Procedure1. Recognizing individual accomplishments is as important as recognizing

whole –group successes. Our competitive “I win, you lose” culture too often doesn’t support taking pleasure in accomplishments of others. Create opportunities that encourage students to appreciate the efforts of their peers.

2. We don’t often recognize students’ talents and competencies if they aren’t used in the classroom. When you acknowledge that students do important things in their lives outside of school, you have the power to help students broaden their definitions of success and excellence, as well as break down stereotypical views of their classmates.

Lesson: Deciding on Advisory Activities

MaterialsWrite the Essential Questions on the board.Handout: “Suggestions for Advisory Activity”.

Procedure1. Read the essential questions:

o What kind of activities can we do throughout the year to build a sense of team?

o What can we do to celebrate the talents of the members of the group?

2. Read over handout: “Suggestions for Advisory Activity”. Identify the activities the students would like to participate in throughout the year. Brainstorm any other activities the group would like to do.

3. Create a monthly calendar for the year so students are aware of the activities planned. Have the students transfer the activities into their agenda book at the beginning of each month or for the whole year... make sure you are aware of school-planned activities, for example fundraising, Adopt-a- Family, etc….many of these school-based initiatives may be in the agendas already.

Lesson: Drop Everything and Read

3. Whenever the group decides, the whole group will drop everything and read for the advisory period. There will be groups that really enjoy that time and others that would prefer to do other things. Read your group and carry on.

Lesson: End of the Year Rituals

Learning OutcomesStudents will focus on closure and celebration. Students will reflect on the school year and what they have learned, appreciated and experienced in your advisory class.

MaterialsWrite the Essential Questions on the board

Procedure1. Activities that focus on closure and celebration are important aspects of

the end of the school year. We get so caught up in the testing and grading cycle that it takes incredible discipline to invite students to stop and reflect on the school year. Develop rituals that give students the opportunity to reflect on what they have learned, appreciated and experienced in your advisory program.

2. Give every student the name of someone in the advisory. Their task is to write a note to that person that might include something they appreciated about this person; something they got to know about this person that they found interesting; something this person did in advisory that they thought was cool, funny, smart, impressive or unexpected. Collect the cards and pass them out on the last day.

3. Make the time to write a personal note to each student, noting something you appreciated about them this year, a positive change you noticed as the year progressed, a challenge they met, one way they earned your respect and admiration and/or something you will remember about them.

4. Create a Memory Bulletin Board: Students can write their responses to any of these sentence starters:

o One thing I won’t forget about advisory this year is……..o I am no longer uncomfortable about………Advisory has helped

5. Assessing your Advisory Goals: Review the goals and expectations your advisory set for this year. Discuss whether the advisory met the goals/expectations.

6. Letter to New Students: ask students to write a letter to students who will be entering their school. Here are some ideas for what students might include in their letters.

o What can you look forward to doing/learning/contributing in the advisory group?

o What are two things you liked best this year and two things you would like to change?

o What was your biggest challenge this year? How did you meet this challenge? What did you learn about yourself?

o What did you find fun or interesting?o If students want to learn the ropes to be successful in school,

Lesson: Exploratorium

Learning OutcomeStudents will explore different interests, issues, projects, and topics.

MaterialsWrite the Essential Questions on the board

Procedure1. Read over the Essential Questions.

2. Brainstorm a list of activities and projects people would like to do during the year. Each student can then vote for three to five choices on the list. Once you have the top ten preferences, you and the students can create a schedule for when to do what during the course of the school year. For example, the year of the Olympics would be a great event to follow as a group.

3. Another option is to reach consensus on two or three activities that the Advisory will do on a weekly or biweekly basis for six to eight weeks. Each student signs up for one activity and continues to meet and work with that activity group for each Exploratorium session.

Lesson: If I Had a Wish

ProcedureThis is a circle activity that gives students a chance to express their wishes, dreams and hopes to their peers. Invite students to think about how they would complete the following sentence.

o “If I had a wish that would be granted, it would be…………………..”, and then share with the group.

Lesson: Passionate Presenters

Learning OutcomesStudents will present to the class.

Essential QuestionsWhat would I like to share with the group? What is my personal passion?

2. Let students know that each student will make a presentation at least one time during the school year. Students can choose to:

o Share something about a topic on which they are an expert.o Teach something to everyone in the group.o Read a passage that has personal meaning for them.o Facilitate a discussion of a topic of their choice.o Make a choice from the Presentation Topics.

Lesson: Thought or Story for the Month

Procedure1. During the year, ask each student to contribute a thought or story. If

this is a regular routine, every student will have at least one turn. These can be personal stories, or inspiring/thought-provoking ones they found in a book or magazine.

2. Keep books around that students can draw from—if there is some free time, have students review the books.

Lesson: Games … Brain Teasers … Puzzles …Energizers

As educators, we realize that there are times when it’s appropriate to simply “play”…to have fun together and get to know one another in this way.

This theme contains a selection of games, brain teasers and puzzles which you could use at these times. Try to find ways to vary the settings…individual work, pair work, “races” pitting one group against another, etc. This will allow continued “team building” to occur. Please be reminded of the purpose and outcomes of the student advisory program in determining which activities you put into play—promote positive relationships, foster a sense of belonging and develop social-emotional learning.

Several resources in the Advisory Library available from each school implementation team have some very worthwhile activities to explore. Check out the following books:

The Advisory Guide: Designing and Implementing Effective Advisory Programs in Secondary Schools (2004) by Rachel Poliner and Carol Miller Lieber

Are You More Like? 1001colorful quandaries for quality conversations (2002) by Chris Cavert and Susana Acosta

Games (& other stuff) for Teachers: Classroom Activities that Promote Pro-social Learning (1999) by Chris Cavert, Laurie Frank & Friends;

It is assumed that teachers already have similar activities in their classroom repertoire. Theatre games and drama exercises are other good sources of activities. Add these to your collection, and continue to build and share these valuable resources. Above all, have fun!

Procedures1. Prepare and overhead with an 8x8 grid of boxes2. Label the top boxes A through H and the side boxes 1 through 93. Pass out a sheet of paper for each pair or group (however you divide your

class)4. Instruct each group to duplicate your grid on their sheet of paper and

choose any 3 boxes on their grid to place their battleships. Keep their sheet well hidden from other groups. They must also name each of their ships (encourage fun names)

5. Now one group at a time calls out a box… (.i.e. B5)6. If any group has one of their ships in that box they must stand up and say,

“You’ve hit our ship and say the name of the ship. The teacher then marks the spot on the overhead using the battleship name. If no ship is sunk they simply mark the spot with an X.

7. The winner is the group that maintains the most amount of ships when time expires.

8. A small prize for the winning group….a chocolate bar, muffin…whatever you choose could be a nice touch.
