Standing strong in the history of Catholic education in the city of Darwin

is St John’s Catholic College.

For more than fifty years the College has served the Darwin community and beyond,

providing exceptional education and pastoral care for both day and boarding students,

spanning several generations.

IN OUR HISTORY

Today the College takes pride in the educational opportunities and

standard of pastoral care provided. We are culturally diverse,

pastorally-centred and futures-focused.

Our history is our tradition and our tradition is the foundation of our future.

Established as a boys’ school by the Bishop of

Darwin in 1960, the College was founded on the

edge of the Darwin Botanical Gardens and was led by Fr John

Burford MSC.

The first boarding students arrived in 1966 under

the leadership of Fr Cyril Connolly MSC.

Under the leadership of Fr John Phelan MSC from 1968 to 1973,

the College expanded with new

classrooms and manual arts and sporting facilities.

In 1972 Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College was founded on

the other side of St John’s College,

separated by the Botanical Gardens. Led by Sr

St Anne Daley FDNSC, the girls’ boarding residence

was established under the leadership of the

Dominican Sisters of the Holy Rosary.

Following the devastation caused by Cyclone

Tracey in 1974, Fr Tyson Doneley decided that

St John’s College should become co-educational

and in the following years, he oversaw the

construction of many new buildings including the

library, auditorium, staff rooms and classrooms,

along with subsequent Principals Fr Tony Bolt MSC

and Fr John Franzmann MSC.

The Jubilee Hall was constructed to commemorate the College’s

Silver Jubilee in 1985.

The College further developed to take in international boarding

students and Indigenous boarding was

expanded, under the leadership of Br Paul Brooks MSC.

Financial problems led the last MSC Principal,

Fr Robert Irvine MSC to negotiate with the Catholic Education

Office to take over the College from the MSC order.

Mr Gerard Keating, the first lay Principal of St John’s Catholic

College was responsible for master planning the College for its

future growth.

In 2003 Sr Phillipa Murphy FNDC was the last OLSH appointed

Principal at St John’s and was responsible

for introducing the Year 7 students into Middle School. She

established a clear vision for the College that pursued its motto

of being ‘Strong in Faith’, and expanded this vision to include

education and tradition.

STRONG TOGETHER

Our Catholic faith and the charism of our founders, the Missionaries of

the Sacred Heart (MSC) and the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred

Heart (OLSH) is the foundation of our College culture.

College patron, St John the Evangelist, guides the work of our College so

that, in Christ’s words, according to St John, “I came that they may have

life and have it abundantly.” John 10:10

Our College educational philosophy is to prepare our students for life.

In doing so, our curriculum, our pastoral care and our College culture

builds the academic, social, emotional and spiritual dimensions of each

young person, providing them with an holistic education and mindset

with which to encounter their future pathways.

DEVELOPING A LOVE OF LEARNING

Our Middle Years curriculum aims to inspire a love of learning.

The needs of young adolescents are recognised through our Middle School pro-

gram which allows each student to grow and learn within a strong community.

When the students feel a strong sense of

support and are comfortable in their environment, the learning

experience is enhanced.

Our teachers are involved in planning and writing of interesting and innovative

units, based on the Australian Curriculum and focussed on the needs of the

learners.

IN OUR PASTORAL CARE

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW ARE NEW STUDENTS TRANSITIONED INTO COLLEGE LIFE? When a new student commences at the College, the following

steps take place to ensure the student is welcomed and there is a

smooth transition:

• For day students, the Pastoral Care Coordinator assigns

a peer/buddy from that student’s Home Room to assist

them in settling in to the daily routine

• An orientation tour is conducted by the peer/buddy

• For boarders, a transition/orientation program is run by

Pastoral Care Coordinators and Boarding staff to ensure

new boarders are comfortable and aware of expectations.

WHAT LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES DO STUDENTS HAVE? All students are encouraged to demonstrate their

personal leadership qualities.

One of the many benefits of a small school environment is the leader-

ship opportunities that are afforded to senior students.

At St John’s College, all students are encouraged to

demonstrate their personal leadership qualities and to be involved in

membership of committees:

• Students can nominate to be College Captains, House

Leaders of Committee Presidents in Year 12.

• A selection process including interviews with senior staff

and an election by peers determines who is appointed to

these positions.

• Student Representative Council membership is open to all.

• Three Standing Committees include Catholic Practice,

Environment and Technology. These committees are led

by a staff member and provide service to the College for

liturgies, programs and various projects.

WHAT IS THE COLLEGE BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT POLICY? Our College Behaviour

Management Policy can be found on our website at

stjohnsnt.catholic.edu.au WHAT IS THE UNIFORM POLICY? It is an expectation

at St John’s Catholic College that the full and correct uniform is worn

at all times. This is an explicit condition of enrolment. The uniform has

been designed for maximum comfort to suit the tropical climate of

Darwin. Both an

academic and sports uniform is required.

Pastoral care is at the heart of the educational experience offered at St

John’s Catholic College. In creating a culture where everyone is valued

and everyone belongs, the

pastoral care program is based on compassion, faith,

education and tradition.

The College provides a safe, caring and nurturing

environment for both students and staff, with a culture that promotes

health, well-being and acceptance of all.

Our College Behaviour Management Policy is based on the premise that

with all rights, come responsibilities, and that all individuals choose their

behaviour.

“It’s the feeling of belonging that is so important to our students amd to our staff, it impacts learning and well-being and gives our young people a foundation of support.”

STRONG TOGETHER

Our boarders become part of our St John’s family, a home away from

home where life-long friendships are formed

and a strong alumni grows.

Our boarding college is a welcoming, supportive and caring communi-

ty where the well-being of our students is paramount. Inherent in the

fabric of our boarding college are strong Christian values and this is

expressed in the care provided for both our day and boarding students.

We operate from the premise that the family is paramount. Conse-

quently, we are very conscious that we are

entrusted, not only with educational expectations, but the care and

welfare of the whole person. This translates into

a care which both challenges and supports your child so that they

come to realise their personal worth and dignity, and as well as that of

others.

Beyond the classroom, our boarders are encouraged to be active,

involved, and to make the most of the opportunities offered to them.

Emphasis is placed on activities, tasks and experience.

We are strong boarding community, a place of belonging.

IN OUR BOARDING COMMUNITY

“I’ve made life-long friends here, it’s been my second home and my second family.”
