Introduction ●The recent rapid economic growth in the BRICs has been demanding more energy supply, worldwide. ●Total primary energy demand in 2035 will become 1.5 times that of 2009. ●Mass transportation between countries has become more important for maintaining world's economic activities. ●Higher production of oil and gas and safer and more secure mass transportation are one of the major issues in engineering. ● A variety of structures, like energy transport pipelines, ships and offshore structures, have been developed, constructed and operated. ● Safe and secure operations of these structures are definitely important both for human lives and environmental protection.

Strength and Reliability of Pipelines for Energy Transportation

●Total primary energy supply by natural gas in the world in 2035 will become 1.6 times that of 2009. ● Most of natural gas is transported by pipelines. ● Higher operation pressure, longer distance of the pipelines for increasing demand for natural gas supply. ● Hydrogen gas pipelines for the future "hydrogen society. ● CO2 pipelines for Carbon Capture and Storage. ● Safer operation for these pipelines.

World’s first full-scale hydrogen gas pipeline burst test to examine the strength of the pipe

with SINTEF, Norway.

High-speed camera image of crack propagation and gas release

No long crack propagation was verified.

Computer simulation model to examine the effect of pressure, pipe diameter, pipe toughness, etc.
