The ground is ready to be broken on the new Strathmore Fire Fighters Associations Memorial Park after Town Council gave their blessing April 7.
A plan has been de-veloping over the past couple of years, which requires getting commu-nity sponsors on board and fundraising in place.
“It’s humbling,” said Muri Furzer, fire chief. “Due to the financial situ-ations in some business-es, [it’s good to see] that everyone is still able to come together and con-tribute to a project that has a lot of significance.”
Furzer said the memo-rial is being built for a couple of reasons: one, to coincide with the 100th year anniversary of the Strathmore Fire Department; and second-ly, a lot of communities are building memorials as the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 World Trade Centre attackes is occur-ring in 2011.
The park will be built on the northwest side of
the fire hall in the vacant lot and will not interfere with the trees that al-ready exist there, or the baseball diamonds.
The project has been entirely funded by com-munity sponsors, includ-ing ACTO Gas, Eagle Lake Nurseries and Heri-tage Concrete.
The entire park is 40 square feet in size and features a 30 ft concrete circle with the Strath-more Fire Department logo in the middle and a statue of a fire fighter.
The statue will feature a flame that will be lit for special occasions. The Association had looked to have a flame constant-ly buring, but said the cost was too much and it would be too harmful for the environment.
There will be a circle of benches and greenery around the outside so that people can come sit and have lunch.
The association said they wanted it to appeal to people so they would stop and enjoy the park.
It will also feature am-bient lighting so people can enjoy it at night.

It was a busy meeting for Town Coun-cil April 7 and a lot of decisions and is-sues were discussed:
Here are some of the highlights of the meeting.
• A request was made by a resident to have paper copies of the council agen-das and pervious minutes available at council meetings. In March, the Town of Strathmore stopped printing agen-das out in an attempt to be more en-vironmentally friendly. The request for minutes and agenda was made so that all residents have access to what is hap-pening in the town, especially for those who don’t have access to a computer or those who are computer illiterate. Coun-cilor Brad Walls suggested that approxi-mately six copies of the agenda and meetings are available at each meeting. In turn, Dwight Stanford, CAO said he would like a web cam to be set up in council chambers so people can watch the meetings from their home comput-ers. “It would be terrific for the public,” said Stanford.
• Council approved a $7.4 million borrowing bylaw to finance construc-tion of the East Calgary Waterline, the Brentwood Reservoir Booster Upgrade, the relocation of the Outfall Line to the Bow, design of the Wildflower Reservoir and the upgrade of the Storm Sewer on Thomas Drive. The money can be bor-rowed from the Alberta Capital Finance Authority, Canada Mortgage and Hous-ing Corporation, Canadian Chartered Bank and the Financial Institution. The town has 20 years to repay the money. The total amount for the construction project is $58.8 million with $51.1 mil-lion coming from grants and $316,000 coming from reserves.
• The town will be holding a public
auction of nine parcels of land June 10 at 10 a.m. at the town office. The parcels of land are being sold because they have outstanding tax arrears since 2007. Stan-ford said property owners have been ad-vised numerous times to pay since then. The auction is being held in accordance with the Municipal Government Act. The reserve bid amounts will be determined at a later date, prior to the auction. A list of properties that are eligible is avail-able in the April 7 meeting on the town’s website, along with further regulations and guidelines.
• Council approved two development permits for housing at 7 Bayside Place, “Sagecourt”, and 8 Bayside Place, “Bay-view Estates”. Sagecourt, which will be built by Dr. Patel who is also building the Age Care facility in town, will have 56 units of Medium Density Attached Housing Units in four buildings with sufficient parking. The housing will be rental units. Council members were concerned there is no sidewalk on the north side of the street and wanted reassurance there would be conversa-
tions with the developers to contribute to sidewalks. Bayview Estates will be 48 affordable medium housing units. The Town of Strathmore has received block funding through the province for a three-year period to provide af-fordable housing in the town and this project will address that issue. The town will be working with Classic Communi-ties in this project, and the cost of the project will be shared with the develop-ment of Sagecourt which will make it an affordable project. The project gives individuals and families who otherwise couldn’t purchase a home an opportuni-ty to invest and own their own. “This is great,” said Councilor Bob Sobol. “It’s a big step.” It was stated by Linda Nelson, Deputy CAO, that they hope the project starts this spring.
• Funding was received in the amount of $579,000 from the Major Community Facilities Program to help with the ex-pansion of the Aquatic Centre.
• Volunteers are needed for the Can-ada Day Celebrations. Contact the town office for more information.

