SIMM FOR MINES AND PLANTS AIM The aim of the course is to give an overview of the structural design and inspection considerations for mine plant structures and silos. WHO SHOULD ATTEND It is intended that the course will assist Mechanical or Electrical Mine Engineers who are not necessarily familiar with Structural Engineering concepts, as well as Structural Engineers whose background and experience are primarily in consulting and design services. INCLUDES Discussion of concepts with reference to photographs of actual deterioration of structures. COURSE OUTLINE Module 1: Design Philosophy Module 2: Structural Materials Module 3: Structural Members Module 4: Inspection Structures Module 5: Inspection of Silos ATTENDEES WILL GAIN - Better understanding of key aspects of the behaviour of steel and concrete as structural materials. - Better understanding of key aspects of structural members in tension, compression and bending. - Ability to visually evaluate the condition of structural members, or if necessary, specify additional assessment by experts or by testing - Knowledge of one formal system of quantitatively reporting the condition of structural members. Geoff has over 40 years' experience across a broad spectrum of structural engineering. He has worked at Senior Design Engineer level for a large steel construction contractor, as an associate professor of structural engineering at a major university, as principal civil and structural engineer in the mining industry, as a partner with WAH and currently as Director of GK Structural Consulting. His specific competencies are in steel design, structural vibration, forensic structural engineering and design of the structures associated with mine shafts, underground operations and materials handling machinery. His experience in these areas has included preparation of specifications, design, review of design and structural inspection and monitoring. SIMM FOR MINES AND PLANTSAIM The aim of the course is to give an overview of the structural design and inspection

considerations for mine plant structures and silos.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND It is intended that the course will assist Mechanical or Electrical Mine Engineers

who are not necessarily familiar with Structural Engineering concepts, as well as

Structural Engineers whose background and experience are primarily in consulting

and design services.

INCLUDES Discussion of concepts with reference to photographs of actual deterioration of

structures.

COURSE OUTLINEModule 1: Design Philosophy

Module 2: Structural Materials

Module 3: Structural Members

Module 4: Inspection Structures

Module 5: Inspection of Silos

ATTENDEES WILL GAIN- Better understanding of key aspects of the behaviour of steel and

concrete as structural materials.

- Better understanding of key aspects of structural members in tension,

compression and bending.

- Ability to visually evaluate the condition of structural members, or if

necessary, specify additional assessment by experts or by testing

- Knowledge of one formal system of quantitatively reporting the

condition of structural members.

Geoff has over 40 years'

experience across a broad

spectrum of structural

engineering. He has

worked at Senior Design

Engineer level for a large

steel construction

contractor, as an associate

professor of structural

engineering at a major

university, as principal civil

and structural engineer in

the mining industry, as a

partner with WAH and

currently as Director of GK

His specific competencies

are in steel design,

structural vibration, forensic

structural engineering and

design of the structures

associated with mine
