Guiding Principles of Rotary

Throughout Rotary’s history,

several basic principles have

been developed to guide

Rotarians in achieving the

ideal of service and high

ethical standards.

Object of Rotary

Four Way Test

Classification Principle

Avenues of Service

DTTS – North Coast – February 26-28, 2015

Object of RotaryFirst formulated in 1910 and adopted through the years as Rotary’s mission expanded, the Object of Rotary provides a succinct definition of the organization’s purpose as well as the club member’s responsibilities

It is to encourage and foster the ideal of service through:

1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity ofservice;

2. High ethical standards in business and professions;

3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’spersonal, business and community life;

4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwilland peace through a world of fellowship.

The Four Way Test

Herbert J. Taylor, 1932

President, R.I. 1954-55

Adopted by R.I. in 1943

Followed by Rotarians

worldwide in their business

and professional lives, The

Four-Way Test was created by

Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor in

1932. It has since been

translated into more than 100

languages and is used by

organizations and individuals

throughout the world.

DTTS – North Coast – February 26-28, 2015

Classification Principle

Virtually, all membership in Rotary is

based upon a “Classification”. Basically,

a classification describes the distinct

and recognized business or professional

service that the Rotarian renders to

society.

Classification Principle a wide

diversity of business and professional

composition representing the

community better service.

The number of members holding a

particular classification is limited

according to the size of the club.

DTTS – North Coast – February 26-28, 2015

Classification Principle

When professionals join a Rotary club, they do so as a representative of their classification – their particular business or profession.

Rotarians have the dual responsibility of representing their vocation within the club and exemplifying the ideals of Rotary within the workplace.
