Theory of change:The outcome of a global study of more than 3,000 experts, our new strategy looks to overcome the key challenges of applying science and technology to improve the wellbeing of people in the developing world.

Build relationships in key policy spheresChallenge: Policy-making is heavily influenced by economic stakeholders; evidence is not often systematically considered alongside other factors

Action:

n Increasing local coverage, networks and engagement of local knowledge through growth of regional offices

n Providing an online forum for policy and researchers

n Liaising with international advisory groups

n Advancing the number of experts and opinion leaders as contributors

Capacity building to support and sustain uptake of researchChallenge: There is overwhelming demand for the training of policy stakeholders and the academic research community on evidence for policy development and regional media on science reporting

Action:

n Increasing partnerships with regional and local training institutions

n Producing Practical Guides, our online resources for journalists and communication specialists

n Developing the SciDev.Net Learning Series, insights from our science communication research projects and analysis

Socio-economic analysis of research findingsChallenge: The lack of social and economic analysis of research results preventing the application of science and technology information in projects for development purposes

Action:

n Providing regular columns reviewing the latest science news from the perspective of various vulnerable groups and the private sector

n Ensuring gender equity and wellbeing apply across all our work

Provide access to understandable scientific informationChallenge: More than 70% of civil society organisations working on global development do not consume news and analysis on science for developing countries

Action:

n Illustrate clearly how science responds to the concerns of the mainstream development community

n Taking advantage of digital opportunities and mobile technology for providing information

n Increasing article syndication through mainstream as well as local media outlets
