In choosing to write this piece, detailingthe struggles of the single woman withchildren, black or otherwise, I can onlyspeak the truth as the truth they say shallset you free. I must admit that divorce hascaused such a strain on my wallet, thatthoughts of becoming a stripper, robbing abank, or finding a sugar daddy often crossmy mind.

Most men, however, I believe wouldnot be interested in seeing an almost greyhaired, 40 year old woman (including myprivate areas), dancing nude on stage. Yes,like many other 40 something year olds, Ihave also experienced that Samantha Jonesmoment, (the character from Sex and theCity), where she glances down, while nudein her bathroom, and finds a grey hair pro-truding from her private area.

Like her, I screamed and thought tomyself, “Sandy Daley, your life is nowover and no man will ever wish to see younaked again!” So there went my “becom-ing a stripper” thoughts.

Also, the thought of being someone’sbitch while in jail is so horrifying, (I amsuch a chicken), that I know that I couldnever rob a bank.

And finding a sugar daddy is alsounlikely these days, as the recession is stillaffecting everyone, and men are finding itdifficult to even buy you a drink at the bar, much less pay your rent like they used toyears gone by.

So I, like most of the other womenwho are single, (according to the stats, 59percent of adults in poverty are women, and three quarters of us are on our own),continue on a daily regiment of trying tomake ends meet, while hoping and prayingthat nothing major happens to rock theboat.

The minute that I decided to ventureout on my own, my life changed drastical-ly. Every financial decision that I made, Ihad to second guess each thought as it

popped up in my head. Did I really needthat new car, or will that trusty, 7 year oldHonda suffice for now? I chose the Honda,as it was reliable and would get me fromplace to place safely with the children.

Also, gone were the days when I couldspend whatever I wanted to on myself. Thedesigners Gucci and Prada, are certainlynot in my vocabulary anymore, and some-times even the knock-offs are too pricey forme, even if they have just happened to “fallout of the back of a truck.”

Not to mention manicures and pedi-cures, as they are only done on a “musthave to” basis. The girls at the spa (usuallyvery beautiful Chinese ladies), often ask“Why don’t you come more oftenSandee?” (this is how they usually pro-nounce my name. “It is either pedicures orbus passes for my children for the month”,I would rationalize to myself.

And, will you ever marry again? Onlyif you are lucky is my answer, as it is a dif-ferent reality for women compared to menwho experience a break-up when childrenare involved. While your ex can move onquite easily with the hot, young, yogainstructor, with perky breasts, and theexpensive Brazilian weave, (yes my

friends, this was my reality), women oftenfind it difficult to find a suitable mate aftera divorce.

Worse, if you are a single blackfemale, as finding a good black man whois, not living on the down low, not in jail, educated, with no baby mama dramas, andstill interested in being with black women,is seemingly very , very difficult. Pictureyourself trying to find a needle in ahaystack.

Dating, of course, is not an easy task!Financial woes or not, divorce has taughtme to be more giving, patient and ultimate-ly only depend upon myself for everything.A very hard pill to swallow, but swallow itI must, as I have no choice.

We are in an economic climate where asignificant number of businesses are

finding it very difficult to generate enoughincome to take care of the expenses and real-ize a profit.

At the same time, New York State isjoining the growing list of states across thecountry that are pursuing an aggressive taxcollections drive. Several states have a vari-ety of strategies for following up when auditsfind taxpayers lodging behind with their pay-ments.

For example, one tactic in California ispublic shaming where the state publishes listsof individuals and businesses behind onincome or sales taxes.

However, New York is taking a moreempathetic approach in responding to therecession by stepping up its program to for-give parts of back payments due from tax-payers in economic distress, while forcefully

issuing what is called “Tax Warrants” and“State Tax Lien Notices” to hundreds of busi-ness owners.

But the Tax Warrants and Tax LienNotices are becoming terrifying for mostbusinesses especially the small-scale andminority owned. As in the cases of NakisakiRestaurant and Brammers Subway atNostrand Inc, while they are disputing theamount of sale taxes, the Tax Departmentwas forcefully selling their assets to recoveroutstanding taxes.

This is a very difficult time for thesebusinesses as there is little protection fromtax collectors. Scores of restaurants, hairsalons, day care centers and auto repairsshops are closing or are being placed on theauction block as they are unable to pay theirtaxes.

