Why do I need a Plan?Success in hockey is like a PYRAMID and no different than the corporate world: A sequentially smaller percentage of players moves up to higher levels because quite simply, there are fewer openings. Many times, it’s not the best players who succeed. Talent, character and work ethic are simply the cost of entry.

“But I’m an elite player. Won’t the scouts just ‘find me’?”The top 2% of elite student-athletes receive unsolicited offers from Junior and College teams without the need to market themselves.

Student Athlete Planning Services Inc.| 112-3 Everson Drive| Toronto, ON M2N 7C2 | (416) 880-2518

The vast majority – almost 98% of several thousand players in Canada and the US vying for those few open roster spots - need a master plan so they know how to target properly and market their personal brand (name, skills, character and fit) to Recruiters.

Think about it…

A recruiter attends your game (amongst the dozens he watches each month) in search of a few players to fill key roster spots. On this night alone, he is watching 2 goalies, 12 Defensemen and anywhere from 3 to 4 lines of forwards on BOTH teams before he moves on to the next game.

With up to 38 skaters to observe, it is easy to get overlooked. Proactively marketing yourself to get on the radar of a team’s scouting staff will afford you the attention you need. We not only help you target. We no only help you plan. We also help you create a brand you can market to key decision makers.

We will meet with both player and parents to capture your family’s desired educational and athletic goals. It’s important to be open, honest and candid so we can all determine how prepared you are to make the sacrifices and put the time in to get to the next level.

STEP 1: PLAYER/FAMILY ASSESSMENT

Student Athlete Planning Services Inc.| 112-3 Everson Drive| Toronto, ON M2N 7C2| (416) 880-2518

We will use the details from your Family Assessment to develop your customized Key Milestone plan. This is your ‘bible’ and is intended to keep you on track with every key task and date that must be attained as part of your MAP, whether it is over 1 year or 3 years; whether it is Tier II, Major Junior or NCAA focused.

STEP 2: ESTABLISHING YOUR KEY MILESTONES

Together, we will help you build your personal marketing toolkit which will create the required awareness amongst your targeted recruiters of who you are, the strengths you can bring to their organizations and how you can contribute to their success. Video is a crucial tool and the responsibility of the client; however, we will guide you on how to produce it and if we must edit, we will identify a fee in advance.

STEP 5: BUILDING YOUR MARKETING TOOLKIT

We will help you conduct a comprehensive review of your academic status and your admissions eligibility based on your school average (GPA) and SAT scores. If you wish to go to school, it is critical you stay on track…or get on track!

STEP 3: ACADEMIC PLANNING

There are 58 D1 schools, 78 D3’s, 60 Major Juniors, 16 USHL clubs, 26 NAHL and 144 Tier II teams. We’ll help you identify the ‘best fit’ schools or teams which match your desired geography, your playing style and academic standards.

STEP 4: TEAM TARGETING

YOUR M.A.P. (ACTION PLAN)

While the M.A.P process may take 2 to 3 weeks to complete, it is perpetual; that is, until you are signed to your targeted team, your M.A.P. will be updated consistently so it is current, relevant and persuasive.

What is the role of the Student Athlete? It is important to understand that Student Athlete Planning Services does not initiate contact with coaches on your behalf at the Junior A, Major Junior or College levels. We do not send unsolicited mass mailings (Eg. Resume’s) to hundreds of coaches on your behalf. We consciously place the onus on the student-athlete and his/her family:

Coaches and GM’s tell us they are very skeptical and cautious about unsolicited contact from third party companies who have a business and financial interest in a player they represent.

They want to hear from you, the elite student-athlete!

What happens if or when I need an Agent?

We are often asked by our minor hockey and Junior clients why they should hire a fee-based service like Student Athlete rather than retain a commission-based agent who only gets paid when their clients generate salary. If you are a minor hockey or Junior client, an agent’s ability and desire to invest time in a non-revenue generating athlete is very limited, especially if he represents a large stable of athletes with the hope that one makes it to the Pro’s.

When the time arises, we recommend our clients to agency partners. Commission-based Player Agent services provide representation for athletes preparing for their Major Junior or NHL drafts or who are already participating at the Major Junior and professional levels.

We are not agents. We are a coaching, planning and marketing service. But we do recognize there may come a day when our clients require an agent.

An agent is required in advance of a player’s Major Junior or Pro Draft and/or when contract negotiation, lobbying and communication with higher level GM’s becomes necessary.

Unless you are a highly ranked Major Junior draft prospect (based on Central Scouting), you fall into the same category as 98% of elite hockey players. You may very well make Pro one day, but you’ll need to take a less direct path through Midget or Tier II en route to College Hockey or Major Junior. For our time and expertise, Student Athlete charges a fee like any business. We will work hard for you to ensure it is hard-earned money well spent.
