This initiative allows campuses to take a holistic approach to assessment in order to better document and understand data related to:

• student experiences and learning outcomes• operational benchmarking• leadership best practices

More than 50 institutions took part in the inaugural year of the Consortium, to great acclaim. Reports indicate participation resulted in enhanced services, maximized resources, and the advancement of institutional goals.college and university efforts in assessment, analysis, and knowledge creation to further the practice of Student Affairs.

The Consortium was developed in response to requests for the varied pieces of assessment so members could better see the big picture. By providing beneficial connections between institutions, associations, data points, professionals, and promising practices, NASPA has taken the benchmarking and assessment practice.Gwen Dungy Executive Director NASPA

The NASPA Assessment and Knowledge Consortium provides a set of assessment studies that approach Student Affairs in an unprecedented, holistic, and comprehensive manner. Led by NASPA, and powered by StudentVoiceassessment platform and expert consultation to help Student Affairs professionals:

• demonstrate the impact of programs and activities on student learning• produce focused, data-• benchmark with national and peer comparison data• connect data to strategic goals and institutional priorities

An annual subscription to the Consortium will allow for caassessment projects. Each year, the Consortium will highlight different program areas for data collection and analysis.

Student Conduct, Campus Security, and Safety

The Student Conduct, Campus Security, and Safety survey instrument was designed

to provide an accurate portrait of today's college students’ perceptions of campus

safety, security, and conduct experiences. Students were asked about their:

• feelings of safety at varying campus locations;

• safety concerns;

• utilization of on-campus safety mechanisms;

• experiences as a victim of crime, if applicable

• ways in which they learn about campus safety;

• conduct policies and procedures;

• the student judicial process;

• attitudes toward the policies and procedures; and

• behaviors, values, and beliefs.

In addition to institution-specific data, institutions administering this survey

have access to national and peer comparison benchmarking data. The Safety, Security,

and Conduct survey is part of the NASPA Assessment and Knowledge Consortium.

The survey sample was a random sample of 3000 currently enrolled UNCG

undergraduate students. The survey was administered by email and several follow-up

reminders were sent. No incentives for filling out the survey were provided. The

response rate was approximately 11%. Responses rates at UNCG average between 10%-

12% on surveys administered electronically. Although the preferred response rate is

generally 25%-30%, using a random and representative sample allows for

generalizability to the campus population as a whole.

UNCG Fall 2009 headcount enrollment was 17,535 (16,088.5 FTE), including

14,311 (13,582 FTE) undergraduates and 3,224 (2,506.5 FTE) graduate students. 12,774

(89%) of undergraduate and 1,318 (41%) of graduate students were enrolled on a full-

time basis. 67% of undergraduate students were female. 7% of undergraduate and 17%

7

of graduate students were from out-of-state. 22% of undergraduate and 13% of

graduate students were African-American. 31% of undergraduate students lived in

residence halls (source: Institutional Research, 2009 Profile).

The survey was sent on September 21, 2009. Students received three reminders

to respond and the survey was closed on November 3, 2009. Interestingly, during this

time period, students received multiple campus alert emails and text messages to

inform them of possible safety related concerns. These types of communications may

have had the potential to impact which students responded to the survey and how they

answered particular items on the survey.

Why did you not report the crime?

Spring 2009 National Average

The incident was too minor to report.

I did not want to take the time to report it.

I did not know how to report it. I was afraid of retaliation by

the offender if I did. The offender was a friend.

It was too personal. I was doing something illegal

at the time. I was equally involved.

I didn't think the police could do anything.