Something is definitely not right whenso many small businesses are being closed as

a result of non-payment of their sales taxes. We are not talking about tax dodgers andpeople who deliberately refuse to pay theirtaxes.

Tax collectors and the State have a vest-ed interest in seeing businesses prosperousbecause they'll collect more taxes and thebusinesses will be hiring more people whowill in turn pay taxes also. In the long run, they don't gain when any business shutsdown.

The New York State should thereforeconsider staging business management train-ing intervention programs including tax edu-cation to assist minority business owners aspart of an overall strategy to enhance taxcompliance.

We cannot achieve sustainable econom-ic growth in New York without a vibrantsmall-scale business sector.

In an effort to ensure children receive thechild support they are owed, the NewYork State Department of Taxation andFinance (DTF) recently announced that it isenhancing its child support enforcementfunction.

The Department has added four agents- two in New York City and two inSyracuse. The new agents are part of a 40-person team that partners with the State'sOffice of Temporary and DisabilityAssistance (OTDA) to collect overduechild support from delinquent noncustodialparents through New York State's childsupport enforcement program.

By law, if a parent owes four monthsor more of child support and is not payingby income withholding, OTDA will referthe case to the Tax Department.

The Department uses collection toolsto enforce the child support case. TheDepartment issues warrants and is then ableto seize financial assets and personal prop-erty, such as vehicles, that can be auc-

tioned. Last year, the Tax Department issued

115,542 tax warrants for delinquent childsupport.

Recent notable seizures and resultsinclude:●2007 Mercedes Benz, auctioned - $40,500collected●Two businesses, a music and photo store, released to respondent - helping resolve$13,400 in arrears● 1993 Chevrolet Suburban, released torespondent - helping to secure nearly$81,000● 2011 Lexus hybrid, auctioned - $22,000collected

In 2011, $49 million in child support wascollected in cases that were included in theOTDA/DTF process.

OTDA also refers delinquent childsupport cases to the Tax Department on anannual basis for the tax refund offsetprocess. Delinquent noncustodial parents

who are eligible for a state tax refund willhave their refund offset to pay past due sup-port.

"There are children and parentsthroughout the State who need help - andneed it now," explained Commissioner ofTaxation and Finance Thomas H. Mattox."That's why we've added resources for thisvital mission. In addition, we use cuttingedge technologies to enhance our ability tolocate parents, along with their income andassets. We are proud to be part of this teameffort to help children and their families."OTDA Executive Deputy CommissionerElizabeth Berlin said, "We value our part-nership with the Department of Taxationand Finance and applaud their efforts.

As a result of New York's commitmentto the child support enforcement program, including relationships between state agen-cies and the contributions of child supportworkers in counties across the State, collec-tions last year exceeded $1.8 billion.

Families depend on these funds to helpsupport their children.

Robert Mugabe's latest rant:'Jamaicans Men aredrunkards and pot

Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabehas infuriated Jamaican men by

labelling them chronic drunkards andunambitious pot smokers.

He claimed they had 'no interest inhigher education' and are 'always drunk',during his controversial speech last week atthe University of Zimbabwe in Harare.

'The men want to sing and do not go tocolleges, some are dreadlocked, let us notgo there,' said Mugabe in several unscript-ed asides.

He alternated between English and theShona language during the three-hour talk, but his comments were corroborated byreporters afterwards.

His comments are now making wavesacross the Caribbean island, whereJamaicans are debating the matter on streetcorners, in letters to newspapers and onradio talk shows.

Over the years, Mugabe has repeated-ly made disparaging remarks aboutRastafarians, whom he once described ashaving 'moths and mud' in their hair.

There's more to selecting a lawyerthan picking a name in the phone

book or "Googling" for one in yourarea. This is a major decision and youwant to spend some time making sureyou select the right lawyer for yourneeds.

Your Aunt Anne may have used alawyer once and told you he wasexcellent, but maybe Aunt Anne haddifferent needs from you and notevery case is the same.

A personal recommendation is anexcellent place to start, but it's only aplace to start.

