STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP “Numbers become Art” 2014-1-IT02-KA201-003537_1 Be. Art stands for Numbers become Art, the Erasmus+ KA2 project developed by a partnership of six countries including Estonia, France, Hungary, Lithuania, Spain and Italy which is the coordinator. The partners are represented by as many High Schools which want to develop a different, innovative approach to the learning of such school subjects as Maths, Physics, Biology and Natural Sciences joining creativity and scientific effectiveness. The project is based on the experimentation of a didactic practice aiming at building up and testing an innovative pedagogical methodology which considers the transformation of figures, data and scientific information into a visual product linked to the image or the work of art. It is specifically addressed to those students who meet difficulties or have an awkward relationship with the subjects of the scientific area and need to be reassured about the way numbers and data can be approached and managed. Through the peculiar view envisioned by the project they can see how the scientific strictness of numbers can be dealt with with intelligence and creativity to become a fascinating work of infographic art.

This allows also a closeness between two apparently distant areas of study as the method can help create confidence in the students by building new points of view. It can help study the scientific subjects looking at them with a different eye and render their learning easier, if not attractive, which can be appreciated by teachers and trainers, too, and facilitate their job.

The project development is structured on the:1. selection of charts, digital information, graphs, diagrams, algorithms, etc. referred to a common subject which is the territory or a cultural element that each partner wants to study. The selected 'numbers' are transformed into visual artworks such as paintings, posters, etc. conveying the meaning, sensations and feelings raised by the original tables2. creation of infographic art products (paintings, images, posters) as a result of the data processing.

Each partner has chosen their own area of study they want to develop with their students in their own way step by step to get to the same common final project results: the transformation of numbers in art and the pedagogical indication of a new learning approach and a methodology that teachers and students can adopt to overcome difficulties and prevent failures in these and other subject areas.

The topics considered by the partners as objects of their study and project development are:Estonia, 'Struve Geodetic Arc'France, 'The Golden Number and the Cathedral of Albi'Hungary, 'Toying with Light'Lithuania, 'The Sudova Manors'Spain, 'The Cordovan Proportion'Italy, 'The Botanic Garden of Padua'.

The study of the Italian partner on the Botanical Garden, for instance, briefly consists in the collection and selection of numbers and data concerning plants, flowers, etc., their classification according to origin, flowering or blossoming, colour, etc., and their transformation into tables, diagrams and graphs. Numbers are used as basis for graphical representations, across both time and space, of specific sections of the garden. The next and final step will be the infographic transformation to create images similar to paintings or other forms of visual art.

The four meetings foreseen by the projects in Hungary, France, Estonia and Italy are as many workshops for both students and teachers while two webinars, one on the Padua Botanic Garden and the other on Infographic applied to politics and economics, will be run by the Italian coordinator with the technical support and collaboration of Dr Ruth Schmelzer and Matthias Gessler from the Europäischen Fotoakademie ArtWebDesign of Rastatt – Germany.
