Automobile and container handling are concentrated in Bre-merhaven, 60 kilometres further north. Heavy and ultra-heavy cargo that cannot be packed in a container is the most important goods category for the harbours in the city of Bremen. Neustäd-ter Hafen in particular, Germany’s southernmost seaport and one of the largest terminals in Europe for breakbulk and heavy lift, plays a central role now and in future. Throughput figures were up significantly last year, a clear sign that the Han-seatic city will remain an integral part of the ports of Bremen.

Roughly 70,000 jobs in the Federal Land of Bre-men are dependent on the port industry – which means that the interests of this business sector also play a key role in the political scene. The Port Promotion Agency - Bremische Hafenvertretung BHV e.V. – and the Association of Small and Medi-um-Sized Business Enterprises at the Ports in Bre-men City, or ISH, are two institutions which have proved to be highly effective representatives on behalf of their members.
The ISH now represents 50 small and medium-si-zed enterprises from the maritime business that act on a local, national or global scale. In line with their motto “ZUKUNFT HAFEN.DE“ (The future of our ports), the ISH members provide a platform for constructive dialogue in Bremen. Roughly every fifth job in the Federal Land of Bre-men is dependent on the ports of Bremen accor-ding to a recent survey, which identified 77,250 jobs in the Federal Land of Bremen as port-de-pendent. This means that the number of jobs re-lated to the ports has increased even further over the last few years. It also means that Bremen’s economy has a far greater maritime focus than in Hamburg, for instance, where every ninth job is dependent on the ports.
Martin Günthner, Bremen’s Senator for the Ports, regards these figures as proof of the outstanding importance of the port facilities in Bremen and Bremerhaven: “The ports are both the heart and the driving force of Bremen’s economy. For the Senate, it is therefore a clear obligation to con-tinue to do everything in its power to ensure that our ports remain competitive.”
This means continuing to invest in refurbishment of the infrastructure in Bremen and in Bremerha-ven. At the start of this year, a new railway station was inaugurated in Bremerhaven to optimise rail operations at the terminal. The new port tunnel which will provide a direct link between Bremer-haven Container Terminal and the motorway will be completed shortly. A one-kilometre long new quay is under construction at the cruise terminal in response to the steady growth in passenger shipping. And finally, the nautical conditions at Bremen’s Industriehafen have been improved by deepening and widening the harbour basin.
This safeguards the position of the maritime logis-tics centre of Bremen/Bremerhaven as one of the most important universal ports in Europe.

600 long trains arrive at the ports in Bremen and Bremerhaven every single week – ample proof of the outstanding role that this port group plays as Europe’s leading railway port. Nowhere else is rail’s share of the modal split as high as it is here.The terminal railway in the Federal Land of Bre-men has a track length of more than 200 kilome-tres. Every second container handled at the ports is transported on rail. When it comes to automo-bile transport, rail accounts for an even higher share: roughly 80 per cent of the 2.3 million cars that are handled in Bremerhaven every year ar-rive at or leave the port via rail. The systematic development of the rail facilities ensures that the ports of Bremen are ready to cope with the gro-wing number of freight trains and can offer ad-ditional capacities on the market.