The Civic Centre was full of peo-ple and auction items April 10 as the Strathmore Lions Club held their 24th annual action.
The group sells approximately 500 to 550 tickets for the event, but esti-mated that approximately 400 people were there the night of.
“It’s our biggest fundraiser,” said Wendy Gerbrandt from the Strath-more Lions.
“All the money that we raise goes to the Lions for projects within the community,”
Projects the Lions work on include donating back into other non-profit groups in the community, and the water park.
There were approximately 200 si-lent and live auction items up for grabs, including some big-ticket items like 10 tickets in a box at the Pengrowth Saddledome for the Tom
Petty and Joe Cocker show, and an executive flight for four to Kelowna or Vancouver.
Other items included art, tools, gift certificates for various stores and services, barbeque items and much more.
“All of these items are donated from businesses within the community and area,” said Gerbrandt.
Mason Cockx and his team were there as auctioneers to help sell the items.
A number of door prizes were also raffled off, as well as the chance to be the first table to eat.
Tickets for the Winner’s Choice Raffle were also sold, and the winner was allowed to pick any item from the live auction list prior to the start of the live auction.
In 2009, the group raised approxi-mately $50,000 and it was announced they hoped to close at $60,000 this year.

The Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA) Student Showcase Dance into Spring is a 90-minute extravaganza of dance, song and drama produced entirely by RSA students.
Third year RSA Mentorship Acting Stu-dent, Cassia Sch-ramm comments, ”It’s a great op-portunity for RSA students to per-form in front of a live audience as we don’t get that many opportuni-ties during our busy school year. It’s a privilege for the students to collaborate and present the work that we love and have worked so hard to perfect.”
RSA’s Education Director Maki Van Dyke adds, “There’s an incredible en-ergy that flows through a room when you watch a young artist take a personal risk on stage and succeed. More than that, seeing students working together and supporting each other makes one feel that it is possible to live freely and
creatively, whether in a formal theatre school or in our every day lives.”
In addition to highlighting the incred-ible talent at the Rosebud School of the Arts, the RSA Student Showcase Dance into Spring is also an annual fundraiser for student scholarships.
“Training and educating theatre art-ists is costly. At RSA, our intensive
study program is accomplished through small class sizes and one-to-one act-ing and voice lessons. Rose-bud School of the Arts receives no provincial or federal govern-ment support for its educational programs; yet, it
produces graduates that contribute in meaningful ways to the cultural fabric of Alberta and Canada.”
Van Dyke explained that while the RSA Student Showcase Dance into Spring is free to the public, the students will be requesting donations from the audience in support of the Rosebud School of the Arts Scholarship Fund.
The RSA Student Showcase Dance
into Spring takes place on April 25 at 7 p.m. at the Hope Covenant Church on 245 Brent Blvd, Strathmore.
Rosebud is an inspiring community dedicated to aesthetic integrity and environmental sustainability. Rosebud School of the Arts is a non-profit chari-table educational institution recognized by the Alberta Legislature through the passage of the Rosebud School of the Arts Act (RSA 1988) as an institution of
secondary and higher learning in both the theoretical and practical fields of the Fine Arts for the betterment of society as an expression of Christian values. It offers conservatory training in the-atre and music to students, many who advance to perform in productions by Rosebud Theatre. Kevin SorenSon, M.P., CrowfootParliamentary Report
I was very disappointed to be in the House of Commons last week watching the opposi-tion parties vote unanimously in support of Private Members Bill C-232 sponsored by NDP MP, Yvon Godin. His Bill asks Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, to ensure that no Supreme Court Judge may be appointed who cannot understand French and English without the assistance of an interpreter.
It was passed on March 27, 2010 by a vote of 140 Yeas and 137 Nays. The Conservative Cau-cus voted unanimously against the Bill.
Our Conservative government is guided by the principles of merit and legal excellence in the selection and appointment of
judges to Canada’s superior and federal courts. Bill C-232 would hinder regional representation by reducing the pool of highly qualified candidates from re-gions where fewer individuals are capable of hearing a case in both official languages - such as Alberta.
Currently, the Supreme Court provides all of its services and communications in English and French. In addition, every indi-vidual who appears before the Supreme Court is free to use ei-ther English or French, in writ-ten and oral pleadings. The goal of ensuring the rights of Canadi-ans to be heard and understood in the language of their choice is already being fully met by the Court.
Most people I represent would expect that the overrid-ing consideration in appointing a Supreme Court Judge is merit based on legal excellence includ-ing proficiency in the law, judg-
ment, honesty, integrity, fairness, work habits, social awareness and personal suitability.
The composition of the court already provides that at least three of the justices must come from Quebec and the remainder (4 of 7), reflect regional repre-sentation and be appointed from Ontario, Atlantic Canada, the Prairies and British Colombia. Linguistic considerations should not override the central consid-eration of merit by reducing the pool of otherwise highly quali-fied candidates in some regions of the country where there may be fewer lawyers and judges ca-pable of hearing a case in both official languages.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this or previ-ous columns you may write me at 4945-50th Street, Camrose, Alberta, T4V 1P9, call 780-608-4600, toll-free 1-800-665-4358, fax 780-608-4603 or e-mail [email protected].
Standing Up for Regional Representation Rights
Continued from page 1“We are doing everything
we can to make this happen by July 1st,” said Furzer.
Council members were pleased with the design and gave their blessing to the project.
The Association also asked that council even-tually consider building a side walk from the memo-rial to the children’s water park and Kinsmen Park so that all are easily accessible
to one another.Council said they would
consider this in the future.“On behalf of the fire
fighters association, we’d like to thank all the mem-bers of the community who helped us out,” said Furzer. “We’re definitely open to anyone else who would like to contribute through a small donation or what-ever to build the park and expand on it.”

