrange class selections.

Grade 10 students MUST enroll in ten classes (five per semester). The four elective classes are to be selected at the grade ten level unless permission is granted by administration. NOTE: students should seriously consider taking a physical education class in grade 10 to fulfill that requirement, especially those students who will want to take two or three sciences at the 20 and 30 level, and/or all level math courses.

The following modified Grade 10 courses may be offered: English A11, English B11, and Modified Math 11. The student may continue in non-modified classes at other levels provided he or she has attained the prerequisite. A student may register for modified Grade 10 courses only after consultation with parents, and administration.

GRADE ELEVEN REQUIREMENTS

Grade 11 students must enroll in a minimum of English 20, one Mathematics 11 course and one Science 20 course. Modified courses available at the Grade 11 level include English 21, Modified Math 21 and Science 21. A student may register for modified Grade 11 courses only after consultation with parents,

GRADE TWELVE REQUIREMENTS

Grade 12 students must enroll in at least eight classes. Grade 12 compulsory classes include English Language Arts 30A and English Language Arts 30B as well as one Canadian Studies class: History 30 or Native Studies 30. The total number of Grade 12 credits must be at least five. The remainder of the classes may be selected from Grade 10, Grade 11 and Grade 12 course selections.

Modified courses available at the Grade 12 level include English 31A and English

31B. A student may register for modified Grade 12 courses only after consultation with parents, and administration.

English Language Arts A10 focuses on communicating effectively and understanding the functions and forms of language. The course is organized around themes such as Canadian Frontiers and Homeland, Challenges, and the Unknown.

English Language Arts B10.......................................1 credit

Prerequisite: English 9English Language Arts B10 is an issue based course that is organized around the human concerns facing contemporary society. Suggested issued-based units include: Decisions, Environment/Technology and Equality.

English A11.........................1 credit

Prerequisite: English 9The course is intended to enhance the student's skills on an individual basis to give the student a basic knowledge of language requirements for survival in the work place.This modified course will fill the English credit requirements and will be counted toward graduation but these courses are not recognized by all post secondary institutions. Consultation with parents, and administration is needed prior to registering.

General English B11.............1 credit

Prerequisite: English 9This course enhances the writing mechanics to follow up on reading skills in English A11. Special emphasis is placed on reading and writing in relation to forms and their proper completion in the home and workplace.

This modified course will fill the English credit requirements and will be counted toward graduation but is not recognized by all post secondary institutions. Consultation with parents, and administration is needed prior to registering.

SOCIAL SCIENCES

History 10.....1 credit

Prerequisite: Social Studies 9

The goal is for students to understand the basic organization of industrialized, democratic societies. The past is used to show how fundamental social organizations developed in the 18th and 19th centuries.

This course stresses skill and attitude development towards a lifelong commitment to physical activities and fitness. Student will be required to have gym attire. Health topics are included to lead to a life of wellness. There may be some costs involved. Student will be required to complete 10 volunteer hours.

ARTS EDUCATION

Prerequisite: None Students explore materials and techniques in the challenge to creatively solve problems in art and become aware of historical, social and environmental factors which influence visual art and artists.

This course stresses the fundamentals of acting: mime, improvisation, voice, diction, movement and script work. It also includes theatre history and play production. It is a very practical course

An introduction to hand tools, machine woodworking and basic processes of construction.

Accounting 10........................1 credit

Prerequisite: None

An introduction to the fundamentals of keeping financial records for small business, covering topics such as opening a set of books, payroll, using the combination Journal, banking and financial reporting. Basic computerized bookkeeping is visited.

PAA10 Survey (Home Ec 10) - 1 credit

Prerequisite: None

Students will take ‘Core’ and selected modules from the following areas of study: 1) Food Studies

2) Clothing, Textiles and Fashion. Students are required to purchase fabric for projects.3) Housing & Interior

Designor focus on one of the three areas.

LANGUAGE ELECTIVE

Prerequisite: French 9

Spoken and written skills using present, future and past tenses. Various pronouns and irregular verbs are stressed. Students practice communicating with each other in French about a variety of themes. The main themes focus on the francophone culture.

Physical Science 20.................1 creditPrerequisite: Science 10

This course combines chemistry and physics in an integrated manner to investigate concepts related to heating and cooling, the foundations of chemistry, including the mole and quantitative analysis of molecules and chemical reactions, and the characteristics and properties of waves. An overarching theme is the study of the enterprise of public and private science as it occurs in agriculture, industry, and universities to help students better understand various physical science related career paths.

