Rules of this Brainjam

Page 4: Structured brain jam

Shall we address:◦ The biggest problems in Government

◦ Defining the next steps in Government 2.0

◦ Less techy – coming up with a common language

◦ Take time to invest in your civic life – identifying social needs to navigate government’s direction

◦ Other ideas?

You Have A Choice

Page 5: Structured brain jam

What is Gov 2.0?◦ Doing something unexpected◦ Being where the citizen wants them to be◦ Government as a platform – open gov

Using social media, new and emerging technologies to better provide services for citizens

Open the data Enabling citizens to help from the top down The power of people is critical Two way communication between Gov/Citizen Information, conversation, data, action

Go beyond talking, start doing

Defining the next steps in Government 2.0

Page 6: Structured brain jam

Let’s stop talking numbers, lets talk movement

The shift was clear The next move is not as clear Are we starting to see the next evolution to

the next wave of citizen engagement with Government on a worldwide scale?

The Shift from 1.0 to 2.0

Page 7: Structured brain jam

Where are we are currently?

Where are we are currently? Widely distributed networks

◦ Can now connect with others◦ Lots more data◦ Quit throwing data out there and not doing

anything with it◦ Problems cannot be solved within 140 characters◦ Apps are not the end solution◦ Not ALL Citizens are software developers – how

can we make the data meaningful to those we are not internet savvy!

Page 8: Structured brain jam

More of a sense of new business opportunities Then open source movement– how can we

reduce the amount of RFPs that are calling for the same or similar solutions across and inside the same agencies?

Shorter gap between government and startups – they need to see the need.

Government needs to be sexy to innovators Giving it all away for free --- answers?? Problem is hiring drupal developers – see rock

creek!!

… next

Page 9: Structured brain jam

Not an end all be all solution Technology is being developed in many

languages and platforms Contests - how do you go on from the end

of the run? What if you win, what if you don’t? Feedback!!

Ideas being taken without permission – when you submit to the system, how can you prevent someone else you using your solution.

Open Source

Google – CDC Apps for …. Mobile Solutions

What successes have we had?

Page 11: Structured brain jam

How can we ask you to give a little to give a lot? Question of access – if you have an idea for

Government – but not always having the resources

Someone is listening, but is the question(s) being asked?

We need this, who can help us? Bartering? “SIMPLE.CO” as an example (Dominic

Campbell - UK) ◦ Getting office space◦ Mentoring◦ Can we barter – no, should they ? ---yes

Winning the Future

Page 12: Structured brain jam

Reputational Capital (vs. Bartering) The government can review (contributions)

submissions and provide feedback Government hasn’t gotten the contribution

problems

Money vs. the Poorhouse