Farmers are not the only folks hoping for some precipitation.
After a relatively dry winter, gravel roads in and around Wheatland County are in rough shape because of the dry conditions.
A snow/rain storm last Thursday helped alleviate some of the problems, but county officials warn residents to use caution on gravel roads as loose gravel can be very dan-gerous to drive on.
“When you’re grading the roads and you have a prolonged dry period, particularly when you come out of winter we’ve just had, where it’s so dry, you can grade those roads all you want … that loose dirt under that gravel will not lay there,” said Gerry Van Ooostwaard, Wheat-land County’s Superinten-dent of Public Works. “It is too dry and powdery, it won’t pack and it just rolls around. As soon as some traffic goes over it, it’s all washboard again.
“We’ve been getting a lot of complaints about washboard roads – I’ve checked with some other counties and I’ve found exactly the conditions this spring – extremely dry (and it’s) extremely loose and dry under-neath and the roads are
not packed down.“Everything is so dried
out and it is causing these really bad washboard conditions – people were saying ‘my road hasn’t been graded’ when in actual fact, they’ve been there recently, but you won’t know it (after a bit of traffic).”
According to Ooost-waard, if you cut the road even harder to get the washboard out, it brings up more of the loose dry material, and it com-pounds the problem and could make the situation even worse.
The county has even tried different methods, such as oil and calcium-based products, to han-dle the problem.
“Quite a number of dif-ferent things have been tried with soil stabiliza-tion, there are a lot of different products out there, some of which we tried” said Ooostwaard. “Actually, we’re look-ing at doing a test strip in the northwest portion of the county – a couple of kilometers of some calcium chloride for soil stabilization. We’ve done a little bit of that in the past with mixed results, but it certainly seems to help. (However) it is such a big county and so many roads, you just can’t be-gin to do them all.”
Despite last Thursday’s storm and the little bit
of precipitation expect-ed earlier this week, the best-case scenario for the problem is for some more of the wet stuff.
“The (recent precipita-tion helped), but whether it was enough remains to be seen,” said Ooost-waard. “Certainly, every bit helps.”
Even for the farmers.
sPeed liMit concern raisedA local resident raised
a concern to Wheatland County about the speed limit on East Boundary Road (on the east side of Strathmore).
County council decided to forward the letter of concern to the Town of Strathmore for their input before making a decision. The resident would like to lower the speed limit from the current 80 km/hr to 60 km/hr.
“Although it is a county road, anything we do to that road has a big impact on the town,” said Ooost-waard. “A lot of town residents use that road and it’s also used as an access route for the fire department and ambu-lance. The letter … was forwarded to the town for their comments and if they feel that there is a lot of merit to (the con-cern), then we’ll look at it real seriously and per-haps change the speed limit there.”
Wet weather makes for safer gravel roads
Spring weather?A heavy, wet snowfall hit southern Alberta last Thurs-day, making for treacher-ous driving conditions in and around Strathmore. Along with a flurry of the white stuff, the high winds made driving visibility very low. Wendy Tashlikowich Photo

