Work Group Charge Determine how to implement the recent Academic

Program Review recommendations and ensure that the

process recurs on a regular basis in the future

Determine how the College can provide the appropriate

level of academic support services required to enable our

students to succeed in the classroom, in their careers,

and in graduate school

Identify alternative teaching delivery modalities that the

College should integrate into our academic programs

Ensure that strategic recommendations support

enhancing the use and teaching of technology at Vaughn

• Vaughn well positioned to offer several new programs

– Mechanical Engineering

• Faculty and staff have a base level of experience in delivering

education using alternative teaching modalities

• Academic Resource Center is well run with good communication

between staff and most faculty

• Small Class Sizes

• State of the Art Engineering Software

• Difficult to recruit new faculty

• Physics and Math courses do not meet the needs of management

• Curriculum in Math and Physics needs to be strengthened for

Engineering Students

Implement Recommendations of the Program Review

• Offer New Majors in:

– Electrical Engineering

– Mechanical Engineering

– Applied Mathematics

• Continue to Study the Possibility of Majors:

– Graphics Gaming

– MBA in Entrepreneurship

Form Committee to Continuously Review Vaughn Programs

• Committee works towards continuous improvement of all

aspects of our programs. Committee should consist of

representatives from different Vaughn departments:

– Faculty

– Admissions

– Academics Support Staff

– Students

Offer Separate Math/Science Courses to

Engineering and Management Majors

• Current Courses have a “One Size Fits All” approach leading to

inadequate preparation for higher level courses

Develop New Math/Science Courses for Management

Possible Changes:

• Pre-calculus --- Replace with Calculus for Business Majors 1

• Calculus – Replace with Calculus for Business Majors 2

• Physics 1 – Replace with Science for Management Majors

• Physics 2 – Replace with second semester of statistics

Develop Specialized Math Courses for Engineering Majors

• Utilize learning communities to

– Increase understanding of how courses are interrelated

• Examples – Differential Equations and Engineering Dynamics

– Increase teamwork among departments

• Include Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus

Strengthen Physics Courses for Engineering Majors

• Replace Algebra Based Physics with Calculus Based Physics

• Utilize learning communities to

– Increase understanding of how courses are interrelated

• For example Physics and Engineering Statics

– Increase teamwork among departments

Provide More Choices in General Education

Study ways that students could have more choices among

general education requirements. Benefits would include

– Allowing Vaughn to more successfully develop new courses ( Examples

include Graphic Novels, Modern Physics, Modern Rocketry)

– More attractive options to transfer students

Continue Development of Academic Support Services

• Continue developing staff, faculty and student skills in

supplemental instruction

• Establish a committee consisting of staff from the academic

resource center, students and faculty to work towards the

continuous process improvement of supplemental instruction

• Continue to offer academic workshops

• Increase advertising of academic services for students

Expand the Role of FYE Beyond Freshman Year

Help reduce the “sophomore slump”

• Promote the understanding that FYE is more than a course

– FYE office a place where students feel welcomed to Vaughn

– FYE office a source of help and support to all students

• Tailor FYE courses for specific majors

Increase Online/Distance/Hybrid Education

• Consider expanding staff in the area of online and distance education

to help with this growing market.

• Continue to explore international markets (for example New Zealand

and Singapore) for which to offer online vocational programs

• Move toward hybridizing all Vaughn courses in the next five years

• Form a committee to study online education elsewhere