Health Science 20…1 CreditPrerequisite: Science 10

This course will challenge students to look at the health science field from holistic and analytic perspectives to provide a basis for making sound personal health choices. Students will apply information in the areas of medical knowledge systems and ethics, human anatomy and physiology, nutrition and metabolism, and medical diagnostics. Understanding the basic anatomy and physiology of the human body will provide a context for studying the normal and abnormal functioning of various body systems and the tools and techniques used to diagnose those systems. Students will also investigate the range of health science careers and post-secondary programs available in Saskatchewan.

Environmental Science 20 ………1 CreditPrerequisite: Science 10

Students will learn how to examine local and global environmental issues such as climate change, water, soil, and air quality, urbanization, bio resource management, waste handling and disposal, land-use planning, and the impacts of agriculture and industry on the environment

from scientific and Indigenous knowledge perspectives. Students will examine the role of environmental policies and ethics on decision making, and will investigate environmental science related careers. Student directed studies will lead to the development of environmental action plans.

Science 21............1 creditPrerequisite: Science 10 or Science 11

This is a general stream course which involves the study of ecological organization, atoms and elements, light and sound and an independent research unit. Science 21 is a modified science course which will meet the graduation requirements but is not recognized by all post secondary institutions. This course introduces the skills necessary for the solution of computing problems using the programming language Visual Basic.Net.

SOCIAL SCIENCE

Looks at the world of the twentieth century. With a concentration on warfare, there is a study of World War I, the rise of totalitarian states, World War II and other major conflicts that have occurred in the last half of the century.

This course attempts to increase a student's physical fitness, motor skills, knowledge of rules in the activities and social attitudes towards physical education. Emphasis is placed on leisure time activities, indoors and outdoors and personal fitness. Ten volunteer hours in the community are required.

Different materials and techniques are learned as students explore drawing/painting ideas, graphic design, sculpture, popular culture and the cultural communities of Canada.

PRACTICAL & APPLIED ARTS

Prerequisite: Accounting 10

This course covers the complete accounting cycle for a merchandising business including adjustments, financial statements, partnerships, voucher system and taxation. Computerized accounting systems are

expanded upon.

Construction & Carpentry 20 1 credit

Prerequisite: Construction 10

An in-depth study and application of woodworking and the basic processes of construction. Wall, floor and roof framing is covered in small building construction. Students will also build projects that cover cabinet making and furniture building. Students will also be required to pay for the lumber needed prior to ordering

Mechanical & Automotive 20 1 credit

Prerequisite: Mechanics 10

Based on the curriculum this course provides students with experience in the automotive service industry. This course deals with areas of study including multi cylinder engine removal and overhaul, brake systems, suspension systems, steering and alignment procedures and shop safety.

Communication Media 20..1 credit

Prerequisite:Communications Media 10

This course covers information processing tasks from a managerial perspective.  Students will advance their word processing, spreadsheet, web page design, and database skills.  A multi-media presentation for a business audience is also a key component of this course.  Students will learn how to produce quality business correspondence.

Prerequisite: NoneThis 100 hour course consists of 40 hours of classroom learning and 60 hours of workplace learning. This course provides students with an opportunity for career development and career planning. The career planning process is facilitated by a wide range of interactive activities as well as work experience components. The focus in Career and Work Exploration 20 is on the “Exploration” stage of the career development process.

French 20...................................1 creditPrerequisite: French 10This course is an extension of French 10 with emphasis on combining grammatical skills both oral and written in projects and compositions. The main theme involves travel.

The two units for the course are: Canada-Diverse Landscapes and Peoples, and Canada-Diverse Voices.

Prerequisite: English 20

This course focuses on human concerns in a global society. The course is organized around global issues and perspectives, and uses traditional and contemporary world literature to examine these issues. Students are expected to apply ideas and concepts rather than simply to recall content through the study of short stories, poetry, essays, one novel, one non-fiction book & Hamlet. The two units included in the course are The Human Condition-In Search of Self and The Social Experience - Beyond Personal Goals.

History 30 - Canadian Studies.....1 credit

Prerequisite: None

The goal of this course is to give students an overview of Canadian history. Students begin looking at aboriginal culture and the Europeans’ influence. The course travels through the road to confederation, and looks at each region’s unique history; all done from a Canadian perspective.

Native Studies 30 – Canadian Studies…………………………1 credit

Prerequisite: None

Native Studies is a branch of Canadian Studies 30. Students will study the historical and contemporary political relationship between First Nations and the Canadian government. The course focuses on Aboriginal and Treaty Rights, Canada’s assimilation policies, Land Claims, and Aboriginal Health and Justice.

SCIENCE

Biology 30...............................1 credit

Prerequisite: Environmental Science 20

Consists of five units: chemical basis of life, cell structure and function, genetics, animal systems and evolution.