The production group Strathmore The-atre Players has bounced around from facility to facility for years and made an appeal to Town council April 7 about the need for a permanent facility.
Currently, the group is looking for a fa-cility which they can be guaranteed the use of for a year, and a storage area for their props, costumes, etc.
“They don’t even have to be the same place,” said Angela Reeves, co-chair of the Strathmore Theatre Players. “We would be happy with anything. Right now, we would be happy to renovate any sort of building or a piece of land we could work of off. We are definitely not picky.”
The Strathmore Theatre Players strives to put on three productions each year and in the past has done Shakespeare in Park, musicals and family-friendly pro-ductions at Christmas time.
In the summer time, the group holds a one-week drama camp and has also done workshops with the Hope Bridges Society.
However, the non-profit group doesn’t have the funds to purchase a facility on their own and wanted council to know they are out there.
“We wanted to make sure that the town is aware of it and if there was anything they could do to help and so they know where we stand with things,” said Reeves.
The group rented spaces such as Crowther Memorial Jr. High, Strathmore High School, Holy Cross Collegiate and the Lammles Livestock Pavilion on the Strathmore Ag. Society grounds.
Reeve said many of the schools are just too busy with their own activities and other commitments to accommodate them.
She said the Ag. Society has been very accommodating with letting the group use the pavilion, but with no washrooms and a dirt floor, it is not an ideal situation for the group.
“I don’t think it always draws audienc-es because they just aren’t sure what they are going to get,” said Reeves. “The Ag. Society has been wonderful and welcom-ing to us, but its just not the optimum space.”
Town Council recognized the need for some sort of cultural facility in the Town of Strathmore and acknowledged that it was listed as a priority on the Quality of Life Master Plan that was recently com-pleted for the town.
However, they said that a cultural fa-cility is not a high enough priority and
there is just not the money to build one.The Strathmore Theatre Players would
also like to see an arts council step up for those in town in the arts area to gather and make strides together.
Council agreed that an arts council is a good idea, but stated that it should be done private, not through the town.
“There’s just so many groups in town that are in the same position that we’re in with not having a permanent venue, that we figure the strength of having an arts council would give us a little bit more power when dealing with things,” said Reeves.
Reeves said a permanent facility for a number of groups would allow it to be utilized to it’s maximum potential and make it easier for them to apply for grants.
Right now, the majority of grants can-not be applied for by the group, because they don’t have a permanent facility.
Even, if they had a temporary facility, Reeves said they would be in a better po-sition to apply for some of the grants.
The Strathmore Theatre Players will continue on with their current play, Ar-senic and Old Lace, which will be held at Holy Cross the last weekend of May and first weekend of June.

