Engineering Design and Research Centre

The Engineering Design and Research Centre (EDRC) of ECC at Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Mumbai and Middle East offers fast and accurate solutions for design engineering and consultancy services for all types of construction projects. It has extensive experience in analyzing the static and dynamic loads of plant and machinery including structural loads through finite element analysis. EDRC employs over 600 experienced design engineers/technical personnel who meet every specific need of the customer.

L&T’s team of specialist engineers with long experience in quality management and quality assurance meets every stringent standard and specification – both national and international - including the increasing demands of its customers.

Meticulous planning and optimized deployment of resources for fabrication and erection helps L&T execute the most complex and critical steel structures with high quality, speed and economy to the complete satisfaction of the client.

Steel Constructions The number of all-steel construction projects built by ECC for various customers is steadily increasing. Over the past 20 years, ECC has consumed more than one lakh tonnes of steel for industrial structures as well as related infrastructure facilities. ECC’s fabrication shops at Kancheepuram, Pondicherry and Pithampur have been meeting this growing need for fabricated steel for domestic and international customers. L&T’s state-of-the-art modular fabrication facility at Hazira in Gujarat is one of the largest in the whole of South Asia.

In addition to bridge structures, industrial plants and long span storage structures, steel structures have become a major component of multiplexes. Airport terminal buildings, hangars, sports stadiums and the new look railway station buildings are now using a combination of artistically created and aesthetically pleasing steel structures.

The new station buildings built by L&T at Chennai for metro rail transit system (MRTS) have adopted the barrel vault, aerofoil roofing systems as well as cable stay type of roof.

For the 1.2 MTPA state-of-the-art Lafarge Surma Cement Plant at Chhatak, Sunamganj in north east Bangladesh, L&T constructed a 17.5 km long cross country belt conveyor for transporting limestone and shale from

Construction of this conveyor with horizontal and vertical curves involved challenges such as tough terrains, forest areas and inclement weather conditions. Considered an engineering marvel, the conveyor has a unique feature of climbing arrangements made on steep slopes with elevated steel galleries for the traveling of motorized maintenance car.