When selecting a lawyer, you'll want to:

Learn about your legal problem.Search the Internet for FAQs, start byreading articles or discussing it withothers who may have been in a similarsituation

Call your local attorney referralservice, typically provided by yourstate or city bar association

Use Lawyers.com. Find a Lawyer.Search for lawyers in your city andstate in the type of problem you have

Peer Review and Client ReviewRatings to find out more about yourpotential lawyers. These resourcesprovide unbiased ratings from otherlawyers, and other people who haveused their services.

Consult your family lawyer, or anattorney who you know throughsports or church, or an accountant, realtor or other professional. Manyattorneys tend to specialize, and thegood ones usually have an establishedreputation in the community.

Narrow ListOnce you've narrowed the list

down to several names, use the fol-lowing checklist to screen them:

Look at biographical informa-tion, including whatever you can find

on lawyer and law firm Web sites. Dothey appear to have expertise in thearea of law you need? What kind of clients does the attor-

ney represent? Check the lawyer'sprofile and client list. If you can't tell, call the lawyer's office and find out

Click on the law firm Web site tofind out more about individuallawyers and firmsUse search engines to find articles,

white papers or other informationalpieces the lawyer has written? Doesthe attorney participate in any onlinechats or blog? A discussion board?

Ask people in your area if they'veheard of the attorneys and what theythink about them

Check out the online archives ofyour local newspaper. Has there beenany publicity about the lawyer or thecases that he or she has handled?

Do you have any special needs toconsider such as requiring an attorneywho speaks a language other thanEnglish?

At this point, you'll have a "shortlist" of two or three names. Contactthe attorney's firm and schedule a con-sultation. Some firms will charge aconsultation fee to meet with you, soexpect to pay anywhere from $75 to$250 for an initial consultation. Manyfirms do offer free first meetings.

Finally, use your common senseand gut instincts in deciding who tohire. Your relationship can last severalyears and require a good workingrelationship and trust. You want tochoose the best lawyer to do the bestjob for you.

Don't be surprised if the attorneycannot meet with you on short notice. On the other hand, a wait of more thana week is a sign that the attorney maybe too busy to give a new case such asyours the time and attention itrequires.

Share0DisqusHow To Pick The Right LawyerSeptember 05 2012| Filed Under » Laws and RegulationWhether you are drafting a will or a trust, buying or sellingreal estate or getting a divorce, it is important to selectthe best attorney possible. Read on to find out what tipsyou can use to make sure that you are picking the rightlawyer for you.

Retain an Honest LawyerMany attorneys offer an initial consultation free of charge.Take advantage of this. Use the meeting to determinewhether the attorney is honest and forthcoming.Instinctively, some people have the ability to determine anindividual's character within a few minutes of interactingwith the person; however, there are a few personalitytraits that can also tip you off.

For example, is the lawyer looking you in the eye whenspeaking with you, or is he or she looking at the ground?Remember, people who don't maintain eye contact usual-ly have a problem with the truth. Also, ask what kind ofcases he or she has litigated in the past. If the majority ofthe attorney's work has been defending the dregs of soci-ety, the attorney (while perhaps a great litigator) may beused to bending the rules to get things done.

Also, ask the attorney about your case's chance of suc-cess or failure. If the lawyer sounds unusually optimisticand doesn't tell you any of the risks or downplays thecosts associated with the case, he or she is probably notbeing honest. Remember, there are downsides and risksto almost every case!

YOUTH IN FOCUS

Making A Fresh Start For The New School Year

ASKDR KAREN GORDON

[email protected]

1-888-255-5064.

Dr. Karen Gordon is a licensed psychologist with 13 years experience, specializing in dis-ruptive behaviors in children and adolescents. If you have a question or concern, please for-ward by emailing her at: [email protected]

Ihave worked with many parentswho have been through a tough anddifficult school period with their

children’s teachers. The teacher wasnot as receptive to the child’s needs orsupposedly disliked the child for noparticular reason.

The parents claimed their childwas picked on by the teacher or sin-gled out for misbehaviors that wereoften unnoticed when expressed byother students in the class.

This experience is often a sourceof pain for parents…they experiencethe child’s hurt as if it were their ownand feel a sense of betrayal and injus-tice by the teacher.

After all, teachers are supposed tobe fair, loving, and sensitive, aren’tthey? Well, teachers are human andlife isn’t always fair. I will never knowall the circumstances that led to theseconflicts between teacher, parent, andchild, but I do believe that parentsmust make a concerted effort not tocreate the same situation with a newteacher.

