Servicing Hubble
• Hubble Servicing still has strong public support
• GSFC had a good PDR for robotic servicing
but• NASA HQ still not supportive of this
option• O’Keefe has left NASA; Mike Griffin
expected new Administrator (April 12 confirmation hearing)
• There is congressional support for Hubble: Udall, Ehlers; Boehlert questioned NASA plan
• Senator Mikulski has vowed publicly to fight for Hubble; it is a top priority for her
MSNBC Report on PDR
Post PDR De-Brief Comments
• “Incredible amount of work, nothing to preclude going forward”• “No show stoppers, congratulations to the Team; overwhelmed by depth, breadth,
commitment; outstanding review”• “Kudos, world-class team working under terrible conditions”• “Great review, congratulations, no show stoppers”• “Excellent job, Team has identified all the risks; no liens to proceeding to CDR.
Compliments to Leckrone for superb science talk; when you believe in something strongly enough, you’ll do it; this (HRSDM) is the right thing for NASA to be doing”
• “Excellent review; thank you to Mike Weiss for an extraordinary closing statement”• “A+, no issues, congratulations, all SRR RFAs have been answered”• “The word ‘impossible’ is not in the vocabulary of this Team”• “Nothing to preclude going to CDR”• “Incredibly impressed with the Team; honor to be named to this Review Board; I’m
inspired by this Team”• “No major issues, will write few minor RFAs” (this from the Astronaut Office, as
reported by Dennis Dillman [the same Astronaut Office that last year was very worried about the risks of installing COS])
• “Congratulations to the HST Team for a successful PDR; last Summer, we thought they were nuts to have PDR in Spring ‘05” (Dillman)

Useful facts for SM4
The importance of Hubble Science with SM4 has been endorsed by every community and NASA planning committee in addition to special Nobel-level groups: Bahcall & Lanzerotti
Costs to NASA science programs of Hubble servicing by the Space Shuttle are well established at $120M/yr
NASA stated publicly on February 17, 2005 that costs of SM4 were included in NASA’s 5-yr plan and are not a factor in the decision whether or not to carry out SM4. Safety was the only factor.
Congress appropriates funds annually for Space Shuttle flights in a single budget line regardless of destination. This line would not get a “refund” from science for a flight to service Hubble.
Assertions that Hubble cannot be serviced for less than $1 billion are not supported by the facts. Astronomy, NASA, and the public will benefit enormously by upgrading Hubble through another servicing mission.
