Welcome everybody to 201 Welcome everybody to 2016. It is only three weeks We are only up to week th into the New Year and so much has already been much has already been ach achieved. Thank you to all the instruc Thanks to all the instructors and committee members that gave their time on the who gave their time on 31 January in setting up the club rooms and making sur club rooms and making sure we were ready for the 7 February start. February start to the club year. Week 1 saw us sign up over 50 new members. We thank the members for their patience and the committee members for their efforts as the first week back after the Christmas break has always been our peak period for signing up new members. We can expect that the new signups will result in large class numbers in Puppies & Class 1 in the coming weeks. As President it is comforting to know that we have such a supportive group of instructors and patient members to get us through this peak period. I thank you for your assistance so far and look forward to you continued support. The training subcommittee of Roger White, Frances Hammer and Peter Dapiran are piloting a new training program in an attempt to accelerate the advancement of members from class 1 to class 4 while the puppy training program has undergone a facelift focussed on handlers engaging with and enjoying time with their new puppies. It is all about making the addition of a new member of the family an enjoyable experience. Can I ask one favour and that is for members and instructors to bear with us while the Council works on the drainage of our regular training venue. The Council advised that the we will not have access to our regular venue for six weeks commencing 1 February. The plan is for us to be back on our regular ground by mid March. It is expected that the drainage work will be in progress until 29 April, however we should only be impacted for the first six weeks. Once again thank you to everyone for their assistance so far and we look forward to an enjoyable 2016.

Welcome to all new and returning

members. We hope you and your

dogs will have a very enjoyable year.

Please note that the club is closed for

the Labour Day weekend and for

Easter and that Training times revert

to the standard 10 to 12 on April 3.

The first community involvement

event for the club is on 28 February

where we have a stand at the Moonee

Valley Festival. All welcome!

Two for One

Over the Christmas break the subject of one dog verses

two cropped up; so I asked a few people who have

successfully integrated two dogs and why they took this

on. The answers were as varied as the situations.

“Dog one was coming to the end of its trialling days and I

wanted one ready to slot into this part of my life.”

“I take in rescue dogs and sometimes you just can't say

no.”

“If you have an older dog and get a pup when nature

takes its course, the loss somehow is eased by the

second dog.”

And of course the old chestnut was raised: “I wanted

them to have company when I'm out.”

With all these situations, it is imperative to be aware that

just because you think it's a good idea, your dog might

not. Not all dogs are happy when a complete stranger

shows up in their patch, playing with their toys and

owner and even sleeping in their bed.

Just because dogs are siblings, doesn't mean they will

get on either, after all in the litter, Dog A may have

bullied Dog B mercilessly and will continue to do so.

Think about family gatherings....... does everybody want

to curl up with everybody else? Before you include a

second dog in your household, talk to people who have

done it, do your research and bear in mind you might

create a problem which is difficult to solve.

Welcome back to all you old hands

and a Big Welcome to our new members!

I think I'll start this first 'Paws' with three stories, three

housekeeping thoughts, really.

Summer Days

It is Summer so be very mindful of just how quickly our

companions are affected by the heat and keep your

training times short with regular water stops. On our first

Sunday back - Sweltering Hot Day! - I was astonished

(and somewhat upset) to see a person on a bike riding round and round the oval with a dog running full pelt

behind the cyclist. Did you know that the dog will want to

please you and will continue to run until it drops from

exhaustion? It simply doesn't know how to refuse!!!!!!

If it was such a good idea to run, then why wasn't the

owner running? Let’s take this even further, why wasn’t

the owner running barefoot together with the dog? Of

course when we see humans behaving poorly, whether

out of ignorance or arrogance, it is very difficult to step

forward and say 'That's not a great idea'. If anyone has

found a way to do this with tact, please drop me a line or

put a message in the box on the front desk in the club

house.

Look at the nice puppy I was watching a dog program over the holidays...I

know, I know – “get a life, Glyn!”... which showed

how young children misconstrue the signals that dogs

give in close situations. Most children completely

misunderstood that a dog showing its teeth is in fact

saying, “Back off!” not, “Look, Daddy, the puppy dog

is smiling at me”. Interesting? What have you taught

your children about proper ways to approach a dog?

Even one that is wagging his tail…

Christmas party 2015! On the last Sunday of the club year the end of training was celebrated with a party with

fun competitions, a free barbeque and Santa!

A great time was had by all as you can see from this photo collection, all filmed by Lynn

Phillips. We would like to thank Prime Dog Foods for donating prizes.

I will stop trying to find the few remaining clean pieces of carpet in

the house when I am about to throw up.

I will not roll on dead seagulls, fish, crabs, etc.

I will not eat other animals' poop.

I will not lick my human's face after eating animal poop.

I will not eat my own vomit.

I will not eat any more socks and then re-deposit them in the

backyard after processing.

The garbage bin is not a cookie jar.

I will not chew my human's toothbrush and not tell them.

I will not chew crayons or pens, especially not the red ones.

When in the car, I will not insist on having the window rolled

down when it's raining outside.

I will not bark each time I hear a door bell on TV.

I will not walk under the big dog when he is peeing.

I will not steal Mom's underwear and dance all over the back yard

with it.

I will not play tug-o'-war with Dad's underwear when he's on the

toilet.

My head does not belong in the refrigerator.

I will not bite the officer's hand when he reaches in for Mom's

driver's license.

I do not need to suddenly stand straight up when I'm lying under

the coffee table.

I will not roll my toys behind the fridge.

The garbage collector is NOT stealing our stuff.

I must shake the rainwater out of my fur BEFORE entering the

house.
