MenswearTrade Shows/Conventions in New York

Menswear companies around the globe come together in one city, i.e. New York, and a number of trade shows and conven-tions take place here during the winter season. It is an indication that male youths are becoming increasingly fashionable, and that is great news for the industry. Self-display and self-adornment are no longer a female affair; it has become a male affair as well.

MRket is a trade show for menswear brands, including clothing, sportswear, footwear andaccessories, and over 47 countries took partfor their January 2015 show.

PROJECT New York is a trade show that isaffiliated with MAGIC, and it showcasescontemporary menswear as well as denimcollections for men and women.

AGENDA showcases streetwear and urban fashion brands that are inspired by art, music and sports.

Sneaker Con is a premier sneaker event where collectors trade their sneakers. For the December 2014 event, there were over ten thousand participants buying and selling their sneakers.

Upcoming Book:“Sneakers: Fashion, Gender and Subculture”

This is the first academic study of sneakers and the subculture that surrounds them. Since the 1980s, members of American sneaker subcultures, popularly known as “sneakerheads” or “sneakerholics”, have created adistinctive identity for them-selves, while sneaker manufac-turers such as Reebok, Puma andNike have become global fashion brands. How have sneakers come to gain this status and what makes them attractive? In what ways are sneaker subcultures bound up with gender identity and why are sneakerholics mostly men?

Based on the author’s own ethnographic fieldwork in New York, where sneaker subcul-ture is said to have originated, this unique study traces the transformation of sneakers from sportswear to fashion symbol.Sneakers explores the ob-sessions and idiosyncrasies surrounding the sneaker phe-nomenon, from competitive subcultures to sneaker painting and artwork. It is a valuablecontribution to the growing study of footwear in fashion studies and will appeal to stu-dents of fashion theory, gender studies, sociology and popular culture.
