ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Renee Lopez

Author of “Looking for a FULL RIDE?: An Insider’s Recruiting Guide”

As a seventeen-year coaching veteran, Renee Lopez is an expert in the college process, leadership training, and team culture development. As a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) — and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) — licensed coach, she has recruited and produced three All-Americans and has been honored as Coach of the Year by her peers. In addition, she has served as an NCAA Compliance Director. She has learned the recruiting process from being a college student-athlete herself and from having worked as a high school varsity head coach for three years and a college coach for fourteen, in NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA.

Her other accomplishments include:

• She was on staff at the University of Florida when the team went to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2003.

• From 2005-09, she led a NCAA Division II program to turn around from a 3-12-2 record to record-breaking, back-to-back, eleven-win seasons, earning Coach of the Year, team academic awards, multiple All-Conference players and an All-American.

• Those accomplishments catapulted her into an NCAA Division I head coaching position, where she spent two years turning around a team with a 0-19 record to a record-breaking season.

• God then called her to take a leap of faith into a coaching platform where she could share her faith at Christian universities for four years.

• In that time, producing two more All-Americans, numerous All-Conference players, and receiving Sports Ministry and Team Ethics Awards, and the NSCAA Team academic honors.

• She became involved in speaking with Fellowship of Christian Athletes, recruiting seminars, coaching education, and camps across eleven states.

• She has served in sports ministry in Costa Rica and has penned articles for the National Christian College Association of America.

Renee has learned what it takes to succeed in leadership, recruiting, and team development. Through RL Academy, she offers seminars and consults on “The College Recruiting Process and How to Become a College Student-Athlete.”

As a certified speaker, trainer, and coach for the John Maxwell Team, Jon Gordon Companies, Positive Coaching Alliance, and 3Dimensional Coaching, Renee Lopez offers workshops, seminars, and keynote speeches on personal and professional growth through the application of proven leadership methods. Recently, she has trained leaders with State Farm Insurance, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Florida Youth Soccer Association, Blackcard Books Publishing Company, Catapult Lakeland Entrepreneurs, Village of Hope Ministries, and a myriad of other church and community groups, and even served as a judge at a local rendition of Shark Tank.

In addition to helping others develop leadership skills, Renee uses her coaching experience to transform team cultures, build confidence, and unlock one’s potential. Renee played college soccer and graduated with her undergraduate degree in elementary education. Her graduate degree is from the University of Florida in Exercise Sport Science with a concentration in Sport Management/Pedagogy.

Macayla Bell & ParentsDebbie Bell (Mom) “The process of finding the right college is daunting on your own. All children are different- some want big, some want small, some want to be far away, and some close to home. Renee’s consulting work helped us to refine the process and deal with realistic expectations both athletically and academically. She was able to communicate with [my daughter] Macayla to help her find her “right fit”. She had meetings with her and asked important questions like: location, size of school, type of degree, etc. She got to know Macayla not only as a soccer player, but as an individual, her personality and character. She does a great job of filtering out those schools that didn’t fit with our daughter, based on academics, athletic abilities and personal preferences.

Her process also allowed us to monitor a coach’s level of interest and make quick contact. But most importantly, Renee’s

recruiting process made our daughter explore a number of coaches and amazing colleges that we may have never otherwise heard about. Two years ago, we had never heard of her [now] college, but we truly could not imagine a better fit or experience for our daughter!

We were very impressed with Renee’s professionalism, her attitude, her enthusiasm and her willingness to help our daughter achieve her dream. She is an honest Christian person, a former college coach, and a mentor. She can give you tools, information and insight from a college coach perspective and is extremely helpful in the recruiting process from the beginning to the end.

Renee gave our daughter 100% of her recruiting commitment. She is always just a phone call or text away from any questions you have regarding the recruiting process. We want to thank Renee, as Macayla was able to participate in National Signing Day at her high school, which is something that she was looking forward to her whole life.”

Macayla Bell (Student-Athlete) “If I were to meet a high-school athlete or parent who is starting the recruiting process, I would tell them to hire Coach Renee Lopez as a consultant or to have her come speak at their clubs, high school, organizations, etc. I wouldn’t have imagined any better experience or process. Renee helped not only in the recruiting process, but she helped me become a stronger person. She has a lot of experience with the whole process and coaching.

Renee makes sure she knows what you want and she is going to help you find it. She has

a very strong head on her shoulders and she will tell you the truth.

She will help you as the athlete, or your child succeed in finding the “perfect fit”, no doubt. I have been very fortunate to not only have parents and coaches that support me, but I’m extremely grateful to Coach Renee for her friendship, guidance and assistance with the recruiting process.”

Rick Bell (Dad)“We had absolutely no experience regarding the recruiting process, nor did we know where to start. Having Renee work with us during this very important time of our daughter’s athletic career was a blessing. She gave us so much helpful information and tools so that Macayla was able to select the perfect college, team. and coach for her.

If you want to experience a great recruiting process, this is the lady you need to consult with! She has many years of experience with recruiting and coaching. She is well known and knows a lot about the recruiting process and what it takes to land you at the college you wish to go to! There is no beating around the bush with her, she is straight forward with you on everything that you discuss with her. She works very hard at getting an athlete at the right program for them.”

• Make sure to use proper grammar (no texting abbreviations, etc)

• When addressing the coach, use their last name

• Do not mass email coaches

• College coaches want to receive emails from the student-athlete (not parents) to start to develop relationships with the prospect

• Often times coaches will delete initial emails that come from (even well-intentioned) parents

• Every coach knows every prospective student would likea college scholarship

• Do not ask for an athletic scholarship in the initial email as itsends the message that you are only interested in a scholarshipoffer and not the university itself, or the athletic team

• Wait for the college coach to show they are interestedin you and have seen you in competition before askingfor scholarship possibilities

• Research academic scholarships and the financial aidprocess on the admissions website so you know of otherscholarships available to you beyond athletics
