Student and Parent Guide to Extra–Curricular Options
2016 –17
2
Please note that most Extra activities are offered free of charge and rely solely on the enthusiasm and commitment of Gordano’s staff. Therefore, where relevant, we would welcome the same commitment to attendance on the students’ part, particularly in Drama, Music and PE where special projects or fixtures are planned for during after-school sessions. Please also note that it is unavoidable that some activities will clash with others from the perspective of some of our students. While it is not possible to rearrange days to suit individuals, we will try to rotate some activities from one term to the next, where possible.

Latin is the key to many aspects of the modern world. It helps us to understand more English words and spell them correctly, succeed in many careers involving technical language, learn French, Spanish and Italian, find out about the origins of our civilisation and make more sense of the world today. Thousands of new specialised words are based on Latin (and Greek) words to name new industrial and technical inventions, and learning Latin helps us to make sense of the terminology of science and technology. You will be taught Latin once a week, either during lunchtime or after school and you will follow the Cambridge Classics Project Course. A knowledge of Latin dramatically improves your range of vocabulary, accuracy of spelling and clarity of expression – i.e. the ability to communicate in your own language. This is hardly surprising since over 50% of common English words come from Latin.

Beginning at the end of October, Flying Start Challenge is a regional completion for students to design and build glider aircraft that can be thrown by hand. Supported by many large companies in the region including Rolls-Royce, BAE systems and Air-bus, I will be looking to enter a maximum of 3 teams into the a competition at the end of term 3, to compete against other schools from the Bristol, South Gloucestershire, and North Somerset area. Should one of our teams be successful it could lead to them qualifying for the South West regional final. In your teams (no larger than 4), students will build prototypes to test their design before building their glider, keeping within budget of an imaginary £100,000. During the competi-tion, the winners are decided over a combination of throwing the glider furthest, keeping to budget, presenting to judges about the process of designing and building their glider as well as demonstrating their understanding through a quiz. Meeting once a week, students will also be supported by a representative from the aeronautical industry.

3. Growing food on the school site to be sold/used locally to cut down on food miles

Tutor: Gina Reinge Skill Set: Practical, Confidence and
Interpersonal
Kiawan Goju Ryu Karate - Daigaku Karate Kai (DKK) is an exciting karate
system that incorporates striking, locks, throws, grappling, weapons, pad
work and fitness plus so much more.
The style of karate we practise is Okinawan Goju Ryu, meaning hard-soft
school of empty hand. It has traditional roots and training methods and is
still evolving as a modern and effective fighting and self-defence system.
The system has been adapted for children with the aim being to improve
self confidence, respect for one another and a desire to improve on a daily
basis. There are currently over 200 juniors training with DKK ranging from
white to black belt in Portishead and Bristol.
The club instructor is Gina Reinge 1st degree black belt and is overseen by
Dan Lewis 6th degree (Art teacher at Gordano). Sessions are Wednesday
3.30-4.30pm.