Tim Hildebrand is a profes-sional playwright and actor who is arguably best known for his memorable narrative roles as Matthew, the Tax Collector in The Canadian Badlands Pas-sion Play that runs annually for six days in July.
This spring, under the watch-ful eye of Director David Snid-er, Hildebrand brings his new comedic drama The Keeper to Rosebud’s Studio Stage.
“I’ve often thought that the tragedy of North American spirituality is not that we only believe in what we can see, but rather that we don’t be-lieve what we do see,” explains Hildebrand. “And so I thought what about a story where we hear a scene described from different perspectives ... but all from the same person?”
The changing peer contexts of his conversations, and his increasing willingness to allow himself to think about what he’s witnessed, leads the main character to understand and describe differently what he saw.
The Keeper is a comedic drama set in the first century. A successful innkeeper from
Jerusalem visits a neighbour-ing city and witnesses an ex-change that sets in motion a se-quence of events that changes the face of his business, his re-lationships and his life.
Adds Hildebrand, “I believe the play delivers a timeless sto-ry with humour, honesty and a surprise ending that is certain to engage our audiences’ hearts and minds and offer nourish-ment for their own personal spiritual journeys.”
Under the direction of Da-vid Snider, Rosebud School of
the Arts second-year students share the stage with profes-sional actors and take on all the elements of production includ-ing costuming, lighting and set construction.
“It’s a tremendous opportu-nity for RSA students to ‘taste’ the stage and experience a live audience with a story that will touch your heart,” says Snider. “We incorporate both historic and modern elements to allow the audience and the actors to enter and embrace a story that is heart warming, relevant and thought-provoking.”
The Keeper plays April 15-30 at the Rosebud Theatre Studio Stage. Shows run
Thursday, Friday and Satur-day at 4:30 p.m.
Tickets are $12 advance; $15 at the door. Group rate is $10 for 10+ people. Tickets call 1-800-267-7553 or visit www.rosebudtheatre.com.

The World Professional Chuckwagon Association held their annual canvas auction April 6 in Calgary and advertise-ments for canvas for the Strath-more Heritage Days were sold.
Strathmore had the third high-est total of bids out of the eight stops on the WPCA Dodge Pro Tour with a total of $194,500, up from $176,000 in 2009, an al-most 10 per cent increase.
“It was a rebound from last year, which was probably one of our lower years in the last few because of the economy,” said Pascal Del Guercio, chair of the rodeo and chuckwagon commit-tee.
“It was what we were hop-ing for and then some,” said Del Guercio.
The highest bid went for $9,500 from Kay Dee Ranching to Kelly Sutherland, and the av-
erage bid for a canvas came in at $5,145.83.
Del Guercio said Strathmore is usually in the top three for the WPCA Dodge Pro Tour because they are one of the top three shows on the circuit.
“That’s where sponsors want to participate because of the amount of people in the stands makes it that much more viable for them to advertise to those people,” said Del Guercio.
A number of local sponsors purchased a canvas to be seen at Heritage Days including the Strathmore Station, Sobey’s and Strathmore Motor Products, making this the highest num-ber of community sponsors ever ,said Del Guercio.
“When we first started this, we didn’t have any [local sponsors] and we had to go outside of our community,” said Del Guer-cio. “Now, they benefit off their sponsorship and their involve-ment.”
He said they also see the value of the sponsorship in the community.
Del Guercio added the atten-dance numbers have grown. Close to 50,000 people attended Heritage Days, and now local businesses are getting their mes-sage out to a lot more people.
On a similar note, Del Guer-cio said they are planning some-thing new with the WPCA.
“One of the things we are do-ing is looking to bring some-thing bigger and better in the way of chuckwagon racing to Strathmore,” said Del Guercio.
He wouldn’t expand on what they are planning, just that it wouldn’t be in place for this year, but he hoped to announce it this year.
“It will be a similar program, but we’re hoping to bring some-thing new and exciting for the fans to entice them to come and watch the show,” said Del Guer-cio.

Summer Hockey Schools begin
The Rocky Mountain Ice Hockey School players were out on the blue ice April 10 to practice skills and have some fun.

