STRING QUARTET NO 2

“HEAD ON VORTEX”

for 2 violins, viola and cello

Page 2: String quartet no2

: The bow of the violin gradually increases its pressure on string so as to produce a sort of scratchy

sound effect, and then gradually release the pressure back to normal.

: Vibrato should be played as apparent as possible, reflecting the fluctuation of pitches apparently. Sul pont: Playing near the bridge

Tremolo and glissando should be played at the same time.

Pizzcato bending the pitches downward (semitonally) or upward (semitonally)

Page 3: String quartet no2

Programme Notes: The music is inspired by the modern Chinese Arts “Head on Vortex”. The music begins with several pitch centers while gradually blending with dissonant sound effects expressively. Soon, the music builds up to a climax where saturation of chromatic materials emerge. After that, a contrasting section occur which provides some mysterious sound effects to some extent. The central section is characterized by micropolyphonic materials and tend to be rather indeterministic rhythmically. Following that is another contrasting section which recapitulate the materials of the previous contrasting section. Upon reaching another climax, the music brings back the preliminary materials while fading out quietly.

From mm.96-107, a bit asychronously, however, it would be

necessary that Vln and Vla part start playing glissando together, so as the Vln and Vlc part, and thus the dotted bar-line serve as some sort of orientation in this regard.

In m. 102, all parts need to start together for preparing the ongoing passage.
