Sustainability is not always included in the vocabulary of structural engineers.Asweadvanceourbuiltenvironmentandcreatebuildingsthatarehigherperforming,ifnotnetpositiveenergy,theglobalimpactof our construction materials—where they come from, how they are
processed,what theyaremadeof—become increasingly important.Thispresentationwillprovideanoverviewofsustainablestrategiesfor structural engineers andwill provide a deepdive intowhat theCarbonLeadershipForum,alongwithseveralinstitutions,arelearn-ingaboutembodiedcarbonbenchmarks.Severalcasestudieswillbepresentedtocoverarangeofbestpractices—atop10list—forstructuralengineers,alongwithsomeexamplesofparametricanalysistoolstoinformourdesignprocess.Thetalkwillinspireadiscussionaboutthestructuralengineers’commitmenttocarbonreductionandtheroleweallneedtoplayinadvancingbestpractices.

ThebeginningofAprilalsomarkstheendofourRefresherCourse,wehopethattheAprilexamtakerswillconfirmthepositivetrendthatwehaveobserved:thepassrateforattendeesofthe2015–16SEAOIRefresherCoursewas69percentcomparedtoanoverallaverageof48percent.ThisAprilalsomarksthefifthanniversaryoftheNCEESlaunchingofthenewformat16-hourStructuralExam.Itisimportanttoremindthepassersofonedayoftheexamthattheyhavefiveyearstopasstheotherdaybeforetheresultexpires.OnbehalfofSEAOIIwishallthebesttoallwhoaretakingthetestthisApril.
TheSpringSEFlecturewilltakeplaceonApril18andwillfeatureGunnarHubbard, Principal and Sustainability Practice Leader at Thornton-Tomasetti.Hewill discuss “TheRole ofSustainability inStructuralEngineering,”atopicthatwillbeextremelyinterestingasitinvestigatestheglobalimpactofourconstructionmaterials,wheretheycomefrom,howtheyareprocessed.Gunnarwillprovideanoverviewofsustainablestrategiesforstructuralengineersandwillofferadeepoverviewofcasestudiesandbestpracticesinengineering.
AprilwillalsomarkthereturnoftheSEAOIGovernmentAffairsSpringLuncheon; the April 21 event follows the tradition of the former SEPAC PrincipalLuncheonandbringstoourmembersaviewfromthegov-ernmentside.This year’s speaker, IllinoisSecretaryofStateRandyBlankenhornwillsharewithushisvisiononthepresentandthefutureof infrastructure investmentandconstruction inourstate.AnotherinitiativeintheareaofGovernmentAffairsisSEAOIparticipationtotheAIALegislativeDayonMarch28.Wejoinforceswiththeourfriendarchitects'associationtogetintouchwithourlegislatorsandmakesurethatourvoiceisheardinSpringfield;thisisthesecondconsecutiveyearthatwearejoiningthisevent,andIam
sure the feedback fromtheparticipantswillbeaspositiveasitwaslastyear.
ThemonthofAprilwillendwiththe14theditionoftheSEAOIMidwestBridgeSymposium,whichtogetherwithseveralprojectandtechnicalpresentations,willfeatureDr.JohnE.BreenoftheUniversityofTexasAustinasthekeynotespeaker.Theeventwilltakeplaceatthetradi-tionalMaggiano’slocationonApril27.
Therearedefinitelymanyreasonsforourmemberstostayengagedandjoinourupcomingactivities.IalsowouldliketomentionhowtheseeventsarecomingrightafterasuccessfulChicagoTradeShowandcontinuingeducationeventsthattookplaceinMarch:SeismicDesignofBridgesandtheFoundationDesignPrimer,twoothersuccessfulone-dayevents.ThisisaclearsignofhowtheSEAOIBoard,GACandSEFtogetherwithSEAOIstaffareworkinghardtostrengthenourprogramsandgetmoreofourmembersinvolved.IwanttothankallthepeoplethatworkhardonorganizingtheseeventsandalltheinstructorsofourRefresherCourseandothercontinuingeducationevents.