I know it might be challenging tochange old feelings and beliefs about

teachers, but you have to try for yourchild’s sake. Not every teacher isgoing to respond to your child the waythe previous teacher did.

Furthermore, once you becomeopen to more positive experiences, your child will follow suit and willbecome more optimistic as well.

Here are some ways to make thischange:

1. Pay attention to your negativethoughts about this new school experi-ence. For example, just because theteacher reprimands your child does notmean that the teacher hates him.

2. Are you interpreting the situa-tion accurately? Or are negative emo-tions clouding your assessment? Forexample, do you think that the teacherhates your daughter just because shedoes not smile at your child? Therecould be other reasons, such as; theteacher may have been distracted atthat moment.

3. Try not to let negative pastexperiences dominate your perceptionof all teachers. This will lead to dis-torted perceptions without evidence.

As always, Panorama was one of themost popular events of the West

Indian American Carnival and Parade, with more than a thousand lovers of thesweet, sweet sound of steel pan flocking tothe Brooklyn Museum grounds lastSaturday night to hear ten steel orchestrasgive it their all in the 2012 competition"Excellence in Steel."

Thousands more throughout the tri-state area tuned in to listen to it live overthe radio, while additional millionsthroughout the Caribbean and elsewherewere able to view it live over the internet.

Along with the top-notch steel panperformances, there were tributes to sever-

al recently departed enthusiasts in thefield. The first was cultural icon,Courtney Charles (Charleau), a ferventconnoisseur of all things Trinidadian, especially when it came to steel bands andcalypso. His encyclopedic memory andability to dispense information about thesetopics earned him the title of CulturalAmbassador among his friends.

Also honored were avid steel panplayers Dominique Clarke, who passed onat age 35, and Leticia Dean, who was only17. Both will be missed by their friendsand fellow musicians.

In the competition, each steel orches-tra consisted of anywhere from about 60 toa maximum of 100 players.

Think you do enough to secure yourpasswords, browsing, and network-ing? Prove it. Not all computer secu-

rity is about tin foil hats and anonymousbrowsing. Everyone who uses a computerhas a horse in the security race.

For the purpose of this post, we'rebreaking down online security into fouressential parts: passwords, browsers, at-home Wi-Fi and networking, and browsingon public Wi-Fi. Within those categorieswe'll give you a checklist of everything youshould do, from the bare minimum to the tin-foil-hat best.

Think you've done your due diligencewith your security? Jump to any of the foursections below to see how you stack up (andboost your security where you may be lack-ing):

Password security checklistBrowser security checklistHome network security checklistPublic Wi-Fi security checklist

Password security checklistPassword security has been popping up a lotin the news recently, but how much youshould care is entirely dependent on whatyou do online.

The bare minimum of password securi-ty via Lifehacker

Just because you don't use a lot ofonline services doesn't mean you can neglectbasic password security. Sure, you don'tneed to take any complicated measures, buteveryone should at least do a couple things.

Pick strong passwords: Regardless ofwhat your password is for, it's always goodto pick a strong, random password. Don't useyour child's name, or a birthday.

Use unique passwords for every site:Don't ever reuse the same email and pass-word combo on multiple services. It mightseem like it doesn't matter, but if a hackergets your account information on one site, that means they can use that login informa-tion on every other site you're registered at.Keep all your passwords different.

Use Should I Change My Password? totrack security breaches: If you don't keep upwith tech news you probably don't see mostminor security breaches. To help out, thewebapp Should I Change My Password?notifies you when a major service is hacked.

That's the minimum you should do ifyou want to play it safe and secure with yourpasswords. But you can do better than that.Let's step up your game.

Level up: You're a password proIf you're the type to conduct a lot of workonline, then you need more complicatedsecurity measures. With that in mind, youshould do the steps mentioned above, and afew other things.

Use two-factor authentication whenev-er possible: Two-factor authentication is asimple way to lock your computer to anaccount so you have to verify your identitywhen you log onto a different computer. Notall services have it, but Google, LastPass,Facebook, Dropbox, and more all do. Use it.