Even though one ice sheet at the Family Cen-tre has been removed, the blue ice is still being used for summer hockey schools.
Players involved with the Rocky Mountain Ice Hockey Program (RMI) were out practicing their skills April 10.
“The major part of our philosophy is to have a good time and make friends,” said Steve Deighton, coach. “If they get better at hockey then that’s just a bonus.”
Deighton said the non-profit program is fo-cused on development and practices rather than playing games.
Teams do participate in three-on-three tour-naments.
The teams will also have hockey players like Mark Astley, who played for the Buffalo Sabres, and Morris Luckowich, former Winnipeg Jets player, come out and mentor the kids.
“The kids are fantastic. A lot of these kids are farm kids and you can really tell with their work ethic and attitude,” said Deighton. “You mix them in with some city kids who are good to deal with and make new friends. You throw those combinations together and it’s been real positive for us.”
RMI has two programs operating this sum-mer, the Lethbridge RIM AAA Ice Selects and the Strathmore RIM AAA Ice Hawks.
They get kids interested from as far as Mon-tana, B.C. and Saskatchewan.
They practice every weekend, and only on the weekends so kids can still do their baseball, soccer, etc.
The team has an on-ice session in the morn-ing, then has a team lunch supplied by the par-ents. Afterwards players have an off-ice session and then head back to the ice.

It will be another exciting riding season for the Rocky-ford Horse Club as they pre-pare to start April 22.
The all-ages, all skill level club is about teaching skills and exposes riders to differ-ent aspects of riding.
“Horse club is about expos-ing people to different things you can do with your horse,” said Dani Gariety, club direc-tor. “Instead of teaching the same things year after year, we really want to try and open doors for people and provide opportunities for people to discover different things.”
The club meets Thursday nights throughout the sum-mer starting at the rodeo grounds in Rockyford.
The first two weeks are free nights, where anyone can come and ride to see what the club is all about.
“It’s just for people to come and see what it’s like and if the horse is going to be up for it and just to get a feel for what the club is like,” said Gariety.
After the two weeks are
finished, you are required to pay $50 for a single par-ticipant for the summer and $100 for a family.
During the sessions, dif-ferent pens will be set up for different levels of riders and there will also be games such as barrel racing or pole bending.
Every other week in the summer the club will also host clinics where different people will come in to teach techniques on things like reining, pole cross or barrel racing.
“It’s to get people inter-ested in different things they can do with the horses,” said Gariety.
The club will host a few different gymkhanas this year, which will be open to anyone, not just for mem-bers.
They also have some dates set for trail rides out in the mountain and an overnight trail ride is planned.
The club is also very in-volved with the Rockyford Rodeo and participates in the parade, a special horse club event at the rodeo and the rodeo queen competition.

The 2009-2010 hockey season is over, but the Fort McMurray Oil Barons Junior A hockey team is already scouting for next year.
The team was in Strath-more April 10 and 11 look-ing at talent from across Alberta, including a num-ber of local players.
“We haven’t been here since 2006,” said Doug Hergenhein, head scout and assistant general man-ager. “We really enjoy the Strathmore area. It’s been good to us.”
The Oil Barons have to scout outside of their area, said Hergenhein, because there aren’t enough kids locally to play, although they do have a number of locals on their team in-cluding captain Brad Steb-ner.
The team has had play-ers on their team from across Alberta and also from Toronto and Colo-
rado.For their camp, the Oil
Barons had approximately 60 kids come out from across Alberta, and Her-genhein said they invited players who they thought could be ready to play in the program in the up-coming two seasons.
Local players who were trying out included Justin Fraser, Kevan Mikkelsen, Brayden Zentner and Lu-cas Mertz, all who played on the Wheatland AA Chiefs this past year.
“Talent has been great. Justin Fraser has done very well. Kevan Mikkelsen has showed very well,” said Hergenhein. “Those two kids have really developed this year, so we feel there’s an opportunity for those kids.”
Hergenhein said it real-ly doesn’t matter to them what level a player plays the previous year, whether it’s in AA or AAA.
“Just because you didn’t play AAA midget, doesn’t mean you’re not good
hockey players,” said Hergenhein. “We have a couple kids in our line-up now, as do a lot of other junior teams, that played AA midgets and come right up into the program.”
Hergenhein said the Wheatland AA Chiefs did a really good job in de-veloping their team and it showed throughout the weekend.
Throughout the week-end, players participated in dry-land drills, on-ice drills and played in game type situations against each other, including three-on-three games.
“That gives them an op-portunity to showcase and see their skills,” said Her-genhein. “When it goes three-on-three you have a little more room out there.”
Hergenhein said the team will identify some-where between 20 to 25 kids from the Strathmore camp and invite them to Edmonton for another camp in July.