yOung EngInEEr SpOtlIghtThismonth’sYoungEngineerwasbornandraisedinElPaso,Texas.Growingupinthepass,ouryoungengineerdevelopedanaffinityforengineeringwhileonatriptoSixFlagsGreatAmericawithhishighschoolband.Forthoseofyoumusicenthusiasts,ouryoungengineerplaysboththetrumpetanddrums;butnotatthesametime.Forcollege,hestayedlocalandattendedtheUniversityofTexas,ElPaso,whereheearnedhisbachelorofscienceincivilengineering.He traded thedesert for theplainsandattendedUniversity of Illinois,Urbana–Champaignforgraduateschoolwhereheearnedhismasterofscienceinstructuralengineeringin2015.Aftergraduation,hedecidedtomovetoChicagoandjointheteamofAmecFosterWheeler.AtAmecFosterWheeler,ourspotlightengineerworksinthenuclearfield.Hisworkisvariedbuthasfocusedontheretrofitandupgradeofexistingnuclearfacilitiesutilizingsteeloftenforitsflexibility.Hehasalsocompletedstructuralevaluationsandqualificationsofexistingstructuresincludinga45/10tonintakestructuregantrycraneforanuclearplantinaspecialwindzoneontheeastcoast.Thisinvolvedanalysisofacustomboxsectionforoperationandhurricaneloadingaswellasbolt-and-weldconnectiondesign.Additionally,ouryoungengineerhasworkedonsteelframinganalysisfornuclearcontainment!Hewasafuninterview,andI’msurehewillhavealotofgreathighlightsinhiscareer.Itiswiththisexperience,abitoftrepidation,andacoldbeverageourYoungEngineerSpotlight(YES)stepsintothehotseat.Withoutfurtherado,pleasejoinmeingivingawarmSEAOIwelcometoJonathan tavarez!(Crowd erupts in applause)

mm: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Jt: IseemyselfwithmyP.E.andS.E.

mm: Mentorship program? Can you tell me a little more about that?
Jt: I recently established a mentorship programatmyundergraduatealmamater(theUniversityofTexasat El Paso) that aims to provide an effective avenue to prepare socioeconomically under-represented, andfirst-generationcollegestudentsto compete effectively for the best graduateandprofessionalprogramsintheworld.UTEPAlumniarepairedwith students based on their interests andmentorthemthroughthegraduateschoolapplicationprocess.Sofarmy team has only made it available forcivilengineeringstudentswiththe help of the ASCE student chapter;
however it will soon be opened up totheentirecollegeofengineering.Long-termplansincludeexpandingthisprogramtoothercollegesintheuniversity, then to other universities alongtheborderandnationwide.
mm: That sounds like a great initiative. Are you involved in any other volunteer groups, within or outside of the engineering community?
Jt: IhavebeenengagedwiththeASCEYoungMembersGroupCANstructionteam for the last two summers anddefinitelyplantocontinueparticipating.IamalsoinvolvedwiththeStructuralEngineersAssociationYoungEngineersCommittee,andOutreachCommittee.IreallyenjoyparticipatinginSEAOIvolunteerevents such as the Future City Competition,andIplantoseekoutopportunitiestojoinotheroutreachorganizationstogivebacktothecommunity.Asidefromengineering,Ireallymissplayingmusicandwouldlovetogetinvolvedwithaband.
mm: What has been the most gratifying moment, thus far, of your young career?
Jt: Myfirstvisittoanuclearpowerplant,andseeingthefirstprojectIeverworkedonasafinishedproduct.
mm: What is one piece of advice you would like to share with other Young Engineers?
Jt: Iwouldencourageeveryonetopursueoutreach.Notmanypeoplerealizehowmuch of their own successes can be attributedtotheworkandsacrificeofothersbeforethem.Helpingthosethatcomeafteryouiskeytoensuringcontinuedgrowthandprogress.

Jt: MyfavoritethingaboutChicagowouldhavetobethearchitecture.Fewcitieshavebeaches,amajorriverandabustlingurbancenterthatareasbeautifulasChicago’s.I appreciate that so much focus is placedonthepublic’senjoymentoftheseenvironments.

Jt: I am a drummer and used to march on the drumline in highschoolandcollege.

mm: What is the best vacation you have ever taken?
Jt: The best vacations I have ever takenhaveallbeenthemanyroadtripswithmyfamily.Oneoftheones that stands out in my mind isonethroughCalifornia.Itwasamazingtoexperiencealltheattractions,landmarksandculturesofthestate.MyfamilyandIarevery close, but since I live so far awayfromthem,thosekindsofmemorieswhereweallenjoyedeachother’s company are some of my fondest.Wemakeitapointtogoonsomesortoftripeveryyear.

favorite TV show would have to be “Scrubs,”andtheentireStarWarsSagaandTheDarkKnighttrilogyaretiedformyfavoritemovie(s).

Jt: TonyStark,becauseIwouldwantto learn as much as I can about his technology,themethodbehindhisgenius(madness?)andhisadventureswiththeAvengers.Iwouldalsotry and persuade him to let me takearideintheIronMansuit.
mm: If given a choice to skip work for a day, how would you spend the entire day?