Use a password manager: We get it, youhave a lot of passwords and you don't wantto remember them all. Instead of reusing thesame junky password, a password manageris a simple way to save them all securely. Welike LastPass, butKeePass, and 1Passwordare equally solid solutions.

Shut down and unlink services you don'tuse: If you're the type to try out a lot of dif-ferent webapps or mobile apps then youprobably have a ton of passwords scatteredaround everywhere. When you decide youdon't want to use a service anymore, remem-ber to delete your account.

This way, if the service is hacked youdon't have to fumble around trying toremember your login information. For addedprotection, make sure you clean up your apppermissions on Facebook andTwitter.

HOW SECURE ARE YOU ONLINE?The checklist

Street Hype’s Love Connections

Building relationships is essential forhaving a fulfilling life, but – as we all

know – it’s not without its problems. Even close friendships could have

problems every now and then. That’s whyit’s important to learn about relationshipproblems and how to overcome them.

While there are many relationshipproblems that could happen, we can scaleit down to just two. These are the basicproblems that cause other problems in rela-tionships.

1. Misunderstanding Misunderstanding is perhaps the mostcommon problem in relationships.Sometimes your friends misinterpret whatyou do or say. Or it’s you who misinterpretthem. Depending on the maturity of thepeople involved, such misunderstandingcould be solved quickly or it could openthe way to more serious problems.

Misunderstanding is caused either bylack of quality or quantity in communica-tion. You could spend a lot of time to com-municate with your friends (for example, with your roommate), but if the quality ofthe communication is low then there is agood chance that misunderstanding willhappen.

The problem could also happenbecause you and your friend don’t commu-nicate often enough. If both parties arebusy, they may not have the chance tocommunicate what they need or wantwhich may eventually lead to misunder-standing.

2. Selfishness Another common problem in relationshipsis selfishness. Perhaps both parties under-stand what the other party needs, but one orboth of them are not willing to give it.They prefer to just keep it for themselves.

In this case, the problem is lack of actioninstead of lack of understanding. It takestime to build relationships but we may betoo busy to provide time for others. Whilewe can’t generalize the case, being busycould be a form of selfishness. Just want-ing to be understood without trying to

understand is also a form of selfishness. These two basic problems cause many

other relationship problems. Being judg-mental, for instance, is often caused byselfishness.

We want others to meet our expecta-tions and we blame them when they don’t.Anger could be caused my misunderstand-ing. You may think that your friend doessomething bad to you while she actuallydoesn’t intent to. Perhaps she does yougood but you misinterpret it.Misunderstanding causes us to misinter-pret positive as negative.

These two relationship problems mayseem simple, but solving them requiresserious effort. It may take years or evenlifetime to learn how to solve them. Butbeing aware of them is a good first stepbecause we can’t win a war if we don’teven know the enemy.

Dear Divine Diva:

Your response to "Not Ungrateful inBrooklyn (December 20) missed the

mark. Her boyfriend of eleven months isflying first class to Jamaica, but he's onlypaying for a coach ticket for her? I was adivorce lawyer for 31 years (now retired),so I know a few things about relationships.

While Enton had no obligation to payher way to Jamaica, once he invited her, hedisplayed a troubling character flaw. If hewas going to pay her way, he should havepaid for her to sit with him in first class.

Her seat in coach is a warning sign:She'll always be in the back of the plane, the bus or his life.

Of course buying a first class seat forthe two of them is expensive, but if he'sgoing to take her to his family's chateau, heshould treat her as an equal -- or not do itat all. –Representing Brooklyn.

Dear Representing Brooklyn:

Iappreciate your viewpoint, one which isshared by many other readers. The

responses to that letter were an interestingmix.

My newspaper readers comment:

Dear Divine Diva:

Not Ungrateful" is unbelievable! Myhusband cannot sit in coach unless he

is at an exit row, and those seats aren'talways easy to get. Because I'm short, Idon't need the extra space and, if I amassigned an exit seat, I gladly give it up toa tall person. That woman will be inJamaica (paid for!) by her boyfriend. I

would go in the baggage compartment forsuch an opportunity.

-Happy To Trade Places

Dear Happy To Trade Places:

Aless-expensive option for long-leggedfliers is to buy an extra coach seat ,

HOWEVER I’m only flying the same classas my man if we are traveling together.
