OVERVIEWOFTHEQUEENELIZABETHHOSPITAL The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH) is part of the region Central Adelaide Local Health
Network (CALHN) This also includes the Royal Adelaide Hospital, St. Margaret’s Rehabilitation
Hospital and Hampstead.
Our local community consists of 210,000 residents with generally high socio-economic needs:
– Multi-cultural and social diversity
– Ageing population
– High levels of chronic disease
– Significant industrial estates
– Urban regeneration
We have 311 acute care in-patient beds, including 31 Mental Health beds. In addition 49 same-
day beds to accommodate DSU, CIS, PAC, ECT and GEU unit. St Margaret’s Rehabilitation
Hospital (SMRH) at Semaphore is part of TQEH. It has 48 beds, 44 used for rehabilitation and
post acute care, and 4 for respite care.
Each year we have approximately 46,000 inpatient admissions, 210,000 outpatient visits, 39,000
emergency admissions and 3300 ICU bed days

NURSINGSERVICEPHILOSOPHY
The nursing staff of The Queen Elizabeth Hospital upholds the right of all persons to receive safe, effective, competent individualised care with respect to their culture, ethnicity, sexuality and spirituality. Nursing staff must be prepared through education, personal experience and professional development to practice in accordance with nationally accepted standards.
PURPOSE
To provide quality, individualised, cost effective care, (with compassion), during the person's episode of illness, and with appropriate liaison with the community in order to provide continuity of care.
STATEMENTOFOBJECTIVES
Ensure that nurses practice in accordance with best practice and code of conduct standards. Provide comprehensive nursing care which is non-discriminatory and is based on the specific needs of patients and takes into account their rights, cultural and religious beliefs. Improve the quality of nursing care by assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care which is designed to address identified actual and potential health problems, aimed at facilitating maximum independence and which incorporates health promotion, education, rehabilitation. Involve the patient and family care givers in decisions regarding the management of all phases of his/her care and to establish a therapeutic relationship. Establish and maintain effective interdepartmental/interdivisional, inter and intra professional relationships and communication. Foster and maintain good public relations and to encourage consumer feedback about the nature and effectiveness of the care received. Provide continuity of care by co-operating with and participating in, co-ordination of health care services within the community. Ensure that principles relating to confidentiality and right to privacy are incorporated into nursing practice. Be actively involved in the evaluation of products for use in the provision of care and to ensure that those selected are safe and cost effective. Involve all levels of Nurses in decision making processes and ensure they accept responsibility and accountability for their actions. Develop and implement staff development programs (and in collaboration with the University of South Australia, Higher Degree Courses) designed to meet the needs of Nurses, the organisation, and the community. Participate in research programs aimed to improve the quality of care by ensuring that relevant research findings and technological advances are integrated into nursing practice. Maintain a performance management system, which demands competence and encourages excellence and progression from novice to expert nurse, and which contributes to career satisfaction and advancement. Promote measures to assist The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Health Service to meet it's commitment to environmental conservation. Secure a safe work environment by ensuring that the policies (standards) of Occupational, Health and Safety are promoted and maintained.

HOUSEKEEPING
Housekeeping guidelines for a successful placement are as follows.
UNIFORM
Education provider protocols for uniform and correct identification must be adhered to.
Students not wearing correct uniform will be sent home and have to make-up clinical time.
ROSTERS
Negotiate the first week of your roster by the end of your first day and give to your facilitator before you leave.
Ensure a balance between early and late shifts. Your facilitator will try to see you according to your roster.
Any changes to your roster must be negotiated with your facilitator and the ward.
If you cannot attend an allocated shift you MUST contact ward
– ward by 0630 for an early shift AND clinical facilitator after 0800
– ward by 1230 for a late shift AND clinical facilitator
– sick certificate must be photocopied and given to the facilitator for their records
– opportunity to make up any lost clinical time will be negotiated with Nursing HR and the Training Organisation.
PROBLEMS/INJURIES
Please notify facilitator and ward Team Leader/Clinical Service Coordinator of any problems or concerns experienced on a shift as soon as possible.
All injuries must be reported and appropriate documentation completed.
CLINICALVISITS
Your facilitator is expected to visit or contact you on a regular basis to discuss your progress.
Please liaise with your organisation directly if you have any concerns.
ASSESSMENTREQUIREMENTS
Please bring any logbooks / workbooks with you every day.
Do NOT leave it until the last week to ask TQEH staff to complete them.

PRIOR to commencement of your placement you are expected to provide proof of 100% mastery of medication calculation to your CLINICAL FACILITATOR.
– Failure to do so will result in CANCELLATION of your placement.
All students participating in medication rounds must be under the direct and continuous supervision of a Registered Nurse as per the table below.

GUIDELINESFORQUALITYDOCUMENTATION
You are expected to document in accordance with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council Guidelines and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Nursing Documentation Standards, Criteria and Guidelines (copy available via TQEH intranet).
All documentation must be clear, concise, confidential, client centred, collaborative, correct, consecutive, contemporary and complete to provide:
– continuum of quality patient care
– evaluation of patient care provided
– information for research, audit and epidemiology
– accountability and legislation requirements
– professional responsibility
– provision of information for medico-legal purposes
– resource management
All entries must be
– in black / blue pen
– dated and timed
– legible
– use a standard format to reduce errors/omissions (ie systems approach)
Signing and Counter-signing
– sign and print name, designation and name of your training institution (e.g. ANMF)
– MUST be countersigned by either an Enrolled Nurse with Diploma or Registered Nurse.

CARPARKING Car parking is available onsite and in the surrounding areas [refer to attached map].
MULTI‐DECKPARKING
The multi-deck parking is only available to staff members that hold a TQEH Parking Permit – as per the guidelines for staff parking.
The permit is registered with the parking office (and valid for the vehicle you are in).
Fines do apply for parking without a permit.
ONSITEVISITORPARKING
On-site car parking is available with a fee-payment (Maximum $8 per day)
Weekly parking permit is available on application from the Car Parking office
STREETPARKING
Car parking is available on the median Port Rd, or in the surrounding streets of the hospital with sign-posted time limits.
You may need to move your car in break times to remain within the council limits.
NB Charles Sturt Council may change parking restrictions without notification. Be sure to
