Shifting out of summer vacation mode can mean earlier bed times, healthy breakfast routines, and organizing time for homework, extra math fact practice, and reading, but our students seem to be right on track, and that means that you have everything under control at home – or at least it looks that way!!! Have you set some attendance goals with your child for this school year? Time and time again, research tells us that being on time and in attendance daily is a top predictor of school success. We know that it is also the natural way to practice this life lesson, even if the work world feels far away from a first or second grader! The groundwork is laid now. Another hot topic for conversation at home will hopefully include bus behavior expectations. I encourage our children to “ride on the bus, just like in the car”. This means seated, hands to one’s self, and voice under control. October is National Bus Safety month, but everyday is an important day to communicate that parents expect their children to follow the bus safety rules, even when they are not with them on the bus. Our bus drivers work hard to deliver your most precious possessions home safely each day, but need our support with these expectations. Finally, the first report period will come to a close on October 23 rd . This year we are piloting a newly designed report card, which will be coming home on November 6 th . Our goals in updating our report cards are: 1. To provide parents with a solid understanding of their child’s performance and progress in relation to the curriculum that has been taught. 2. To provide information on areas which need to be strengthened. 3. To spark conversation between the parent and their child on performance, including work habits and academic strengths and needs. You will notice that this report will contain performance indicators aligned to the standards. You will see language on the report card for the following areas: Behavior Qualifiers – these are the behavioral goals by which the students are being measured; including both academic and social behaviors that support learning.

President’s  Corner    Six weeks of school down, just thirty-five more to go! In the Streams PTO world, these six weeks have flown by. I credit that to a smooth start to the year thanks to an amazing team of people. Thank you to Melissa Waldron for handling all membership and directory issues, April Jackson for putting together this newsletter, Kathy Ginsburg for jumping into the Arts in USC program, Christina Furlong for hauling all of the KidStuff books to the classrooms, Mandy Marn for organizing the homeroom parents, Leria Miles as VP who has handled everything I have thrown at her so far, Mrs Kaplan who has done it all, and to Dr Miller for being a great principal that truly cares about our children. A very special thank you goes to Ann Rhodes who has proofread, advised and answered midnight texts to guide me the past few weeks. Looking ahead, there are some exciting PTO things coming up that you won’t want to miss!

1. Stravaganza. October 9. It is great fun for the entire family! 2. PTO meeting on Tuesday October 13. Did you hear about the last

one? We had fabulous food, prizes and news! Please mark your calendars! Kids always welcome!

3. Harvest Parties on Friday October 30. The parade begins at 1:30 pm and the parties are immediately following.

Please remember, there are big jobs, small jobs and everything in between so if you are interested in being active in the PTO, it is never too late to jump in. Please just send me an email ([email protected]) or phone call (412-418-9156) and I’ll be happy to help you find a good fit within the Streams PTO family. Alissa Mammana