Riders at Riqueza Riding Academy got a treat April 10 and 11 with a show jump-ing clinic facilitated by Frank Selinger.
The two-day clinic featured one day of skills and tech-nique and then a second day of jumping.
“These clinics generate ex-citement and renewed inter-est and vigor,” said Selinger. “Most of the people when you see there will be a clinic start to bear down and work a little harder and apply themselves a little bit more.”
Selinger has been involved in show jumping his entire life. His father, Josef, owns and operates J.E.S. Breeding Farm in Calgary and is cred-ited with bringing the sport of show jumping to Alberta.
Selinger has also won nu-merous Grand Prix, including the Kubota Cup, and also a bronze medal at the Pan Am World Cup.
He and his wife Selena own and operate St. George’s Stable in Calgary.
The clinic was separated into small groups of begin-ner and intermediate levels of riders who each got individu-al attention from Selinger.
The first day was a session of round-schooling and flat work, in preparation to pre-pare for jumping the next day.
Selinger said the clinic on the first day is like a hockey practice without sticks.
“We are looking for preci-sion and harmony with the horses,” said Selinger. “It’s supposed to be you and the horse riding through a mine field rather than [what] most people do, which is ride with the mine field and the horse against you, which is not go-ing to fly.”
He said what the riders learned on the first day is a lead-in for the jumping por-tion the next day.
He said jumping for horses is against their nature, and that horses must be able to trust the rider, understand the command and take that leap of faith to complete the jump.
Selinger said that riders at the clinic can’t possibly re-
member everything that was said, but hopefully they can pick up some pointers visu-ally from what they’ve seen throughout the course of the weekend.
“There is going to be something for each of them, whether it’s to manage the horse better, steer better, get inside the horse’s brain, fig-ure the horse out, find the course of least resistance or be it’s friend,” said Slinger.
“[Being here] for a short time, you can’t lay down a long-term program, but you’re trying to tweak, make
little adjustments for every-one, identify some of the problems and give them things to work on.”
Dainelle Pennacchietti, who owns Riqueza Riding Academy, said it means a lot to her to have Selinger come to her farm.
“I’ve known Frank for a number of years and he is the reason I have a facility,” said Pennacchietti. “He’s been my mentor and my coach and supported me. To have him here again and to support me and help my clientele further themselves, is everything.”

Have you ever wondered why your tan fades? As your skin cells regenerate and shed, the tan disappears with the dead cells. While fading is inevitable unless you keep up tanning maintenance, there are things you can do to keep your brown around longer. Don’t use harsh soaps that dry the skin, as the skin cells will die away faster. Shower gels are more moisturizing and keep skin better hydrated. Keep your skin fresh by exfoliating before you tan and use a good quality lotion before and after tanning to keep your tanned cells from shedding away.

Strathmore CURLING
CLUBAnnual
General MeetingApril 237:00pm
Continued from page 15“Last year we had a guy participate
[in the rodeo queen competition] and it was really funny, but he was cool with it so anyone can participate,” Gariety said.
To be in the rodeo queen competi-tion, you must be a part of the Rocky-ford Horse Club and attend regularly.
“I really encourage people that are eligible, to participate in the rodeo queen competition because it’s really starting to get bigger and bigger,” said Gariety. “It really gives the participants a chance to become involved with the community and represent horse club and the community.”
Last year’s royalty was also invited to ride at the Strathmore Heritage Days.
Gariety said the club is starting to grow.
“There’s a lot of local people and we’re starting to get people from Stan-dard and Strathmore, but we want to spread the word and get more people out,” she said. “We’re always looking for donations of more equipment, but we have a good facility and anyone’s welcome.”
For more information contact Gariety at (403) 901-5938, Dixie at (403) 361-0149 or Karen at (403) 934-3169.