Chemistry 30..........................1 credit

Prerequisite: Physical Science 20

The course covers: Thermochemistry, Collision Theory, Equilibrium Reactions, Acids/Bases, Electrochemistry, Precipitation Reactions, and a lab component.

Physics 30..............................1 creditPrerequisite: Physical Science or

Math 20/30 Pre-Calculus

A description of "natural happenings" with a mathematic and experimental focus. The course covers mechanics, forces, energy and motion and electricity.

Prerequisite: None

This is an overview course to look at the basics of the Canadian Legal system. Students learn about the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the impact that it has on Canadians. Later students learn about various types of law including: Criminal Law and criminal code, family law, Tort law and international law (immigration etc.). The course content is illustrated with case studies and controversial current issues.

Psychology 30 is the study of human development across the time spans of human life. The course will allow you to look at who you are, why you do the things you do, why others behave as they do, how and why certain things affect you as well as how to actualize your potential. Students will be encouraged to reassess preconceived ideas and gain a greater understanding of how humans think, feel and behave in each stage of development.

Calculus 30............................1 credit

Prerequisite: Math 30 Pre-Calculus

Calculus is the study of two mathematical topics, differentiation and integration. The purpose of this course is to acquaint students with the concepts of a first year university level calculus course.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical Education 30.......1 credit

Prerequisite: None

This course attempts to increase skill and attitude development towards a lifelong commitment to physical activities and fitness. Ten volunteer hours in the community are required.

PRACTICAL & APPLIED ARTS

Communication Media 30..1 credit

Prerequisite: Communication Media 20

This course covers information processing tasks from a managerial perspective.  Students will advance their word processing, spreadsheet, web page design, and database skills.  A multi-media presentation for a business audience is also a key component of this course.  Students will learn how to produce quality business correspondence.

Construction & Carpentry 30 ..1 credit

Prerequisite: Construction 20

Construction and Carpentry is designed to create an appreciation of the industry and to develop entry level skills. Opportunities to develop skills for personal use and to make a smooth transition from school to the workplace or post-secondary institutions will be presented to students. Construction 30 focuses on cabinetry and furniture building. Students design, build and finish a master project. Students will need to pay for all materials prior to ordering lumber.

Mechanical & Automotive 30 ………………..........................1 credit

Prerequisite: Mechanical & Automotive 20

This course provides students with information related to the automotive service industry. It deals with electronic and fuel systems of the modern automobile. Students also will cover electricity, electronics, alternators, starting systems, ignition systems and fuel systems. Students use automotive scanners and testers to determine system faults on computer controlled electronic systems.

Students will cultivate skills that can be used daily in food preparation, knowledge to make wise choices in purchasing food, a study of nutrition and an awareness of career in the food industry.

Life Transitions 30................1 credit

This course is made up of the following modules which represent well-being, relationships, resource management and career planning: Life Roles, Health Self-care, Conflict in Relationships, Money Management, Career Planning, Independent Living, Parenting, Job Search and Sexual and Reproductive Health.

Career and Work Exploration A30 and B30 ....................................... 1 credit

Prerequisite: None

This 100 hour course consists of up to 25 hours of classroom instruction and up to 75 hours of workplace learning. Career and Work Exploration A30, B30 maximizes opportunities for students to access the workplace. These courses offer opportunities for students to experience career choices and develop entry level skills in a workplace setting.

ARTS EDUCATION

Visual Art 30..............................1 credit

While using various techniques and materials, students examine change, social issues, cultures and personal identity related to art. Due to the nature of the course, a high degree of self-discipline is required. Although there is no prerequisite it is helpful to have taken either Visual Art 10 or 20.

Drama 30 ……………………. 1 credit

Prerequisite: None

All the world’s a stage…..Drama 30 continues to develop an understanding of the processes and elements involved in creating dramatic work. Acting skills will be refined while doing small and large projects. Theatre History and project critiques will be examined. This course combines theory and practical application of technique and requires a high degree of self-discipline on a consistent basis.

LANGUAGE ELECTIVES

French 30...............................1 credit

Prerequisite: French 20

This course refines and polishes the student's knowledge of French and introduces advanced grammatical structures. It strengthens fluency in oral and written skills.

SHIFT

Shift Class ………………….. 2 credits

Shift is a class which combines ELA A30 and History 30. Several issues which affect Canada will be explored. Most assignments will combine English, History and technological aspects into one assignment which allows students to explore these concepts in greater depth which allows for great learning. Issues covered include: racism, English/French relations, poverty, gender issues and regionalism. The nature of this class allows for a low teacher to student ratio that would be of a great benefit to students.
